I have a 1TB External HD that at the time of purchasing was used with my PS3 which only allowed FAT32 HDs. But now I am using it for other uses. I have came across the problem of the file size limit of 4gb that FAT32 has.The problem is I have about 200 GB filled of data on this HDD and wish to convert it to NTFS with no data being lossed. Is this possible and if so how?

I have 2 external drives that I'm using for movies and they're both formatted to fat32. The problem I'm experiencing now is that some of the high quality mkv files are not able to be moved to the drive because of fat32's limitations.
I'd like to convert to ext3 (or 4) and I wanted to check to see if I can do it without having to reformat and without loss of data.
Are there risks of data loss when writing on a NTFS using ntfs-3g, and will windows have trouble reading from that system later?

This forum might not be the best place for this question, but some people here are pretty knowledgeable and may have more insight than I do about this. Anyways, I'm thinking about expanding an NTFS (Windows 7) partition on my desktop computer into unallocated space. I know that there is a risk when shrinking a NTFS partition due to fragmentation but are there any risks of data loss from expanding a NTFS partition? My common sense tells me there isn't a risk but I want to be 100% sure I won't lose any files.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and am trying to use it to recover data from a failed External HDD (NTFS).
The drive failed with an accompanying smell of electric burning and subsequently was not recognised by Windows. It would recognice the enclosure, but told me that the drive had to be reformatted.
I removed the drive from the external enclosure and hooked it up to my PC with a power cable and USB to SATA connector. I can mount the drive in Ubuntu (eventually) and I've learned enough about BASH to navigate through the files on the drive.
Those that I can access I am able to copy across to my internal drive (VERY slowly, but it does do it) but a lot of the directories show up with an Input/output Error when I run the ls -l command.
Is there any way for me to be able to access these files or to recover them? Should I be trying a different technique rather than just attempting to access and copy the files?
how to non-destructively convert a FAT32 HDD into something generally better like NTFS or Ext2/3/4 and etc? Also, what filesystem would you recommend?

Partition 1: Windows 7 - NTFS
Partition 2: Ubuntu 10.10 - Ext4
Partition 3: Data - NTFS
Partition 4: Windows Recovery - meh...
Basically, I have it so that I have one large NTFS partition (Data) for sharing files between Ubuntu and Windows. It works very well. I keep all my Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos on "Data" and then sym-link those folders to my home folder on Ubuntu. Unfortunately, I'm afraid to bootup Windows. Sometimes when I boot Windows, files that I made or edited in Ubuntu get lost, unindexed or corrupt. It happens very frequently with image files (.jpeg, .png, etc.) but also happens with PDFs and folders. This means that not only do these files become unusable, but I also can't delete them. Even using $ rm -rf my_file returns a "Cannot delete my_file. It is not a file or directory."
The only way to get rid of these files is to perform a CHKDSK on Data when I boot Windows. CHKDSK always finds a shed-load of files that have gone haywire. I'm usually greeted by an seemingly indefinite list of "Removing index entry xyz from $afxyz" and other scary looking actions being taken out on my files.I keep backups of my files on an external HDD and a remote server, but it's no use when I'm backing up corrupt files.
I dual boot, in the process of installing Windows 7 & Fedora 13 on a new drive. Back in the day when it was risky for the newbie to read/write NTFS, I created a "shared" FAT32 partition. Even though the later Fedoras could read/write NTFS fresh out of the box, I have kept the "shared" partition for my important files (email, documents, digital camera pics).
Now that I'm installing Win7 and Fedora 13 on a new hard drive and I'm partitioning my disk, I'm scratching my head trying to decide how I should format this partition. I was considering the FAT32 again, but I'd like 50GB, not just 32. At the same time, I'm thinking of making the size sacrifice because, and maybe this is just carryover from the olden days and groundless, I have an irrational worry about using NTFS for my most important files.Maybe someone could assuage my fears. Is it just as safe, at this point, for files to be on a NTFS partition and run under Fedora as they are under FAT32?
I'd like to format my USB in 2 partition: one fat32 (for data switch windows/linux and one for only windows. But when I use gparted to partition my stick in my backtrack installation, windows can only read the fat32, but not the ntfs.

When I installed 13.1 I chose read and write access for all users for all of these media. 13.1 will read from them, but will not write to them. How can I fix this?

View 8 Replies View RelatedSince last last week i've installed Windows 7 and OpenSuSe 11.2 linux several time in my laptop. Each time i do something and Linux boot menu disappears and i again install both operating system. I have installed linux for the first time 6 days before in my life.
I am trying to live without windows. I know i can't for more few months as there is problem in every step for me.
Now i have both os running perfectly and boot menu appearing perfectly.
There are 3 partitions in FAT32 created while installing linux for Windows files. Now i want to change it in to NTFS. All drive are empty.

I'm trying to save documents from a crashed computer using knoppix5.1 i've recently read that the flashdrive i use to transfer theses files needs to be fat32 in order to work...i've already tried transfering files so i'm assuming the flashdrive is in the ntfs format.so what i need is info on how to convert my flashdrive from ntfs to fat32.

Just installed 11.3 on my computer, however when I connect an external NTFS harddisk I receive an error message. When I open dolphin to connect to an internal NTFS partition I receive the message:

i have installed ubuntu server 64bit with lamp so all in one (apache, mysql and php) and i need to downgrade mysql because of serious problems with mysql 5.1 and this is the only solution. But i need to be working with apatche and php also and have my.ini like i have now (can backup it) so is there any save way to do that?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.04 on the laptop and it looks pretty good. I currently run 9.10 on the main desktop and would like to upgrade to 10.04, by pressing "upgrade" in the update manager, but I have some questions before I do, namely about data loss.
If I upgrade, will stuff like Thunderbird keep my emails, FF keep its profile (cookies, bookmarks, addons etc..), the documents keep all the documents, I have an apache server installed with a few websites - will they still be there after an upgrade? I also have a virtual machine with windoze on, what about all the stuff in there and VMware itself?
Or, will I need to back everything up onto an external hard drive (not sure how to backup Thunderbird and FF), and then reinstall everything, and transfer all the documents, websites etc.. back over again??
Just installed opensuse 11.3 Kdeversion on my laptop. Before installing it on live mode i had a problem of accessing my other drives (NTFS, FAT32 and EXT4) which said HAL system policy...etc mounting error. I could access all drives with root privilege. I thought problem will be solver once i install opensuse on my system. How ever i was really disappointed after seeing the same problem post install. Googled around for the solution and got this link

After this the problem got worse now i am not able to see any of the drives in the side panel. Gone through many forum and posts all discuss about external USB HDD.
My external HDD became read only, and even not readable for a folder in it. Until now I had no problem with reading/writing on it but at my last mounting it get unwritable. When I right-click and try to change rights it says you cant it's a read only file system...

I used ddrescue to image the drive and fdisk -l to try to understand where the partitions were. I got the following:

I have a Dell workstation, 2 HDD, HDD 1 setuped Red Hat 5.3 with LVM, and that HDD 2 is empty, not install RAID 1. And, I want to setup RAID 1 (hardware RAID)...but, have a problem. I don't want to lost data on HDD 1 when I setup raid, I try ghost or backup it, but when I restore, it error because LVM is setup on that.

recently I was trying to setup openvpn and had to copy a folder with configuration files from /usr/doc/openvpn_<version>/easy-rsa to /etc/openvpn.
I am sure the copying completed cause I got a prompt, but a few seconds later the battery died on me. When I got mains and powered it up, I could see the directory I copied under /etc/openvpn, and the files where all there too. but they all contained nothing. i.e. they had a size of 0.
I read [URL] Fthat an external journal filesystem for root is not supported. I am not sure If it applies to my situation though. As in does it use an internal journal instead?
and the bottom line is: shouldn't the copying have completed successfully? shouldn't I be worried, that this copy failed?
This problem is not exclusive to Ubuntu, I've experienced it in Windows and OSX as well, but it seems that almost every time I transfer a large number of files (i.e. my music collection) between my desktop computer and laptop via my external hard drive, I end up losing files for no reason. I usually don't notice the files are missing until later on, because I am never informed of any data loss. Now, every time I make a large transfer of files, I just do it two or three times to ensure that I don't lose any files.

Windows is no help at all... I tried that out of desparation.
