Ubuntu Multimedia :: Webcam / Headset Recommendations Using Maverick 64-bit?
Apr 9, 2011
I have a friend in another country I want to talk to using Skype. Can anyone recommend me a webcam and headset that will work for me (using Maverick 64-bit) out of the box? Preferably one I can buy quite cheaply, within the UK.

I have much given up on my VX 3000 because not only the microphone doesn't work but also Skype crashes when I actually want to use it. The video only works in the settings/test video view but not for a video call. So: can anybody recommend a webcam with a microphone that works reliably on Suse 11.X and with Skype? I'm currently using Suse 11.2 but might upgrade to Suse 11.3, so it would be nice if the webcam would still work in 11.3...

I have a problem making work a webcam. At the begining, after the instalation of 10.04 in a new laptop, the webcam did not work but with a lsusb I see that the webcam was Webcam 5986:0241 acer. I was not able to config neither use the webcam with any application. After lots of test and forums reading I could not do my webcam to work, and now when I do a lsusb my webcam does not appear.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good DJ program for OpenSuSE 11.2? A couple of friends have asked me to DJ their wedding receptions so it doesn't have to be a really huge professional program.

I gotta say that Ubuntu 9.10 is a fantastic OS. I've been dual booting for about 4 years with Ubuntu and I want to scream to the world that Linux is finally a better OS than Mac or Windows. Having said that, I have an issue that I can't get around...
For some reason my USB headset is not being detected. I'm using the 32 bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 on a run-of-the-mill Intel-based desktop rig that I built myself. One of the mass-market programs that I still use is Skype so I can voice chat with friends and family - however, since the upgrade to 9.10 I can't get the mic to work (Plantronics USB headset - headset speakers work fine). The reason I can't get it to work is because the headset is not detected. The audio setting is set to "Analog Stereo Output" by default which does work perfectly in every other way.

So I'm trying to get my usb headset to work. Right now I can adjust the volume and mute using the buttons on the headset, but I can't get sound toplay through it or the microphone to work. When I go to System --> Preferences --> Sound I can see that there is a driver "USB PnP Sound Device" under the "Hardware" tab. When I go to the output tab and click on the "USB PnP Sound Device" then I just can't hear anything at all. I can adjust the volume with my headset regardless of whether I have "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" or "USB PnP Sound Device

I just upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 and everything is ok except my USB Logitech Headset. The problem is that volume of the device is very low and I can't hear the music or any sound like I use to heard. Even if I increase the volume up to 100%, I still hearing the sound with a very low volume. But if I use the analog output of my sound card I can hear very well. I remember that i used to have this problem in ubuntu 9.10 but I fixed with a script that I found it in this forum, but I can't find it again.

Hi, I have a Creative HS-1200 headset. When I am listening to sound through it, and something makes a motion on screen(compiz, movie...really anything) then the sound is distorted. Like it takes a nanosecond pauses to redraw. This does not happen with my normal soundcard. Can anyone tell me how can I fix this?

I just bought a USB gigaware headset, and I have been trying to get them to work on my laptop, which has Ubuntu 9.10.
Unfortunately, they do not appear to be recognized almost anywhere, the only place where I have been able to find a reference to them was by using dmesg.

I have a Microsoft LX-3000 USB headset that has been working fine for me on all of my Ubuntu machines... until today. I accidentally clicked on "Hibernate" instead of "Shut Down" on my Lucid laptop this morning, and something seemed a little off about the hibernation process, although I don't remember exactly what happened. Anyway, since I woke this machine up, I can't get sound out of the headset. I've plugged it into multiple USB ports and can still use the microphone and the volume controls just fine, but there's no output. (Yes, I've made sure the device is enabled for output in my sound preferences).

I have a Sony Ericsson HBH-PV700 bluetooth headset that came packaged with a Sony Ericsson K510i phone.I was hoping to be able to use it under Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat as a headset and POSSIBLY as a microphone...I don't think it supports a2dp, so maybe this is a waste of effort. The Bluetooth adapter I'm using is Bluetooth 2.0 compilant, as far as I know. (It may be 1.2, but there's no way it's 1.1 compilant).
I have paired it with my PC and tried finding it as output and input in the Sound Preferences...no option. There's nothing in [System > Preferences > Multimedia Systems Selector] either! I have also tried the instructions at the Ubuntu Community Help Pages for Bluetooth Headset. However, my system fails to initialise the module-alsa-sink and module-alsa-source via the pactl command .I don't even know if it is possible with this device, but I'm willing to give anything a try! P.S. I'm not comfortable with installing a ton of packages just for one thing, but if there's no other option it's fine, I guess.

I can get my Plantronics USB headset to work with Skype. So far so good.
However if I plug the headset in to use with skype, I have to go to sound preferences to get the usb headset to be the selected audio device. It is automatically detected but is not selected.
Is there a way to have ubuntu netbook remix automatically select the usb headset as soon as it is detected after being plugged in?
Win7 behaves this way and my wife is used to it. Visiting the sound preferences every time the headset is plugged in won't do. Answering a call in Skype requires that the headset be selected straight away. Leaving it plugged in all the time isn't convenient either.
ASUS EeePC 900
Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, recently updated.
Don't want to have to resort to installing Win7 again.

Been using Windows 7 for a good while but would love to make a switch over to Ubuntu i installed via WUBI the 64bit of 10.4. The headset is detected and the mic is detected and both work fine but the Dolby 7.1 "effect" does not work at all. Now in Windows a app has to be running for the Dolby part to work. Any thought on how to get that to also work in Ubuntu?

I'm still on UBUNTUO 9.04 atm - I'm getting myself a Logitech USB headset. I plugged it in, and immediately I see this in dmesg
[ 7015.732141] input: Logitech Logitech USB Headset as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.1/usb4/4-2/4-2:1.3/input/input11[ 7015.732234] generic-usb 0003:046D:0A0B.0006: input,hidraw3: USB HID v1.00 Device [Logitech Logitech USB Headset] on usb-0000:00:1a.1-2/input3 [ 7280.088017] usb 1-3: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
Which is fantastic. Tested this on all kind of audio and I can hear them fine. So headset is working wonders. Except, everytime I want to switch the output from between the speaker and the headset, I have to go System > Preference > Sound > output tab > click on the switch. Which is fine, but the switching procedure via GUI is very arduous. Is there a way to to do this via the command line, if so I can bind it to a hotkey and therefore with one hotkey I will be able to switch between headset vs my speaker?

I've got a headset with a microphone plugged in, but not recognized by KDE's mixer.
Code:
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 046d:0a0c Logitech, Inc. Clear Chat Comfort USB Headset The device is visible in system settings: System Settings->Multimedia->Phonon->Audio Capture
but not in the mixer under Capture Devices. Is there an easy way to get either the notebook's built-in mic or the headset mic to start?

I have a Logitech clearchat pro usb headset and it works really well. However every time I plug it in I have to turn up its volume in alsa mixer. Also so that the right volume slider is controlled (by the volume keys) I have to change the output in pavucontrol. Does anyone know of a way that I can make this happen on its own? I guessed writing a udev rule might work (not that I have ever done one), but I don't know the commands that are equivalent to what I do.

There are 2 jacks at the front of the computer, one for mic, the other for headphones. I plug them in, and I can't hear any sound. Have checked all sorts of documents and settings for pulseaudio and ALSA. If I play a sound file, the Pulseaudio meters are showing that there is sound, but I cannot hear anything. Have checked the obvious, nothing is on mute. Here are the results of some commands ..
Code:

I have a new install of 10.10 on a Toshiba Satellite with a dual boot of win7. I installed 10.10 and on the first night I swore the headphone jack sent sound to my external speakers (may of been plugged in during install). Then the next day I couldn't get any sound out of the jack. Sound kept coming out of my internal speakers. In win7 the jack worked normally. In Ubuntu I have checked sound preferences and my alsa mixer. There is no listing for a headphone jack (so it is not muted).

I just purchased a Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB Headset. It works fine in Windows but unfortunately the same can't be said for Linux. It doesn't even seem to be detected as when I use the command cat /proc/bus/input/devices I get
I: Bus=0003 Vendor=0b38 Product=0003 Version=0110
N: Name="USB-compliant keyboard"
P: Phys=usb-0000:00:1d.2-1/input0

I checked Volume control and I have Headphone checked, and in switched Headphone is also checked. Actually... Maybe it is being detected... In the Device dropdown menu in Volume control I see "Logitech USB Headset". I checked that and the volume is turned up, speaker and microphone are selected in preferences... Sound is still coming out of my monitor's speakers though.
