I am new to Linux, I have recently bought a mini laptop for my daughter and it has linux installed. After initial looking through the linux software, (which I love) she has somehow managed to put in a user name and password, but has no idea what it is.How do I login without this information.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm on Debian Lenny. I've shared a folder on gnome GUI, then went to win 7. I see my machine, SERVDEB01. When I click on it, I get the login popup. The workgroup set in samba is FILE-SHARING, so I login with the following: FILE-SHARINGmyuser password and that's when I get the unknown username or bad password thing.
I had a look to /etc/samba/smb/conf security = user is uncommented the shared folder appears at the end of the config file In despair, I've also created an identical user on win 7 and the linux box. I've been into the security Local Policies of windows 7 set NTLM to LM and NTLM (instead of NTLMv2) Here's my smb.conf in case it's needed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedNewb here and this is my first time installing Ubuntu. Created the LiveCD from download of ISO 9.10. PC is a Dell D505 laptop with a clean reformatted, defragged HD. Install goes ok up until first screen with a background and the software asks me to login using a username and password. I haven't been asked to set up a u/p up until this point so I'm stuck. ENTER doesn't work, root/root doesn't work. I've downloaded other ISO files, reburned etc and its the same each time.

I just want to setup a test web server that more closely mirrors our actual web server that is hosted by rackspace. I've installed centOS and tried to setup Apache, PHP and MySQL from a guide on the web using Yum. When I go to localhost in the web browser I'm able to see the default apache page. I've been searching alot on the internet and I know the issue is permission related, but I don't know how to fix it. I've seen some forum posts that say you need to use the chmod 775 command on the /var/www/html folder.Currently when I do ls -l /var/www/html it returns

I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Ubuntu as a secondary operating system on my Windows 7 PC.
System specs as follows:
AMD Athlon II X4 620 Processor 2.6 Ghz
4.00 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 4600 series video card
I downloaded the 32-bit ISO image from ubuntu.com and burned it to a CD. When I try to boot, I get a purple splash screen with a couple of icons on the bottom. Shortly thereafter, I get another screen that says Ubuntu and has 5 dots on it that change color from red to white in sequence. During this time, my CD drive is active. After a very long time, the drive goes quiet and I get an error that the installer can't find the username or password. I don't remember the exact text of the error message. The system was hung and required a hard boot to recover.
Reading these forums, I rebooted the computer and this time pressed the escape key once the display had changed to the Ubuntu with the dots. The username/password error came up quickly and was followed by several "Bus error" messages. I ejected the CD and restarted the computer in order to come here for enlightenment. I'm reasonably good with Windows but a total neophyte when it comes to Linux. I'm going to try it again and this time record the exact error message (which is what I should've done initially).

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 x64 as a base for my custom live cd and i could not change the username. I changed my /etc/casper.conf and /etc/lsb_release, yet still nothing changes. Is this achieved with casper/ubiquity and preseeding at all?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu Server three times now. It "NEVER" asks for a "USERNAME". I can't log in to the clean install. Guess what? I never entered a username, so I don't know what it is. I have never logged in. Don't ask me to go to /etc/, I can't log in. It is NOT a video proplem, Ubunto Server is command line OS.

I'm asked to enter a network system name during install. I'm asked for a password, then repeat it during install. but never asks for a "UserName" during install. So, what is it? root? ubuntu? default? Nope, I've tried many many many of them, even admin, nothing works.
I am using an old username which I have been tied to since my first install, any time I have tried to change it in the past lead to problems such as duplication of files and permission access.
I have a small / partition and a larger /home partition where I store media etc, and on freshly reinstalling Ubuntu 10.10 on / today I was tempted to use a preferred more accurate username and change the computer name - would there still have been consequences to this, if so can they be addressed post install, or can I some how simply just change my username and computer name without confusing my system from here without reinstalling?
*I carried out the re installation using my old usual username and computer name.
Is there a guide somewhere to install Ubuntu without it asking for location/username/etc until first boot, and also have a reinstall? Kind of like what Dell does.I ask because I'm considering refurbishing some old PCs for one of those headstart places, where I'm not going to know who ends up with it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried installing lubuntu 'over' ubuntu, but am now locked out. Basically, the login screen loads, I've tried entering my username and password, but it doesn't work. I'm not really sure of my username as Ubuntu would automatically fill it in for me. But lubuntu isn't auto-loading my username, so I've been trying to enter all types of variations. I am 100% of my password though
I tried getting help at lubuntu's chat, but that's been kind of hard since there aren't that many people responding. The lubuntu people had me go into recovery mode (2.6.38-8 recovery) and so that would go smoothly. But when the screen of the options of resume, clean, dpkg, failsafex, etc, I cannot move the selector down. So basically, the orange selector is stuck at resume. Whenever I press the down key, the computer runs some lines, and I cannot go back to the list of options. The list is still visible, but can't select any of the options.
If I press the 'end' button, that executes something (probably the last option in the list), and I shut down the pc when it did that. The other arrow keys do nothing. The tab button manages to move the selector from the list to 'Ok' and 'Cancel.' But I cannot move the selector down.. TL;DR: I need to either get into recovery mode, or find a way to get my exact username lubuntu thinks it is.
explain the difference between these two commands. I'm currently reading about changing your mac address and both of these commands show up a lot. They sound like the same thing to me. Is one better than the other, or do you need to use both to change your mac address?

Short Description: I wanted to see what would happen if I upgraded from Kubuntu 8.04 (32bit) to Ubuntu 10.4 (64bit) by copying my home directory then restoring it after the upgrade. It almost worked sans a few interesting problems that I'm hoping might teach me a bit more about how Ubuntu works.
Detailed Description:
1. I copied my home directory to another hard disk.
2. I let the installation disk for Ubuntu 10.4 (64bit) reformat and overwrite the disk that contained Kubuntu 8.04 (32bit) and chose to maintain the partition and swap size for that disk.
3. Once I worked out some bugs in the hardware and got the OS up and running smoothly, I "merged" my home directory with the backup I had created in step one. (Merge was an option given to me when I was attempting to paste the files copied from the backup disk.)
4. It should also be noted that I was trying for a while last night to install TrueCrypt. In order to do that I had to check its "sig" file. The GUI for the gpg installation was complaining that I didn't have gtk+-2.0 installed so I installed gtk (I think it might have been 2.4 or whatever the most recent one was) from source without any errors. It got late so I gave up on attempting to install TrueCrypt any further.
The Results: This morning the computer seemed to boot faster than it had been before, but I was left without a functioning Theme manager. It will open, and I can click on all of its features, but nothing seems to do anything. For example: If I right click on the desktop and choose "Change Desktop Background" Then select "Get more themes online", nothing happens. Also if I select the "theme" tab, there are only two themes listed when there used to be about 9 by default.
Questions: 1.) Is there a way to restore the files that are important for correct system operation (possibly all the files starting with a dot ".*") in my home directory to there default state like they would have been from a fresh install, but without doing a fresh install and without loosing any of the documents or archives in my home file?
2.) Is this even the correct approach or might this cause more problems? For example, if your computer had this problem would you try and restore the home directory, or would you troubleshoot each problem as it arises one at a time until everything became stable?
3.) What could I do next to continue troubleshooting the theme manager?
I'll keep researching and trying to find some links that can help while I wait for your responses. If I find anything that helps I'll post the fix here.
I'm having a hard time installing Ubuntu 10.10 (32bits). I load the CD and everything's ok throughout the installing procedure, but when the installation is over and it says it's gonna reboot it doesn't do it!
The screen resembles a terminal with a message like "the computer is going to reboot NOW!" but it could stay like that for hours. The keyboard is locked so I can't reboot by commands, and if I press CTRL+ALT+DEL it just reprints the same message. Therefore I'm forced to turn off my computer manually.
After that, the Ubuntu desktop doesn't load. The screen shows a terminal asking for my username and password to access the computer. No graphics at all.
how I managed this, but somehow during a reinstall I changed the ownership of all my home stuff to root, instead of my normal username. So now nothing loads, unless I sudo it. I had to use sudo just to open firefox.

A day ago I finally got around to upgrading the PackageKit installation that had been sitting for a week and a half, so I found a new upgrade for sudo available - the one that gives the sudoreplay command, I forget which version number it is exactly. When I try to use the sudo command I get this notice in my terminal:Code:Can't open /var/db/sudo/me/1: Permission deniedI didn't get it before. What do I have to do to make it open? I'm using SELinux in enforcing mode if that helps.

Yesterday, a friend of mine deleted one of the partitions (swap+linux) because they weren't being used (weren't even mounted) and he thought I could use the free space. I kept on using the laptop but today I had to reboot it. Instead of getting the usual grub menu I got this:

Whenever I try to install Xubuntu onto my really old computer (not this one), it goes to a screen that shows nothing except the Xubuntu logo and the name. After a bit, my monitor falls asleep, and I am unable to wake it back up.If I press enter while at this screen, it brings up the error message in the title. The same thing happens with all the options I try to press.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 12 a couple of days ago. This is my secondary operating system. The main one is Mint 8 and in order to have the same documents in both OSs I have a separate /home partition, but for some reason I don't see any of my Documents. In the installation I told fedora that I already had a /home partition and to use it. Also if I mount Mint's disk, while I can browse the folders, I can't see any document .
Finally I can access my Mint's home folder and files but since my username in fedora has a capital A it created another home folder. How can I change my home folder path so it point to the other home folder?
