I have Ubuntu 10.04 x86 on my laptop. I think I had this problem with older versions, but I can't remember. Needless to say it's been going on for a while. Firefox is set explicitly to go to my home page [URL] when opening, but it frequently (50% or better) instead opens my tabs from my last session.
How can I fix this?
Firefox is sometimes slow opening new tabs/switching between tabs. If I click on the kickoff application launcher button, it takes a few seconds to open, and typing something in the search makes it hang up for about 20 seconds before it does the search. Clicking on an app takes 16 seconds before the menu window closes and the program begins to start. Then it takes another 30sec-1min before the app is usable. smplayer plays video with tearing.
Like right now I tried taking a screenshot, and it tells me
Error launching /usr/share/applications/kde4/ksnapshot.desktop. Either KLauncher is not running anymore, or it failed to start the application.
while the app worked fine.
I also tried running glxgears right now, and it runs but the gears don't move, and terminal states

after 48 requests (48 known processed) with 15 events remaining.
If I'm on dolphin, and I click a video to start smplayer, it takes about 1 minute for it to start.
Memory is using 1.4GB out of 3.6GB, with 0.08GB/2GB swap
Top shows an average usage of less than 10% average. Xorg is always 25%, kwin is always 10% and then rest of the apps are less than that.
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 620 Processor
Integrated VIdeo: HD4200 with fglrx driver
When I ssh into the computer with x tunneling, the programs start up faster than being on the desktop
Just did a clean, fully updated install of Lucid. Unlike the development version I was running, Firefox now will not remember usernames or passwords for sites. I have "Remember passwords for sites" under Preferences checked.

No matter what I did, whether it was clicking the "X" button, hitting Ctrl+W, looking for a "Close Tab" option in the menus, I couldn't close any tabs in Firefox 4. I started disabling extensions, and first, I disabled the "Global Unity Integration" extension, and lo and behold, after a restart of Firefox, the problem is no more.

As I've updated Firefox to version 3.0.5, this problem has appeared:en I close Firefox it asks whether it should save open tabs state. I answer "YES", but when I restart Firefox I see only a blank page...Deleting .mozilla folder in my home directory didn't change this behavior.

I recently tried gnome 3 on my netbook to see if it would work (via PPA) on ubuntu 11.04, it didn't.URL...I rolled backed to gnome 2 (by removing the PPA - comment 7 in the above link), however, now when I use unity as my desktop any changes I make to the docked icons are not saved when I logout. This seems to happen on a couple of different users, so it doesn't seem to be a user setting problem (i.e. a weird file version problem).As a work around I have unity 2D installed on my netbook (an eee 1000H) and this works fine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently was playing with some gnome settings and I went to System > Preferences > Startup applications then I hit the Options tab and checked "Automatically remember applications when logging out" was testing to see if it actually worked... and it did.. so I unchecked it and restarted again and... it's the SAME 3 applications I was running.. and its stuck..tried checking it again and then closing everything but now it's still doing it with the same 3 apps I had running (Totem, Firefox, Pidgin).Anybody know how to wipe where it's remembering the applications I'm running? so this can stop when I log in.

Every time I reboot PC I have to enter the admin password to mount ntfs partition. Is there any way to avoid this. In Fedora 10 there was remember authorization option, is there any option like this in F12?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm on Fedora 13 (64 bit) and using tvtime (latest version 1.0.2-13.fc13 installed via yum) which I've managed to get to work with my old WinTV card (bt878 chipset I think) by having it start with its mixer-device set to "hw:0/Line" (the WinTV card outputs the sound via a cable to the Line In socket of the soundcard).
This all works (I can control the volume in tvtime using the left and right keys) except that the volume resets to zero every time I restart. tvtime remembers all my other settings (and the previous volume is even saved in its config file) so I think the issue is related to ALSA/PulseAudio resetting the appropriate mixer (Line In on the internal sound card).
However, I can't find which mixer tvtime is accessing. In 'Sound Preferences', changing the Master Volume affects the sound from tvtime, but none of the other mixers seem to be related to it (and tvtime doesn't appear on the 'Applications' list). I've also tried finding it in alsamixer, which gives me a choice of 'default' (PulseAudio), 'HDA Intel' (the internal sound card) and 'Brooktree Bt878' (the TV capture card) and again the 'Master' and 'Front' mixers do affect the sound, but are not the mixer that tvtime is accessing.
I know this is a very specific and minor thing, but it's a bit annoying seeing as I've got everything else set up near-perfectly.
Or alternately, as a workaround, is there an easy way of creating a script to lanuch tvtime and send some volume up commands (right arrow key) the first time it is run after a restart (but not the times after that)?
I used to have it set up where fedora remembered startup programs, I turned the feature off, and it continues to remember everything?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to figure out how to tell the shell (tcsh) to remember when I've gone into a symlinked folder, and allow 'cd' to navigate back out of the symlink rather than just navigate to the parent directory of the linked-to folder...
For example:
$ ls -al /jobs

temp -> /mnt/projects2/temp
$ cd /jobs/tech
$ cd ../temp
../temp: No such file or directory.
$ pwd
/mnt/projects1/tech
It appears that my HDD is failing at the moment, so I'm going to replace it by two new disks (RAID1) over the weekend.
At the same moment I'll stick in another 6GB RAM. Because I'm currently running the 32-bit system, I'll be upgrading to 64-bit (doh).
Now then, is it possible to copy all Firefox and Thunderbird settings (settings, accounts, bookmarks, cookies etc) over to the other disk?
If so, which folder(s) do I have to copy?
I use Kubuntu 9.10. All packages are up-to-date. The problem: When opening a new window in firefox, the new window forgets the toolbar settings. So when I start firefox and the first window shows up, it shows my toolbar settings correctly, which is pretty minimalistic actually (no buttons, bookmark menu, google searchbar, etc.). But when I then open a new window from the original one, the new window has forgotten my toolbar settings and shows all the buttons, the searchbar, etc..
This happens irrespective from if I hit Ctrl+N, or print firefox after hitting Alt+F2 (which just opens a second window since the firefox process is already running). What can I do? I read in some other post that you should delete some settings file that might have gone corrupt, but I have done this and it did not help.
I'm on Karmic, and currently the only firefox I have in the repository is 3.5.9, but I would like to install 3.6. Is there a way to just upgrade the current Firefox install without breaking any of my addons/settings or synaptic (and avoid having it screw the version up later)?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI basically want to transfer firefox settings from one machine to another (or from one user to another) which includes some extensions. Instead of running the browser and installing the extension manually, I just want to copy and paste the relevant files.
I noticed that the folder name where the 'extensions' folder is present is different for different users. And just copying to that folder does not work. code...
I'm guessing there are other configuration files that I need to modify. Can someone tell me right way to go about this?
Firefox used to work fine, then I played around (only) with privacy settings, and now it deletes all cookies (including ones set to expire in a month) at the end of the session.It is set to "remember history". Moving to a new profile is not an option.

I have installed BetterPrivacy, WOT, NoSCript and a few other add ons. I have SELinux, ClamAV, AIDE, and chkrootkit installed for Ubuntu.
When we browse certain web sites, we get an error about the server being reset. However, when I put the Ubuntu install cd in and browse with Firefox, obviously with no add ons or settings changed, we can browse to the site with no problems. We are trying to be secure on the internet and I don't want to lower or get rid of any of the settings / add ons we added. What would cause servers to reset when using Firefox / Ubuntu with browser add ons / OS addons?
I remember back a few versions, you needed to take ownership of firefox in order for it to get updates and to save your settings. Is this needed in 10.10? Im giving Ubuntu a go again.
