General :: Apply Kernel Patch - Couldn't Find File To Patch

Apr 8, 2011

I just want to upgrade my Slackware 13.1 kernel (2.6.33.4) to the latest stable kernel from kernel.org (2.6.38.2). I have never done anything like this and I am a Linux newbie, so I would appreciate a "Kernel Patching for Dummies" version if possible. I did do a search on this forum and most of what I read was over my head. I found an FAQ on kernelnewbies.org on "How To Apply A Patch" but when I attempted what they suggested, it said it couldn't find the file to patch at line 5 and asked me which file to patch. So I CTRL-Z'd out of there and came here. Here's what I tried:

Ubuntu :: Apply A Patch For XServer?

Mar 11, 2010

I have compiz fusion and an ATI card (FGLRX driver) installed. This means that my windows are painfully slow to resize/min/max. This has bugged me for awhile, but apparently someone found a fix, as specified in: 107_fedora_dont_backfill_bg_none.patch

[Basically, they commented out most of a function].

how do I apply this patch? It causes problems for people using KDE on intel cards, but that won't bother me since I'm AMD on gnome.

General :: Apply Patch To Gnome On Ubuntu?

Jun 20, 2010

My system has been crashing, and I think it may have something to do with Gnome since the crashes only occur when I'm using it. I checked the log file after a crash and it reported...

Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_accel_map_unlock_path: assertion `entry != NULL && entry->lock_count > 0' failed

so I went to the Ubuntu launchpad and searched for it, and here it is. Someone has already submitted a patch and the bug status has been changed to "fix released."From reading the comments, I've learned the fix is only in Gnome 2.30, and Ubuntu 10.04 uses 2.28 (I think, maybe 2.26) (If it is possible to update to a new version of Gnome, please let me know). Luckily, someone also submitted a patch on the bug report as a temporary fix. Unfortunately, I don't know how to apply the patch. I couldn't find much information regarding it online, and the only stuff I did find applied to using Gnome's git hub.

Debian Multimedia :: I3 - Iceweasel Does Not Apply Gtk-theme On Login

May 1, 2015

Code: Select allexec --no-startup-id i3-msg 'workspace 2; exec /usr/bin/iceweasel

This instance of iceweasel only applies half of the gtk-theme, which i set via the mate-control-center.

The main problem is that the text in the right-click menu and on inactive tabs has the wrong colour (dark text on dark background)

When closing this instance of iceweasel and opening another one, the gtk-theme is correctly applied.

Installed gtk-theme-switch and set the theme there, now it works as expected

Debian Multimedia :: Inkscape Can't Apply Some Font Cuts

Jul 15, 2015

I use the default Inkscape 0.48.5 r10040 on the default 32 bit Debian Jessie with Gnome 3.14.1 and since I installed it I can't apply some font cuts which actually do work in other applications and did work on previous versions of Debian/Inkscape.

The cuts do show up as options in the "font/style" selection menu and i can use different versions from for example "Roboto" but if I - for example - select to use the "Semi-Light" variant of Roboto it just doesn't get applied after all. (I know that many fonts do not have any font variations and Inkscape confusingly just shows at least "italic" and "bold" as options in the style list anyway.) In this case the font variant is actually there, I can use the same font variants in Gimp and I was able to use it in previous versions of Debian/Inkscape, but not now.But I noticed instabilities in Gimp, Inkscape and Scribus lately. Gimp just consistatly vanishes when I try to scroll through the font selection menu and Scribus takes ages to load and does crush from time to time without any clear pattern to me. I don't think this is caused by Roboto itself since I used it in the past without such problems.

Should I remove all custom fonts and try if everything works ok again or does this approach sound rather foolish to you? Unfortunately I need most of the additional fonts I installed for different projects and I had them on my system in the past also without having such issues. I could however remove all custom fonts and include only those absolutely needed one by one ...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Mplay And Translogo Patch ?

Aug 10, 2010

This website [url] Is the home of the translogo patch.

Has anyone been able to use this patched mplayer in ubuntu and if so, how did you do it.

I assume you have to use synaptic to remove the default mplayer that's been installed from the repos, and use a source version of mplayer and add the diff.

I'm worried that doing this with an unsupported source could cause things to go wrong and bork my system.

The site also talks about a file called installscript.sh, I've never heard of this when building from source, so what does this file do?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Install A Kernel Patch To Support On-board NVidia Graphics?

Mar 22, 2011

I am impressed with 11.4 and am happy that for the first time ever I don't need to install a kernel patch to support my on-board nVidia graphics. However, the on-board sound no longer works now. I don't know how to set it up in phonon. My device number 0 in phonon is MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S high definition audio, and I assume this is my nVidia on-board sound card. The driver information states snd-hda-intel.

How can I check what is wrong with it? It did work fine on 11.2 right up to the 11.4 installation. I do get system sounds (like the start-up and shut-down sounds), but nothing from any application, e.g., firefox playing a video. Based on the advice from another thread I tried: speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav This does not produce any sound, but gives the following information: speaker-test 1.0.24.2

Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 96 to 1048576

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Won't Hold The Setting After Have Clicked "apply" And Left The Audio Setup?

Aug 16, 2011

Everything else seems to work, but there is a problem with sound. I have a Xonar DS card that is recognised by the system and which works when I test it under the sound section of Yast.I have the Packman repository and Libdvdcss repository listed in Yast. However, no sound from any application/cd/dvd/internet or on boot.I've noticed that, in KMix,f I go into the mixer there is settings option -> audio setup. Under this there is a speaker option which offers the choice of the source of sound to the speakers - from my sound card or from the internal Intel sound - which does not work, hence my sound card. WhenI choose my sound card the test L & R speaker sounds work fine - but it won't hold the setting after I have clicked "apply" and left the audio setup. It then reverts to the internal sound chip and, lo and behold, no sound is now produced
