Ubuntu :: Maverick Netbook Without Unity?
Oct 26, 2010
I'd like to upgrade my netbook from Lucid Netbook Edition to Maverick. However, in trying the live USB, I found Unity to be unusable. Is it possible to use Maverick and keep the interface from the Lucid Netbook Edition?
<rant>Unity is painfully slow and missing several essential features. Also, who in their right mind would make a sidebar that's reminiscent of the MacOS dock? Mixing launchers with icons for currently-open programs is brain dead.

I currently have Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick netbook edition installed and I am using Unity. I understand there are updates to Unity since it was bundled with Ubuntu. When I do:
Code:
$ unity --version
I get:
Quote:
Unity 0.2.46
How do I update to a more recent version of Unity? Or do I have to wait until I upgrade to Natty?

Unity is too slow and buggy for me right now and I really really loved the old netbook remix interface (I wish they would make that one the default instead of Unity).Anyways, I read somewhere that I can still install it in maverick with a simple package install but I've looked everywhere for it and couldn't find the exact package.

I'm trying to install Go (programming language):
[URL]
The installation was OK, but I can't find where the PATH variable is set for 10.10 netbook remix.
Code:
~$ echo $PATH
gives:
Code:
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games

I've upgraded my netbook from Lucid to Maverick, and have a couple of questions:
1. My start-up apps don't appear to be running. In particular Tilda and Gnome-Do don't start up - and removal of the "Alt+F2" shortcut to run programs makes it hard to start them manually.
2. I'm still getting the old launcher as the desktop, with no search box in the top bar. (In many respects having the old launcher isn't so bad, as I'm Not Friends with the new Unity side-panel.

I installed ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386.iso hoping I would get the Unity User Interface, but to my dissapointment I got the regular one.
I checked the user settings and 'Netbook Edition' is selected as my default view.
What can I do to get the Unity Interface?

I remember I tried to boot Ubuntu Netbook Edition LiveCD once, but I had a problem with 3D graphics, and a result I couldn't see the menu panels, etc. So, I was wondering, will the same thing happen with Natty, since they are both Unity? Or will they improve support for graphics in 11.04?

A week or so ago I upgraded from UNE 10.04 to 10.10 and I can't stand the Unity interface, mostly because the full color icons on the left are really distracting.
How do I either
a) switch back to the old UNE interface (preferred)
or
b) change to the standard desktop?

Having just upgraded to 10.10, I've discovered Unity, and I'm afraid its not for me. I absolutely loved the previous interface, and was quite shocked and saddened to see it disappear. But I'd like to keep all the other new software that comes with 10.10. So my question is, can I install the old 10.04 beautiful interface to run on the 10.10 edition? Re-installation is a MS solution, that turned me on to linux in the first place!

I have been running the 10.10 Netbook version for about 3 weeks, as as a dual boot with Windows XP on an MSI Wind netbook primarily with an external monitor (and the netbook monitor off). Because I am using an external monitor, I'd like to get more of a full desktop experience. However, when I read on the forum how to get Gnome desktop workin, or even the desktop-switcher utility, I think there is something wrong with my installation.
I have the unity launcher on the left, which does not appear to have any easy way to add items. I have the bar across the top, which has the logout/logoff/shutdown button, clock and a few icons (bluetooth, network, etc.) on the right. On the far left, I have an icon that brings up the "Microsoft Bob"-like menu (Web, Music, Photos, Games, etc.). I don't have any menu (System, Applications, etc.). When I logout, I have no option to log in using gnome desktop.
Why don't I have many of these options, that other users describe? What is the best way for me to get the full gnome desktop? When I go into synaptic and search for gnome desktop, dozens of items come up, including many that are marked as installed.

Since next launch will have Unity desktop, I decided to install the netbook and available unity edition for 10.10, but my experience has been less than pleasant. :-/ I'll post a few comments about my worries, perhaps you know how to solve them already. The left bar is nice: but so far I've been unable to customize it! Not intelhidding, nor control over the size. The pick into the dock problem has already solve for unity but not for Netbook. Personally, I rather prefer a docky panel instead of an un-customizable bar.
Mension by a lot of people, the <Alt>-F1 and <Alt>-F2 binding are not working. I've never used <Alt>-F1 but <Alt>-F2 is quite useful for the intermediate or advance user. The Super-key: In netbook desktop somehow I loved that the super-key allows us to select a launcher from the bar. However this functionality is not in Unity. Worse, each time I press super-key, it sends me to the menu... How could I use the compiz functions so? like Super-a My compiz-configuration from Gnome is used by Unity... so when I press the show desktops I can see only one. How do I get 4 of them? I really, really love the fact that in the upper bar are shown the menu of the current selected window, specially because one can un-maximize the window and the menu remains in the panel. Perhaps the upper border of the graphical windows could be made thiner.. since there is no menu there any more!
I think this is mostly it! Anyway... I'll keep in touch Although all my possible negative comment, I think you have done a remarkable work with this environment... but we all know that mind breaking changes should support crisis! Don't they?!

X is working, I get a desktop, all updates are current, just no Unity menus/window/widgets/whatever, blank desktop with single mapped network folder and no working keyboard shortcuts after initial login. I upgraded on Alpha 2 and it ate my desktop, never has given it back for 3 months. I assumed eventually the upgrades would fix it. Looked into ditching Unity and doing GDM, but thought I'd wait it out, ran dpkg-reconfigure unity and it did nothing, can't find any relevant errors in the logs, where should I be looking and/or what should I be doing? Running lots of servers on this box and have dual-boot, otherwise I'd probably torch it and start over.

I was running Ubuntu 10.4 netbook version (with Gnome) on my Dell Inspiron 910 and yesterday it told me there was an upgrade available, to Natty. I followed the links, did the download, and left it to install overnight. When I got up today, it said it had a problem, because an application was using a file it needed. I thought I had closed everything before I started the process. I acknowledged the message, and proceeded to restart.
I ended up with the standard 10.4 Ubuntu screen, but with no tool bars, status bars, or anything. Just the wallpaper. Keyring login came up and I signed in, wireless said it was connected. So it looks like things are working, just no UI as such. Poked all the screen edges with the mouse, but nothing popped out.
Ctrl><Alt><Del> brought up the logout screen, and if I clicked on Help, I could ultimately get Firefox to run. (Note: the Help screen talks about Gnome, but it had the new popout scroll bars).
If I hold down <Shift> on startup, I get the GRUB menu. I am running linux generic 2.6.38-8 , but I am not sure where to go from there. Running dpkg didn't help.

I upgraded to 11.04 about 10 days ago. I have this intermittently weird problem where some of the applications, some of the time, are oversized for the 1024 x 600 display. I can't get to the buttons on the bottom end of the screen, and the window refuses to decrease in size enough so that it all fits on. So far, I've had this problem with Evolution, Pytrainer, Gimp, and another one that escapes my memory.
Has anyone else had this issue? (Except for the Evolution bug, which has been around since 2005 or thereabouts. How on earth is that thing still the default when nobody bothers to fix it up?) how to a workaround? Heck, I don't even know where to go to report this kind of bug.

This weekend, I'll rebuild a broken Windows Vista laptop installation for a friend. I would like to use Ubuntu. My friend only needs web and email, but everything must be easy: user-friendly, not "technical". The full Ubuntu desktop is not workable for her. She finds it too geeky, too complicated. She is not technical, and she only uses her computer for a few minutes each week.
10.10 Netbook sounds perfect (based on good experiences of 10.04). But when installing 10.10 Netbook, the system reports "No Required Driver For Unity", and starts with the full Desktop GUI, not the Netbook GUI. This happens on machines that worked perfectly with 10.04 Netbook.
OK, you can't have a 3D GUI without 3D hardware acceleration. But is there a way to enable the Netbook menus in a 2D style? Similar to 10.04, but with the updated look, and the updated applications?
The Netbook Edition looks like a great way for mainstream Windows users to upgrade to Ubuntu. But this experience must not be limited to rich people with new hardware. Surely, Ubuntu's hardware requirements don't exceed those of Windows?

how to add launchers on the "dock". Anyone knows how to do it? Drag and drop does not work yet. I hope they'll make an auto-hide feature for the "dock" to save space on the screen

1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO
The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...
Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?
Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...

For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?

Im a new linux user and so far im loving it, problem is i just tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix onto my Compaq mini 311 (via usb) and at first i couldnt even install from the flash stick...finally managed to by formatting the flash with an HP tool and then creating the bootable Live OS with "Linux Live USB creator 2.6."
I selected to use the whole Hard disk to install (the hard disk was empty anyway as i recently formated the drive which had windows 7 on it)
The the installation completed successfully but the problem is that after rebooting the OS wouldnt boot, leaving me with a flashing cursor or _ on the top left of the screen...
I have tried everything i could think of, using different Usb creators, formatting the hard drive before re-installing but for some reason im still left with the same blinking cursor after every install.
I have just installed the regular version of ubuntu 9.04 which works perfectly after installing but id much rather use the netbook version of 10.04
(I assume the issue has something to do with the bootloader but im completely new to the topic so cant really troubleshoot)

I was running Ubuntu 10.04 and yesterday I decided to test drive the 10.10 beta. After updating to 10.10 and rebooting, all I now get is the login screen with all the icons displaying as an 'X' and more importantly, no actual login prompt. I know just enough about Ubuntu to properly break it, but I am at a loss as to how to fix this, since it doesn't give me the option of opening a terminal.

Today I upgraded my Lucid to Maverick. After upgrading, from "update-manager -d", I tried a couple of new programs (games, actually) and re-enabled the third party repositories. I don't have exotic things, just google chrome, transmission beta, and some more of this sort. After rebooting, the system enters in terminal instead of the regular gui. I tried to search online for possible solutions, but none worked. I tried
(1) startx
output: fatal server error, no screen found.
(2) sudo service gdm stop; sudo service gdm start
Output: gdm start/running process 1265
(3) removing the option nomodeset from the boot. To do this I edited /etc/default/grub, the line with the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX and ran grub-mkconfig. After a reboot, the computer returned to the terminal.
(4) some even suggested removing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but I don't have that file...
I have an acer timeline with initial hardware. I don't know which graphics card it has, if any... I really need to get my computer running, and I was looking for suggestions before reinstalling 10.04.
