Ubuntu :: The Close "X" Button In The Top Left Corner On Its Own Like AmigaOS?

Nov 10, 2010

Is there anyway to have the close "X" button in the top left corner of each window on its own? This would make accidental closings of windows less likely when the intent was just to restore/maximize. Mostly it would just speed things up I believe. So is there any way to have the close button in the top left corner of each window and to have the minimize and restore/maximize buttons remain in the top right corner of each window

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Broke Firefox - Tiny Brown Spot At The Upper-left Side Of The Screen

Feb 19, 2010

I have two computers running Ubuntu Gnome with Firefox. Upgrades yesterday (18 February 2010) at about 1430 MDT hours (UTC 2130 hours) broke Firefox on both machines. Firefox is present in the menu, and in /usr/bin/firefox, but it will not launch, not even from the command line. I have tried "sudo apt-get remove firefox" followed by "sudo apt-get install firefox" but the problem persists. When attempting to launch firefox, it does give me a tiny brown spot at the upper-left side of the screen. This can be expanded by dragging so that it is a full screen, labeled "Firefox" but there is no content in the screen...only blank space.

Ubuntu :: Make New Icons Automatically Add To Right Side Instead Of Left Side Of Desktop?

Dec 18, 2010

If a file gets created in the user's Desktop folder, or if a drive is added to the machine and a Desktop icon is correspondingly created, they will by default appear on the left side of the desktop (unless, in the case of the latter, the specific drive has been created before and dragged to the right side, in which case GNOME will remember to put it in the same place).

Because I have a terminal window embedded onto my Desktop in the top left corner and occupying most of the screen), I keep my icons on the right side of the Desktop instead of the left (Mac style) - Any time I add a new drive or a file is sent to the Desktop, however, I have to kill the terminal window to be able to click on the icon, then drag it back to the right side, then restart the terminal.

Is there any way to tweak GNOME so that these icons are added from the top right corner and down instead of from the top left, automatically?

The value was now <Control><Alt><Shift>p. Nothing happens when I press the key combination. I've tried other key combinations also. And I've tried to run root as root and as user. rebooted. Nothing happens. If I change an existing key combination it takes it immediately an xterm pops up.

Ubuntu :: Remove Gconf-Editor Entries

Oct 16, 2010

I'm having trouble removing entries in gconf-editor (GUI).

I have searched everywhere: manpages, internets, forums, can't find anything related.

Here's the situation: I installed Avant Window Navigator and it naturally created entries in gconf-editor for interface, applets etc. The thing is that when I uninstalled it the entries are still there, and yes I have deleted the corresponding folders in home/.gconf/apps. Also did a search of my filesystem for awn, avant widow navigator, avant-window-navigator etc and nothing came up. Looked in /etc, nothing. Looked in /etc/gconf, also nothing.

Ubuntu :: Missing Gconf-editor Options?

Jan 29, 2011

I was trying to make Gnome display the date in a better format. I tried using gconf-editor as described in the thread at [URL], but I also found that apps > panel> default_setup > applets > clock had no prefs item.

Unfortunately, the solution which worked for quixote (stop running as root) didn't help me as I was running as the only account I've set up on the system, and all of the files in ~/.gconf are owned by that user.

Does anyone know what else could cause options to vanish like that? I'm running Gnome 2.32.0.

Debian Multimedia :: Gconf-editor On Modifying The URL?

Jan 19, 2011

I use Debian Lenny and iceweasel as my browser on a gnome core desktop. I also use JFOREX (java application) for my trading platform. It works fine. The problem is when I click on portfolio statement in creates an error which states: "Error in launching web browser". I googled the error on the web and read some sites and it says that I should install gconf-editor and modify the URL handlers in order to point to iceweasel.

The problem is I am practically a noob when it comes to gnome and sadly I am not technical enough to understand the values that needs to be changed using gconf-editor.

Ubuntu :: Change The Screensaver Idle Time Via Gconf-editor?

Jan 11, 2011

I can use the gconf-editor to disable the screen-saver lock and set it to activate when its idle. But no matter what I change /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_delay to, the ScreenSaver UI is never updated and stays at the default 5 minutes. There seems to be no link between the slider bar in the ScreenSaver Preferences and the value that lies at /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_delay...

The reason why I'm doing it through gconf-editor is so a start-up script I have created can use gconftool-2 to alter settings for certain users on login.

Is this broken in Ubunto 10.04 or am I looking in the wrong place.

Fedora :: Minimize Resize Close Buttons Window 15 Gnome 3 Gconf 2

Jun 4, 2011

No where are how enable get back minimize resize close buttons windows top tab Fedora 15 Gnome3 gconf2

There is a question about this in this thread but the thread title did not have any of the above words in it and since most "new" folks don't think to use the "posts" option, I thought I'd make a new titled post.

This seems to be a big irritant of a lot of people around the net with Gnome 3 so I'm going to confirm what other people have said about how to fix the situation.

In "add software" enter this search term:

gconf

You will see quite a few returns, you should click the following:

A process-transparent configuration system (G Conf1-2.3 yada yada)

Graphical Gconf untilities (it may be pulled with the above however).

Install it/them.

One can then type "Gconf2" in terminal and it will open but then close when the terminal is closed, or one can go to activities/applications/tweak advanced settings( the symbol will be the same as for settings in Gnome 3).

In the "Shell" button one will see "Arrangement of buttons on the title bar". Surprisingly, "All" will already be apparent. One need merely verify that it is on "all".

Close gconf.

Nothing will have happened in terms of new buttons even if one closes and opens, say FireFox.

Then reboot.

After the reboot, all three buttons will be present.

There are not a LOT of configuration items in gconf2 but this one seems to be of paramount importance to a lot of people.

One can also do it from command line, and if someone wants to post that please feel free it won't hurt my feelings.
