Ubuntu :: Karmic Keyboard/mouse Lag On Disk Activity

Mar 6, 2010

I recently switched to 64-bit Karmic after installing extra memory. I have everything working fine, but I am experiencing an annoying lag in keyboard and mouse response whenever any of the CPU cores briefly jumps to 100% usage, which tends to happen every 10 to 15 seconds, usually caused by firefox.

I'll be typing or scrolling, and there is fairly regularly a hesitation of a second or two in which nothing happens on-screen, and then everything catches up again, ie the keyboard buffer empties to screen or the page scrolls a lot.

I've tried changing the Nvidia driver and the disk iosched elevator, which were the only ideas I could find when searching on this issue.

It seems to me that (a) the CPU usage shouldn't be jumping up like that, and (b) even if it does, it shouldn't affect keyboard an mouse activity to such an extent. This only started happening after switching from 32-bit to 64-bit Karmic.

SYSTEM SPECS
Intel Q6600 2.4GHz quad-core CPU
Gigabyte EP45-UD3L motherboard (P45 chipset)
6 GB memory
Disk space: 2x 250GB drives + 1500GB RAID5
Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit
Linux 2.5.31-20 kernel

Ubuntu :: Karmic Koala - Keyboard And Mouse Not Working Upon Login

Jun 18, 2010

Upon booting mouse and keyboard work for a short duration, sometimes it works on optimum level though. If I speedily type in my password it will go through and then freeze before logging. This appears to be a known problem in Lucid Lynx I was wondering if there was a fix for a certain update [URL]

Ubuntu Installation :: Keyboard And Mouse Failure When Trying To Run Live Disk

Oct 9, 2010

Keyboard and mouse failure when trying to run a live Ubuntu disk on an Acer Aspire M1641 desktop. I was trying to show off the Ubuntu system to a colleague when to my surprise as it booted up both keyboard and mouse died. There was no response at all, the only option was to use the power button, rebooting into Vista all back to normal. I tried several other versions of Ubuntu going back 8.04 even Knoppix failed to get the keyboard and mouse working. Even after re installing the windows drivers and several more attempts even changing keyboard and mouse, I could not get any linux live disk to work.

Fedora Hardware :: Mouse Jumps On Network Activity / What To Do?

May 21, 2010

I'm after fresh install of Fedora x64, did all updates. I have wireless pci card TP-LINK TL-wn510G (Atheros chipset) which was detected correctly.

Everything is working smoothly until I start to download from internet in firefox (or in konqueror - no difference). On increased network activity my mouse cursor starts to lag/jump when moving - it's almost impossible to do anything using mouse when there is file download. On minor traffic, like browsing webpages, I don't notice such behaviour.
I checked if its rather because of hdd activity not the network, but no - when copying big file on hdd everything works fine.
I'm also experiencing huge ssh lag/jitter despite the ping is low.
I fired top when downloading, but there is no process eating cpu in suspicious way.
I have a regular usb mouse.
On the same computer I have installed Win 7 and OpenSuse and nothing like this happens on that systems.

I think there might be a some kind of conflict between wifi card and usb mouse (they share resources) but don't know how to check/repair. Could you please tell me how should I proceed to check what is going on. I haven't modified any hw settings, the installation went w/o any errors.

Ubuntu :: No Mouse Busy / Loading Animation For Applications (cursor Activity)

Jul 4, 2011

I've noticed that the majority of the time I will double click an icon to launch and application the cursor activity (mouse loading/busy icon) will not show. The application will launch but there is no indication whatsoever that it's starting up. I haven't had this problem with other Linux distro's and I'm wondering if it's a setting or some sort.

I did notice that on a few applications it works just fine and it will do the loading animation. However, a lot of them will not show it at all. This is very frustrating especially if the application takes a bit to load and you don't know if you even launched it to begin with. Is this a bug or something that can be turned on?

I do hope I explained which animation I'm referring to. It's the circular loading animation that occupies the mouse when you are waiting for an application to finish launching. I'm not entirely sure if this is a gnome thing. Seem to work just fine on my old KDE desktop.

Ubuntu :: System Unreponsive During Disk Activity (9.10)?

Mar 15, 2010

I have Karmic installed on three different computers (work, home and laptop), but on my home desktop there is a strange performance problem. During disk activity it sometimes becomes completely unresponsive. The mouse cursor doesn't even move. It actually seems fine when it first boots up, but it gradually gets worse as I use the computer for a while until it eventually becomes completely unusable. I'm only having trouble on the one system. The drive in the system is SATA, and I already checked to make sure DMA was on. It is a x86_64 kernel.I tried adding noapic to the kernel boot line after some googling, but it seemed to have no effect

Ubuntu :: Constant Disk Activity - Light Flashes About Twice Per Second

Apr 6, 2011

I understand that Ubuntu typically has some disk activity even when idle, but I believe that I have a problem that I am worried is affecting my disk drive - which has recently become quite loud. The system disk activity light flashes about twice per second, all the time, when idle. iostat shows a Blk_wrtn/s of between 10 and 40. I am running Lucid x64. The system disk uses ext4 for root and ext4 for /home. The disk activity starts before I even log in. There is no disk activity if I drop to the root shell in recovery mode - as seen by no flashing light and iostat writes = 0. I have tried killing my media server processes, Mediatomb and Squeezeboxserver. I have unmounted the ntfs data drive. There is nothing else running beyond the vanilla install to my recollection other the services above that I stopped. How can I determine which process is causing the constant writing? I do not have this issue on my laptop which is running Karmic, and as I mentioned earlier, I think this non-stop activity is damaging my drive.

Fedora Installation :: F15 Upgrade - Disk Led Showed No Activity

May 30, 2011

I followed the guideline 'How to use PreUpgrade' to upgrade F14 -> F15. What happened was that after reboot: 1. The screen was a mess ... no readable information 2. No reaction on pressing 'return' 3. The disk led showed no activity, so I reseted the computer after 5 minutes inactivity. The system came up but with F14. I repeated the 'preupgrade' and all messages are in [URL]... but still F14 comes up after reboot. Where have I missed ... eager to get F15

Software :: Intense Disk Activity At Login FreeBSD 8.1

Nov 12, 2010

For about 15 minutes or so after login on my FreeBSD 8.1 (yes, I know its not Linux) the hard drive goes absolutely crazy with activity. So much so that it takes a while for the ls command to read the contents of the directory. But after the 15 minutes or so the disk activity calms down and returns to normal.

Im thinking it is some sort of fsck command, but I am unsure where or how to disable it. The hard drive is connected via sata to the mobo. Im not quite sure what other info I can post to find out what is going on. Just tell me what other info is needed and Ill post it up.

Debian Configuration :: Periodic Disk Activity With System Being Idle

Jan 12, 2011

I keep noticing disk activity every roughly 1 to 3 seconds even though there is "nothing" going on. Of course, I run a number of "system" and "user" application packages - Apache2, MySQL, Browsers (Opera, IceWeasel), an SMB client and server, OpenOffice 3.0RC8 being the most prominent ones. I wonder what might be the cause for this constant disk activity which happens even when none of the applications do any noticeable work at all. Is there a way to determine the process that does those disk read/writes?

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade To 12 From 11 - Screen Goes Blank With Alot Of Disk Activity

Dec 15, 2009

I attempted to do the upgrade from 11 to 12 with the Preupgrade Assistant. Unfortunatly something went terribly wrong. Everything went well, excluding the size of partition error, untill the reboot. I did have to remove two previous installs. Now grub gives me an option to upgrade to Fedora 12. When I select this the screen runs code quickly and the screen goes blank with alot of disk activity. Then nothing. Is there a method of recovering this install? I am fairly new to Linux Administration and I am just knowledgable enough to mess things up.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Use The Mouse While Using Karmic In Firefox

May 22, 2010

It's happened twice recently, once in Karmic while in Firefox, and now in Lucid while in Gedit. The mouse becomes unresponsive to clicks, but when moved the pointer highlights the portion of the screen it moves across. Both times I had to alt+sysreq R-E-I-S-U-B to recover, but in hindsight I think I could've simply ctrl+alt+del and let it count down the 60 seconds to shut down the system. I'm curious as to what could be causing this and what I may try to prevent it in the future.

Ubuntu :: Rotate Cube With Mouse Scroll (Karmic)

Mar 17, 2010

I just switched from Jaunty to Karmic, and in the process of setting up desktop effects, I'm having a hard time with configuring the rotate cube compiz effect. Before, I was able to scroll on the desktop (ie, not over a window/application) to spin the cube to the next face. Now, it seems that I either have to use keyboard shortcuts or lose the ability to scroll in applications.

I've tried enabling the mouse scrolling to button 4/button 5 a la this post, but this doesn't fix the problem. This is one of the few desktop effects that really made a difference in terms of convenience, so I'd really like to be able to fix this setting.

General :: Ubuntu: Tool For Displaying Disk Activity In General And By Process?

Oct 12, 2010

My Ubuntu system is occasionally becoming very sluggish. I'm running many things simultaneously and it's very difficult to tell which program is the culprit.

I suspect that the sluggishness is due to disk activity since the CPU usage is consistently under 50% on each of the 4 cores of the CPU, and over 30% of the 6GB of RAM are free.

Is there a tool that can show me in real time the number of disk IO operations per second and the amount of data read/written per second? Can all this info be broken down and displayed per process?

Why would there be a 15-second pause (during which the disk is slammed) between mounting root and mounting swap? During this time I see nothing but a blank purple screen, there are no cycling dots or text scroll. Is this normal and I'm just freaking out over nothing because there's no indicator of progress? Ubuntu :: Keyboard And Mouse Won't Respond

Aug 8, 2010

I'm having some weird problems with my mouse and keyboard. I'll be moving the mouse and keyboard about and all of a sudden the keyboard won't respond and the mouse moves and is fully working, but it seems to be a problem with the desktop, more then the mouse, because it'll highlight stuff and certain stuff will open when I click them, but when I go down to the toolbar, and try to click applications, places, and system, it'll highlight it but not respond when I click it. This happens about every 45 Minutes, to 1 hour of time with ubuntu running [10.04] [Additional details]

- I'm using an HP Pavilion Dv6000 Laptop, 64 Bit Ubuntu 10.04
- My drivers are all up to date
- Could it be because my Laptop gets really hot? But it dosen't happen ever when I'm running Windows, so I'm not so sure about that.
