Ubuntu :: Integrating Thunderbird Into Messaging Indicator In Natty?
May 21, 2011
I use Thunderbird for my email, and I cant figure out how to integrate it into the message indicator. I downloaded an .xpi file and tried installing it, it would work. I've done some other research and only found stuff for older versions of ubuntu, but nothing for integrating it in Natty

It was there until I just now added skype to the messaging menu. I did this by typing "gksu gedit /usr/share/indicators/messages/applications/skype" in terminal and adding /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop to the file. After i done that i checked the applet and evolution was gone. It now shows "chat" on top, then "broadcast", then skype. The evolution file is still there containing "/usr/share/applications/evolution.desktop" I did notice there being two the same evolution icons in "/usr/share/applications" + the evolution mail and email settings icons.
This probably isn't of importance but the only other thing i ever changed earlier in the application applet was adding emesene. I deleted emesene and since i diddnt quite know how do delete text file made for it so I just removed the "/usr/share/applications/emesene.desktop" text from the file. Also when i had emesene installed and the icon in the indicator applet it showed on top is it possible for me to get the skype icon on top as well?

I currently use mail-notification to alert me to new email, it sits in the system tray. When a new mail comes in it alerts me as such. I DO NOT have to have thunderbird open or running to be notified. I want to replace mail-notification with indicator messages. I want the same functionality that I got with mail-notification. That is, to have an icon sitting in the notification area that alerts me when new mail arrives. I do not want to have thunderbird open for this to occur.
I have lib-notify installed. I have the notify add-on installed in thunderbird, I have indicator-messages installed. I have thunderbird.desktop in /usr/share/applications I have a file called thunderbird that has one line which is the path to the desktop file above in /usr/share/indicators/messages/applications/ With this when i click on the icon in the notification area i DO see the listing for thunderbird, but the icon is not correct, it has a black bacground with a red circle in it with a slash. When i click on this item thunderbird launches. I do not recieve notificaion messages (i.e the letter icon does not turn green) unless i open thunderbird and check for messages manually. This defeats the purpose of having a notification in the system tray. Additionally changes made to /usr/share/applicatons/thunderbird.desktop are not reflected in the indicator.

In my top right corner I got all my Ubuntu appindicators that come with Ubuntu 11.04. I also have Dropbox, caffeine and screenlets. Problem is that I cant click on dropbox, caffeine, battery indicator, wlan or sound indicator until I first click on messages menu and slide over to appindicator that I need. When screenlets appindicator is not present there is no problem. Its the same when I had Jupiter installed.

So I've been asked to install a file/printer server and, possibly, inet proxy for a small office (5 PCs). My concern is: There are:4 PCs on XP x32 1 PC on Win7 x642 Printers, one of them with a scanner Some buisness software they use does not cope with win7.Had hard time installing additional x64 drivers for printer (which are obsolete by now, I guess). Network runs on a simple router which is connected to internet. For now they have been using simple sharing of C: folders, which had freaked my out a bit.
So..Despite XP being old and a presence of x64 machine on the network, do I:install x64 server edition install x32 one What additional software, besides Samba and printer/scanner drivers, I will need to handle both architectures? I have rather basic understanding of how servers work, i.e. I run samba, apt-cacher, torrents on my home network.

okay so we have multiple servers running CentOS and multiple people who need access to these machines for various tasks. i would like to be able to use the credentials from Active Directory (running on server 2008) to give them access to these servers without having to go through each server and add these people into permission groups. basically a single sign-on for all of these servers depending upon what permissions were granted in Active Directory. how do i go about doing this?

In my nagios server, an htaccess file have been created for it so any time you want to open it, a window opens for you to enter user name and passwords. Now, what I want to do now is to integrate the nagios into a portal that is written in php so that when customers login to the portal, they can access the nagios with out it popping out the user and password windows. What is going to happen is, the password of nagios will be store in an orient database so the users when they try to access nagios true the portal, they will be login automatically.

Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

For some reason, since logging in recently, I've got 2 instances of the Broadcast in the messaging menu. One of them is indicated as running, the other one is not. When I select the one that isn't running, a *third* instance of the Broadcast button appears - so I now have 2 running, and one not running in the messaging menu. In the usr/share/indicators/messages/applications folder, I have 3 files - Gwibber, Empathy, and Thunderbird.

Is there a program already set up to do this? Probably similar to WASTE (URL...), though waste's client is currently unsupported on the newest version of ubuntu (make error having to do with char* or something). Preferably windows and linux supported. Another thing that could be of use would be a local ssh chat. For example someone connects to my box either as me or as another user and runs 'hiben' and a window (or i ran a command or something and have a window open for it) pops up that we can chat in. Something other than single line messages.

Is there a way to install am empathy compatible server on a linux machine? What am I looking for?Here is the scenario. We have a small business with a lot of people on the road. We also have a small VPS machine we use for small things, I would like to install a messaging server on that machine with users and passwords that I can connect Empathy chat clients to from our users computers. 80% of all our computers are Ubuntu so hence the reason to use empathy, it's default in 11 and integrated quite well.Something that would also be compatible with Pidgin for our few Windows Clients we have.

I have found some info on how to let apps put their icons in the notification panel. This involves using dconf-tools to whitelist some apps in the com.canonical.Unity.Panel gsetting. Firstly, I'm using ubuntu classic, not unity. I assume the above would still apply for my notification panel settings? Anyway, that is not my question. What I am wondering, The messaging icon in that panel, when you click it, you see things like "Setup Chat", "Setup Mail" etc. I don't plan on using empathy or evolution. In fact, I've uninstall them both and installed Pidgin instead. Is there a way to edit that messaging menu to either remove those 2 options at the top that are useless to me, or have them look at other IM/email clients instead of the ones they are expecting to invoke. E.g. "Setup Chat" is irrelevant, as I have already set it up. Since I don't have empathy installed anymore, clicking that option has no effect.

I do not use Empathy or Evolution, the default programs used by the messaging panel notifier in GNOME. Rather, I use Skype and Thunderbird for all my needs. Is it possible to change the settings in the panel notifier to use these programs instead? Otherwise, the notifier is completely useless to me and I'd like to remove it individually without removing any of the other panel notifiers that I do use, which is what happens when I right click it and choose "Remove from panel."

I've finally found out how to add Thunderbird to and remove Evolution from the Messaging Menu. the only problem is that the Thunderbird notifier will only monitor my inbox.I use procmail to filter messages server-side, and want to check for the presence of new messages in another folder. The only app I've found that can do this so far is mail-notification, which can be pointed to directories other than Inbox.if/how I can integrate this into the Messaging Menu interface? Or are there any other solutions?

I booted up my laptop as usual and found that when I opened Empathy IM Client it would not allow me to login when I changed the status to Online (or equivalent). Normally as soon as I open the client the Messaging Status can be changed in the top right next to the clock so I tried to remove it but unfortunately it took the shut down panel with it.
To try and bring them back I used the restore panel commands in terminal:
Code:
$ gconftool-2 --shutdown
$ rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
$ pkill gnome-panel
Unfortunately the panels all reloaded, but without any change.
1. How can I restore the shut down and messaging section to the top panel (as is in the default)?
2. How can I get instant messaging to work again?
PS. I'm a Ubuntu noob, only installed it about 2 days ago. Thus I may need some very basic instructions to anything complicated.
EDIT: I just found the panel section was called the Indicator Applet, but now it's in the wrong place...

Not sure if this is in the right spot...but here goes. For those familiar with mac os x, they have a messenger program that along with iMessage, also allows you to send SMS text while on your computer via text message forwarding with your phone. I was just wondering if there is anything similar to this that I could use while in Debian 8?
