I know JohnVV. "Install a supported version of Fedora, like Fedora 11". This is on a box that has all 11 releases of Fedora installed. It's a toy and I like to play around with it.
I was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.
Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).
I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?
I installed squid cache on my ubuntu server 10.10 and it is work fine but i want to know how to make it cache all files like .exe .mp3 .avi ....etc. and the other thing i want to know is how to make my client take the files from the cache in the full speed. since am using mikrotik system to use pppoe for clients and i match it with my ubuntu squid

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just installed 11.04 on an eeePC B602 connected to my LG TV over HDMI
All runs fine, except the video is at the wrong aspect ratio. (this results in everything looking too fat!
Running the Preferences->Monitor utility shows that I have 1024x768 resolution selected at 75Hz (good!, as that is what the TV manual recommends), but it says that the aspect ratio is 4:3, but I want 16:8
Running xrandr gives:
Interesting, the physical dimensions reported 828mm x 620mm which is 4:3, but I want 694x393mm (I measured it with a ruler), which is 16:9
The card is a Radeon HD3400 series
So, what do I do next, in the good-old-days, you could just edit xorg.conf, but it seems that this no longer exists.
I am guessing that there is an xrandr command to change it, but after reading the man page for a while and playing around, could not get it to work.
I need my xorg in 9.10 to be in 5:4 ratio for it to display properly. Does any one know how I can do this. Can not update to 10.04 because I get frozen screen with activity indicator stuck in upper left corner. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a hdtv as a monitor hooked up to my desktop and this monitor is set to 1024X768 4:3. My monitor is suppose to be originally set 1024X768 16:9. In the nvidia X settings is not listed. So how can I change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9? My graphics card is: nvidia FX 5200 128MB (Ubuntu 10.04).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a weird problem, which I suspect may have something to do with Ubuntu 10.10.
A while ago I started using a program called Imagination to create DVD slide shows, and Bombono to add menus etc. to the output from Imagination. Both programs worked like a dream. The weird part is, a test video I created using Imagination on 6/12/2010 can be imported into Bombono without any trouble. However, a new slide show I created today, cannot be imported - I get an error message from Bombono saying that the aspect ratio is 5:4, and not 4:3 or 16:9.
The only thing that has happened between 6/12/2010 and today (17/12/2010), is a routine Ubuntu 10.10 update. Does anyone know whether it is possible that a file needed by either Imagination or Bombono (or both) may have been changed by the update?
I want Smplayer to display all videos in 16:9 aspect ratio.
I searched at google & found a solution here [URL]
Its working, with Gnome Mplayer but not with Smplayer.
Smplayer still displays all videos in their default ARs.
Suppose I arrange multiple videos in Smplayer's playlist I need to get up from my seat & change the AR, every time a new track starts playing. This is really tiresome.
I just installed Kubuntu 10.10 on my Inspiron 1011, working great except it will not save my aspect ratio settings, I have it plugged into a 19 inch monitor, I have set the monitor at 1440X900 and disabled the built in monitor, but no matter how many times I correct it, when I log in both displays are on and set to 800X600. How do I make the settings stick?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just got hold of a Trust 200 graphics tablet which has an aspect ratio of 4:3. My laptop screen is wider than this and when I have an external monitor plugged in my desktop is wider still. Is there a way to get the tablet to work with the correct aspect ratio? For instance is it possible in x.org to restrict the coordinates it can work within to those of my external 4:3 monitor?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly new to Fedora. I am using F14, on a brand new laptop. The LCD screen needs to be matched with a 16:9 ratio, or it stretches everything out. Unfortunately F14 only comes offering three options... none of which are 16:9. Is there an easy way for me to add a 16:9 ratio to my display settings? Does it matter that I am running in low graphics mode?..... it's the only way the liveCd would install.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy laptop (which is without screen) supports the following resolutions: 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and also few other standard resolutions, but it doesn't support 800x480. I am using the laptop as a carputer and Xenarc 700TSV touchscreen as screen, which is of 16:9 ratio and the native resolution is 800x480.
Now the problem is my old laptop doesn't support 800x480 and It is not possible to upgrade the graphics card. The closest resolution supported by the laptop is 800x600 but the output is horizontally stretched. Is it possible to vertically stretched the desktop resolution so that when I use 800x600, it actually displays 800x480 pixels after vertical scaling? And when I see this 800x600 output in my Xenarc 7 inch screen, output is horizontally stretched and aspect ratio becomes 1:1 ?
I have a friend who runs Ubuntu 9.10 on a laptop that has a 16:9 screen (1366x768) and an Intel 4500m GPU. I'm trying to figure out how to get 4:3 resolutions to display in their proper aspect ratio (black bars on either side of the image), rather than stretching to fill the whole screen. This is mostly for playing older games in fullscreen. I've tried messing with xorg.conf and xrandr a bit, but I didn't have much luck.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a video edited in Pitivi. The source files were recorded from a VHS tape, so it's NTSC size (720x480).
Problem is that when I render it the output looks stretched vertically. When I play it in Totem Movie Player, the aspect ratio option can be changed from "Auto" to "4:3 TV" and then it looks correct.
How can I render the output file with a different aspect ratio?
I tried going into Project Settings and adjusting the Video Output height and width, but this doesn't change the aspect ratio. Also tried PAL and VGA instead of NTSC. What should I try next?
Using the version of Pitivi that comes with a fresh install of 10.04 LTS.
I am trying to get video output with mplayer on a 64 bit hp laptop running the radeonhd driver. I feel in need of a little config magic. It throws up a square box in the middle of the 1200x800 screen. My config file simply says:
xy-3:2
utf8=yes
dec@harriet:$ mplayer dvd://2 - The video bit says
MPEG-PS file format detected.
VIDEO: MPEG2 720x576 (aspect 3) 25.000 fps 9800.0 kbps (1225.0 kbyte/s)
[code].....
mplayer -vf spp, scale also gets laughed at. There is also some conflict because the agp aperature is over 4 gigs and the bios/kernel recreate one at 2 gigs. This is a lousy video combination (ATI card under linux - 'nuff said).
I'm looking for a graphics editor which will convert/resize the aspect ratio of the anamorphic images I create in-camera to their appropriate size. I'm shooting my images on film and digital. My digital camera is a Sony H50 with native 4:3 format. I'm also shooting with a Hasselblad EL/M with the standard 6x6 format.
Using my 2x anamorphic head on either camera will produce the following results: Sony H50: 4:3 > 2.66:1 (8:3) Hasselblad EL/M: 6x6 > 12x6. We're easily talking about 48"x24" or 60"x30" prints here folks! So I need to know which programs in Linux will give me the results I'm looking for.
I just finish installing 11.3. Everything works perfectly expect few issues with my display setting. I've installed SUSE on my laptop Acer Aspire 5920G and I got Samsng 226BW as my second display. How can I change the resolution of my Samsung display to 1680*1050? currently set as 1024*768 and I can't change it. Do I need to update my NVIDIA driver? if so how can I do that? finally, If I get this fixed how can I set my Samsung to be the main display?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Ubuntu server running behind a router and I generally manage it from a remote location. I ran into a problem today when I changed the subdomain that the router is on and in turn changed all of the ip addresses for everything on the local network. After restarting the router, I can no longer access the Ubuntu server.
I made sure that I changed the port forwarding settings to reflect the changes in ip addresses. Also the router does not even show the Ubuntu server as having an ip address issued to it. So from that I guess that the server never requested for a new ip after the router restarted. I think I've had this problem before and I ended up restarting the entire server manually. I know that if I restart it, everything should be back to normal. That's what I'll have to end up doing, but I wanted to avoid having this problem in the future, so I was wondering if there is any way to set up the server so that it requests for a new ip address automatically.
I am running UBUNTU / Windows Dual Boot on a HP Pavillion computer. My problem is that on the windows side I have lost sound and internet ( Via Ethernet ). Everything works fine in UBUNTU. So I guess I need to reinstall Ethernet and Sound drivers. Problem is how do I establish what drivers I need - Ethernet card , and Sound card.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy first installation of RedHat was in 1996 , version 3, then I switched to Mandrake because they supported the hardware I had at that time. Now I am a little worried about the direction Mandriva has taken lately so need to reconsider RedHat. I was hoping to buy the distribution on a disk medium but the main site seems to be addressed to the business community not home users like me. Downloading is not attractive so I wondered if it was possible to buy a boxed set of Fedora or RedHat for a home user.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a home WiFi network that has been working fine for ages, which currently supports two Windows-based laptops and a WM5 smartphone. They all connect to the WiFi router (Linksys WRT54G) which in turn connects to the ADSL modem (Huawei MT882). The router is configured with a WEP key, the SSID is not being broadcast, and all MAC addresses must be whitelisted. I try to follow good wireless network security practice. I also have NAT running between the router and the modem.
Everything is working fine for the Windows clients, and now I am trying to add my Linux box to the mix. I am setting up an older HP Pavilion 510a desktop with Ubuntu v8.04LTS, using a Realtek RTL8185 WLAN card. The machine has an onboard RTL8139 LAN adaptor also, which works fine when I plug it in directly to an ethernet port on the wireless router. The WLAN, however, does not seem to be getting a DHCP packet, and keeps on autoconfiguring with a 169.254.x.x address. When I try giving it a static IP address it doesn't connect either.
As you can see from the screenshots below, the WLAN is working fine. I have it installed using the ndiswrapper and Windows drivers. I've been through the Comprehensive ndiswrapper troubleshooting guide but that did not resolve my problem.
I configured the network myself, and it works perfectly for my Windows machines. It is just my lack of experience with Linux which is preventing me from getting the wireless to work under Linux. I can get a HDCP packet in Linux when I am connected to the LAN using the RTL8139 adaptor, but not on the WLAN using the RTL8185 adaptor.
I just got a AWUS036H Alfa Network Adapter but there's like 10 folders on teh CD that it comes with, and there's read me's in about all 10 of'em, i have no damn idea which one to install. I went ahead and just did ifconfig wlan1 up and brought the interface up, went to wicd network manager and added wlan1 to wireless adapter
when i try connecting to my wireless router, it says resetting Ip ddress, something else with the configuration file, then obtaining IP address... it just hangs there for about 2-3 minutes and gives me an error... anyone else know how to set up this adapter?
Where can i obtain a full command list?

I gave my CD away that I got free from shipit and they wont let me get a new one. I have an external HD formatted to NTFS with files on it that I can't lose, they are very important. I might buy a disk later but right now my funds are tight due to bills and such. I use Ubuntu more than Windows, actually Windows is pretty much never used on this machine and due to issues with it I am unable to use it.
