Ubuntu :: Dragging Windows To Other Desktop?
Jul 11, 2011
I'm using ubuntu 11.04 with unity, i was wondering if it is possible to change desktop as you drag the window? I used to have compiz cube and dragin the window too far to the left or too far to the right would rotate the cube. Now i simply wanted it to switch desktop as i drag the window

For what its worth: Probably mentioned someplace but I did not find it.
I am using 11.04 64 with the Classic desktop. I found that dragging windows was terrible rough. Consumed CPU when dragged.
I loaded CompizConfig Settings Manager. Go to the bottom where the 'Work Arounds' are. Enable 'Don't wait for video sync'.
Made a huge difference for me. Able to make it look and work like 10.10 for the most part. But I like a clean old Gnome look and feel.

this might not seem a big issue but I'd really like to know whether it's possible to stop Nautilus from unfocusing windows when pressing on an item in another windows and draging it to the first one. For example, I want to move a file from one window to another. I click the middle mouse button on that item and drag it to the first one which looses it's focus so often it's quite irritating.

Since I have upgraded to to 10.10, I've noticed that I can no longer drag programs to another desktop. Somehow this setting must have been disabled. How does one reactive this setting? (I'm guessing its Compiz related...)

I'm trying to create a web shortcut (desktop file) by dragging the icon from the Firefox address bar to a Thunar folder or desktop. This worked with older versions of Thunar and Firefox, but now that I'm running Xubuntu Natty (Firefox 5 and Thunar 1.2.1) it fails. Depending on the web site I try, it either creates a file containing the page's html instead of creating a .desktop shortcut file, or fails to create any file at all.

I'm using Natty and I'm thoroughly enjoying Unity, but I've noticed that when I close Banshee, so that it is still playing music in the background, I can't drag any other window out of maximization state. btw, I don't know if "dragging out of maximization" sounds ambiguous, I mean to say that I drag the top panel and the window stops being maximized (yes, i just tried to bastardize a bastardization).

I am looking for a similar thing from compiz/unity/kde for xfce: The thing where you drag a window to the left and it is shown on the half of the screen or drag it to a corner and it will be sized to a quarter of the screen, etc...

I can only reposition (drag) opened windows within the workspace switcher, but not in an opened desktop. Is this normal for Natty Unity?

I am an old XFCE fan, but would like to give Gnome a serious try (it has several things I like a lot). One XFCE feature I am missing is the intuitive capability to drag a window directly to another workspace. I did a bit of research and installed compiz (I am running debian testing on my laptop), but I am still unable to drag windows to another workspace.
Maybe I should tick the right option in compiz configuration manager, but I do not know where to start from. note that I am not after any eyecandy, I just would like to have this cute little feature of XFCE in my gnome environment.

I'm fairly new to ubuntu and I've been messing around with customizing my desktop/UI over the past week or so and I must have messed something up. After I got sick of how slow Wallpapoz was to change backgrounds between workspaces (I'm using GNOME) I turned on the Wallpaper plugin in Compiz and turned off the nautilus desktop. That worked great for the backgrounds but now whenever I try to drag windows around the cursor shudders and shakes and the wondows won't move smoothly. I eventually get them to where I want them to go but it's very annoying.
So far, I have re-enabled the nautilus desktop and reinstalled nautilus with synaptic, neither of which did anything.

i would like to disable the aero snap function when using the mouse to drag a window to screen edges... i like to keep multiple small windows with various sizes at the edges of the screen (i.e. with media players listening to music or watching videos to have the screen in one corner while using the remainder of the screen for something else)
i would still like to keep this function with hotkeys (<super> + up/down/left/right) is there any way to work around this?

Everything worked 100% great untill I change color depth to 16 bits.I do not want 24 Bits, I want 16 Bits. I have good reasons. Never had this problem in Gutsy 7.10 ...I deeply regret in upgrading to 9.10 ...
My video card:
Gforce 7950 GX2
Changes to xorg.conf file: Firstly, I saved it at 16 color depth with the sudo nvidia-settings and by clicking on the save to xorg.conf file Button. Rebooted computer....... It worked, saved file, and I got the following bugs:
*Cannot move windows by dragging their title bars.
*Cannot see close "X" Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Minimize Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Maximize Button in the title bar.
Went back to 24 bits and problem got resolved. Then i tryed: I did sudo gedit xorg.conf I changed all the 24's with 16's ... Rebooted computer....... It works GOOD... BUT: I got the same bugs from before. I will retype them below
*Cannot move windows by dragging their title bars.
*Cannot see close "X" Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Minimize Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Maximize Button in the title bar.
My xorg.conf file:

# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@palmer) Sun Feb 1 20:21:04 UTC 2009

I have my main box, Ubuntu 10.04lts, and I am trying to use remote desktop viewer to see the desktop on a Windows XP machine. The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

I am a ubuntu novice. I am running 10.04 LTS on a Lenova laptop. Runs fine. Yesterday upgraded firefox and upgraded Java 6 from update 20 to update 24 so that I could use the Zotero bibiliographic program in FF. After the upgrade and restart, the windows title bar that includes minimize, maximize and close buttons has disappeared from all windows that I open except google chrome. If I open and app, or FF, or the dvd player, title bar is gone. I have noticed that Java updates have caused similar problems before but none of the prescribed steps seems to have changed my system

I have VMware server installed on this machine. I also have a Windows XP VM running all the time. I have it bridged so it gets a valid IP from my router and such and is in my network. I use KRDC to remote desktop to it and I make it full screen. However if I want to go back to my desktop I have to minimize KRDC.
Is there a RPD client out there I can use so I can go full screen on 1 desktop and have everything else on another desktop then use KDE's Desktop switcher or ctrl+alt+arrow keys to switch between desktops to flip between Windows XP and Linux without having to minimize?

As you probably noticed, the "Light" themes (Ambiance and Radiance) as well as quite a few other gtk themes now enable moving windows by grabbing the menubar, which is quite useful with the unified titlebar/menubar style of certain themes.
So does anyone know of any way I can force Firefox to behave the same way.
I would prefer to do it through userChrome.css rather than adding an extension but whatever works.
Firefox is the only non-gtk app I use extensively so I'm not too bothered about any other apps that don't follow the behaviour.

I have a windows PC which I would like to dual boot with Ubuntu. However, I have some very important documents scattered all over the "My Documents" folder. I don't want to move these to the linux partition manually because of the possibility of misplacing, deleting or otherwise doing something that could alter these files. (They happen to be notes that I make on Biology).
My plan was to mount the windows partitions on Ubuntu and then use symbolic links to navigate to the "My Docs" folder on the windows partition.
This is the main question: It is possible to mount hard drives and then make an existing folder on Ubuntu (for example the /home/user/Documents folder)point to the "MY DOCUMENTS" folder on windows? (By "point to" I mean something like a symbolic link. So, for example, by double clicking on the /home/user/Documents folder, the "My documents folder" on windows should be opened. )

I'm running Gnome in Ubuntu 10.04. Nautilus used to work fine on my system but now it's doing something strange. Whenever I drag a file out of the Nautilus window to move it somewhere else, as soon as the mouse cursor goes out of the window Nautilus closes and the file I was dragging also disappears.

I just installed 10.04.2 Desktop. Full install, reformatted all partitions. Hardware: Dell Optiplex GX200 with Dell 781p monitor Dell mouse and kybd.
All appeared to install well and as expected.
The computer has locked up 4 times, now. Whenever I attempt to use the mouse to drag a window to a different place on the desktop the monitor goes half black (bottom half of screen) and I loose the ability to use the mouse or keyboard to provide input. The only recourse is to shut it down hard and boot up again.

When I click the window with the left mouse button my window gets dragged, instead that the GUI elements are getting selected.
For example: Opening Firefox and selecting the address field doesn't activate the field to write in. Clicking buttons is impossible. Any action in the window seems like blocked. I'm working this around by holding Shift + Left mouse button; then it's possible to activate the GUI element. Observation: This happened just today when I switched on my computer and seems to affect only me as my user! Logging in as another user doesn't bring up this error. Everything works as usual as possible. The Gnome Panel is not affected. Closing, minimizing/maximizing windows is possible. Clicking anywhere on the window with the right mouse button opens the window options menu, not the expected options. Hovering over a button seems to be recognized as it changes its properties, but clicking still drags the window. Restarting X and restarting Ubuntu doesn't change anything.

Running 11.04 64bit. AMD Radeon HD 6450 with proprietary drivers.
This is a new PC that I got a few weeks ago. Up until tonight, there have never been any issues. I earlier had an update for dbus and dbus-x11 which prompted me to reboot. After rebooting, I am noticing some mild to severe problems when gaming.
It's like there's a jitter, yet the ingame fps (frames per second) is normal. Window dragging on the desktop looks fine, but dragging the unity launcher up/down looks slightly jittery too.
Thinking it was just some sort of Unity/compiz problem, I booted into Classic desktop with no effects. Issue still persists.
Really want to fix this, as it's a pretty annoying issue =/
I realized it seems to have caused issues with scrolling too. Scrolling does not look smooth and is also jittery.

The following script will work when I type the path to the file I want to checksum, but not when I drag the file to the terminal because the linux terminal (unlike the Mac) automatically puts quotes around the file path, which causes an error. (Clarification: am referring to gnome-terminal. Thanks, GrapefruiTgirl.) I did not find anything in gconf-editor or anywhere else to alter this behaviour, and my post in Launchpad is unanswered so far. (the script in itself is not very useful, I just stumbled upon this error when experimenting with bash).
So, is there a workaround for stripping the quotes from the input, or can I configure the terminal to not quote the input when I drag a file into it (which I would prefer?)
I am currently logged in from Mac OS, but the question refers to ubuntu karmic with which I dual boot.
