Ubuntu Installation :: Difference Between Wubi And Normal Installation

Aug 10, 2010

I installed lucid using wubi to dual boot with vista - I'm just wondering if there's any advantage to be gained into going back into vista, un installing lucid, making the necessary partitions and reinstalling lucid 'properly'.I use both OSs on a laptop so the power issue regarding fs vulnerability isn't that much of a concern.

I`m new to Fedora (but not to Linux generally) and maybe I made some kind of mistake. I`m not quite sure what logical volumes are and I was a little bit scared to use them. I tried to disable logical volumes and put Fedora on my "classical" volumes (partitions) but they looked quite different from what I expected.

Ubuntu Installation :: Difference Between The Ubuntu Installer For Windows And The Ubuntu CD Image?

Jan 2, 2010

What is the difference between the Ubuntu Installer for windows and the Ubuntu CD image? If I use the ubuntu installer for windows, does it have the capability to partition my drive, will it enable to share files with windows etc or is it just a way not to have to burn a CD. Just curious, the exact details of the installation files were not made clear on the website. Note: Windows Version: XP, 32bit, SP3. I have not partitioned anything yet.

Ubuntu Security :: Where To Get Alternative Installation CD?

Aug 17, 2010

I keep hearing about this "alternative installation CD" so that I can encrypt my hard drive. But I can never seem to find it. I would like to use it and do a new install with an encrypted HD. Also, know I can google it, but I was hoping someone could point me to a how to on encrypting grub.

I would like to ask your thoughts of the security of a computer that has the bios password protected, grub password protected and the HD encrypted. I know it all seems excessive unless you are afraid of people who have physical access to your computer, which I am. I also know physical access = root access and that given physical access there is no way to secure the computer, however that does not mean I should not make it harder and more time consuming for the evil maid.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 10.04 To A Laptop - Alternative Method?

May 16, 2010

Currently I've got Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04 (I believe) on my laptop, with two separate partitions.I want to format the laptop and only have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on there, but since the CD drive is broken, I've just been trying to do it from USB. There must be something wrong with my laptop/booting from USB, because I've tried two different programs used to create Live USB installations (UNetbootin and Universal-USB-Installer). Both of them load the menu, let me select to install or run the Live CD, but neither of them get past the purple-ish Ubuntu loading screen. The screen just goes black (But stays lit), and nothing else happens.

So I'm wondering if there is different, easy-ish method for installing Ubuntu 10.04 to this laptop. It's got a working network adapter,

Ubuntu Installation :: USB Flash Drive - Alternative USB Ports?

Aug 9, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 - I want it to sit on another partition along with my Windows XP installation. I don't have a blank CD handy, so I opted for the USB installation option.

I followed the very clear instructions for doing this from the Ubuntu download page [URl].. my PC skips straight over the USB drive and continues to boot into Windows XP. I tried an alternative bootable USB creator (unetbootin-windows-471.exe), but it has the same result.

I have verified that the flash drive is at the top of the boot list - I can also see the name of my flash drive flash past seconds before it boots into Windows, so the PC knows its there. I have also booted into a Live version of Linux using the same PC and pen drive before, so I know booting from it is possible - I suspect the ISO is bad? Or perhaps I'm missing something completely. I tried alternative USB ports too.

Ubuntu Installation :: Downloaded One Of The Alternative CDs And Installing It Both Ways?

Jan 11, 2011

I'm looking to run a dual boot on this laptop. I have Win7 currently installed, and I have my hard drive partitioned and ready to go for an Ubuntu install. I've downloaded the i386 CD from the website, burned it successfully. I rebooted with the disc in, and when I select install to hard drive, it shows a blinking cursor below the install screen and hangs there. I installed the ISO to a bootable USB drive and tried to install it that way, same thing. I even tried downloaded one of the alternative CDs and installing it both ways. Same problem. Ive installed Ubuntu on this laptop before and it's ran successfully. I believe it was 9.04.

Ubuntu Installation :: Get UNR 10.4 To Default To FailsafeX In Normal Mode?

Aug 15, 2010

I've installed UNR 10.04 on an old UMPC. Graphics are a total mess, even console text doesn't display properly. All I get is a bunch of pixels, smeared across the screen. I'd blame KMS, but that's only supposed to affect X. Anyway, according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting/, "KMS is enabled by default for the -intel, -ati, and -nouveau drivers. It is not available for any other drivers". Mine isn't any of those, so KMS shouldn't be enabled at all. I've found that failsafeX in a recovery console works OK. My question is, how can I get UNR 10.4 to default to failsafeX in normal mode?
