After updating to 11.04, I have been experiencing several problems. One of the major ones is my USB mouse constantly freezes, usually shortly after boot. The computer itself is not frozen, so I can use the keyboard to close applications and restart. Restarting my computer will sometimes solve the problem, but not always. It is so frustrating.
I disabled ACPI, and although that stopped the mouse from freezing, I was uncomfortable with it being disabled, mainly because my computer never shut off properly, it would simply hang.
I have done some research and I am led to believe it has to do with "Bad Sectors" on my HDD. I have included a screenshot of the "Sectors that are failing" And the error messages I am recieving. If you believe it is anything else and there is a fix to it, feel free to inform me.
My mouse cursor will be fine, then it will skip a bit, then it freezes completely.I have to kill -9 the [kpsmoused] process to get make it restart -- then the mouse will work for random amounts of time. Sometimes 2 seconds, sometimes 10 minutes. Then I have to kill it again. And again. Etc.
I had a partition setup with Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04 dual booting. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 by installing fresh from CD but leaving the previous /home folder as is. Things seemed to be working fine, but started finding that my mouse and keyboard were freezing. After a quick search on the internet, I found the following suggestions as shown here:- Ubuntu Forums

This seemed to have resolved the issue but after a couple of days I again find my mouse and keyboard freezing. I also find that my parallel port printer had also stopped working. I have saved the output of dmesg and my syslog. The first can be viewed here but the syslog had too many characters,
I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04LTS. After completing the upgrade I lost use of the keyboard and mouse. I am able to type before the system loads but after loading- nothing.I tried connecting a USB mouse and that wouldn't work as well.
Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Random Freeze / Hang-up It's been a while since I last posted. Just to update, I originally ran Ubuntu 10.04 for a couple of days before giving up on it before switching to Xubuntu Lucid (10.04) - which, in 3 months of solid use never fell over once.
A week ago I did a fresh install of Xubuntu 10.10 on the exact same machine, and guess what?, not a single hiccup either in nearly a weeks' uptime. As explained before, I simply don't know why Gnome falls over on my machine and XFCE doesn't - I'm mystified. But at least my machine's stable enough to actually get some work done, and that's all that really matters to me.
PS: NO, I haven't tried Ubuntu 10.10 yet, who knows, maybe it would actually work on my rig???.. but honestly, I've fallen in love with XFCE - the simplicity & configurability is awesome, best DE out there by a country mile...
what is the difference between the various forms of ubuntu - Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu, and from people's experience, which is the most stable (well the one at least that won't keep freezing etc)? It's getting quite frustrating now with my mouse freezing continually and there just does not seem a simple solution to the problem! I use a Dell desktop C521, with AMD processor, and windows XP SP3 installed on it. So I got the ubuntu 10.10 CD, slotted it in and just followed the instructions to get ubuntu installed side-by-side with windows (ie. dual boot option).
since installing 11.04 on a computer that was running 10.04 perfectly, the system hangs for a split second every 10 seconds or so. If you make little circles with the mouse pointer you will see it jump position when the computer hangs briefly. If you are listening to audio or watching video then this also hangs for the same very short length of time.
I had the exact same problem when I tired going to 10.10 and so had to go back to 10.04. I was hoping it may just be an issue with that version but it seems not. The computer is: 1.6GHz Intel Core Solo, 1GB Memory, the motherboard is a Jetway Mini ITX board with integrated Intel graphics. It has no problem running the 3D stuff in Unity (or any of the old gnome desktops). Changing to 2D or turning off desktop effects in 10.10 does nothing to solve the problem. 10.04 seems to be the last time Ubuntu worked properly with the computer.
Recently with the release of Kali Linux on Aug 11th I have decided to do a clean reinstall and install Kali Linux 2.0 which runs on Jessie Debian using GNOME Shell 3.14.
When my system freezes I am still able to move the mouse and perhaps notably, the cursor still updates from an arrow to a hand icon in certain locations as though it is over a link - though this does not necessarily correspond to where links are actually displayed on the screen. I have seen no response to any keyboard interaction. For a while I have decided to ignore the freezes but they happen far too frequently to be ignored, within an hour my system would freeze up to 10 - 30 times for up to 15+ seconds at a time. The only application I am using when this seems to happen is iceweasel and I cant think of anything else that could be stressing the machine.

i'm using fedora 12 on my new EASYNOTE_TJ65-DM-139IT [URL]... from time to time (about one time a day) computer freeze, i cannot use my keyboard, mouse still work (that is: i can move the pointer on the screen) but click on opened windows, button, menu doesn't do nothing. I can't understand what's the problem and how to solve it, all i can do is hardware turn off the computer and reload fedora. This is quite disappointing, hw power off it every day can harm my notebook.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my HP Pavilion a320n computer with a ps2 mouse and the mouse pointer points with the bottom of the mouse and not the upper tip of the point. It does the same thing with Ubuntu 10.04.1. In Windows 7 and XP the mouse is normal. I don't know how I could adjust it or is this just a bug in the OS?
I have custom built Linux kernel (2.6.31) and also xorg. xorg is using xserver 1.7.3 . I have an application which simulates the mouse and sends mouse move events. When I switch the device on, the system boots and Xorg comes up, I can see X cursor on the system. When I start sending mouse move events from the application, the cursor do not move. If I attach mouse to the device and then move the mouse, from this point onwards the mouse events get detected from the simulation application. I have checked the dmesg log as follows

I have install fedora11 live and the mouse work well when installing.When you reboot the mouse works ok until the welcome screen apears then the mouse stops working and I cannot continue with the postinstall. I just upgraded to FC14 (64) from FC13 (32) and the mouse middle button (simultaneous left+right button) paste function has stopped working. I tested it with 3 makes/models of different mice and trackballs. For some reason (left+right) mouse returns the same code as the single right-button ('xev' value = 3). This worked in all previous FC and RH distros I've used in the past. Did a default setting get zonked somewhere? System: Toshiba laptop w/ USB mouse.
Biggest one that make game unplayable is mouse. Mouse isn't moving smooth it jumps around. I cannot shoot anything. So i asked for help, and everybody just say install windows. And where is fun in that. If people when ever run into problem with some software on linux just install windows. Linux would never go forward. I m not some great gamer, but i would like to be able to play this game. Probably somebody run into same problem. I'm running FC12 and GNOME.If I move the physical mouse about one inch, the mouse pointer moves across the entire screen.That's way too fast and way to sensitive.I prefer the mouse pointer to move far less distance on the screen when the physical mouse is moved.
From System->Preferences->Mouse, I set the various mouse Pointer Speed acceleration and Sensitivity to Slow, Fast, Low, High, and and I couldn't get it any better. At the least sensitive settings. if I move the physical mouse one inch, the mouse pointer moves across the entire screen.How can make the mouse pointer less sensitive to mouse movements?

Once or twice a day, the entire system just locks up, and the only way I know to undo it is with a hard reset. (The mouse cursor still moves around--but it can't click on anything.) It did this with a clean Lucid install, and still does it with Maverick. Often, it's when I'm in Firefox (and usually a site with Flash), but I'm not 100% sure of that.
Now, one issue is that I don't know how to diagnose this issue. With the system frozen, it's hard to probe anything to see what went wrong. Is there a particular log file somewhere that I should check out, that may say what happened?
Is there any USB mouse battery indicators for Ubuntu that can tell me the battery level of my Logitech USB mouse? (something like a laptop battery one) I want to add it the panel.
Ever since I reinstalled Karmic Koala on this PC I've had a problem with random freezing. Initially I believed it to be an issue with my xorg.conf file, however, I disabled it and the crashing still persists..
I just upgraded to 9.10 from 9.04, and whenever I try to do anything that requires admin privileges (like run software update), I can type in my password, but I hit enter, and my whole computer locks up hard, caps lock and mouse don't even respond.
I have also noticed this same freezing when I try to mount an internal hard drive, which also asks for a password. Sudo by commandline seems to work fine though. Plus occasionally there are weird graphical glitches, which may or may not be related, but only showed up after the upgrade. I also get freezing when running too many high resource apps, like firefox and openoffice at the same time.
since I installed Karmic 9.10 (fresh install, kernel 2.6.31-20-generic) my pc keeps freezing up... I think it must have something to do with my videocard because right before it freezes the screen goes blank and when it comes back (yes it does!) it is frozen... Sometimes it happens fast and sometimes after 30 mins or so...Still haven't figured out in which direction to search...Anybody know why or have tips? I am almost ready to re-install 8.10
I have a clean install of Kubuntu 9.10 running on ext4 partitions (root and home). Kernel: 2.6.31-20-generic-pae.Freezing is becoming a way of life! I first thought it was my main browser (Seamonkey) but freezes have occurred even when it's not open. It usually occurs when computer is left unattended for a while.I'm not sure if it's the desktop crashing, no ides how to check logs especially as I have to reboot to gain access.
Mouse and keyboard work fine, I can use ALT+F4 to close windows and ALT+F2 to restart. But programs freeze, KMenu won't open, Taskbar is frozen, no HD activity.Where do I go from here?9.10 seems OK on my laptop but that was a upgrade from 9.04 and I don't usually leave it open unattended for any periods of time. I've just upgraded to Kubuntu 10.04 and I've noticed that the new FireFox 3.6.3 keeps freezing up, using 100% CPU and lots of disk activity for seconds at a time for apparently no reason at all. The OS itself doesn't freeze up, it's Firefox only, but it's still annoying since I surf the web a lot. I see a lot of maxing out of my dual-core CPU's with System Monitor and I don't like it. Is anyone else having these problems?
I am getting frustrated and at my wits end. I went away from home for 3 days and came back to a frozen computer. To start, my linux computer was locked and wouldn't allow me to switch to my other computer using my KVM. All I saw was the default wallpaper with no icons, cursor or anything. Rebooting the computer allowed me to resume normal operation on the other but not on my linux comp.Now when I boot I can only get to a recovery console if luck is on my side and trying a normal boot freezes the computer with a blank screen and blinking cursor.
I tried editing the GRUB commands with "nomodeset", "i915.modeset=0" and "i915.modeset=1" with no luck. I also tried removing "quiet" and "splash" from the boot and it freezes at random parts of the boot. Sometimes with an error loading a device with IRQ 21 and sometimes on a memory address. I am running XP on the same computer, so I thought I would try to boot into that, even THAT freezes!I have even tried running my LiveCD and it tells me there is an error reading the boot CD...the same CD I installed with 3 weeks ago without any problem! I've been using mint 9 now for a few months and love it (yes i'm a noobie, lol). Every now and then, maybe twice a month, everything freezes and the only thing I can do is to reboot. The question is, is this a somewhat normal thing to happen using Linux? I have used other distros as well and it seems to happen with them too.

I just recently made a new user so that other people cane my computer when I'm not around, and I have noticed things aren't working right. For example,rted a few files downloading in Firefox and then clicked 'Switch from Fracta', expecting it to be like windows and the downloads would continue in the background while people log into the other account. But the screen just went black. Completely unresponsive.ouldn't let me ctrl-alt-f1 to the command line and alt-sysrq-R,S,E,I,U,B didn't shutdown and restart the pc. Also, It is not uncommon for the computer to freeze when my screensaver starts after however long of inactivity and the computer doesn't respond at all
