Ubuntu Installation :: Memory Leak Lenovo Ideapad Y560?
Nov 18, 2010
I installed Ubuntu 10.4 and everything works great "out of the box"! I didn't install any drivers.blem, a major one...When I type "top" right after a reboot, around 1GB of RAM is in use. After a few min it grows to 2GB, even 2.5GB for no reason. Luckily, my machine has 6GB of RAM but it's still a major issue for me.I read on another forum another user with the same problem on the same Lenovo machine and he solved it by installing the newest driver for his ATI device. I don't have ATI, but I have the impression that I can solve my problem the same way. Do you have any idea what driver my cause that? I checked the Intel site for a new Intel HD graphics driver but they don't have ones for Linux.

I installed Ubuntu Netbook Edition on my Lenovo IdeaPad S10 yesterday (I was using Window XP before that) and since then I am struggling to connect to the internet. I think the wireless network device is on because Bluetooth is on and there is a reassuring blue light near the wireless symbol. But the network managers says "device not ready" and don't find any wi-fi spot.I've read posts on the subject and followed the instructions from the official documentation.
Code:
> lshw -C network

when i play streaming video in any browser (tried firefox, chrome, opera, and midori), the playback is severely and unwatchably choppy. sometimes it'll be ok for a few seconds and then devolve into choppiness, but usually it's just choppy right off the bat. the audio is just fine, by the way.the odd thing is, videos works just fine, but only if i stick to 360p. anything higher yields the same results. downloaded videos work just fine as well. i've noticed this on vevo.com, cracked.com, and southparkstudios.com. (my age is showing! ) i just tested it on an html5 video from the html5 site and that worked just fine, as well, so i think this is a flash-specific problem.
right now i'm using xubuntu maverick, but i've used both lucid and maverick of xubuntu and ubuntu netbook remix (all 32-bit). i'm using a lenovo ideapad s10-2 (a netbook), and the video card is intel gma 950. i can get more specific if necessary. i've tried both the open source and non-free versions of flash (latest versions, of course) with no difference. i even tried uninstalling flash and using chrome's built-in flash plugin, also with no difference.

I can confirm my machine's GLX version is 1.4, and I definitively get the slow down problem, however, after running in a terminal:
Code:
grep "object bytes" /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/gem_objects
grep: /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/gem_objects: No such file or directory
What am I doing wrong?

I'm currently developping a program in C++, using Qt, for an embedded board (SBC9261).It works well but crashes after some time, due to a system memory overload (my program uses more and more memory until 100%, when it crashes).I've been able to figure out the source of the memory leak :The function f is called by my program every second. f instanciates a new object (a QImage from the Qt lib), does a bunch of processing on it, and returns it to the calling function :
Code:
QImage *MyClass::f(QString filename) {// Open image
QImage *image = new QImage(filename);

I dont know if this issue has already been solved, or if there are other threads dealing with it, but Im quite desperate with this bug that has been annoying me since I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04.
Firs I thought it would be GEM related, but Im using a proprietary graphics card, so thats not the way to solve it. I experience the problems a memory leak provokes, mainly that, as time goes by with the laptop turned on, the system needs more resources to execute simple actions, and it freezes too many times. Plus IBUS will, suddenly, stop working (I still don't know if it is related or not), and, most of the times I log in, Notification Area 2.30.0 will load with errors.

I have 4 gigs of ram and xorg goobles up 70+% in a matter of an hour or so. I'm running a java app with lots of 2D graphics, firefox, pidgin, and one other java app. I recently upgraded to KDE 4.2 and got dual ATI firepro 3700 cards running 3 22" widescreens. The memory gets eaten until my java app crashes.
I'm using the fglrx driver as it seems the radeonhd one doesn't recognize the firepro 3700. Can one only have a single KDE4 version on the machine. I would like to be able to swtch back and forth between 4.1 and 4.2 in order to troubleshoot without all the downloading and installing in yast.

I'm afraid I have a huge issue with my newest Fedora 14 server. I recently migrated to Fedora 14 from Centos 5, which was very stable, but had ancient packages and libraries and my users were revolting...The machine is a HP ProLiant 360 G7, with 12G RAM and 6 SAS drives in RAID 5.After I migrated to Fedora 14, I noticed that for some reason, during the course of about 24 hours, all usable RAM "disappears" and applications are forced down to swap space. Needless to say I didn't have this issue on CentOS.
The server does heavy IO as per it's function (it's a heavily loaded file processing server and user simulation computing station among other things, which causes lots of random IO), so I thought it may be the cache, but then I realized it cannot be - because obviously Linux will use onyl "unused" RAM for caching and frees it up as soon as an app need it. Then, I thought to check the "slabtop" to see what's going on in Kernel memory. Unfortunately I don't have the screenshot from the time just before the latest crash, but there's a certain value displayed by slabtop, which slowly, byte-from-byte creeps over all available RAM, eventually forcing applications down to the swap. This is malloc-64, and as you can see from the bellow copy-paste, it's building up again even now...
Code:
Active / Total Objects (% used) : 9118075 / 9153600 (99.6%)
Active / Total Slabs (% used) : 152157 / 152157 (100.0%)

I updated several packages on one of my servers on Dec 21st and have been seeing excessive swapfile usage since then. The problem process seems to be httpd which in our environment runs a subversion server as well as serving a number of php pages over https. At present I am having to bounce apache approximately every 5 days as it has used all 8GB swap in that time.
[Code]..
Of the updates listed as installed, the only one that looks likely to affect apache is glibc. Looking at the stats from sar -r I can see swap usage increasing by approx 3% (of 8GB) every hour.

I'm using Fedora 15 with Gnome 3 on a 32 bit laptop. I noticed that there seems to be a huge memory leak issue with Gnome shell. When I restart it, it is around 20 MB. But it keeps rising, and after around eight hours, I noticed it was around 250 MB! I found a solution online that said to simply restart the shell if the gnome-shell memory consumption becomes too large. While this is fine as a temporary solution, I am looking for a permanent one. Is there a way to minimize/prevent the memory leak other than waiting for the next version of Gnome 3?

I recently installed ubuntu in my laptop using a usb stick. everything seems to be working fine except the wireless connection. the notification area doesnt show wireless network at all. i tried browsing many forums n folled the steps suggested but in vain. with the command
sudo lshw -C network i get result as:
unclaimed
so, i tried using windows wireless driver (its Broadcom). i cannot install the ndisgkt package from the package manager. The package is shown but when i try to install, the package manager shows 'In Progress' and nothing happens. Hence, System → Administration → Windows Wireless Drivers is not displayed at all.
If a driver can be downloaded n installed, how to do that. I would download the wireless driver from my windows OS n install in ubuntu.

I am attempting to install Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 within Windows 7. The installation process using WUBI worked as expected. However, after rebooting to finish the installation process, I am stuck at:
Completing the Ubuntu installation.
For more installation boot options, press 'ESC' now...

I'm definitely puzzled on why I'm stuck on this screen. Also attempting to boot from USB will be stuck without an additional command line being inserted. I have come across threads relating to boot issues, but I have found no solutions to this. I'm rather annoyed that this sort of bug has not yet been fixed. Earlier this year I installed an earlier version of Ubuntu Netbook, which was most likely version 9. So I have no idea why 10.10 suddenly will not install on my machine.

I have a problem that Ubuntu 10.10 won't run on my Lenovo Ideapad laptop. I have managed to install it over ethernet a few weeks ago an it worked fine, but whenever I try to install it from a cd, installation completes successfully, but the Ubuntu won't start. A black screen with a lot of text on it and then everything freeze.
I have tried it without installing and it worked (live cd). I have also tried to install it on my desktop machine and it worked fine.
On my laptop, I already have a Windows 7 (64 bit) on another partition.
Did anyone have a similar problem?

Finally got my Lenovo X201 up and running by combining a couple of different workarounds suggested for the graphics driver problem that is plaguing so many. This works on my X201 3249CTO, running BIOS version 1.17, with Ubuntu 10.04.1 (kernel version 2.6.32-24). I have tested it to differing degrees with all four relevant installers (32- and 64-bit, desktop and alternate).
STEP 1. Add "xforcevesa i915.modeset=0" at install. When you first start the desktop installer, you should see "ISOLINUX..." in the upper lefthand corner of the screen, followed by a couple of white logos at the bottom of an otherwise blank screen. As soon as you see these logos, press the space bar to get the advanced install menu. If you are using the alternate installer, you will get the install menu automatically.
--Make sure "Install Ubuntu" is highlighted. Press F6. You should see the install command line near the bottom of the screen, plus a popup menu with additional options. Pres Esc to close the popup menu. A cursor should appear at the end of the install command line.

I just started testing ubuntu 10.10 today (first time user!) on my desktop via usb drive and I liked it very much so i wanted to try it on my laptop (lenovo x120e, a relatively new model).
When i tried to use the usb drive on my laptop, I am unable to boot ubuntu at all!
I went into the "boot device" menu (pressed F12, for lenovo users) and to specifically boot from the "USB HDD" drive. This caused the screen to go blank and a cursor started blinking on the top left hand side of the screen. A few seconds later, i would return to the "boot device" menu to try again. (my guess is this is what happens if boot fails).
My laptop has win 7 installed on the hard disk, with no other OS installed. The bios is at factory settings.
I googled this topic and there are many threads out there of users encountering the same problem, none specifically for the x120e model. the other solutions are either too technical for me to understand or may not apply. Below is a list of what i've tried or will try later..
List of things tried/to be tried
1) use unetbootin instead of Universal-USB-installer - tried both, was able to boot from desktop but not on laptop
2) assign a variable to kernel (could not find the exact name, but the variable name had the string "intel" prepended - i didn't try this... my laptop is amd (i don't think it should matter... my desktop is also amd)
3) re-image the usb - done it many times
4) corrupted usb? - seemed to boot on desktop with no issues... tried other usb anyway but no luck
5) Try to install 10.04 - just downloaded it, will try tomorrow
6) Try to remove the hard disk

I'm trying to do a clean install of Lucid (10.04.1) 64-bit on a Lenovo X201, Ubuntu only (no dual-boot), using the alternate install disk for an encrypted LVM.
I followed the default options at all points during installation, except that I opted not to configure the network because the computer is not currently connected to a network. The install (said that it) completed correctly.
When I turn on the computer, it correctly runs the BIOS. Then I get a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the upper lefthand corner. The hard drive accesses a couple of times. After a few seconds, the screen goes off (the cursor doesn't just vanish; the screen actually goes off), and it just sits there indefinitely without booting.
I should note that I've tried this with the boot order in the BIOS set several different ways, including HD first and only, with no effect.
