Ubuntu :: Freezes When Reaches Desktop During Boot

Jan 15, 2010

I tried to test Ubuntu on my dekstop, an HP Pavilion a6223w with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 but as soon as the live CD reaches the desktop, it hangs, no errors, and from what I can tell it isn't running on any restricted drivers. Is ubuntu not compatible with my PC or something? Here's my full spec's:

AMD Athlon 64 x2 5200+ 2.6GHZ

ECS Nettle2 Mobo with Nvidia nforce 4 chipset and Nvidia 6150SE integrated graphics

3GBs DDR2 5300 RAM @ 667 mhz

500GB Sata HD 7200rpm

ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro PCIe x16

HP Multimedia Keyboard and Logitech USB Optical Mouse

Realtek Onboard HD Audio

I tested it with the latest version of Ubuntu (9.10)

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Desktop Freezes In Boot Sequence

Sep 1, 2011

I am attempting to boot Ubuntu off of a USB drive. The USB drive was created via the USB creator in the .iso file dowloaded from Ubuntu. But for some reason when I go into my BIOS and boot from the USB drive, it spits out one line of syslinux and copyright information ending in "et al" and then a flashing cursor but doesn't go any further. I would provide a screenshot but that isnt an option at the moment with not being able to get past the first line of booting. Also, I have never used Ubuntu as this is my first attempt at running it and it is obviously not going the best.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Freezes At Boot After Switching Desktop?

Mar 29, 2010

As my inspirations forced me to download Kde desktop on my Fedora12 with default gnome desktop. It took me whole night to get the big download by -

"Yum install @kde-desktop"

It got installed successfully.

What I did after that was -

"switchdesk kde"

...Voila...and strange thing happened. The gnome remained there but all the kde features started getting included in there like koffice, kopete etc . Now I waited for around 3 hrs. but only lower task bar of kde got installed and that too very unstable. So I thought of logging out and starting a new session with kde but It never got logged in again. It froze at boot time with Fedora logo, damn.

I have two kernels installed and configured at boot, one is 2.6.31.X (default) and the other is 2.6.32.X which I installed to get my BCM4312 wireless activated and all the activity being done on this.

Sometimes when I boot, the TV does not receive a signal until the boot stage reaches the KDM. I do not know how to reproduce this exactly.

Ubuntu Installation :: Ubuntu 11.04 With Hp Mini - Won't Boot - Goes To The Desktop Theme Then Freezes With Three Warning Messages

Jun 9, 2011

I have a hp mini 1033cr. Awhile ago I installed ubuntu netbook edition, well I was new to Ubuntu so I clicked upgrade. Well everything was going good and then it restarted. when I came up to the log in page I typed my password and now it won't boot. it goes to the desktop theme but then freezes with three warning messages.

1st could not update ICEauthority file /home/adam/.ICEauthority

2nd There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/libgcond-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)

3rd Nautilus could not create the following required folders: /home/adam/desktop, /home/adam/.nautilus

I have tried a fresh install with a disc I burnt and ran with my external dvd drive. Well guess what it decided to not boot from it. I have also tried several other discs including a windows xp disc. it always boots back to the hard drive.

Ubuntu :: System Freezes At Boot When Package "ubuntu-desktop" Installed / What's Happening?

Sep 14, 2010

I have set up a server with Ubuntu 10.4. It always worked fine with 32-bit inside VMware. But on the production machine with 64-bit, it wasn't working well by now. I could now reliably trace the problem down to the "ubuntu-desktop" package. I have installed it (without the recommends) so all its depends are also installed. But as soon as that package is on the system, it freezes at boot time, on the page where CPU freq modules or AppArmor stuff is started. My server is an Intel Core i7, so it lists 8 CPUs for cpufreq. They're normally all listed in a line on their own, but when the system freezes here, the output is broken already. Sometimes it says that cupsd is started, or "Checking quotas", sometimes it stops after "CPU4", sometimes it prints out the lines "CPU0" to "CPU4", then "CPU7" in the same line followed by "[OK]". The system won't react on anything from then on except a hard reset.

As soon as I remove the package "ubuntu-desktop" (chrooted into the system from the rescue system), the OS on disk boots normally into the GUI logon. No problem at all anymore.

It took me a few days to figure out why it wasn't working. I first suspected quota, then a kernel upgrade. But the system booted well after each change on their own. Just as I installed all the graphical stuff, it stopped booting.

What's happening there? What am I supposed to to now? I need the desktop environment and the machine must be working by Saturday. Although the description of ubuntu-desktop says that I should not uninstall it because it's used for update management, I could now install it to get all its depends, and then immediately uninstall it to make the system boot up again. Is that a good idea? Shouldn't it be working without such hacks?

Software :: Ubuntu 9.10 - Temp Reaches Around 80 To 90 Degrees

Nov 1, 2010

I am using ubuntu karmic kola 9.10. The problem I have been having lately is of overheating of my intel core2duo proc, where the temp reaches around 80-90 degrees and the cpu shuts down after a while and the message from the bios is of thermal trip. Ubuntu :: Gnome-do Freezes Desktop?

Aug 28, 2010

after I installed gnome-do and set it to start at start-up, my computer has started freezing right after gnome-do initiates.what happens is I turn on my laptop and log in, and then when the desktop initiates, gnome-do starts and then immediately the prompt window for the login keyring pops up and then my dekstop environment freezes. I can move my cursor around, but when I click nothing happens and the keyboard is unresponsive. the only option is to hard reboot, but the same thing happens all over again. the curious thing though, is that the notification for connecting to a network is perfectly functional and the system monitor continues to record.

Networking :: Arriving Packet (UDP) Never Reaches Process?

Apr 14, 2010

I don't know if this is related to a problem I have run into and posted elsewhere regarding 2 (or more) ethernet ports. But I encountered this while trying to solve the other problem (which I thought was Linux not setting correct routes for 2 interfaces). As suggested by someone when trying to solve the other problem, I switched to using the same IP address (it's a secondary address) on BOTH interfaces. So thus I have configured 172.30.0.13 on both eth0:1 and eth1:1. I am running the NSD program (an authoritative-only name server) listening on port 53 of 172.30.0.13. Some computers are getting the MAC address of eth0 for their ARP requests. Others are getting the MAC address of eth1 for their ARP requests. So this is determining which ethernet port their DNS queries will arrive on.

Those that send their DNS queries to the eth0 MAC address work fine. The NSD process gets the requests and answers them. The answers get back to where the query was sent from. HOWEVER ... those that send their DNS queries to the eth1 MAC address do not work. Using tcpdump, I see that the queries actually do arrive on the server. Using strace, I see that the NSD process never gets them. There are no iptables in effect.

Any idea why the kernel is deciding to not deliver the DNS query UDP datagram to the NSD process? It sure seems that the kernel just doesn't handle more than 1 ethernet interface (at least in the same subnet) correctly. IMHO, when an ARP request is received on 2 or more different interfaces, it should at least answer on both, each answer with the respective MAC address of that interface. It cannot know, and should not assume, any specific physical topology of the network beyond those interfaces.

Ubuntu :: Unity Desktop Freezes Upon Login

May 6, 2011

So I finally managed to install a copy of Natty on my old laptop, but when I logged in, the desktop was frozen. I could move my mouse, but I couldn't click anything. I didn't know if it had to do with packages not being up to date or something (though I doubt it is) so I ran sudo apt-get update, and then tried to run sudo apt-get upgrade, but I got an error saying "E: Unable to locate package upgrade". Apparently I'm not the first to have this problem. I found a similar question asked at [URL]... login. However, there was no answer. I thought that maybe an Ubuntu-specific forum would have an answer.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Freezes When Launch Certain Applications?

May 26, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. I'm using the Gnome desktop (Ubuntu Classic) instead of Unity.

My problems is, when I launch certain applications, most of the time LibreOffice ones, Ubuntu desktop freezes.

When this happens the desktop becomes unresponsive to the keyboard. However the mouse pointer can still be moved around. Everything on the screen will freeze including panels and their items.

This happens only when an application launches.

I have already set up a shortcut key combination so that Ctrl + Alt + Backspace will perform a session restart. But when the above mentioned problem occurs, shortcut keys do not work (so I can't just do a session restart). So there's nothing to do other than restarting the laptop by holding the power button down.

It's not so old my pc, i have Win 7 Ultimate on it.

Slackware :: COUNT Never Reaches Zero - Algorithm Doesn't Converge

Jun 5, 2010

upgrading my notebook from Slackware 13.0 to 13.1. There are always some tricky things to wrap around when such upgrade times come, but now I think I caught a bug in mkinitrd, if I'm not wrong. mkinitd doesn't return when I run:

[code]...

After some debugging, I found that the routine copy-libs() is stuck in an infinite loop, because the statement "while [ "$COUNT" != "0" ]; do" does hold always (that is, COUNT never reaches zero). This, by its side, happens because the set of libs whose dependencies should be checked against are regenerated integrally after each step, and the algorithm doesn't converge. I could fix the problem adding some code, which removes the libraries found in the iteration "i-1" from the list of files found in the iteration "i". A patch in provided below. This done, I could build my first initrd image for Slack 13.1 and put it to run with kernel 2.6.33.4.

[code]...

Ubuntu :: Desktop Freezes For 30 Secs When SD Card Plugged In

Jan 22, 2010

I am attempting to copy files to a 1GB SD card using my built-in SD card reader on my notebook computer. This function worked great on Hardy Heron. However, I switched to Karmic Koala about a week ago. Upon insertion of the SD card, the entire desktop (including mouse cursor) will freeze for about 30 seconds. Then, the SD card apparently mounts with an icon showing on the desktop. I can then open Nautilus and view the files and folders on the card. When I attempt to copy a file over to the SD card, the transaction looks as though it completes because the file icon shows up. However, Nautilus suddenly unmounts the card. When I check the file, I find that only half or less has copied over the the SD card.

Ubuntu :: Jaunty Live CD Not Booting / Screen Hangs When The Loader Reaches About 10% In The Blue Bar?

It hangs up right on the splash screen and I can view nothing but a blinking cursor on the console screen. The screen hangs when the loader reaches about 10% in the blue bar. No further information can be provided when there is just a blinking cursor at the console. The CPU shows no activity. The CD boots up fine on other computer. How do I go on installing Kubuntu? Is it a good option to use the Ubuntu Server CD and install all the Kubuntu desktop software on it once it is installed (Server edition is not live disk, and I do not have an alternate install CD)?
