Jul 7, 2010
i have one big pdf file that i made from 272 Photos. Heard that djvu format is better at compression than pdf. But have no clue how to use it. I have in synaptic installed pdf2djvu package, and it is in /usr/bin, but have no idea how to use it

There are quite a few threads in this forum on how to convert a DJVU file into a PDF (among which this thread the instruction of which I followed.) I converted a DJVU file by printing it to a PS file from the Document Viewer. Then I printed again the PS to file into a PDF from that same application. The second phase took more than 24 hours and resulted in a scanned PDF of less than 500 pages with a size of 315 MB! I have many books of more pages which come down to 1 MB only. What happened in the process to make it so damn slow and so inefficient? Is there a good alternative (not ps2pdf because it provides the same result)?

What happens is that I like the djvu format (a lot!), and I'd like to export all my pdf books (I'm studying the university and I have a lot of pdf books) to djvu format.The problem is that I found very uncomfortable to read a djvu book (with hundreds of pages) without the help of bookmarks or index.I have found some djvu files with bookmarks and that's why I believe that there is a way to do this.I found an application called djvubookmarker on sourceforge.net , but this application only works on Windows OS (and doesn't work really good, it has some bugs) so I haven't used wine to use this application with my Ubuntu.

I've downloaded some files from the Internet Archive. They come in different file formats and most of the time I use pdf. However, sometimes the scans are saves in colour instead of b/w. This makes it difficult/impossible to read on a dedicated ebook reader. In that case I downloaded the djvu files as on the PC you can select which layer (color, bw,fore,back) one would like to see. Selecting the bw gives excellent results. However, the ebook reader does not has this option.
The question is, how can I remove /extract a layer from the djvu file and save only this layer.
So far I've tried the following two approaches:
1) select bw in the djvu viewer on the PC and printed to postscript file. Followed by a ps2pdf conversion. This works, but generates a fairly large pdf file. Sure, I can again upload it to any2djvu but it just seems to much manual work for each file.
2) I tried the shared annotation feature and said (mode bw). This works on the PC as desired but is ignored on the ebook reader as the other layers are still present.

An easy way to convert wav files into mp3 (or ogg).
$ sudo-apt-get install nautilus-script-audio-convert mpg321 vorbis-tools lame nautilus-script-manager.
after that run
$ nautilus-script-manager enable ConvertAudioFile
Now, when you right click on audio file, under 'scripts', you will see ConvertAudioFile option.

I have Ubuntu 9.04 and just installed Sound Converter. I am trying to convert a bunch of .ogg files to mp3 to play on my iPod and it's not working so well. In the Sound Converter options I have is set to convert to high quality mp3. I choose the folder that the files are in and after a moment (slow laptop) Sound Converter populates, I hit 'convert' and it shows that the conversion completes in two seconds. All that it did was create the new folder structure of artist/album but there is nothing in there. Not sure what I am missing. I used Sound Converter before and it worked fine.

I have a lot of .flac files downloaded from several sites. Most of them come with a .cue file, and the .jpg with the cover, etc. It seems it is the intention of the uploader that one rebuilds the original CDDA. However, if I had a stand-alone CD/DVD player with flac I would hardly see the point of converting the flac to cdda. Furthermore, I could even play the flacs with a software player although, in this case, the audio quality would not be so good due to the noise picked up by the signal from the PC digital circuits.

I just realized I should have posted this in the multimedia forum. I tried to delete it, but did not find an option for that under edit. Hi there - I'm trying to convert an avi file into an ISO that I can burn to DVD. I found a page that gave really good, step by step instructions, on this site:[URL].. But things did not go quite according to plan. When I tried the first step, it said couldn't find any package whose name or description matched "lame-extras". I then got the following output, followed by all the installation stuff:
The following NEW packages will be installed: dvdauthor ffmpeg lame libavdevice52{a} libavfilter0{a} liblzo2-2{a} libmp3lame0{a} libsvga1{a} libxvidcore4{a} mencoder mplayer{a} 0 packages upgraded, 11 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.
Undaunted, I plowed ahead (what's the worst that could happen?), and went through with the rest of the steps. Finally, I created the dir to do the conversion, cd'ed into it, and ran the script, as instructed, and got the following (the file that I was using was an episode of Entourage, just as a test, as it was the shortest avi file I had):
[Code]...

I'm finally upgrading my 1GB RAM P3-800 fileserver by replacing the motherboard, CPU, and RAM in the otherwise good case. I'm moving to a quad-core AMD-64 CPU and 16GB RAM, and so I figured it'd be worthwhile to switch over to a 64-bit system at the same time (though it'll probably be a little faster either way, which has almost nothing to do with the CPU). But I hate having to reconfigure everything manually.
I did some searches, and there are several threads that say "no, you can't just convert". But why not? This isn't a desktop system, so I don't care about junk like Flash and the latest nVidia drivers. I'm essentially just replacing libc, programs linked against libc, and the kernel. Shouldn't this just be a matter of reinstalling all of the existing packages - which is very much the same thing as changing the distro version? What super mega secret complexity of "larger integers" am I missing?

I have a desktop PC running Ubuntu 9.04. It has an AMD Athlon 3000 processor and 2G of RAM with two HDDs, one 450G, the other 110G. All my data on the desktop is backed up on the 2nd disk, together with data from 3 laptops. My plan is to use the desktop as a file and print server for the other machines and in the process free up some work space on my desk as I'll no longer need the screen and keyboard for the desktop.
So, I think, all I have to do is download the 32bit version of Ubuntu 9.10 Server Edition and install it on the desktop. Then I'll be able to access the backed-up data on the 2nd drive, and have an in-house web server as well. I will be able to administer the new server from one of the other machines, hence the free desk space.

I am sitting on over a hundred Disney and other kid's VHS tapes we still have around from when our kids were little. My granddaughter has found them and finds them fantastically entertaining but VHS isn't exactly hardy for a 4 year old to handle. I'm looking to convert them to DVD for both backup and space savings. Cinderella has already bit the dust and I'm paying dearly for it. I have done some research and every bit of information assumes that I would have an idea of what I'm doing.
I do own a DVR but most of them won't copy for copy protect reasons. As far as I can tell the only way I can convert them is by going from analog VHS to digital DVD. Now, I have no clue how to do this nor what hardware I would need if any to do this.

i have alot of images that need to be printed into a pdf.
i am not aware of any software that allows me to do this. and searching on the web is bringing to to alot of propitiatory garbage.
aside from openoffice, what alternatives do i have?
i do not prefer open office because it doesn't let me utilize the whole page smack-off-the-bat.
if it pasted images to the size they were meant to be (the whole page) it would be good enough for me (but its not ) the images need to be in a particular order.

I'm trying to make a copy of my Blu-Ray movies on DVD-R so I can play them on my DVD player. The movies have been ripped to my HDD and the HD audio extracted. So I'm left with one video stream and one audio stream (either DTS or AC3) in a single m2ts file. I've tried to use mencoder with the same command that I use to convert DVB HD broadcasts to DVD compliant mpeg files as so:
Code:
mencoder -oac copy -ovc lavc -of mpeg -mpegopts format=dvd:tsaf -vf scale=720:576,harddup -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:vrc_buf_size=1835:vrc_maxrate=9800:vbitrate=4500:keyint=15:vstrict=0:aspect=16/9 -ofps 25 -o newfile.mpg 00520.m2ts
[Code]...
Is there something wrong with my mencoder command, or is there perhaps a better way of attacking this. I've spent a fair bit of time looking for a solution to this and there seems to very little information around. I would have thought this would be quite a common thing to try and do?
