Ubuntu Multimedia :: GUVC View - No Control Panel
Feb 12, 2011
Ubuntu 10.10, Acer Aspire One D255 I have been searching for a webcam program to work as Cheese did not (See: [URL]). I found GUVC (A review of it here: [URL]). So, I downloaded it from the Ubuntu Software Center and it runs GREAT! Here is the odd problem: It does not display the control panel to start recording. This would normally be at the bottom of each section from what I can tell.

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and my volume control disappeared from the panel. I have reinstalled pulseaudio but it had not re-appeared. I can't find it in the Add Panel list nor can I find it in the Pulseaudio volume control application as an option.

Since I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.31-18 I have been experiencing problems with my sound. 2.6.31-18 sound problems with nvidia MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78SThe laptop speakers no longer shut off when plugging in headphones. My sound control applet no longer appears in the panel. When launching a sound application sound starts off real loud for a second and then changes to much quieter. I have had this laptop since Hardy with never any sound issues. I do not know if it is the kernel upgrade or the accompanying backports modules. Could be neither for all I know and it just started around that time and is a coincidence.
Here is what was installed:
Installed the following packages:
linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-18-generic (2.6.31-18.20)
linux-headers-2.6.31-18 (2.6.31-18.55)
linux-headers-2.6.31-18-generic (2.6.31-18.55)
linux-image-2.6.31-18-generic (2.6.31-18.55)

After upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04, I realised, to my dismay, that the volume control had vanished from the panel. I can still control the volume via the buttons on my keyboard When I right-click on the panel and go to "and to panel" as other treads suggested, "Volume Control" is not on the list

I am using guayadeque and I need it to notify me about the title and the artist when a new song begins. Also it would be great if it could be controlled without restoring the window. I mean, every time I want to pause the song or skip to the next track, I should restore the minimized window and do whatever I want. Is there a way to control from the task bar or upper panel?

How do I restore the panel volume control? (the speaker icon on the panel, between the Network arrows and Chat/Mail setup icons).

Someone on the forums had me uninstall pulseaudio to get pSX working, and now I don't have a volume control icon on the panel and when choosing to add stuff to the panel it isn't available.I re-installed pulseaudio through the package manager, but I have a feeling it didn't install everything that uninstalled with it.

I accidentally removed the volume control from the panel (top right). I added it again (Indicator Applet), but now it's not on the far right with the time/date and wifi icons; it's in the middle part of the upper panel. How do I add applets to the far right of the upper panel?

I'd switched to OpenSuse around ubuntu 8.04, for a number of reasons. I thought I'd give (k)ubuntu another try, cos so much software gets released that's *ubuntu compatible these days, almost as much as is windows compatible. So far it's not bad, but I've got one gripe, that was one of the things that drove me away from kubuntu before. All the advanced user graphical admin stuff is essentially hidden! In OpenSuse, you've got Yast2, which gives you absolutely all your admin stuff in one "control panel". Kubuntu used to have this, in kcontrol, but that's long since gone.
Is there something like Yast2 for kubuntu? As an example of something I could easily do in Yast2 and can't find an easily graphical way to do in kubuntu 10.04-I swapped out one of the hard drives in my system. Now every time I boot, the bootloader is looking for the now missing hard drive, and I have to tell it to skip it. I know I could manually edit the file, but I'd rather have a nice graphical config tool that lets me configure things. I can't seem to find such a thing anywhere in my kubuntu install tho.
Another example-there doesn't seem to be a gui partitioner installed. I can just use parted from the command line, but like I said, I prefer a graphical interface. I installed partitonmanager, but still. A graphical partitioner seems like a pretty crucial thing to have in an OS. Maybe I just missed it someplace, but that comes back to my main point, which is that all the power user graphical stuff seems to be missing, or really well hidden; and it would be nice if all that stuff was in a single place. So, any control panel sort of app, that includes the sort of stuff Yast2 has on OpenSuse?

Yesterday my computer started acting up. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the update, but it happened shortly after, so i'm thinking that it's likely. My laptop has one of those touch-pads that controls the volume. Now it won't work. I tried going into preferences<sound to change the volume, but that doesn't even work. As much as I change the volume, it just stays where it's at.
Volume control on the panel won't work either. Also, another problem I'm experiencing is that when I go on ..... all of the videos play really fast. =/ not sure if it's ubuntu related, but this problem started at the same time as the other.

On accident I removed the volume control from the top panel, and when I go back to the panel and click add panel there is no volume control there. Also I use uTorrent in win and the utorrent logo use to go into the panel, but now it loads in a separate window label wine system tray. I have searched around and have not found a fix for this.

I want to set up a hosting control panel solution on my Ubuntu LAMP server to make it easier to administer virtual hosts, users, databases, and so on. I'm completely disgusted with how drastically the installation seems to alter your system (I highly doubt it even works at all with Debian/Ubuntu).
I'd actually prefer something that was more than JUST a web hosting manager, but that gave me options for managing my server in general. What control panel option would you recommend?
Most importantly, I want something that's going to work well with the Apache config standards that are unique to Debian/Ubuntu and won't require a PhD to setup. I really like the default Apache/PHP stack in Ubuntu. Of course I'm particularly interested in Open Source solutions. The new OpenPanel project sounds really exciting, and I've heard lots of people talking about Webmin. Others I've heard good things about include VHCS, ispCP, and ISPConfig.

The only volume control panel object I've been able to find in Ubuntu 10.04 is the Indicator Applet, and that has a bug that makes accessing the system through a remote VNC Viewer unusable. (Every time you hit the 'M' key, it activates the applet menu. You cannot type 'm' into a document or form without shutting off the applet.)
So, since I use VNC to remotely access the machine fairly regularly, it's either remove the applet every time I do, and add it back again when I'm running local, run without a volume control, or find another panel applet that provides for volume control. (At least until the bug-fixed version of the applet is available.)
The thing is I've not been able to find another volume control applet. Can anyone tell me where to find one?

I was having some problems with audio and java #post10609906), so I uninstalled pulseaudio, which removed the volume control icon from the notification area. However, even after reinstalling pulseaudio and ubuntu-desktop(which got removed), the sound control isn't there, although the internet connection icon in the notification area is still thereNote: Another thread said that adding notification area to the panel would restore it. I've tried that, but it only shows the internet icon and not the volume control.

File sync doesn't not appear to be working and my logs are filled with this error:
"Connection to the other side was lost in a non-clean fashion."
The sync daemon after awhile will take up 1.3gb of memory and will peg one of the processors.
I also get connection errors for the control panel app.
I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 64bit.
