Ubuntu :: Cannot Ssh From External / What To Do?
Feb 21, 2010
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 recently and registered with dyndns.org was able to ssh internally and from external.
a) ssh user@hostname # hostname worked fine
b) ssh -v user@hostname.dyndns.xxx worked fine.
Today, there were 200+ updates and after that I cannot ssh when I use the dyndns hostname, It stops after line
"connecting to hostname.dyndns.xxx [x.x.x.x] port 22
I checked site forums and checked /etc/ssh/ssh_config and sshd_config. I use ufw and it allows port 22.
Can anyone suggest what may be stopping it to login. I am guessing some updates may have caused it to stop.

I work at a local computer shop as a computer technician and we get many computer in daily that require external virus scans (having to take out the hard drives, sticking it in another machine) just to scan (if we're lucky we can sometimes just do it in safe mode). Now what I want to know is...
1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu to an external HDD and use it virtually anywhere I plug it in? Will it pick up the network card, graphics card, etc so I can just plug and go? (Of course there are drivers for some computers).
2. Is it possible to run a Windows oriented virus scanner on Ubuntu? I know I can use WINE to run Windows applications, but will it prove to be compliant with virus scanners as well?
3. The main reason why I want it to be able to pick up on hardware and just work is because I plan on using it for schooling / travelling as well, have all my documents etc saved on it for easy access.
I've used Ubuntu in the past on an old laptop that didn't have much memory, small HDD, and a crap processor but that was 5-6 years ago (I still have the disk they sent me for free ).

I installed Ubuntu on external USB hard drive and while booting I did got option to log into windows XP, Ubuntu. Both operating systems ran fine. i.e. GRUB had overwritten MBR and I was able to dual boot. Main issue: I have installed Ubuntu in external hard-drive so that I can use Linux whenever I want other people who are using same computer can operate on WindowsXP. Sometimes my external hard drive gives problem if there is loose connection and so that oper people using computer do not face any problem I want to disconnect external USB HD whenever I am not using Linux. GRUB menu was pointing to external hardrive so disconnecting it meant my system wont boot!!I rewrote MBR using WindowsXP CD recovery mode. Now I am unable to boot from external USB hard disk( I thought I would be able to if I choose USB hard drive in BIOS option but it did not work it logged into WindowsXP by default). Is there any way I can change WindowsXP boot.ini file so that it also shows Ubuntu in external hard disk? Or is there any way.(I do not want GRUB way as then I would have to keep my external drive connected to log into windows - which I do not want).

I have an external hard drive with an xfs partition on it. It was using an external journal, but in re-installing Slackware I removed the partition holding the external journal, forgetting what it was at the time. I didn't touch the contents of the external hard drive, but now I can't mount it and the various xfs programs seem to demand that it be mounted in order for them to change anything.Anyone have any ideas on how to change an xfs partition from external log to internal? Failing that, how do I get the information off it?

I plugged in my external dvd-r (asus) via usb. It showed me some message on shell, that it has detected the cdrom(although its dvd rom as well but nevermind) and its of ASUS. But how do i know which dev it was associated with in /dev/? Since i had to test something, i plugged it out, and save the output of ls /dev/ > ~/result.txt
after plugging the dvd-rom, i compared the results and was able to find that it was associated with simple cdrom i.e. /dev/cdrom. I wanted to know that is there any command that will tell me which /dev/ file was associated with external dvdrom? i tried to see in the following result
1) df -h ( no results, just the already mounted partitions)
2) fdisk -l ( same as above)
3) dmesg | tail (shown almost the same result as was shown on shell at the time of plugging the dvd)

I'm rather (VERY) inexperienced when it comes to Linux, but Fedora 14 is the environment I have to use on my laptop at work, so please forgive any dumb that comes out of me.
How do I tell php to send an email with mail() using an external mail server?
The situation: I've got apache/php running a webserver on my local machine. It's for dev purposes only, and the website files I'm using are checked out from our SVN. This lets me make changes to our website while not actually changing our website.
I've come across an issue I'm fixing where I need to verify that an email is successfully getting sent out, and unfortunately, this email is sent out using php's mail(), and not our website's usual $mail object. Unfortunately, I don't have the authority to change how this sends out right now, just when it sends out.
I've been running everything fine on my machine for a month now, and haven't needed the mail stuff until now. How do I tell php to send an email using an external server?

So the other day I was trying to repartition my external hard drive and somehow accidentally wiped the whole thing out. I tried using testdisk to restore it and I thought I did ok but know when I try to mount the hd i get the following error
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
[mntent]: line 10 in /etc/fstab is bad
mount: /dev/sdb1: can't read superblock
I don't know much about editing things like this so I downloaded storage device manager in hopes of automatically editing my fstab, which no says:
system information.

I'm planning to install Ubuntu on a new PC and use an external dial-up modem for internet connection. The modem I plan to use is the US Robotics USR5637 56K USB Faxmodem, which USR claims is compatible w/Linux kernel 2.4.20:
[code]...
In the modem's Installation Guide, it says: "You need a USB modem driver (CDC ACM) compiled into a Linux kernel 2.4.20 or higher or as a loadable module for your kernel. Installation of the modem under these kernels is fully automatic provided your kernel has the Plug and Play module enabled (default)." So...uh...does Ubuntu meet these specs? Are some version #s of Ubuntu, or its variants, different with regard to these specs? I have the CD of Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition--is this one OK? Should I try a later or earlier version? I'm really looking for a version that will be the least hassle to set up and use; I'll probably have to use Wine, so I can use MS Word 2000. Is there a Ubuntu version best for this too?

I'm trying to restore my laptop through the Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD. A while ago, Windows 7 died. I've tried everything possible to make it work again to no avail. At first I gave up on recovering my files and proceeded to formatting it, but that didn't work either, although it would boot from the CD, it would get stuck. It's as if the HDD couldn't be accessed.
After trying almost every version of Windows available, I decided to give Ubuntu a shot. I have used Ubuntu before and I thought maybe I could use the Live CD to see whether I could access the HD or not and, if not, claim the warranty (I bought the computer 4 months ago). I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 and booted from it and was able to access all my files.
I wanted to move my files to an external HDD through the USB, but I plugged it in and nothing happened, no icon appeared on the desktop or on the Computer directory. I plugged in a normal USB flash drive, and no icon appeared. The funny thing is that the USB led lit up, so I knew it was connected to the computer.
I thought maybe Ubuntu wasn't mounting the drives and that I had to do it manually, so I ran both the lsusb and fdisk -l commands on the terminal with both drives plugged in and neither of them appeared listed. I even opened the message log to see if there was some reaction when I plugged it in, but nothing worked. :S
I restarted the computer and opened the BIOS to see whether the USB drive was enabled, as I had previously disabled some options trying to restore Windows, but the external HDD was being recognized by the computer; on the boot list it showed the name and serial of the drive, so that wasn't it.
I downloaded previous versions of Ubuntu, thinking maybe it had something to do with that (although I know it shouldn't), and the same thing happened: I could access the internal HDD but the external drives weren't being recognized.
I've browsed through the forums, going over the same procedures as other people with the same problem, but nothing works for me and now that I know that my files are safe, I don't want to format it anymore before saving at least the most important ones ><
I think I have 2 options before I run out of ideas. I could use GParted or Partition Editor from the Live CD to resize the partition to make enough space to install Ubuntu on my computer (I was thinking of doing it, anyway) and then fix everything from there instead of from the Live CD (if that changes anything), but I'm afraid that the files in the partition could become corrupted or damaged, and I don't want that. The other option would be to install Ubuntu on the external HDD and boot from it, as it WOULD HAVE to recognize it.
I want to know if there is any way to solve it before resorting to the latter option, as the HDD is not mine and I don't feel right partitioning it.

I have a USB flashdrive and when ever I plug it in it's named CORSAIR. This I like. Now I have some external hard disks that I use for back up. They are USB also, but they tend to get some random name that is mounted to /media like disk-1. How can I name a specific drive to something like "backup" and have it always be recognized that way even across different different Ubuntu boxes.

is it possible that Ubuntu can affect my laptop booting from dvd. I used my external dvd drive to install ubuntu onto my ASUS N10JC, but now when i try to boot from the dvd drive it wont let me? I have boot device #1 set to dvd/cd rom and #2 set to Removable Device, everything else disabled. The drive boots on other computers including a Win7 and a gentoo. Could this be Ubuntu related or just something weird?

I have an 3.5 sata hdd that I use as a external hdd. Everything has been working fine untill last week I pluged it in and nothing will show up I cant get the option to mount it. When I open gparted, the blue LED will blink a few times on the hdd. When I go to change devices in gparted all I get is /dev/sda. If I plug in an thumg drive then I will get the options of /dev/sda and /dev/sdc. So I think that it knows that /sdb is there
ps. my friends thinks it might be a logical error, I'm not sure what that means.

I have two machines sitting in different offices.
Machine A is an ubuntu server box which does not have an external IP address, but is connected to the internet.
Machine B is an ubuntu server box which does have an external IP address (and is connected to the internet).
As it stands, machine B cannot ssh into machine A, only the other way around. What I was wondering is is it possible for machine A to setup some sort of tunnel which machine B can then use to connect back to machine A? I only need SSH access, and I only need it from Machine B to Machine A.

I bought a Philips CDRW/DVD CDD5263 from Amazon for my Acer Aspire One netbook. After plugging in both USB cords to the system, the drive is powered, will respond to the eject button on the drive itself, but I cannot do anything with it from the computer, namely watching DVDs. I have been using Ubuntu for about a year now, but I still don't know much about the inner workings. I would assume this is a driver or compatibility issue, but I thought I'd double check before returning it.

Anyone using a WD 2TB external USB HD? (e.g model number WDBAAU0020HBK-UESN)I am thinking of getting one for use with 64 bit Lucid for archive/backup storage only.from searches I have run the main cause of problems seems to be not applicable to the way I intend to use it i.e running a OS from it or having it mounted on boot up.I Just need it to act like a very big USB stick. Plug it in - transfer data to it (or from it should the need arise), unmount and remove. If I can use it on any of my 3 Lucid systems that will be good but just one will do.Will the NTFS system that this unit is preformatted with be OK? any other possible problems?

here's the situation: My WD external drive got the tables corrupted from being improperly ejected, I plugged it in and after mounting, The entire folder hierarchy was there, but none of the folders showed any data in them, it seemed that they were empty, but disk still registered being 40%full of data)After digging around on google/forums I discovered that what might be wrong was a damaged superblock.I unmounted the external HD and ran gparted to "fix" the problem. It deleted the file names and now after mounting the drive in Nautilus it seems like they have been deleted for real...I'm normally very careful about my data but now I'm afraid that i've lost everything! i'm still hopeful however because running fsck on /dev/sdb1 it still prompts me to delete "orphaned long entries" which i haven't done yet.
