Ubuntu :: KWord, No Highlighting Shown When Selecting Words (or Cursor)?
May 6, 2011
When I'm using KWord and I try to highlight text or even click to another line, it doesn't show the highlight or the cursor.I ran the program via Konsole and got the following output:

1) Burned Ubuntu 10.10 to a disk, When tried to install (Select Install Ubuntu) screen goes blank with dim backlight and a blinking cursor on top. Same thing happens with Try Ubuntu without installing.. 2) Tried on Lenovo T410 and Dell 1330. issue exactly remains the same.3) Tried it on a VM Worksation 6.0, "This kernel requires an x86-64 cpu but only detected an i686 error is popping up". So thought its a Ubuntu x32 an compatibility, hence downloading the 64 bit now. Will burn and check it later.

I just reinstalled Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and an old problem has come back. For some reason I couldn't fix it even in my previous installation. The problem is the top gnome panel. See the photo below: As you can see, the network icon is not shown properly while the Me menu is being shown twice. I can't even restart or log out or shut down at this situation without pressing the keystroke to turn the power off.

I recently installed KDE 3.5 on Debian 5.0. I also installed kword, kspread, and the rest of koffice. I find, the installed applications don't appear in the kmenu and they also won't start from a terminal. They print no error message when started from the terminal.
Why won't they start?

I am a graduate student writing a dissertation in modern history. More than half of my computer work takes place on a word processor.I take notes, make outlines, and then write drafts of papers, chapters, presentations, etc. I regularly have to share these files with others who use operating systems other than Linux.I have just switched from OS X (after 5 years and half of using Mac) and I am still figuring out how to write my next dissertation chapter in Ubuntu.
There seems to be no consensus on what is or what are the best word processing softwares -- especially for academic writers -- in Ubuntu or Linux for that matter.I have read a number of posts on various forums and I find them either dated by several years or not dealing with the problems I am facing :
namely writing a serious, book-length academic work in the humanities and desiring to work with a user-friendly and fast word processor that would also be powerful enough to accomplish most or all academic tasks such as footnotes, style change, bibliography, accessibility, etc. There are people who suggest using LaTeX (LyX, Kile, etc.) but it seems to me that they're mostly based in the exact sciences and benefit from the math and science features that exist in LyX or another LaTeX editor. LaTeX is moreover not very accessible to those who do not know the LaTeX language or do not have an editor and work primarily with a word processor: meaning that when I share a LaTex document with my colleagues they have difficulty editing my work. See for instance this discussion which took place 5 years ago on this forum:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=98120
I wonder if those of you who are in similar fields (i.e., humanities, social sciences, law, etc.)could chip in and talk about your experience as academic writers working primarily from a Linux (specifically Ubuntu) platform. What are the word processing applications you use to write your serious papers? What are the advantages and disadvantages of OpenOffice.org Word Processor, Kword, and AbiWord? How easy or difficult is it to share your documents with others who do not use Linux? In what format/s do you share your documents? Can others easily modify and edit your texts? Do you use LaTeX at all?Opinions may vary with respect to discipline, which word processor to use for writing their articles, dissertations, or books.
My own personal experience with OpenOffice.org has not been very positive. It's pretty slow and has problems with multiple language input. Switching from Nisus Writer Pro and Mellel (both OS X softwares), OpenOffice.org Word Processor seems also not very user-friendly. It seems to follow the design of MS Word (or what MS Word used to be) and feels above all *cluttered.* I am however trying to like it as I understand there's probably no other word processor better than OpenOffice.org in Ubuntu. Am I correct to assume this? I also downloaded Kword which in terms of interface and egronomic design seems quite nice. It is also a bit faster -- although I don't know how powerful Kword is at the moment and whether it can accomplish all that my academic work requires from a word processor. I have also read somewhere that AbiWord is really not all that powerful. It is meant to be a fast but "lean" word processor which would do basic things quickly.

I am trying to change the current association for MS word documents from Kword to openoffice. I guess I'm following closely the indicated step in the manual, i.e.: ~ xdg-mime default openoffice.org-writer.desktop application/msword but when I check it I get this: ~ xdg-mime query default application/msword kword.desktop

Im running netbook remix on a eeepc 1005ha. It is my only OS and Im loving it except for one obnoxious quirk. It randomly cuts text and randomly pastes it. If there is something in the clipboard, it will usually paste that, but just as often it will cut random text and paste that. The pastes occur when the cursor focus jumps back to the location of the cursor on the screen. I dont know a better way to phrase that, but thats what it is doing. Say... I put the cursor over the word "pastes" in the paragraph above... even though Im typing in this paragraph, the focus will "jump" to the cursors physical locale (the word "pastes") and then paste whatever is in the clipboard. If the cursor is outside of the textbox, the page will jump to the bottom.
This behavior occurs across programs and in any place text can be entered. I can find no rhyme or reason for it... it just... happens. Sometimes even when Im away from my computer, so its not like Im hitting some key on accident. I have loved everything about this ubuntu distro, but this issue is just toany obnoxious. Writing psych papers on this thing is going to be near impossible if I dont get this fixed before I go back to school.

Am running Ubuntu NBR as the sole OS on my Dell Mini 9. Switched over in March to 9.10 NBR. Everything worked fine.Upgraded to 10.04 when it was released. It's awesome EXCEPT for this busy cursor thing. As soon as I log in, all the time my cursor is the spinning wheel of busyness.... It works just as a normal cursor would - my computer also does not seem to be slower due to any operations. If I open an application, the cursor will behave as usual within the window but if I more my cursor to the title bar or switch out of the application, the "busy cursor" resumes.

I've been battling with this weird problem for a while now and since I can't seem to find a decent answer I'm hoping one of you guys can steer me in the right direction. The problem is simple... syntax highlighting is not working consistently on ".rb" files.
My user name on my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is jean-marc. So if I do
touch /home/jean-marc/testing.rb
and then
gedit /home/jean-marc/testing.rb
The file comes up as "Plain Text"
If I copy the file into /tmp/ and do gedit /tmp/testing.rb
the file comes up as "Ruby"
If I do
gedit /home/jean-marc/afile.rb
and the file does not exists the file comes up as "Ruby"
If I manually set the Syntax Highlight mode on my file gedit seems to remember it. Since most of the files are generated through scripting they all come as "Plain Text" and it's definitely not the best way to edit them. Also, the files, no matter where they are show up as "Ruby script (application/x-ruby)" when showing the attributes through nautilus. Now, before someone tells use, use this software or that software instead of gedit, well I'm happy with the tool and its plugins. I'm efficient with it and I'd rather stick to it.

I have OpenSuse 11.4 with KDE 4.6.2 in my laptop. The version of Kile I am using is 2.0.86. I would like to change the bracket highlight color from Black to Yellow (In previous version of Kile it was yellow). I have found no option to change the bracket highlight color in settings -> configure kile. The documentation says that it is possible but does not mention how. Can anyone help me in this regard ?

I have Open Office 3.2 with Ubuntu 10.04.When I select text-- a word, a few words-- and then click on highlight on the toolbar, it highlights the whole paragraph, rather than just the selected text. This is a new problem for me, before it seemed to be working fine.
I searched online but haven't been able to find anything about this problem. I had tried to install the sun version of Open Office a few months ago, but wasn't able to in the end: [URL] I saw that OpenOffice 3.3 is out, but I would rather not upgrade until Ubuntu puts out the upgrade.

However, while okular seems (after lengthy evaluation) my preferred pdf viewer for READING. I still have yet to find a good application option for reading AND annotation and highlights.Where and how do I get to the okular annotation tools? Can't find them. Also, on a different, but somewhat related topic okular has been reviewed as problematic because its highlights and annotations can only be viewed in that application (this may not be a prob because cross-platform but that still seems risky to put highlights on doc only viewable in one app.looking for fixes/alternatives to that).

I'm using a dark theme (Obsidian Coast) which is making things a pain to read using the default LaTeX syntax highlighting and color schema of Kate. I can edit the schema just fine, but that does not affect the colors of certain highlighting features, such as the color of expressions which fill in the ellipses of "section{...}", which turn out black or "egin{...}" which turn out dark blue.
Is there any way to fine-tune the highlighting features of a particular kind of markup (LaTeX in my case)?

I'm having a strange problem with Firefox. I like to tab through text boxes rather than clicking on each one. Problem is, I don't really know if it has anything to do with the tabbing honestly, but I'll type in the box I'll get one letter than it will highlight it all on its own and then obviously get replaced with the next letter I type. I can type one letter, press the forward arrow and type another letter then it automatically highlights the 2 letters, etc etc. I'm really not even sure how to stop it, I try clicking in the box and they doesn't seem to do anything. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with firefox 3.6.6.
