Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Record BOTH MIC & MP3

Feb 8, 2010

All I can record in my computer using The Sound Recorder in Jaunty is 1. It's either MIC or an MP3. You have to turn off one to keep the other and vice versa. How do you record both?

PS I did some homework and they said I need to install a mixer. But I've tried alsamixer, gnome-alsamixer, kmix, jack, they don't the mixers that I need.

PPS I'm recording from Sound Recorder and gtk-recordmydesktop.

Ubuntu :: No Off-The-Record (OTR) Support?

Jun 10, 2010

I noticed lately the main chat client inserted in the new versions of Ubuntu is Empathy, rather nice, and I saw some very nice integrations in gnome-shell. Only one problem with it, no Off-The-Record (OTR) support, and no interest in implementing it. I am not sure how many of you out there are using it (OTR), but I basically love it, and I feel more safe when I use it. I like Empathy very much, but I do not understand the lack of interested of the developers for implementing such a great feature.

I have made this article, because I just want to do my part, as others did in filing bug reports, and making complaints to introduce this great feature to Empathy. If you want this feature in Empathy there are some places where you can make your voice heard: [URL]...

I know it says there they started to work on it in 2009, but after that no sign of development, basically for me it was just something to calm people down, and make them stop asking for this feature.I did not like the forced removal of pidgin, and the "you can use it, but we are not support it" excuse, but I learned to live with it, and adapt. I admit I am unable to code an otr plugin for Empathy or I would,

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Record Sound At All In 9.10 ?

May 26, 2010

I just upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04, then rapidly to 9.10, when support for 8.10 was finally phased out. I've been trying for a few days to figure out how to record sound and can't get anything working. Sound playback works fine.

Here's what I've tried so far:

Code:

The terminal programs execute and quit after ten seconds, as expected, and create a sound of the appropriate length in my home directory, which is what I want. They don't report any errors, but the sound file they create is just soft background static with occasional soft clicks. Audacity also just records soft static with soft occasional clicks. The Gnome Sound recorder does slightly better, recording almost-intelligible sounds with bad static distortion.

I've verified that sound levels are not muted using the mixer, and have run through the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide [url]. No joy.

Here's the output of lscpi -v:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Microphone Works But Does Not Record?

Jan 31, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on an Asus F3JC laptop with an integrated webcam and microphone. The webcam is a

Code:
user@ubuntu:~$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 05e1:0501 Syntek Semiconductor Co., Ltd DC-1125 WebCam

and it works. If i tap on the microphone or if I blow on it, I hear noises but after I record something with gnome-sound-recorder I don't hear any sound! The same with Skype, for example.

On Xp (other hd partition) it works.

The audio device on the laptop is a

Code:
user@ubuntu:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC660 Analog [ALC660 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1

[Code]....

If I open the "sound preferences tool" the device for sound input is "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" and even if I tune the volume of the microphone I don't see any movement in the input level bar. I've also checked alsamixer and the digital volum in the capture interface is set at the maximum.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 - Record Your Encryption Passphrase

Feb 7, 2010

I installed ubuntu 9.10 to a fresh partition on a HD that already contains a windows xp. During the install I opted to Require my password to login and to decrypt my home folder, (don't ask why, I regret it already). The install went well, I think, but when it came to reboot time I wanted to check that I could start windows xp from the new grub boot loader. Windows started fine so I rebooted again to try my new install of ubuntu. Now the system seems to get stuck at the little spinning wheel icon. I tried to boot to recovery shell but after entering my name and password I get:
Unable to cd to '/home/myname'

I rebooted using live cd. And mounted the file system as root. Now I have chroot ed into the system but that's as far as my knowledge gets me. I have googled to find the next step but am not finding a clear answer. I have found this [URL]. And here I see I should have seen a screen entitled: Record your encryption passphrase. But I didn't get to that screen. So is there any elegant solution? or am I destined to wipe the install and start again? Perhaps this problem is connected to the bug mentioned here [URL]. Optional encrypted partitions must be marked bootwait in /etc/fstab

In addition to the above, users who have configured any encrypted partitions in /etc/crypttab to start at boot time (i.e., not using the noauto option) should make sure that the filesystems on these volumes are listed in /etc/fstab if they are not mounted at a standard system mountpoint. Failure to do this on a desktop system will lead to problems from the X server and cryptsetup trying to control the console at the same time. At best, this will prevent the user from seeing the passphrase prompt; at worst it will also cause the X server to spin and consume 100% CPU. (430496)

I'm not sure, my /home is not on a separate partition.
/etc/crypttab is empty
# <target name> <source device> <key file> <options>
/etc/fstab is
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
