Ubuntu Installation :: Error - Sil: Only 3/4 Metadata /dev/sda
Nov 4, 2010
When i did my initial install of ubuntu 10.04 server i was using a PCI SIL SATA controller, and i chose the hardware raid 1 setup.. After installation i talked it over with a few colleagues and we decided software raid would better suit our needs. With that being said, I removed the controller and directly connected the disks to the SATA ports on that mobo. At that point, I re-ran the ubuntu server install going through the manual software raid 1 setup.
After completion during restart I receiver two errors:
Error: sil: only 3/4 metadata /dev/sda
Error: sil: only 3/4 metadata /dev/sdb
I assume this is in regards to the hardware configuration with the card, but since the card is no longer installed, and the system was reinstalled i'm having one hell of a time figuring out where this info is stored.
My software raid1 has been running strong for a couple weeks now without issue, so i'd like to resolve this startup error. Its more of annoyance since the system starts.
I wanted to get some additional life out of a computer with 256MB of RAM, and discovered that FC12 was the only version of Linux I was able to install (out of the distros attempted). The installer went into text mode automatically, configuring only the root account. I used text-based tools after the first boot to configure networking, and installed a couple of additional packages with yum. Then I issued "yum update," and it retrieved and installed the available updates. That was the last time I used yum successfully, though. I obtained such error messages as "14: PYCURL ERROR 6" and "Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. verify its path and try again."
I discovered that such problems had been encountered by others, and had sometimes been solved by such methods as adding repositories to yum.conf, adding lines to /etc/hosts, adding a line to resolv.conf, tampering with fedora.repo or fedora updates.repo, or even with "yum clean all." None of these methods worked for me, however. My initial impression of Fedora is favorable, so I might like to try it even on a system where it wasn't the only available choice. Package management is essential to success with any OS, however, so I need to get past this issue.
I installed Fedora 13 in my new system from DVD image. Now I want to update all repositories. I coul'nt update. error message as below: Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. verify its path and try again
I updated my up to date F12 to F13. I have what must be a 640X480 display with no way to change it. I get an error:
"Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: pgdg90. Please verify its path and try again" on all Yum commands so no yum installs are possible. I don't have the /usr/bin/GLX command So theAIGLX doesn't work.
I just did a fresh install of F14 using a Live USB. I can't do a yum update, I'm getting Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora.I've done a yum clean all and I've tried coping the .repos from another F14 system that's working fine.
I'm getting the following error when I try to install anything with yum: Code: Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again. I tried editing /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo, and also amending the host file as explained in this fix. [URL]. Still doesn't work. I am behind a proxy.
whenever I do a yum anything I get this example [root@localhost ~]# yum groupinstall "Development Tools" Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit Adding en_US to language list Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again
I am on RHEL 5.4 and i installed rpmforge for dag repository but failed with error my redhat box get's internet through ccproxy and error is
[root@pendora ~]# yum update Loaded plugins: rhnplugin, security This system is not registered with RHN. RHN support will be disabled.
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el5/en/mirrors-rpmforge error was [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-3, 'Temporary failure in name resolution')> Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: rpmforge. Please verify its path and try again
I started to get an error about repositories recently, when I run Software Management in YaST on my SuSE Linux. The error kept saying `Cannot retrieve repository metadata`.
So, I wrote the following in the terminal to refresh the repositories:
But it deleted the repositories I have. So, I cannot update my software anymore. Also, when I try to add repositories using YaST, the same error message again appears.
Code: DEBUG: Executing /usr/sbin/mock-helper yum --installroot /var/lib/mock/centos-5-i386/root install buildsys-build url [Errno 12] Timeout: <urlopen error timed out>Trying other mirror.Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: groups. Please verify its path and try again at the same time the url works in the FF.
i installed F13 at work in VirtualBox to test Fedora features in order to have a web server under Linux. while playing aroung i run the yum command : yum info kernel and i got the following message:
Quote: Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again i've search on internet and after googling a lot, i tried several solution like: - uncomment all baseurl and commenting mirrorlist - disable networkManager - add http_proxy in yum.conf
however, nothing works internet works well the proof is that i'm writting this thread thanks to F13 :-)
I had a couple of IDE hard disks that had previously been set up as a RAID1 array.I wanted to re-format and use them as separate independent hard disks but Ubuntu reported that they were part of a RAID array. This is how I removed that RAID metadata from the drives. With both drives connected I booted up Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD.
I checked the device names via System, Administration, Disk Utility - they were listed as /dev/sda and /dev/sdbI also noted that there was an extra device with name of /dev/md-0 which was the RAID array. Then I rebooted the PC, and checked the device names via System, Administration, Disk Utility - no more /dev/md-0 and the two drives no longer showed as part of a RAID array.
i am trying to get fc12 up and running. have spent a lot of time reading posts about similar problems, but so far haven't found the right answer. this is what i get when i try to run yum update:
I am getting following error if I try to give the command yum update

I tried all the steps in the post http://rishabhsays.wordpress.com/201...sitory-fedora/ and no success. I am behind a proxy server and got proxy related info in yum.conf file but still facing the same problem.
I even tried following commands with no success

I can connect to Internet but cannot update using yum
There seems to be a bug reported on the same issue in FEDORA13 - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=564509
I have Fedora 13 in a VPS. I cannot work with yum. I got this error: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try # yum list Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. verify its path and try again.
I am trying to configure DNS on my CentOS 5. When i am trying to install BIND using YUM, i am getting the following error.
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5/addons/x86_64/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 12] Ti meout: <urlopen error timed out> Trying other mirror.Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: addons. Pl ease verify its path and try again. I am able to ping from Linux to windows OS. But when iam trying to do
After adding rpmforge on a fresh installation of CentOS 5.4 64bit, I received the error "Metadata file does not match checksum" so decided to try the fix yum -y remove yum-fastestmirror, As discussed at [URL]... Unfortunately, this also deinstalled yum. If I try to reinstall from my CentOS 5.4 DVD, I get:
# rpm -i --aid yum-3.2.22-20.el5.centos.noarch.rpm error: Failed dependencies: yum-fastestmirror is needed by yum-3.2.22-20.el5.centos.noarch
But if I try to install the yum-fastestmirror I get
# rpm -i --aid yum-fastestmirror-1.1.16-13.el5.centos.noarch.rpm error: Failed dependencies: yum >= 3.0 is needed by yum-fastestmirror-1.1.16-13.el5.centos.noarch
I installed FC10, but do not find xfig (command not found)..then I do password:xxxxxxx, and then do the following $yum install xfig, and I get the following error Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit [URL].. [Errno 14] HTTP Error 401: Unauthorized Trying other mirror. Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: adobe-linux-i386.
yum is completely broken. I cannot install or update any software. yum is always throwing:
Code: Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/mirrorlist?repo=free-fedora-12&arch=x86_64 error was 14: PYCURL ERROR 7 - "" Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: rpmfusion-free. Please verify its path and try again I have tried globally to disable the gpg check as stated in other threads. I have no proxies or such in yum.conf or in my bashrc. If I manually click on the link it will resolve in firefox so I am sure it is not my net connection per se, it seems yum or curl is adding a : to the end of the url thats why it wont resolve properly.
I have done a yum clean all , which didnt really help either. reinstalling the rpmfusion repos isnt an option either as I start getting curl errors in the terminal. I am really at a loss here and am completely out of ideas as I cant install any updates or software , at first I thought the repositories were having problems with the holidays but this has been going on for 4 days now. /var/log/messages isnt showing anything either.
I know that there have been a lot of messages (with repo correction info posted) for yum updates after install; but I'm trying to do an internet install of F11 and I'm getting the same message. Obviously I can't change a yum.conf file for this -- but it does give one the option to edit the location.
The default location is: [URL].. There's one other big flaw with the internet install -- it writes HD partition changes to the disk right after you set up the partition scheme; shouldn't it wait until it knows it can connect to the repository?? I had to boot to a Ubuntu live dvd to get on here to post this. I'm definitely not saving time using the internet install option.
I got online last night and found some of the info. on the yum updates issue, with different mirrors or repositores. So what I tried changing for the default repo / metadata location, using the edit option is:
I changed the word metalink to mirrorlist. I changed https to http. I tried using http://mirror.liberty.edu/pub (etc) which is actually an rpm fusion mirror. I likewise tried http://mirrors.cat.pdx.edu (etc.) I gave up and went to bed, and this morning I just tried the http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/ (and I also tried the above redhat.com address substituting i386 for basearch and 11 for $releasever) -- no go with any of that. Same error message about cannot retrieve installer metadata.
All of the other messages I've seen on this issue have been about Yum updates; not installs. Hopefully the install DVD will show up in the next couple of hours; but I'd like to make this work if I can ??
I recently registered a Red Hat 5 machine. It registered ok and was able to do a yum update. Now, yum update gives this error:
Loaded plugins: rhnplugin, security There was an error communicating with RHN. RHN support will be disabled. Error communicating with server. The message was:
Temporary failure in name resolution Could not retrieve mirrorlist <red hat mirror url here>error was [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-3, 'Temporary failure in name resolution')> [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-3, 'Temporary failure in name resolution')> Trying other mirror.
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: rpmforge. Please verify its path and try again I can ssh into the machine, and I can open up Firefox and browse the web. I have another Red Hat 5 machine set up and working fine, and I've checked that the /etc/yum.conf, /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date, .bash_profile, and /etc/hosts files are all the same (except for hostnames and ip addresses). I'm fairly new to Red Hat, and I don't know what other configuration files to check.
when i was trying to install perl with fedora using yum: # yum install perl i got the following error: Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again
