Ubuntu :: Broken Boot Sequence After Replacing An NVidia 6600GT With A Radeon X1300

Apr 27, 2011

Yesterday, after my nVidia 6600GT left its last breath I had to revive somehow my Ubuntu box. So I used the next available card I had at my disposal, a Radeon X1300/1550 (RV516).What I have done so far:

1. Using 2.6.35-48 generic (recovery) bootup, I managed to fire up the failsafeX.

2. I used this guide to purge Nvidia leftovers.

3. I used this RadeonDriver guide to install the OpenSource Radeon driver.

When I try to boot using the normal choice on GRUB (kernel2.6.35-28-generic) , all I get is a console (no X).Right now I am running X through Recovery boot, and my lsmod shows this:

Code:

Module Size Used by
nls_utf8 1069 1
isofs 30022 1

Fedora Hardware :: Replacing Radeon 9550 With Radeon X1300/X1550 - Low FPS

Apr 4, 2010

I replaced an ATI Radeon 9550 with a Radeon X1300/X1550, in hopes of better performance.

My System: P4@3GHz, 1.5Gb RAM, Fedora 12, kernel 2.6.32.10-90.fc12.

Faults: Screen refresh is extremely low. Glxgears outputs 25 FPS. Dragging windows around is sometimes really slow.

What I did so far, in hope of fixing it:

1. Installed 'system-config-display', for providing an xorg.conf
2. Did: yum --enablerepo=rawhide update mesa-dri-drivers-experimental mesa*, fixing this, but to no avail...

I cannot find any errors in the log...I don't know what to do...

I am posting my Xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log and Glxinfo through links to pastebin.com

POST UPDATE:

When running GlxGears, I get a bit of motion, and then the gears freeze for 1 second. And this goes on and on. But...if I move the mouse around, I get 1100FPS!

Now I messed a bit with xorg.conf and the "SWCursor" Option, but the above happens when this option is on "true". On "false" there is no 1100FPS, only the freezing loop...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 Does Not Work With 10.04?

May 23, 2010

I have an ATI radeon x1300 graphics card on my Toshiba Satellite A100 P542 laptop. I am new to ubuntu. On installation, I was pleased with the mac feel as I use mac at my home. I just cant get the card to work. In the hardware options, my card isn't displayed in proprietary thingy.

I later realised that my graphic driver is no longer supported by ATI and there are no official drivers. So I tried all the alternatives available in Ubuntu software centre. I currently have everything related to ATI, fglrx, xorg etc installed. But seems like all these things are of no use, as my graphics driver still isn't recognized and I cant use Compiz fusion. Leave alone compiz fusion I cannot run good quality videos. The screen gets sluggish when I do that.

I have a few bluray quality movies that I would be interested in playing, so hardware video acceleration is a must.

General :: Checking Drivers In Ubuntu 10.10 For Nvidia 6600gt

Mar 6, 2011

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6600 GT] [10de:00f1] (rev a2)
Kernel driver in use: nouveau
Kernel modules: nvidia-96, nouveau, nvidiafb
jbander@ubuntujon:~$

So it looks like I'm using Nouveau driver but I have three drivers loaded Nvidia 96, which I believe is the 96.43.19, nouveau (the one I think it's using) and Is the nvidia fb mean it is a nvidia fbcon and is that another driver or what?

The point is I've been trying to test all the nvidia 6600gt drivers I can find the 173 the 96 and I'm trying to put in 260.19.36 but I haven't been able to get it in yet.and I believe that the nouveau drivers was installed from Ubuntu 10.10 when I put the 6600gt card in the computer. With all those three drivers listed as kernel modules could or do I have a conflict. And the reason I'm doing this is, the drivers that I have now are freezing the system.

Fedora Installation :: NVIDIA Quadro FX And 10 - System Always Locks Up During The 'Anacron' Testing Sequence

Feb 18, 2009

I recently purchased a Quadro FX 4800 and tried to install it on Fedora 10. During the installation, Fedora didn't recognize my new graphics card and began installing the OS in text mode. I stopped the installation and tried to start over, this time I passed the following command: linux resolution=1024x768. I then proceeded with the installation, and again, I was posed with a text mode installation. I continued with the text mode install and when Fedora was done installing, I rebooted and system just locked up.

At this point I was frustrated, so I reinstalled my old 8800 graphics card and started a new install with something that worked in the past. When the install was done, I loaded the latest NVIDIA drivers and the rebooted. I reinstalled my new graphics card (Quadro FX 4800) then powered up my system. I thought everything was good to go and all of a sudden my system flickered and then locked up during the 'Anacron' testing phase. I then rebooted with the "Ctrl+Alt+Del" hotkeys, but my system always locks up during the 'Anacron' testing sequence. I am aware that the Quadro FX 4800 is a few months old, but how can I get it to work in linux? It has gotten so bad, that I had to resort to using MS Vista.

System specs:
Intel Core Duo Quad Core
4 gigs DDR2
SATA RAID 0

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Sequence With Dual Boot And Two Drives?

Dec 10, 2010

recently sent up another computer as follows:Two sata drives. Windows 7 was installed on the first drive(sda)and booted successfully. This drive was disconnected ( I have had some installs where Unbuntu wipes out the existing C drive eventhough I am installing to D) and Ubuntu was installed to the second drive (sdb). At one point I had to rebuild the grup on the Ubuntu drive and was careful to make it installed on the Ubuntu drive. To my surprise when the PC booted up I saw the Grub menu with a menu entry for Windows. The Windows drive was always the primary drive before the Ubuntu install. I was planning on the Windows drive being the boot drive and using a boot manager to determine where to go from there. If I utilize the BIOS boot option (F12) I can boot each drive individually. I cannot in BIOS set a particular drive to boot - just a hard drive. Everything is working I am just curious why the primary drive does not boot first. IN BIOS the Windows drive is a primary SATA with a lower number that the Ubuntu drive which is listed as a secondary drive.

Programming :: Bootstrap Not Starting U-boot In The Normal Boot Sequence

Oct 5, 2010

I am facing a problem with my AT91SAM9260 customized board. Board is almost same as the evaluation kit.

I could download the binaries ( Bootstrap-v1.16, u-boot-1.3.4, linux kernel 2.6.20) successfully to the DATAFLASH/NANDFlash in my board by using atmel SAM-BA tool with usb/serialport/jlink.

Here I describe the problem.

When I power up the board, boot strap is not jumping to U-boot location, in the normal boot sequence and board stuck with bootstrap.

But when I disconnect/connect the JTAG USB cable ( provided with SAM-BA ICE) , it's jumping to u-boot location and booting the board properly. I'm getting the same error in NAND FLASH also.

I have tried one more test case.I copied bootstrap binary at the flash location, [location which is specified for u-boot binary] instead of U-boot.bin (location: 0x8400 in dataflash), I got continous bootstrap debug messages in my console. [ So can I conclude SDRAM doesn't have any problem? ]

Bootstrap code or U-boot code ?

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Desktop Freezes In Boot Sequence

I am attempting to boot Ubuntu off of a USB drive. The USB drive was created via the USB creator in the .iso file dowloaded from Ubuntu. But for some reason when I go into my BIOS and boot from the USB drive, it spits out one line of syslinux and copyright information ending in "et al" and then a flashing cursor but doesn't go any further. I would provide a screenshot but that isnt an option at the moment with not being able to get past the first line of booting. Also, I have never used Ubuntu as this is my first attempt at running it and it is obviously not going the best.

Fedora Hardware :: Switching From Nvidia To Radeon

Jun 24, 2010

I have been running F12 w/ an Nvidia board (GE Force 5200) for some time now. I installed and configured that board as per the instructions on this forum (very good ones too!) and have had no problems, other than it would not connect directly to a digital/HDMI port, nor would it do vdpau, since it was an older card.

But now, I have a Radeon VisionTek 1550, that has dual outputs, one of which is DVI-D, and I have an adapter to HDMI that actually works well.

I have managed to remove most of the nvidia stuff from F12, in particular the kernel module. But I keep finding various libs getting loaded that are NVidia based. In particular, with xbmc it is looking for OpenGL rendering, and finds an NVidia version.

Sorry for the long diatribe, but how to I get rid of all of these references completely, without reinstalling fedora from scratch?

Also, another question about the radeon configuration: how do I enable and configure radeon's theatre mode via xorg.conf? FWIW: if I run aticonfig I get "no card found".

Fedora :: 30 Seconds Of No Activity During Boot Sequence

Nov 22, 2009

I have been enjoying Fedora 11 for sometime, and decided to try Fedora 12. All in all it is working, but the boot sequence seemed much slower. I decided to use bootchart to examine the boot process on my old F11 and new F12 installations. The result show F11 booting in ~34 seconds, and F12 booting in ~57 seconds. Interestingly, the first 30 seconds show that only kthreadd, khelper, and ata/0 are running. CPU and disk utilization are both zero during this 30 seconds span, then all of a sudden everything starts loading, CPU and Disk utilization spike up, and ~23 seconds later I get to the login screen. I sent an email to Harald Hoyer about this, and to my surprise he was kind enough to respond. He suggested I check the BIOS to make sure I had disabled the floppy drive, which I did. The problem persists, so I was wondering if anyone here was having a similar issue and if so how they have dealt with it. I have blacklisted the floppy module (just to make sure)

Hardware :: Gigabyte MOBO Boot Sequence ?

Jan 25, 2011

I would like to know as to how to save a boot order sequence...In my desktop PC I have a gigabyte MOBO housing Pentium Dual Core processor...

Whenever I have to boot from an external USB , I have to press del at boot , go into CMOS features and change the Order of Booting 1-DVD 2 USB-FDD 3. USB-HDD 4. Local Hard Disk

The problem is that everytime I have to repeat the above to boot from USB...I am also confused between USB - HDD and USB - FDD...Some utils partition and use the USB like a HDD while it is not the case with FDD I guess

How do you freeze the boot order so that on inserting any USB / External HDD at boot , the system should give it the priority over local hard disk..

Also in Giga MOBO I noticed that there is no "generic USB" mentioned in BIOS...It lists the USB device by name say "Kingston Data Traveler " "Sandisk Micro" etc ....

What should I do to make the boot order permanent?

Ubuntu :: Video Card Driver Destroying Boot Progress Sequence?

I have a full install on a dedicated partition. And the problem persists. I have tacked it down to the driver for my video card [nVidia 9600m GS]. When I disable the driver, it somewhat returns to normal [it works fine on shut down, but boot up is still buggy]. However, this makes Docky complain about compositing [it will still work, but there's a black void around it] not being enabled. I also assume that lacking the driver will cause problems if I try to do anything 3D.

Debian Hardware :: NVidia Went To Black Screen - How To Install Radeon

Aug 14, 2010

My KT4AV-based PC has burned up two GEForce 6200 cards, so I decided to try an AGP bus Radeon HD 3650.At the same time as the nVidia card went "black screen" (no video at all, not even text) my CMOS battery died.I put in a new CMOS battery and fixed up the CMOS settings as well as I can.I put in an old Trident TVGA96PCI cardnd got as far as terminal mode, but even with the xserver-xorg-video-tridentdriver already n the system, I couldn't get the display manager to run. I gave up on the Trident card becauseold and bought a new Radeon HD 3650 card and changed the display bus from PCI toAGP in the CMOS settings.

The Radeon card now also gets me only to terminal mode.tried coaxing the system by renaming xorg.conf, but that didn't help - rebooting still gets me nowhere,no new xorg.conf file. The renamed one is still configured for the nVidia card. The xserver-xorg-video-radeon driveris also present, as "sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-radeon" tells me it's already the latest version.I'm presently stuck without direct network support, as the ethernet connection hangs the computer during rebootthe message, "ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready." If I unplug the ethernet cablefor starting successfully, when I plug it back in while I'm at the command prompt, I get a message to the effectthat eth0 up and running,"ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready" messageappears again and the sytem again freezes.I have successfully pinged this PC from another on the network, but not while it's hung up at the above-quotedmessage. In that case, it's "unavailable."How do I purge the system of the nVidia stuff and replace it with an approporiate Radeon driver ?
