Ubuntu :: Copy Keyring Passwords To An External Hdd?
Oct 18, 2010
Is there any way to copy saved passwords for websites and WiFi networks onto a harddrive by finding some sort of file(s) in a given directory? I want to update to 10.10 by doing a fresh install but would like to transfer my passwords easily.

I user krusader for ftp, but it cannot remember remote passwords. every time i connect to the remote site i am prompted for the keyring password and after that the remote password. even if i tick "remember password", next time the password is asked.. why does it do that?
After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 krusader plays annoying sounds if i enter wrong password. sounds are disabled in gnome, but i know that krusader is an alien guy. how to tell him to keep quiet? why did sounds come with 10.10 ?

I have set my computer to auto-login and as a result, the keyring asks me to enter my password every time I start the computer in order to access the password for the Ubuntu One client.
The whole point of auto-login was to not have to enter a password.
Is there a sensible way to use Ubuntu One without having to supply a password each time?
I say sensible, because I would like to avoid leaving the keyring totally open. I understand the purpose of the keyring, and that it should be locked by default. As far as I can see, the only potential work-arounds for the problem I am having seems to be to set the keyring password blank, thereby exposing all my keys to anyone on the computer. This option obviously defeats the purpose of having a keyring in the first place.
Is there not an option that lets me set that specific passwords are available automatically to specific applications? So that the entire keyring remains locked, but those passwords I deem ok to be unsecured are available to those applications I deem trustworthy? This option seem to exist for network-manager, why not for the Ubuntu One client?
Is this option not available, or am I missing something? If it isn't, I guess that I'll stop using Ubuntu One, which would be a shame.

Just the other day, when I updated my system, gnome-keyring was updated.Ever since then, none of my passwords will 'keep' between sessions. Every time I log in from a reboot, I have to create a new default keyring password, enter my wireless WPA key, my password for gwibber (twitter and facebook) and all of my IM accounts.

I have an external hard disk with lots of big files and a lot of small matlab script files .m. I would like to grab all the files inside that harddisk that have the .m extension or the *.mat file extension (both are matlab files). Of course this is a
-first-find the *.m files script and
-then copy the files into the hard disk.
What I do not know is how I can also keep the structure of the folders containing the *.m and *.mat files when I will copy them in my local hard disk. As this external hard disk contains 2TB of data it is not possible to copy all the files first and then remove the unnecessary. So I have to find and copy only the files I need but with also keeping the tree structure that the external hard disk has.

I have a 16GB Ubuntu Webserver running on a Transcend SMART CF chip (Yes I know all the reasons not to). I want to move that entire system (OS, Files and structure) to an external bootable HD that will probably be closer to 100GB. What's the easiest way to do this and have it be plug and play. By which I mean I can then plug the drive into a new system and boot it up just as it was running on the old system.

I plan to reformat & reinstall my linux (centos). Before doing this, I got to backup my files into my USB external hard disk from Seagate (FreeAgent). The problem I faced is that I could not copy file into the hard disk even I was in root user. It prompted me that it is only read-only. I just wonder why.I have tested with my thumb drive. It worked. May I know why I could not copy file to the USB FreeAgent hard disk. Due to file system?

I have an 500GB Iomega external drive connected to my iMac and used for the Mac Time Machine back-ups. I want to put a small partition on there that I can use to back-up my Ubuntu files which are on my laptop. I thought that I would be able to just copy the entire Home file on Ubuntu to this drive be drag and drop but this does not work. I get a notice to inform me that I do not have permission to create file there. I can however move files in the other direction (from the external drive to Ubuntu on the laptop. I assume this is because the external drive was formatted for Mac and I hope the problem will be solved if I could format a part of the drive in ext4 to accommodate the linux files.

I have an account in university on Linux machine with 10TB of free space accessible via SFTP. I would like to backup my Windows 7 x64 laptop to university. Currently I am using rsync+cygwin, but backup is pretty slow (without shadow copy) and I hate console window appearing every day on my screen when I login.
So I am looking for something like Windows Backup but with support for SFTP. Combination of tools will work too.

I can take apart my computer and fix a problem and then re-install the partitions. Hopefully I won't have to re-install, but I want to make backups just in case
-HP laptop with a windows (NTFS) and an Ubuntu (ext3) partition ~ 500GB total
-Iomega 1TB external hard drive partitioned into a 500GB NTFS storage, 250GH BLANK ext3 Linux Backup, and 250GB BLANK NTFS Windows Backup.
I want to copy my windows and linux to their respective 250GB spaces on the External HD.
1.) Can you direct me to places on the net that describes this in detail?
2.) Can I copy a partition while running that partition?
3.) Will copying C:/ in windows over to the external HD copy entire partition?
4.) Can I copy a Laptop partition to a external HD partition that is bigger?
5.) Do I have to use partition manager software or can I do this from terminal/cmd prompt?

I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.
Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.
Where does iTunes store its stuff?
Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?
Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?
Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?
Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?
Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?
Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.

I'm asking this in the right place. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and recently started getting a pop-up similar to the following at every boot up: Login keyring failed Your login keyring did not succeed. Enter login keyring here: That's not [exactly] what it says, but very similar. I should probably add that I have not set up any different 'user profiles' or whatever they're called, but am the only one using this PC...at least, at the present time. Again, this only started a couple of weeks ago and I don't know what I did to start it nor what to do to stop it. I guess it's not extremely painful to have to type my password in every time, but a PITA nevertheless.

I am able to access XP shared folders through my netbook(linux). However, i wanted to copy files from XP infact folders using TERMINAL in my netbook, not copy and paste using my mouse. How to copy a Read-Only file in Linux and make the copy writable with a single cp command in Linux (Ubuntu 10.04)? The --no-preserve and --preserve seemed to be good candidates, except that they should "and" the mode flags, while what I am looking for is something that will "or" them (add +w mode).
More details: I have to import a repository from GIT to Perforce. I want that all Perforce depot files are Read-Only (that is how Perforce was designed), while all other files that were derived/copied from depot files are writable. Currently if a Makefile tries to copy a Read-Only file then the derived file will also be Read-only. This leads to build-errors when cp tries to overwrite Read-Only file second time. Of course the --force is a workaround here but then the derived file is also Read-Only. Also I do not want to mess with "chmod" after each "cp" command - I will do that only as the last resort.

I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.

I am trying to set up Ubuntu like I had on my windows PC. I have my account, my wifes account and my kids account. I want passwords set for both myself and my wife but I don't want the kids to be required to have a password to log in. When setting up Ubuntu, it looks like it was all or none. I have dabbled with Linux off and on for years and am sure there is a way to set this up but I have no idea how.

I work at a local computer shop as a computer technician and we get many computer in daily that require external virus scans (having to take out the hard drives, sticking it in another machine) just to scan (if we're lucky we can sometimes just do it in safe mode). Now what I want to know is...
1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu to an external HDD and use it virtually anywhere I plug it in? Will it pick up the network card, graphics card, etc so I can just plug and go? (Of course there are drivers for some computers).
2. Is it possible to run a Windows oriented virus scanner on Ubuntu? I know I can use WINE to run Windows applications, but will it prove to be compliant with virus scanners as well?
3. The main reason why I want it to be able to pick up on hardware and just work is because I plan on using it for schooling / travelling as well, have all my documents etc saved on it for easy access.
I've used Ubuntu in the past on an old laptop that didn't have much memory, small HDD, and a crap processor but that was 5-6 years ago (I still have the disk they sent me for free ).

I installed Ubuntu on external USB hard drive and while booting I did got option to log into windows XP, Ubuntu. Both operating systems ran fine. i.e. GRUB had overwritten MBR and I was able to dual boot. Main issue: I have installed Ubuntu in external hard-drive so that I can use Linux whenever I want other people who are using same computer can operate on WindowsXP. Sometimes my external hard drive gives problem if there is loose connection and so that oper people using computer do not face any problem I want to disconnect external USB HD whenever I am not using Linux. GRUB menu was pointing to external hardrive so disconnecting it meant my system wont boot!!I rewrote MBR using WindowsXP CD recovery mode. Now I am unable to boot from external USB hard disk( I thought I would be able to if I choose USB hard drive in BIOS option but it did not work it logged into WindowsXP by default). Is there any way I can change WindowsXP boot.ini file so that it also shows Ubuntu in external hard disk? Or is there any way.(I do not want GRUB way as then I would have to keep my external drive connected to log into windows - which I do not want).

I've just installed 10.04 x64 and I've had some problems with samba (cifs/windows file sharing). It seems like samba is forgetting user passwords, so on every reboot I have to add a password for the user that needs access: sudo smbpasswd -a tietze
I've tried restarting samba (sudo service sbmd restart), but it does not work. I have to add a new password for the user with the command above.
I tried to google a bit for a solution, but only found the following thread with a problem that seems related: [other] Samba forgets user
making samba remember passwords betweeen reboots/shutdowns?

this is just weird. Did a fresh install from the alternate CD, including deleting original Win XP partition. Installation went just fine. Building this for my wife, so when asked for user name and password, entered those for her. As required, enteressword, then re-entered for verification. When setup completed, I tried to login, but absolutely could not. System recognizes the keyboard, responds to enter key, enters dots in the PW box as I'm typing but only returns Authentication Failed.
Thinking I must have mistyped the PW both times, I reinstalled. This time, I created my user name and password; the one my hand muscles know so I don't even have to think about it. Get to the end, reboot and, I can't log in!Does anybody have any idea what's going on here? I'd truly love to find out; my wife is getting restless

I used to have ettercap on backtrack 4 and everything was ok...But on ubuntu 10.04 I'm having this issue; it is not showing passwords (if i log in for example in a forum with a http link )and not sending false certificate (if i try to log in in https links, after uncommenting the redir ip tables in etter.conf).Other features seems to work alright (such as dns spoofing) and the arp poisonning is succesful. Besides, Wireshark gets the passwords.
