Ubuntu Installation :: Synaptic Not Finding Repository Due To Wrong Name / Sort It?

Mar 20, 2011

I have had trouble updating for ages, but only just got round to checking it. Updated to Maverick at christmas 2010.

The essential problem is synaptic (or updte manager) won't talk to the repository. code...

I still get the error.

Where has the system got these filenames stored or where is it getting these aberrant filenames from?

Installation :: Previous Ubuntu Version In Grub Not Recognized In Synaptic / Sort It?

Apr 6, 2011

I recently got my Dell XPS 17 and configured it to do dual boot into Win 7 and Maverick. Apparently, Maverick does not play nice with the newer hardware in this laptop so I decided to upgrade to Natty Beta. All has gone fine except for one little thing. When bootting Grub shows my WIn7 and Natty options but it also shows an option to use the older ubuntu version. It does not actually work as it stops receiving input at the user selection screen. I can't remove the image as it does not show up in synpatic nor is the package found when using the apt-get remove [linux image version] command.

I searched the forums and found that this guy:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/inde...t-1489362.html

was having the exact same problem as me and had tried exactly the same things as I have, and I still don't know how to remove those old files. I don't even know where these config files could be so that I can manually go in and remove them. I could live with the option in the Grub but I'm kind of a tidy freak and it annoys me to have a non-functional booting option taking up space.

Is it correct for me to think that a clean reinstall of natty would purge that ghost from the Grub? Also, how easy is this process and can the process mess up the MBR and not be able to do the dual-boot?

Ubuntu :: Asus Eee Box Eb1501u Not Finding Remote Control Device / Sort It?

Jun 21, 2010

I have a Asus eee box eb1501u running Kubuntu 10.04 LTS (32 bit) and I am trying to get the remote control to work. Many guides for example this one http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title...eeBox_PC_EB150 first states that you should run code...

Before I removed the Windows 7 installation I tested the remote in Windows to make sure it worked and it did. I cant see that there is a possibility to turn on or off the IR-device in the bios settings!? I would really like to make it work in Kubuntu to. I'm pretty n00bish at Linux but I think I can figure it out if someone would point me in the right direction.

Fedora Installation :: Error Getting Repository Data For Installed, Repository Not Found

Feb 14, 2010

Today I installed Fedora12 from the DVD, so this is my first contact with all of you. The last years I ran very well with gentoo, but the time for system maintenance got to big the last few times I updated the system, so I decided to change and here am I. The Problem: My system is newly installed from the DVD and I was trying to run the first update, but got the following errormassage by KPackageKit:

Code:
Error Type:
Error Value: Error getting repository data for installed, repository not found
File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py, line 3125, in
main()
File : /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py, line 3122, in main
backend.dispatcher(sys.argv[1:])
File : /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/packagekit/backend.py, line 710, in dispatcher
self.dispatch_command(args[0], args[1:])

[Code]...

It occured after informing me about the amount of packages that need to be updated and a message about some dependencies that have to be newly installed. At the moment I'm a bit lost about what to do. Also I realy don't know which system-information would be useful - let me know and I will answer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dpkg/synaptic - Recovering Installation Canditates (versions)?

Mar 30, 2011

Well, I was just doing an update, and there was an update for git that was held back. I decided to force this update using 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade', and installation of git then failed. At this point in Synaptic - I could see versions listed as 'lucid', 'lucid-security', and then this ppa version. Then I barely managed to remove git - but now, if I try to install it again, *only* the ppa version is listed in Synaptic - no more 'lucid' and 'lucid-security' versions!!! Does anyone have an idea how I could recover the 'lucid', 'lucid-security' versions? I will try to salvage as much of the terminal with the problems as I can below...

Code:

Ubuntu Installation :: Installation Migration Attempt Gone Wrong

Feb 27, 2011

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bit version) a few months ago on a system with two IDE drives (cable select configuration). The primary drive (/dev/sda) is 40GB and the secondary drive (/dev/sdb) is 80GB. I created all of my partitions on the primary drive and left the secondary drive unconfigured. After a month or so I noticed that two of my partitions had quickly reached 50% capacity, as I had just taken a guess at an appropriate partition size when I first installed Ubuntu.

Since I had a larger unused drive already in place, I decided to migrate my installation from the smaller drive to the larger drive, but sizing the partitions in question more appropriately (i.e., much larger). I assumed that I could install Ubuntu on the bigger drive with larger partitions, byte-for-byte copy all my existing partitions from the old disk to the new one, edit /etc/fstab, reboot, and GBTW. Naturally that didn't work as I expected.

Here's what I did: Carefully logged my existing partitions on /dev/sda and their mount points Used a live CD to install the same version of Ubuntu on the larger drive (/dev/sdb), using its partition tool to generously size my partitions. I carefully logged the new partitions and their mount points. For each partition on /dev/sda (except for /boot and swap), I used dd to create a gzip'd image and stored all of those images on a backup drive.

I then used dd to complete the task of migrating all of these partitions (again, all but /boot and swap) to their respective partitions on /dev/sdb.

Ran blkid to see all of my partitions. I noticed that some of the UUIDs existed on both drives. I thought "hmmm...that's weird" and moved on.

Mounted my new root partition (/dev/sdb6) on a contrived mount point.

Edited /etc/fstab (after backing it up) and carefully replaced all the old UUIDs with their respective counterparts on my new drive. Also replaced the device reference for /boot with its respective counterpart.
Crossed fingers. Rebooted. Got some warnings about missing UUIDs.

After the system completely booted, I used the graphical disk utility and saw that the system mounted some partitions from /dev/sda and others from /dev/sdb. Not good.

Here are the steps I took since lurking here:

It seems my installation still has an identity crisis. What steps should I take from here to force my Ubuntu installation to only use my partitions on /dev/sdb?

Was there an easier way for me to migrate my installation to a new drive?

Ubuntu Installation :: Synaptic Package Upgrade ?

Feb 23, 2010

I am trying to get Ubuntu up and running on my Dell XPS 400 desktop. I verified the checksum of the iso (ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso) I downloaded, and I ran the cd check before installing. I also ran a memtest for 16 hours with no errors.

So I install Ubuntu, and everything seems ok. Now, I try to update my software packages, and the upgrade always fails after all the packages are downloaded (sometime during actual installation). So, I have to reboot, and the file system will not mount. I run fsck and reboot, and now I cannot even boot normally or to a shell... This has happened to me twice in row.

What is the best plan of attack when a package fails to install midway? I want to use Ubuntu, but this is making it pretty hard.
