I an setting up a kubuntu system for my parents and I downloaded and I went to the site and downloaded and burnt the ISO to a DVD and booted the computer from it. I chose to look at the distro first but every time I tried to boot it up the live CD hangs.
I tried to install via text mode and this went through okay and then I tried to boot up and the computer hung. I tried this several times and the same thing happened. Is it a dodgy ISO or is there something else I should be concerned about?

I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu Linux (11.04) into latest VMware workstation (7.1.4 build-385536). I have tried to install the VMware tools ISO that came with VMware workstation but It didn't work and the installation seemed real sloppy anyways.
I installed the open VMware tools from synaptic within the guest linux and restarted, everything seemed to have been installed just fine but VMware Workstation doesn't detect it. I'm not sure if the tools are outdated, silent errors happened, or if any manual post installation steps need to be taken.
getting any form of VMware tools to run in Linux and detected by VMware Workstation.

XP Pro SP3
Ubuntu 9.10
Kubuntu 9.10
Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?

I completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.
I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task?

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.

I would like to apply KDE on my Kubuntu because the current one blew up. But each time I to sudo get-apt it seems to be fetching from the cloud. Is there a way I can make it to read from my local Kubuntu CD? I have both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Kubuntu Live CDs.
I believe the local disk read should be faster to translate than to bite the bytes across thousands of miles over the wire right?

I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed
The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".
Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".
I tried this command and find the this message
[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes
Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]
Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"

Okay, so I found a couple articles about the new BTRFS for Ubuntu that became available on 10.10, and I was wondering if some people could clear some stuff up for me. I am going to be upgrading my desktop box from 8.04 soon (I know, long time coming, but I had some hardware compatibility issues with recent releases that have been addressed on my end) I'm pretty new to a lot of these terms, so a detailed explanation would be awesome if you don't mind.
1 - Is this file system ready for the home user?
2 - Are there significant performance gains over ext4 and is it stable? If not now, will it be in the future?
3 - When a new subvolume is created, does that act like a partition? For instance, would a home folder in it's own subvolume act like home on a separate partition in the event of a reinstall or upgrade to the root filesystem? If not, what would be the specific advantages to using a subvolume?
4 - When creating a snapshot, is it bit for bit or a compressed image?
5 - Does compressing the root filesystem save a significant amount of disc space?
6 - Is there anything else that would be important to know about this filesystem?
If I have some things confused or misunderstood, it is because I am just starting to understand how some of the foundational stuff in my OS works

I've been trying to resurrect an old laptop (think Pentium 800 old ) by installing Ubuntu on it. I thought I was in the clear after downloading and booting, but then I get stuck at the 'Ready When You Are' screen. This is Ubuntu 10.10I have seen previous such issues caused by caps in the username, but I've not been prompted to even enter a username yet so I really don't know what could be causing this, and I don't know where to begin searching.

I'm trying to start a service that depends on networking being started, whenever the computer is rebooted. Is this easily possible from an /etc/init.d script? I have tried creating a script here (conforming to the standards), but I'm really doubtful that it's even running on boot, let alone working. When I test it manually, it works. How can I make a script that runs on boot which runs after networking has been started?

I tried to upgrade to the newest ubuntu version (10.04 I think). Now I can't even boot my computer. After the initial "boot" stuff, the ubuntu screen comes on and then locks up in the process. I get the message "The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or press s to skip mounting or M for manual recovery."I've tried "waiting" overnight to no avail. I tried the "S" command to skip and got the message "[141.233783] Adding 1502036k Swap on /dev/sdb5. Priority-1 extents:1 across:1502036k"
I think the manual recovery is what I need to do. When I type the "M" for manual recovery I get a maintenance shell with the last line being. Can anyone please give me some commands to fix this problem? I have an OLD ubuntu boot disk. How can I get my computer to boot from it? I tried hitting "esc" while booting up to no avail. I also tried hitting F1 while booting up. I think that used to allow me to boot from the CD drive...but doesn't work now.

I have an annoying issue when loading Ubuntu it gives a message sdc1 and sdb1 being not ready. I have to press S to skip the two messages and continue loading.
The problem is that sdc1 is my DVD drive and sdb1 is my USB drive, so naturally they are not always present.. Its really annoying, is there anyway I fix this so it stops doing this every time I reboot.
Also I think its connected but if I do boot without these present, when i do plug for instance my usb drive in once loaded, it will not mount, I have to reboot with it plugged in.
