Ubuntu :: Editing /etc/sudoers Don't Want To Mess Up Again

Feb 16, 2011

I edited my /etc/sudoers file the other day to add timestamp_timeout=0 to cause sudo to ask for a password every time. I used visudo in sudo mode and when it came to saving it appeared to want to save the file as sudoers.tmp so I edited this to sudoers. Anyway some how may edit failed. I booted up into terminal and reedited and somehow lost all access to the sudo mode. I think the file ended up with the wrong permissions.

After a fresh install I don't want to mess this up again. So please, please tell me how to save it. Should I save as sudoers.tmp or sudoers? I presume a could have made a typo, but am assuming not. I don't want to reinstall ubuntu and all the packages again.

Security :: Using Sudoers To Restrict Editing Of Certain Files?

Aug 2, 2010

In a recent discussion I had, I was led to believe I could use sudoers to restrict using vi (for example) for the editing of say specific config files. I know how to allow root use of vi and how to lock it down from getting to a bash prompt with NOEXEC tag,but I can't figure out how to restrict the use of vi to only edit certain files. Tutorials and howtos I have checked don't address this

Ubuntu :: Got Into A Bit Of A Mess With Firefox?

Nov 22, 2010

A month or so ago I installed the beta version of FF4 - it was too buggy and gave me problems so I uninstalled and went back to FF3.x.x -or so I thought. For some reasons it set the PPA for daily updates and I ended up with Namoroka updating nearly every day, at present version 3.6.13pre.

I disabled the repositories and have been using it but I have noticed at times it 'freezes' i.e. high CPU use and also when typing into a textbox, like this the text is slow to appear. I want to go back to my original FF3.x.x version that came with 10.10. Can anyone point me to a tutorial or take time out to reply here with a procedure to do this?

Edit: I have checked with nautilus and I seem to have various firefox folders all over the place - and a bunch more mozilla folders :

Ubuntu :: Multiple Frontends Mess With Settings?

Feb 19, 2010

for the first time I've gotten my hands on a ASRock ION 330HT and set it up as a front end to my existing front/backend which sits in the living room. I have EVERYTHING working but I've found an annoyance which is probably as a result of one of my screw-ups.

Basically - the backend (/frontend) stores it's videos in the default /var/lib/mythtv/ blah blah blah. This has always worked. I copy my video files there, rescan and bob's your uncle.

With the ASRock, I'd like to store some files locally, so currently the videos folder is set to /var/jan/Videos. I'll work on smb mounting later.

When I scan that, the videos also show and bob's my second uncle.

HOWEVER. After the scan from the ASRock, my MAIN box also is looking for files in /home/jan/Videos (which doesn't exist there) and finds nothing. If I rescan - all is good again. Then going back the the ASRock, IT is then looking for the files in /var/lib/mythtv etc. and finds nothing.

Why should setting in EITHER frontend mess with the setting in the other? That kind of defeats the purpose of having multiple front ends with multiple hardware/software configurations right?

Ubuntu :: Repair MBR Without Mess Up The Windows And Recovery Partitions

May 11, 2011

This post is a follow up to this one: [URL] My computer is an IBM R52 running Windows Professional (previously dual-booting with Ubuntu 10.10, but that's gone now, and I don't dare reinstall it until the HDD partitions and mbr are properly working again). I think that the shred command mentioned there simply messed up my MBR, and maybe my partition table. Here's the partitions on my HDD:

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 60.0 GB, 60011642880 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 7296 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x7e93bd30
[Code]...

My question is, is it safe to use something like SuperGrub to repair the MBR? I really don't want to mess up the Windows and recovery partitions. I've done plenty of research on this, but am not confident until someone says that it works in my case.

General :: How To Reset Compiz Mess Up

Mar 29, 2010

I've played around with some themes, installed, activated and deactivated the emerald theme manager, etc. (I'm tired and did a lot of stuff). Now several things aren't alright:

- I've chosen to initiate the windows-switch-thing with mouse button 2. It dowsn't work anymore.

- The transparent background of my temrinal is too transparent - meaning: It always shows the desktop picture

- I've assigned all my media players to workspace 4 - it doesn't work anymore

Is there a way to just reset compiz to its original settings? PS: I know the informations I've given are kind of vague, but I'm too tired to do more. It's Ubuntu 9.1 and I'm using Gnome, not KDE.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rhythmbox Making A Mess Of Folders And File Names

Jan 8, 2010

I've been enjoying using Rhythmbox to rip a stack of CDs. Initially I had problems getting it to recognise Lame but following uninstalling and reinstalling it, it seemed to be working well. That is, until I looked in my Music folder.

It turns out files have been placed in individual folders, named "number - title.udio" (e.g.: "11 - She Can Do What She Wants.udio". The mp3 file itself is named identically throughout - it's the string for the gstreamer settings, i.e. "x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc preset=1002 ! xingmux ! id3v2muxmp3".

The settings within Rhythmbox's properties for folder and file naming are all set to the sensible default. This is a pain. In the short term I'm going to try EasyTAG to sort it out, but ultimately I need to sort this or find alternative software.

OpenSUSE :: Multimedia Codec Mess - Ffmpeg Options?

Mar 23, 2010

I'm writing a wrapper for FFMPEG and need help of a multimedia guru. The more I read about containers, formats and codecs the more confused I become, it all seems to be a pretty big mess. To convert a video file with ffmpeg you need to specify a few arguments for ffmpeg:

- input file
- some video/audio options (bit rates, sizes and so on)
- format (to force format)
- codec (to force codec)
- output file

My confusion is all about the format and output file extension. If I want to encode my file in MPEG-4, I'll use either 'libx264' or 'libxvid' codec. Then the encoded stream needs to be stored in a file. If I use '.mp4' as the output file, it'll be stored in that file. If I use '.mkv', the video will still be MPEG-4 but stored in a Matroska container. But what do I do with the format option? When I force the format to 'mp4', does it mean I don't have to enter output file, it'll be stored as '.mp4' anyway? Or if I use '-matroska' will I still have to put it into a container '.mkv'? Can I use a '-matroska' format but '.mp4' output file for example?

What's the difference between the format and output file in this context? Or what does forcing the format really do?

The new NVIDIA drivers don't seem to work as seamlessly as back in Jaunty and before. In Lucid when I activated the drivers I had to do some grub tweaks to make my splash look normal... But with Maverick it is even more messed up...

Problem: The splash either doesn't appear at all (black screen) or it appears in the text format rather than graphics... In some instances it even hopelessly tried to load the graphics splash - loaded the background but the instead of Ubuntu logo and the progress-bar animation it displayed a "Ubuntu 10.10" in a monospace font.

Fedora :: Make Compiz Fusion Not To Mess With Cursor Theme?

Jun 12, 2010

I have official Compiz Fusion running on my Fedora 13 64-bit. I also installed some custom cursor themes and I'm seeing some strange behaviour. When mouse is on my Desktop the custom cursor theme is replaced by the default one. When I launch Firefox, for example, and move cursor inside Firefox window, then my custom cursor is being shown. Also, if I go to resize some window the custom "resize cursor" is being shown, or if system is processing something then custom hourglass cursor is shown again.

Basically while on Desktop or Gnome panels the custom cursor is being replaced by the default Fedora cursor.
This only happens when I choose Compiz as my window manager. With metacity my custom cursor theme is behaving properly. Is it possible to make Compiz Fusion not to mess with my cursor theme? Or maybe it is a Compiz bug?

Ok, this indeed is a bug, but I'm not sure if it's a Gnome or Compiz bug. Here is a fix (a bad one for now) which might save someone time. The credit for this does not belong to me, I got it form this link. So, here it goes:

1. Install gconf-editor by running "yum -y install gconf-editor"
2. Change your windows manager to metacity temporarily
3. Change your cursor theme to the desired custom one
4. Run gconf-editor and go to "desktop->gnome->peripherals->mouse" and remember the value of "cursor theme" option this gconf-editor branch.
5. Create directory with name "default" in "/home/yourUserName/.icons/" directory.
6. Inside newly created "default" directory create file with name "index.theme" with the following content:

Code:
[Icon Theme]
Name = <anything you want>
Comment = <anything you want>
Example = <anything you want>
Inherits = <THEME NAME YOU FOUND IN STEP 4>

7. After saving the file re-enable Compiz as your window manager and logout/login to your account. The problem with this fix is that you will have to modify "index.theme" file every time you will want to change your icon theme, but it works nevertheless.

OpenSUSE :: ATI Fglrx Video Driver Install Made A Mess / How To Fix

Jun 13, 2010

OpenSuse 11.2
linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop x86_64
ATI fglrx video driver v10.4
ATI radeon hd3200 video adapter

VirtualBox (any version) crashes at startup if the video acceleration options are enabled. This was not a problem before installing fglrx. The crash occurs when VirtualBox queries the video driver about OpenGL, I am guessing from the log file.

To (supposedly) have access to all of the features possible in the video adapter I installed the ATI fglrx video driver. I (apparently foolishly) chose the custom, installation-specific path rather than the more general default path.

After installing the driver I saw no observable improvement in performance or feature set. Worse, there are couple of new features that are decidedly undesirable, and cannot be disabled. At least one pre-loaded font simply disappeared.

So I reverted to the original (open source?) radeon driver ("sax2 -r -m 0=radeon" at runlevel 3). All seemed welluntil I ran VirtualBox.

One thing I have not tried is to run the fglrx default installation. I fear making things worse.

Can anyone suggest what might have happened with the fglrx installation, and how to fix it?

Debian Hardware :: Can Hdparm's Readahead Setting Mess Up IDE Hard Drive?

Sep 10, 2011

On a Powerbook G4, I set hdparm to set the filesystem readahead (-a) to the maximum 2048 on boot. This produces a visible increase in performance... But today the hard drive started acting up - first generating I/O errors when trying to access various system binaries, and the second time bringing the desktop to a standstill and emitting loud clunking noises. In both cases the drive worked normally after a reboot... Even so, these are not what I'd consider good signs. However, the computer was working perfectly up until now, so I'm wondering if my tweaking was responsible. Can overly aggressive filesystem readahead settings damage an IDE hard drive?
