Today i installed Ubuntu 10.10 in my PC. After installing i searched for Menu.lst file in "/boot/grub/" file system, but i didnt find that file in that path. where it gone in ubuntu 10.10? From where the bootloader is taking OS list?

I have already read the related threads but unfortunately, none of the solutions works/ applies to my problem: Having Ubuntu 10.10 as bootable DVD, I am trying to upgrade from Jaunty. When I do so however, after selcting "Install Ubuntu 10.10" in the installer menu I get the "unable to find medium containing live file system" error. I already installed grub2 and set acpi=off, my DVD is on primary master and, obviously boots as well.

I surely have it; it is the default application for opening archives, I can invoke it from the terminal but I can't just... run it from the Applications drop-down.I even tried the Application Finder with no luck using the keywords file-roller, archive, file, roller, .zip. .tar, etc. No luck.Can anyone else find it on their Applications dropdown menu? Or at least tell me that they can't find it either?I'm curious if I have some configuration glitch, or if this is a bug, or maybe there's just something in the water here.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI seem to have determined a few other things about my "only gets as far as a GRUB command line" problem:To recap, sda3 (GRUB hd0,2) is the main Linux partition; sda9 (GRUB hd0,8) is the boot partition.GRUB is 0.92.Installation was from an 8.04LTS live CD (at least, that's what the envelope says it is)/"/boot/grub" (i.e., "/grub" on sd9/hd0,8) contains a "menu.lst" file. I modified it (had to do a "sudo gedit" from a command line!) to (1) comment out the line that hides the boot menu, (2) change the timeout from 3 seconds to 90, and (3) add a menu line based on my succesful manual IPL of DOS.
It still boots to a GRUB command line. If I do a "configfile /grub/menu.lst," a boot menu comes up. DOS will successfully IPL, but Linux still gets a "no setup signature found," (ditto for "recovery mode"), which suggests either a bad kernel, or a kernel that's too big for the GRUB to handle.Why would it be finding its way to grub, but not finding the boot menu file?Why would the live CD come up just fine, yet the GRUB and kernel it installs fail?

In the meantime I've decided to use my external hard drive to hold a version of Linux (ubuntu 10.04) until I am able to replace the internal hard drive. For some reason I am unable to get the external drive to accept the recovery disks I have for Windows 7.
What I'm having issues with is that after installing the Ubuntu OS on to the external, I reboot the PC and it tells me it cannot find a boot file, and won't load anything. I have to run the live cd version of the OS to get anything to work right.

However I then wanted to encrypt the USB using truecrypt inside ubuntu and got an error message telling me it could not find some file. I then installed virtualbox onto the ubuntu this installed fine,i then installed windows xp and after completion clicked save the state. I have verified the disk i created is valid and used it to install on my laptop.

After several failed attempts to install Ubuntu I installed windows XP with no problem.
I have seen several posts about re-aligning this model of hard drive for the 4k blocks.
I have even tried to run the Live CD and All I get is (initramfs) unable to find a medium containing a live file system.With out the CD in the drive I get, Try (hd0,0): EXT2.I have use of the second CD I made for a friend and I have a LIVE version running now.

It perks for a little while showing some Ubuntu stuff then I get the console message "(initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system".I don't get this. It is obviously booting from the CDROM. I'm guessing it does not like the unformatted disk. Why doesn't it offer to format the disk of start the installation prcess? Is it something else?
View 1 Replies View RelatedBackground info: So I installed 11.04 32 bit and it messed my computer up therefore after trying everything I got rid of it, now I've been trying to install the 10.04 long support version from the official ubuntu website and it doesn't seem to be working. Neither the 32 bit version or the 64 bit. To convert the iso etc. etc. I used "Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.6.0" which is reccommended from the ubuntu website and it didn't work. So I tried "unetbootin-win-549" which a friend recommended to me - didn't work either.
Main problem: The menu loads up when I turn on the computer and whether I click on the install ubuntu, or try ubuntu from usb option - both go to the ubuntu screen where the dot's under "ubuntu" flash for about 2 minutes before taking me to a screen where the following message appears: Code: (initframs) unable to find a medium containing a live file system And after about 5 seconds intervals, messages similar to this appear for about 7 or 8 times:

I downloaded debian-6.0.1a-i386-netinst.iso. i would like to burn the cd as iso image but i cannot find the iso file in the downloaded folder. i am going to browse the iso file on vmware.

I come from windows!!! For the life of me, I can't find the (Wine) install environment with the Thunar file manager. For some reason, after i installed wine it doesn't have a link that takes me to the C: drive that Thunar used to open so I could access what I installed thats only compatible with windows, such as World Of Warcraft. I'm bound and determined there has got to be another way to find it!
