Ubuntu :: Apt-get Update On Headers ?

Feb 8, 2011

Mostly just curious since everything works but in the essence of learning I'd like to know what this means.

Code:

The following packages have been kept back: linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.

It is easy to see what is held back, so the question is why? I'm running Linux Mint 10 Gnome edition.

Code:

Linux 2.6.35-22-generic #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:36:48 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

Ubuntu Installation :: System Updater Forget To Update Kernel Headers

Dec 22, 2010

i A linux-headers-2.6.35-22
i A linux-headers-2.6.35-22-generic
i A linux-image-2.6.35-22-generic

But after automatic update to 2.6.35-23 updater install just linux-image-2.6.35-23-generic without headers. In result kernel modules of nVidia driver not compiled and next boot X server can not start.

Now I can install 2.6.35-24 image and headers by hands, but how to explain updater not forget to update headers next time and why this problem occurs?

CentOS 5 :: Can't Install Kernel-headers Glibc And Glibc-headers?

Yesterday, I think I did something stupid: I removed kernel-headers, gcc, glibc-devel and glibc-headers. My box is a CentOS 5.4 webserver (it has loads of packages installed, but that was done through Virtualmin config, so it's quite coherent all in all). The thing is that now I need to reinstall at least the headers and glibc, but hey! this is what I get :

Software :: Which Headers Are "The Headers"?

Jun 14, 2010

been a programmer for a while; on windows mostly but I'm starting to learn all that I can about linux software.I've picked up a funky little NAS which has ssh access to its (i believe uLinux) environment. I've also managed to find a compiler for it (gcc compiled for ARM - GNU/Linux).The plot thickens.I've had some headaches but I've now managed to compile Apache2 without DSO support... so far so good.In getting this far I've been told by a number of people i will need "the headers" specific to the device (the NAS didn't come with source code).

Since Apache 2 (without DSO) compiled fine I know i definitely have some headers. But DSO won't build with errors that lead me to believe it may be a header issue.The question:So i have some headers which educated guess work suggests to me that these are the headers for the std c/c++ libraries.finding "the headers" to know what they are the headers for

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Compositing With Docky, No Window Headers?

Apr 30, 2010

I am a somewhat new user to Ubuntu, and I just upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. I did not do a clean install, just an upgrade by running "update-manager -d". Once I upgraded, lots of problems started happening:

- I booted up, and nothing came up but text like in a command prompt; not a splash screen. Is that correct? - When I logged in, none of my windows had tops (i.e. Window Title, Buttons for minimize, maximize, and close). I changed the theme and turned on the max graphical effects, and that fixed it. (by the way, I know my graphics card can handle it because that is how it was set up on 9.10)

- ...Then, I took off the bottom panel and added Docky. Once I added my icons to it, I restarted, and then the window headers were once again gone, and Docky popped up a message in the top right saying it needed Composite support turned on (i.e. Metacity or Compiz). I turned it on in Metacity (I also have Compiz installed), but nothing changed. So now I have no tops to my windows and have to resort to ALT+F4 to close windows, etc, and I have a huge black rectangle taking up the lower 1/4 of my screen that is just black, with Docky in it...it isn't just a border around it like some other posts have said, but rather takes up almost half my screen.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - Kernel Upgraded - But Won't Install Headers ?

Aug 23, 2010

I'd like to upgrade a live ISO file before burning a new CD.

So, following the instructions in "How to Customise the Ubuntu Desktop CD", I chrooted to the squashfs and ran "apt-get update/upgrade/dist-upgrade", expecting apt-get to upgrade the chroot kernel... only to find out that apparently, even when being chrooted, this command upgrades the actual kernel. I guess it makes sense, but I was under the - wrong - impression that chroot would build a filesystem totally isolated from the underneath host.

So I rebooted to use this new kernel:

Next, since the Nouveau video driver requires the kernel header files, I ran the following:

Code:

I don't understand why apt-get upgrades the kernel but won't install its header files.

My friend Google brings up examples with both these lines one after another in script files, just like Im doing. Except for me it doesnt appear to work.

Where am I making my beginners mistake in not understanding how this works ?

Ubuntu Installation :: System-Headers Not Updating / Solve This?

Nov 24, 2010

I am running 32 bit 2.6.32-26-generic-pae #47-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 17 16:14:46 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

Every time Update Manager updates the Kernel, the kernel and it's associated source code is upgraded, but the LINUX-HEADERS for the associated kernel are not updated.

This is a problem because without the updated linux-headers, my Nvidia drivers fail to recompile and load. A PIA. I then have to go to Synaptic Package Manager, find the appropriate linux-headers for the new kernel version, install it, reboot, and then Nvidia drivers load and function again.

Something is obviously messed up here. I likely caused the problem thus:

On first install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on this machine, it installed with the generic kernel. It saw/found the Nvidia drivers and loaded them OK (I may have had to do some Nvidia installs via Synaptic; I don't recall). My machine has more than 4GB ram, and I noticed it was not using nearly all of it. I researched and found the solution was to switch to the PAE kernel, which I did. Ever since then at every kernel upgrade, the Linux-headers fail to update, and have to be updated manually for Nvidia to function.

Now that I know what the issue is, it's not a big deal. However, Update Manager should know I need the Linux-Headers and upgrade them at every kernel update. How can I insure this happens auto-magically like the rest of this fine and beautiful KickAss OS?

We have an Ubuntu server running on Amazon EC2, hosting a website. We also have postfix, in order to send mail (receiving mail is done by another server which is specified in our MX records). My problem is that the internal hostname of the machine ("domU-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.internal") appears in some "Received:" headers in the emails sent. Is that normal? It seems rather peculiar to me, and I'm thinking some e-mail systems might consider it spam because of this. GMail doesn't consider it spam, but not all systems are as smart as GMail

Ubuntu Networking :: Kernel Headers In Order To Install NIC Driver?

Jul 8, 2011

I am running Ubuntu 11.04 with a Dlink DGE-530T NIC. My browsing in Ubuntu on ALL browsers is horribly slow. It works perfectly fine on windows and other PCs on the LAN. So I know for sure my router and my internet line is fine.I figured it could be a problem with my NIC drivers and decided to install the drivers from the CD. (All this while it was running on the default drivers that ship with Ubuntu). I'm trying to install the sk98lin drivers and my understanding of the kernel so far is still very weak. When I try to run the install.sh script it gives me an error saying :

Code:
Create tmp dir (/tmp/Sk98IknhDHEiLKnkWUSoYMTLi) [ OK ]
Check user id (0) [ OK ]
Check kernel version (2.6.38-8-generic) [ OK ]
Check kernel symbol file (/proc/kallsyms) [ OK ]
Check kernel type (SMP) [ OK ]
Check number of CPUs (2)

But the installation script is still not able to find it. I tried searching a few threads on google but wasn't able to make too much sense of whats going on because of my lack of understanding of the linux kernel.
