Ubuntu :: Keyboard Configuration Resets After Restart?

Jan 15, 2011

I am having an issue with ubuntu that is driving me slowly mad. When I start the machine there are two keyboard configurations, USA and USA with dead keys, with the latter selected by default. When using punctuation marks I have to hit them twice otherwise they modify the letter I press next. To fix this I simply have to delete the USA with dead keys configuration. However, every time I restart the machine it is back.

Does anyone know why this might be happening? What is the configuration file that ubuntu loads for the keyboard? I am thinking maybe my user doesn't have permission to edit the config file and that is why the changes don't persist past restart. There were some other threads on here with a similar issue however in all of those cases I saw the fix was to make changes to some offending lines in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf. My xorg.conf however does not have a section for the keyboard.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10

Ubuntu :: No Keyboard At Grub First Boot - Keyboard After Restart?

Jun 27, 2011

Computer: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 laptop, 10.10.This has always happened but I have gotten around it by time-out and putting my menu.list in order. When I first boot the machine (switch on for the day from computer being off) I get to the grub options to select a kernel and I have no keyboard. No up/down arrows so have to go with the kernel on top of the list (not always desirable).

When I get to the log-in screen if I hit restart and go back to the grub screen I have a keyboard and can select any kernel. If I login to the kernel I have full keyboard, no problem. If I then restart, I have keyboard at the grub list.

Nutshell: It is only when starting the computer fresh that the keyboard is dead at grub menu (and then only). Any time after that, once the computer has been switched on, if I restart I have keyboard at grub menu and can select different kernels. (Of course, if I switch the computer off and back on again, no keyboard ...)

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Screen Resolution Configuration Resets After Reboot?

Dec 15, 2010

I've read some people having the same problem, but I can't manage to fix it. I got a 1440x900 screen. Every time I reboot my system starts up with 1400x1050 , I have to go to System settings to fix it, options don't get saved as one would expect.

Well, I think my problem is cause of nvidia drivers, so I go to nvidia settings to get this fixed. But, these settings are all fine, it says 1440x900. When I try pressing Save to X (to make sure it gets saved), i get a failed to parse message (Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'!). I've got driver version 256.53

Oh well, screw this, I'll do it manually, so I go to the xorg.conf file. But over here everything says 1440x900. How come my resolution keeps changing each time I reboot?

OpenSUSE Install :: Keyboard Layout Constantly Resets To Another Layout In OSUSE 11.3?

Aug 9, 2010

I have installed opensuse 11.3 a couple of weeks ago in 2 computers and both suffer of the same problem. In my asus laptop, i have a german keyboard. It is correctly recogniced as german keyboard by ev-dev, i guess. (ev-dev managed). But i need to write some spanisch symbols too, like accents (ᠩ ? 񬠷hich in a normal linux, they do work. For some reason, after rebooting, or after some time of having it running, the keyboard layout resets to an invalid setup, here accents get not over the letter (?a ?e ?i ?o ?u), so i have to select my layout again in the gnome control center.

With my other computermore or less the same. Its a desktop PC with an spanisch keyboard. But i thinck i picked German keyboard during installation and now it starts always with german with some sort of 5 secs delay when setting it. I have to pick spanisch and i always delete the german layout, but after some time having it running, it resets to the previusly deleted german layout.

Debian Configuration :: Bad Superblock On Ext4 Filesystem - Everytime - Computer Powered Off - Clock Resets To 1999

Jan 15, 2010

I added an ext4dev filesystem to my hard drive as /dev/sda3 and mounted at /share with the goal of putting all of my multimedia files on it and sharing it through NFS. I followed this guide: [url]

Of course, this was from lenny (hence the -dev). The partition was fine, and I mounted it numerous times. I also performed a dist-upgrade to squeeze. I shutdown that computer with the usual 'shutdown -h now' and disconnected the AC power cord from it, because I wasn't planning on using that machine for awhile. As far as I could determine, everything was fine before I unplugged it.

Every time that computer is powered off, the clock resets to 1999 because the battery is bad. So I am used to getting the "last mount time is in the future" error.

Three weeks after halting, I powered the computer back on. It was unplugged until this point. I got an error message when it attempted to mount /dev/sda3

I then removed its line from /etc/fstab, rebooted. and tried to check it, but I just keep getting the same error-- even with the '-b 8193' option.

The machine is still using the 2.6.26 kernel from lenny. I am building a new one right now (2.6.30), hoping that the problem is caused by the ext4dev/ext4 module. Otherwise I don't know what to do.

Slackware :: "random" Xorg Resets - Quickly Typing In The GUI A "2" Resets X?

Apr 5, 2010

when I was entering a sed command, with a back-reference to the scnd set of parenthesis. 2 reset X, or so I though ... I did some experimenting, and lo and behold, I could reproduce the behaviour even on the xdm login screen, when I typed in my sed expression as the name. Not every time, not accurately, but maybe 3 out of 10 times I can reset X by pressing 2 on the numeric row in a quick succession with other keys, and the I at first thought was required to trigger the behavior is not necessary at all. Nothing in the X-log, nothing in ~/.xsession-errors.

I'm annoyed, and as X is quite sizable and spawns a truckload of processes I'm highly reluctant to try and reproduce the behaviour under the control of strace (mind you, since it seems to be "speed" related it maybe wouldn't even occur under strace ;}). I'm running Slack64 13.0 on a Thinkpad R500 with an Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics chipset, can't think of anything else that might be special with this hardware in regards to X.

Debian Configuration :: Booting Often Only After Third Restart?

Aug 17, 2011

My system is a three days old Linux version 2.6.32-5-amd64 (Debian 2.6.32-35) with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 60 @ 2.80GHz. It does start, goes through the grub and then spits out strange messages and just freezes before the KDE can be started. I have to restart again, until it really boots everything. This is happening in a random pattern.

I activated bootlog, but as far as I can see, the log only tracks, if the system is really booting. So I also have the dmesg copied into pastebin. These are the only two logs I know, now.

The code of the boot log goes here-
Wed Aug 17 10:24:19 2011: Setting parameters of disc: (none).
Wed Aug 17 10:24:19 2011: Setting preliminary keymap...done.
Wed Aug 17 10:24:19 2011: Activating swap...done.

Debian Configuration :: Openssh-server Fails To Restart During Update?

Restarting OpenBSD Secure Shell Server: sshd: failed!
/dev/null is not a character device!

The error is within the /etc/init.d/ssh script. ("error")

This is in squeeze so I can only blame my self, but.. This is one of the packages that fair and square should not fail to install/update/start/restart no mather what!

libXNVCtrl 256.35-0.pm.2.1

Now my problem is everytime I save the configuration for
- the open GL settings
- the anti aliasing settings
- the powermizing settings
with the GUI-programm NVIDIA X Server Settings under GNOME

Every setting is lost completely after a restart of my system and the defaults are reset even if i save the configuration in the menu nvidia-settings configuration of the GUI-programm NVIDIA X Server Settings. Is there a possibility to SAVE the settings? They should stay after a reboot.
I think this is a issue very spread under several Linux distributions. I can't understand the source of the mistake or bug.

Debian Configuration :: File Share Unavailable From A Reboot Until Restart Samba

Jul 3, 2011

I am having slight issue with setting up file sharing. I have a windows 7 pc and hp proliant microserver running. I have a raid array which I am using as a share for storing music, pictures etc. When I reboot the debian server I can't connect to the server from the windows 7 PC (I have mapped a network drive) until I go on to the server and restart samba with /etc/init.d/samba restart - then everything works fine. I can ping the server with both ip and hostname but the network drive does not connect - this is straight after a reboot. Is the /etc/init.d/samba restart doing something differently to when the server boots? I have read several posts relating to printer sharing issues which point to samba not starting before cups so I am wondering if samba is starting before some of the relevant networking services.
