Ubuntu :: Gdm Using Incorrect Desktop Icons Folder / Correct This?

Feb 23, 2010

I mistakenly moved the /home/user/Desktop file to another location so now when my desktop starts it used the entire contents of my /home/user/ directory (except for the hidden contents) to create icons all over my desktop.
I have restored the Desktop folder to the correct location but it ignores it now and continues to show every file under /home/user as an icon.

How do I reset it to point to the original Desktop folder?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Volume Range Incorrect / Correct It?

Jul 29, 2010

I spent hours and hours digging through this thread, and other random ones, where everything succeeds. I have an onboard Intel ICH6. Its details are located at: http://alsa-project.org/main/index.p...x:Vendor-Intel (btw, the part of about going and finding your chipset from a dropdown and the green text is a broken link. I think it should point here, instead: http://alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Main).

My resolution ended up being, in the sound preferences, to change the Connector under Output from "Analog Output/Amplifier" to "Analog Mono Output/Amplifier" (No Amplifier works too).

I didn't find this advice anywhere. I was going to give up, and was poking around, and saw the mono options. Since onboard speakers are mono, I gave these choices a try. So, hopefully, this helps someone else. I appreciate this sticky; maybe there should be some information about how to find the appropriate sound settings in the guide ... somewhere in the beginning, around where you should check that your volume is up and your mute is off

This is a quote from sound solutions thread. i had this problem too with ICH6 but now that i have sound i have a new issue. While a normal sound range is 0-100% my sound range is about 0-10% meaning that about if i put my volume on 3% it it as loud as about 30% should be normally.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 And Monitor Detection?

Jul 22, 2010

I opted to blow away my system (no did not save xorg.conf), and do a clean install of 11.3. Not a big deal to blow it away, nothing lost.

Dell Dimension C521, 3GB RAM, Athlon DualCore
OpenSuse 11.3 x64
Nvidia GeForce 6150LE (on mainboard)
Dell 2048FP 24" Monitor, connected via VGA

When doing the install, all appears to go well. I added the "nomodeset" option after the first boot to avoid the graphics issues. KDE comes up and is in 800x600 mode at 50hz. That is the best resolution it will show. All other options in the configure desktop applet are lower. This monitor was driven at 1900x1200 on the same config with 11.2.

[Code]...

In the nVidia-Settings applet (run as root), it shows the display as "CRT-0". 11.2 showed it as a Dell.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Disable Monitor Detection In 11.4?

Mar 11, 2011

I've just upgraded to 11.4 and found myself with the same problem that I posted in Available resolutions vary depending if monitor is on or off when starting the system I'm using this pc as a server, and I acces to it most of the time via VNC, so the monitor is turned off almost all the time. If the pc boots while monitor is on, i have a resolution of 1280, if it's off I get 1024.

In the previous post I fixed this using the option "CustomEDID" in my xorg.conf, but this time I have no xorg.conf file to put this option in, and even if I did, since I'm using the default drivers (Nouveau, i think) instead of Nvidia oficial ones, i have no clue about how to obtain edid.bin. how to fix this without installing the propietary drivers? (since i don't need ant fancy 3d effects, kde seems to work fine and performance is ok)

Ubuntu :: Incorrect Swap Partition Size In System Monitor?

Jun 13, 2010

I am using Kubuntu Amd64 Lucid on my desktop and I have allocated 08.03 GB partition for swap. But today I have noticed that system monitor is showing this as 09.90GB which is incorrect.

I tried deactivating the swap from KDE Partition manager. Even after deactivating swap it still shows the swap as 1.9 GB. So there is clearly 1.9 GB swap added to my system. I am not sure how. Attached screen shot clearly shows the system monitor issue. One possibility is, I have 4 GB (3.7 asper system) RAM comprising two units of 2 GB cards. Is this 1.9 GB read from one of these? I tried to boot the system from Kubuntu AMD64 live CD and then it showed only 8 GB as expected. So not sure whats causing this issue in my installation.

Ubuntu :: Which Used RAM Monitor Is Correct

Code:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 228 226 2 0 10 86
-/+ buffers/cache: 129 99
Swap: 668 1 667

Then I used top command and got this:
Code:
top - 21:49:36 up 4 min, 2 users, load average: 0.86, 1.02, 0.48
Tasks: 155 total, 1 running, 154 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie

Mem: 234476k total, 224660k used, 9816k free, 11596k buffers
Swap: 685048k total, 2152k used, 682896k free, 82564k cached

Finally I tried the system monitor and it said
Memory:126.6 MiB (55,3%) of 229 MiB
Swap: 2.1 MiB (0.03%) of 669 MiB

Yesterday memory was below 100. so which one is true and which one is lying? System now otherwise works fine. Quite fast actually even with more programs open.

Ubuntu :: Natty Screen Tearing / Incorrect Monitor Refresh Rate

May 3, 2011

I'm currently running an up-to-date copy of Ubuntu 11.04, but I'm noticing some strange behavior with the monitor settings. First of all, I started investigating this because I'm seeing a lot of screen tearing while watching videos full screen as well as while the screensaver (lattice) is running. On Ubuntu 10.10 I was able to simply set the refresh rate of my monitor to 60Hz through the Nvidia tool and everything worked great. Now, this is no longer the case. I'm using a Samsung Syncmaster 205BW monitor with an Nvidia 8600 GT video card. They are connected with a DVI cable.The strange thing is, the default tool, Monitors, claims my monitor is "unknown" and will only allow me to select 50Hz, 51Hz, and sometimes 52Hz for the refresh rate.

The Nvidia tool claims that my monitor has been detected as a Samsung Syncmaster and is configured to run at 60Hz.However, another area of the Nvidia tool claims that my monitor is using a refresh rate of 59.95Hz. none of these solutions had any effect. I'm still seeing video tearing. I let the Nvidia tool re-write my xorg.conf file after trying these solutions.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: New Monitor - X Will Not Keep Correct Resolution On Restart

May 29, 2010

I've just bought a new monitor - Viewsonic VA2213w and am trying to set it up with Lucid. The resolution required is 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. I have an NVidia GTS250 with the proprietary driver v195.36.24 installed. I can set the right resolution in the nvidia-settings app, but it will not survive a restart. X always reverts to 1024x768. I have manually edited xorg.conf now to try to force the mode. The GDM login screen displays at the correct resolution, but on logging in X changes the resolution. Xorg.0.log shows the resolution being correctly set to 1920x1080 initially, then right at the end for some reason it is reset to 1024x768.

From what I have read, this is a brand new chipset with the GPU built into the main CPU, as if it were another CPU core. Is there a driver for this yet, or do I have to deal with an improper resolution?

General :: Monitor Resolution Was Correct But Not Anymore

Jun 11, 2010

About three weeks ago I bought a new PC and installed Debian Squeeze. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 2494hs monitor connected to it. Until about an hour ago the monitor resolution was 1920x1080 and there were no problems. Anytime I clicked on system -> preferences -> monitors, the monitor preferences displayed the monitor name (Samsung whatever) as well as the resolution (1920x1080). An hour ago I did my normal daily upgrade via synaptic (synaptic -> mark all upgrades -> apply). When the upgrade were finished, the system indicated that a restart was required, so I restarted.

After the reboot, my monitor's resolution is set at 1152x864. System -> preferences -> monitors shows the monitor name as unknown and the max resolution available is 1360x768. Xrandr shows the max available resolution as 1360x1360, which is obviously wrong. According to discover I have an ATI graphics card. I've also run ddcprobebut that outputs about 15 lines and then stops with edidfail. I do not have an xorg.conf on my system or, if I do have one, it is not in /etc/X11.

Hardware :: Not Correct Refresh Rate On External Monitor

Jun 17, 2010

I'm using Arch Linux and I just bought a ViewSonic P227f CRT monitor for photo editing, and while it works pretty well after just plugging it in, it seems that the refresh rates are a bit off.The monitor is supposed to be able to do 1920x1440 @ 84hz, but I can only select 75hz in Gnome's monitor settings. The monitor is also supposed to be able to display 2048x1536@74hz, but I can't even select that resolution. There's just a garbled image at that resolution. I'm using it on a laptop with an Intel X3100 GPU. Is that why I can't use the highest resolution? Or is it because of incorrect modelines?The monitor is identified in Gnome's monitor settings as 'ViewSonic Corporation 20"', which is also wrong since it's a 21" monitor.

I was able to locate the correct HorizSync and VertRefresh values in this post on the Ubuntu forums.
HorizSync: 30-130
VertRefresh: 50-160

From what I gather the max pixel clock is 340mhz.I tried making an xorg.conf that specified the hsync and vrefresh but it didn't make any difference. I also tried adding a new modeline to xrandr using a modeline calculator. But I couldn't really figure out how it worked. The calculator said that the "Dot clock" was over the max frequency and that I should use an interlacing mode.Now, if there was a tool similar to Ubuntu's displayconf-gtk I imagine I could just set the correct model and be done with it. But since that is pretty much dead in favor of xrandr (i guess?) and doesn't exist for Arch anyway I think, is there a way to specify the correct model using xrandr?

Fedora Hardware :: Compaq W17Q Monitor - Correct Resolution Not Available

Feb 18, 2010

I have two displays: my main being an Apple Cinema Display (1920x1200), and my secondary being a Compaq W17q (1440x900). Previously all applications saw the secondary fine, being able to detect its name, native resolution, refresh rate, and so forth. But today, for no reason, after going into nvidia-settings the display is now being called "CRT-0" with only 4:3 resolutions available (1024x768 being the highest).

So now I'm stuck with the wrong resolution on my second monitor. All I can guess is that something more integral in Fedora is no longer able to read the EDID in it or something (I say integral as it's not just nvidia-settings, its everything, not to mention my install of Win 7 still reads the display A-OK)? Maybe I could just force the 1440x900 resolution? If so, how? Everything I've tried so far has either had no effect or resulted in glitch city.

In System Monitor, on the File Systems tab, the "Total", "Available" and "Used" columns don't seem to add up, and the "Used" percentage doesn't seem correct either.

/dev/sdb1 = 50 GB FAT32 partition of an external 500 GB USB hard disk.
/dev/sdb2 = remainder of the 500 GB USB hard disk encrypted using luks.

Screenshot: The /dev/sda1 figures don't really add up well, but they're close at least (how you get "50% Used" from any of those figures I don't know!).

However, for /dev/sdb2, they're miles off:
"Free" = 146.2 GiB
"Total" = 409.7 GiB
"Available" = 125.4 GiB
"Used" = 263.5 GiB
