Ubuntu Installation :: How To Disable / Lock Persistence
Dec 20, 2010
i made a persistent Live USB from the Ubuntu Maverick option Startup Disk Creator in the live cd distro. It works really good, i've installed the apps and changes i wanted, but now i'd like to lock persistency so no new changes or any data whatsoever may be stored. Is there a way to disable this capability so it may behave just like the CD adding the changes i made?

Being and old Gnome user and a brand new XFCE user, does anyone know how to disable the Caps Lock key in Xubuntu 11.04? It's rather easy in Gnome and obviously not so easy in XFCE.

I recently upgraded from Lucid to Maverick I can't seem to disable screen lock after resume from suspend. It's a minor annoyance, but still a considerable annoyance to have to enter my password every time the computer wakes up.
I've thusfar
1 - changed screensaver preferences to not lock
2 - set the gnome_keyring_hibernate, gnome_keyring_suspend, hibernate, and suspend, values all to false in gconf-editor
3 - commented out the line LOCK_SCREEN=true in /etc/default/acpi-support
BUT am still being prompted for a password every time the computer wakes up from suspend. I'm stumped, what could I be forgetting?

I just upgraded machine to natty, after which the xmodmap configuration remapping capslock stopped working (as in not doing anything at all). Running xmodmap manually (-e "clear Lock") doesn't have any visible effect either. I haven't tried doing this on another machine (I'm only close to one machine running ubuntu and reinstalling seems rather overkill), but the same config worked before the upgrade, and is working on another machine running arch.
Is anyone else having these issues and, if so, has anybody found a solution? The line of interest is, simply, "clear Lock".

I'm about to install a version of Ubuntu onto a 32GB flash drive, I've downloaded are Universal USB installer that will do most of the work for me, however, it asks
Step 4: Select a persistence option for your USB
and the options are
1GB CASPER -RW
2GB CASPER -RW
3GB CASPER -RW
4GB CASPER -RW
What is persistence? am I better off having more (ie 4GB) since my flash drive is a 32GB drive?

I have a USB with two partitions, one FAT32 with Ubuntu 10.04 on it, and one ext4 partition labelled casper-rw. According to the docs this should do to create a persistence installation, but I still get the "can't find persistence medium" error when booting.
Did I do something wrong or is this a bug?
I installed with unetbootin on the FAT32 partition and created the partitions using GParted.

I just upgraded to 10.04 (and a new machine) from 8.04 and I can't seem to find a way to have the middle button on my mouse act as a double click like I had it on my old machine. I tried putting the input stanza from my old xorg.conf but then X would not come up. The new tab thing it does in Nautilus is driving me nuts. I see the xorg.conf isn't really used anymore, and there is something about making rules in udev but I can't seem to find the exact wording that I need to make that one rule. I would also like to disable the CAPS LOCK key if anyone knows how to do that without xorg.conf. Maybe someone can point me to a udev tutorial?

It's very disturbing when making a Kiosk application, every time the lock screen and screensaver shows up, also many popup + battery or updates shows up. Where and how can I completely disable the lock screen, screen saver and alerts via a configuration file or from the terminal? I have the tried following but nothing works: failed
vim /etc/default/acpi-support
;LOCK_SCREEN=true
failed
$ gconftool-2 --type boolean -s /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/suspend false
$ gconftool-2 --type boolean -s /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/blank_screen false
$ gconftool-2 --type boolean -s /apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/hibernate false

I presently have a Karmc LiveUSB with a casper-rw partition, but am thinking of changing the LiveUSB image to Maverick, while still using the existing casper-rw partition and its data (mostly settings for Ubuntu itself, haven't installed any programmes). Using usb-creator, by the way. Are the config files for Karmic and Maverick significantly different that this will cause any major problems? [Separately, I think this will have implications for my existing Karmic install, because I'm planning to clone my Karmic /home partition to a fresh Maverick install.

I copy the debian-live-7.6.0-i386-standard.iso to the usb. Now i can live boot into the usb.
I also follow the guide "10.3.1 The persistence.conf file" to make /dev/sda2 my persistence partition. When it boot up and i add the parameter "persistence" it will works. But i want to know how to make it automatically boot with the parameter?
My guess is that i have to make my own live cd then copy to the usb again. If that is it, any tutorial how to make live cd from the live cd i already downloaded?

I've got myself a a Filco Majestouch Convertible 2 which is a USB/bluetooth keyboard.
When I use it in USB mode it works perfectly. I would like to use it in bluetooth mode and I've found that it has problems. When I hit either Numlock or Capslock it stops responding.
I'm running Debian Testing and it was last updated a few days ago (02/05/2015). I've tested the keyboard using Ubuntu 14.04 live cd and it worked flawlessly even hitting Numlock & Capslock didn't stop it.
If I run btmon to monitor the keyboard it shows that after I've hit capslock or numlock it still sends signals to the computer. So there is information being sent to the computer but these characters do not make themselves to my application. I'm just testing with a terminal window.
Here is the output from btmon whilst the keyboard is connected and working:
Hitting the 'a' character
a> ACL Data RX: Handle 35 flags 0x02 dlen 14 [hci0] 16.769645
Channel: 65 len 10 [PSM 19 mode 0] {chan 1}
a1 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ..........
[Code] .....
Here are the versions of software I'm using;
Code: Select allbluetooth 5.23-2 all Bluetooth support
libbluetooth3:amd64 5.23-2+b1 amd64 Library to use the BlueZ Linux Bluetooth stack

In Fedora 10 they decided to change to "evdev", so if you used xmodmap in F9, these mapping have changed in F10 and F11 for that matter. In order to find the new key values start
Code:
xev and press a button you would like to know the keycode for. Write this value down. When done, make a file ".xmodmap" and put in the values. "man xmodmap" explains the format. Not easy to understand! So here is how mine looks like.
Code:
clear Lock
keycode 112 = Caps_Lock
keycode 118 = Delete
keycode 119 = Home
[Code]...
This layout is MUCH more logical than the original. Now Delete is the key just to the right of the Backspace key. Back spaces deletes to the left, and Delete deletes to the right, so these keys shoudl of course be next to each other Page Up, Page Down, Home, and End now have the same structure as the arrow keys below. This layout makes it much easier to navigate without looking at the keys, because now the layout makes sense And why shouldn't 0 be to the left of 1? of course it should. 0 is lower than 1.

I have an Eee PC with a dead Hdd. I brought it back to life by installing Ubuntu 10.10 on a 16GB SD card. It works 100% but is sluggish.Now I am wondering, from the standpoint of reducing SD card access and writes, would it have been better to create a Live Disc on the SD card with persistence options? What I am thinking is that a Live Disc is designed to run out of RAM, and would thus reduce the activity on the SD card. The only thing this netbook will get used for is the internet. It is a netbook, so the performance is limited, but as far as netbooks go, it is top of the line with dual core and discrete nvidia graphics.

I tried a while getting a live system working with encrypted persistence. The command
Code: Select alllive-persistence activate /dev/sdx2
works perfect, but boot time persistence works only for unencrypted storage. 'Cause I can not append the boot-log as file the most important part here:
Code: Select all+ tailpid=123
+ tail -f boot.log
+ cat /proc/cmdline
+ LIVE_BOOT_CMDLINE=BOOT_IMAGE=/live/vmlinuz boot=live noeject keyboard-layouts=de components persistence persistence-encryption=luks,none initrd=/live/initrd.img debug=true
+ Cmdline_old
+ PERSISTENCE=true
+ export PERSISTENCE
[Code] ....
The most confusing line is "Warning: cryptsetup is unavailable" - I took a look into the scripts, it checks if cryptsetup and askpass is executable if not this message. But:
I mounted the hdd-img file local and took a look: all binaries there.
So I tried a lot getting it working on boot time. I tried it with live-tools from testing, from wheezy and last but not least installed and pinned live-tools to unstable. Always the same. askpass isn't executable on boot time before mounting the persistence.
Config is
Code: Select alllb config noauto
--apt apt
--bootstrap debootstrap
--binary-images iso-hybrid
--distribution testing
--mirror-bootstrap http://ftp.debian.de/debian/
[Code] .....
(tried with binary-images=hdd, too)
and yes, cryptsetup is inside package-list (otherwise live-persistence from within running machine with crypted partitions would not work). Live tools I used for last run is 4.0.3-1 from unstable, before tried with 4.0.2-1 from testing.
Whats going wrong in boot system?

When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly.It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]
The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

There is a very strange problem I've been having. When I enable either Caps Lock or Num Lock the media controls on my keyboard cease to work. I have Googled this one to death but found nothing. This problem existed in Xubuntu 9.10 and now still exists in Xubuntu 10.04. The keyboard I use is a Logitech Elite Keyboard. I would love to be able to use the Caps Lock and Num Lock without the worry that I am disabling the media controls

I have just burned the latest CD using infraRecorder, as per the instructions on this site, however when I boot from this CD, it spends about 5 minutes moving the red balls across my screen, then all of the sudden it just freezes, and my caps and scroll lock lights start to blink. I've had a look in the forums already but there's nothing about this happening on Boot of the live CD.

I'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.
I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.
