Ubuntu :: How To Measure Temp In UNE 10.04 Since Panel Locked
Jun 14, 2010
Any good ideas for a GUI program that monitors temp for CPU and hard drive? I'd prefer one that is like a system monitor that can show trends on a graph (like CPU usage, etc). It is irritating that you can't even add a silly app to the panel because UNE is locked (ERR, Ubuntu, what were you thinking? Give US the choice! Rant over) So far, I have just written a quick script after installing lm-sensors and hddtemp and run the necessary setup routines that will show me, but I would like some of the history data.
Code:
#! /bin/bash
# zenity --info --title "Temp INFO" --text "sensors"

Bizarrest thing after swapping in my HDD from an old laptop into a new one. My LXDE panel temperature display is showing "-273," AKA absolute zero in celcius. I've done a bit of googling for lxde temp sensor, and most of the discussions I saw referred to installing lm-sensors, which apparently I did not yet have, although on my old laptop the temperature was shown correctly. I believe the automatic sensor location is off and I need to give it the correct location manually. I am unsure of how to do that, and it makes sense that it's hardware specific. After installing lm-sensors, I saw that sensors-detect provides me with a list of the correct temp sensors in my computer, but I'm unsure how to save those results so the computer can use them.

Just installed latest ubuntu netbook remix (for my eeepc).I can't customise the desktop the way I like it. On Debian I used to drag/drop the top panel and place it to the right. With this install the top panel is locked on top, gconf 'locked' checkbox is unlocked.Is this a bug or a feature? can we work around.

I followed some badly-spelled online instructions to get rid of the last panel (because I'm using Avant Window Navigator instead), which had me do this: Ok some people realize that the gnome panel in ubuntu is very annoying and if your like me you dont want it there anymore, so you wnat to get rid of it (only suggested if you have something like AWN ), ok first push alt+f2, then in that type gconf-editor inside of it. Now in that a box should apear. Click on apps, thenGnome, then session, then required sessions. Then there should be a file called gnome -panel right click it then choose edit, then make it empty. then save it press ctrl+alt+delete, then it should not be there but if it is run killallgnome-panel, and to run it again type in gnome-panel. I did it, and now I cannot startup. ( I just get a 'busy' cursor on a blank screen.)

I am starting this thread to get other folks opinions regarding gnome-panel and and Ubuntu Netbook Edition. This post is follows on from here: [URL] I cannot believe that the gnome-panel is now locked down in the Netbook Edition. I have read (via google) many ways to "fix" this issue but I am particularly disappointed with the situation. I use the Netbook Edition on an eeepc 1000. The first thing I do after installing is uninstall maximus, remove the Window Picker applet, and replace them with gnome-globalmenu and dockbarx. This gives me a pretty awesome experience that allows me to combat the low vertical resolution.
After reading this: [URL] I am even more disappointed. If gnome-panel is buggy and you don't have time to fix the issue prior to the release then why are we "swapping" bugs? This is total regression and calling it a 'design decision' does not change that fact one bit. What's next?.. Trash won't empty... we'll say its by design --- All nautilus windows are read only... Don't worry its deliberate, but GIMP is working! --- firefox burns your freaking house down while screwing your wife... (you get my point?)

I've installed the Xfce spin of Fedora 14 (64). The Panel (or main task bar) has several icons by default and as most people. I like to add/remove and move the different items and shortcuts. I can add and remove, however moving items I cannot. When I right-click and select 'Move', the Panel turns gray, in fact it's completely grayed out, like locked. For info, it was absolutely fine in F13.

I have a web server whos DocumentRoot is:/tmp/wwwNow, /temp/www/fake/ is a directory that contains a series of other files/folders.What I want to do is access the files in /temp/www/fake as if they were in the root directory (/temp/www/)For example:
could either be located in "/temp/www/test.php"
-or-
located in "/temp/www/fake/test.php"
so "http://127.0.0.1/test.php" would essentially call both directories. Is this possible? Whould I do this through apache or through the actual file system somehow? (Like some sort of symbolic link?) I would love to hear your input.

I want to measure how much Internet I use on a day-to-day basis. I don't mean how much time I spend on the Internet. I mean volume of data; i.e. how many Mb of data I download and upload, including everything: surfing, on-line backups, emails, IM, VOIP, updates, streaming, and so forth. I don't need this broken down by type (though it would be nice); I just need totals per 24 hour periods. How can I get these statistics? Do I need to install a special program?

how do you measure performance on a computer?I know there are benchmark sites, they do give a general guidance in selection. However, I want to learn how to build a cluster from commodity parts and want to make sure it is equivalent to a specific server in performance.I know clustering is a bit abstract and it will be difficult to measure direct performance and compare it to one specific board. I am fine with that

Any command line tool to measure the network speed between my two linux servers without taking disk speed into account? My network is supposed to be 100Mb, but it doesn't feel like that so I wonder where the bottleneck is. The numbers that I see doesn't correlate well to that. So I'd like to know the speed network card to network card.

Lately, my internet connection stops for several minutes and then re-connects. Since there are few issues to debug here (router, modem, ADSL, internet provider), I would like first to measure the failure rate. Is there a utility or script that will do the following: Wake every 1-2 minutes, verify a certain web page is available (doesn't matter which). If it fails: dump a line to a log file and get back to sleep. If OK - get back to sleep. Is there such a utility?

I want to measure the startup time of any GUI app (e.g. firefox) using the time(1) command. However, timing is measured until the app is closed, which has to be done manually by exiting it or clicking X.
How can I get the app to load, terminate immediately and give me the startup time?

I have debian sarge distro installed on CF instead of HDD. The problem is once in couple of months, my machine crashes showing IO errors. There is no option to replace CF with a HDD.
Is there any way I can measure the life of a CF card? I mean what parameters do you use to specify the life of a CF card (number of R/Ws etc)? and, how can I measure those parameters?

Any good way to measure USB drive speed in a repeatable and effective way? I know that what I "copy" and how I "copy" and the filesystem in use make a difference in anything I try to measure. I know that I can:choose some file or folder tree use various tools (cp, tar, rsync, etc) to move the data use time command to collect details do this more than once.
One "benchmark" I've used in the past was to create a source tree for some application and use make clean; time make in that tree. Lots of I/O of various sorts and some computation and very repeatable. Since I'm not seeking a gold standard benchmark, I can do what I like, but I'd like to do something (a)meaningful in general for myself and others, and (b)avoid inventing what probably already exists.

I have a proxy/gateway server with X routable addresses and X clients, each connecting to his corresponding address from my server. All clients have public static IP's. I need something like the output of 'pktstat -1 -w 10 -B -i eth0 -n -P -t -T' but that would indicate the biggest'traffic hogs' from my clients.
Something like:
67.78.89.90 <-> my.public.ip.1 1344KB/s up 289KB/s down
56.67.78.89 <-> my.public.ip.2 1203KB/s up 200KB/s down
With this output, I can limit the traffic passing thru my server using a bandwidth limiter on my.public.ip.1 and my.public.ip.2. Pktstat only shows the total traffic from-to the respective IP's gathered in a 10second interval (-w 10). I would like something that would indicate the bandwidth per ip more precisely, I don't want to divide the total traffic by 10 (seconds).
Please note that this will go in a cron job. The interactive tools like iftop are useless (I would like something like a text screenshot of iftop from which I could extract the needed information).

I am wondering if there is a tool that measures bandwidth speed right from the shell on CentOS 5.4/5.5.
I am looking for a speed tool rather than go ahead and download a large file and time it sort of advice.
Please let me know if this is available.
P.S. It is to measure the internet speed from the ISP and not the LAN speed.
