Ubuntu / Apple :: Server 11.04 Don't Reboot On Macmini 3.1
May 21, 2011
i've installed 11.04 server on my macmini 3.1 (late 2009) from cd, and it is the only system isntalled (no os x, no windows). It works very well, even netatalk. The problem is, if i reboot the computer ubuntu doesn't start and i've got the blinking folder with question mark after ~30 seconds.

I've got a macmini with the Intel CPU and every time I install Crunchbang or Debian I get a folder with a question mark. But the problem goes away when I install Ubuntu/Linux Mint. I have tried to see if I might have set my partitions wrong so I installed Linux Mint then installed crunchbang and just used those partitions and that didn't help also.
The only way I can get around this problem is to have a Linux Mint cd in my drive then select boot from hard drive. Now this is not something I want to keep on doing then though I keep my computer on for as long as possible.
Putting OSX on a smaller partition is something I also don't want to do since I have a lot of files and only a 120G hard drive I would prefer to just have Linux on.

i got 2 live cds with 5 distros on each. i decided to test the distros on my macbook but I couldn't boot from the Live CD using reboot and holding down "c", so I selected the Live CD as my startup disk. so i experimented with fedora, tested mint, and played with pradus.

If I make a cronjob to reboot a server every 3 days at like 2am? This way it will free up ram, etc and cause less problems right? I know a guy that is doing this, and I'm trying to convince him otherwise.

I really don't know what to make of this. I have just installed Lucid Server onto my first generation Mac G5 (1.6 uni). The install went fine & the system rebooted...
The first problem:
Fatal errors encountered installing thermal control. All the windfarm modules failed, but judging by the fact the mac doesn't sound like a jet engine, thermal control /is/ working.
The second problem:
After this, it brings up the splash screen & then the console goes dead. No keyboard, no display, no nothing; it looks like the system has hung. But... SSH is working. The system is up and as responsive as it should be!
I've tried adding video=ofonly to yaboot.conf and zapping the pram, but it made no change.

I have installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 on a Dell pc without issue, but on reboot or startup from being off it doesn't load the os. It flashes error: no such disk then leaves me a blank screen with a flashing cursor. For some reason it's not seeing the drive.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu Server 10.04 on a PPC G4 PowerMac.
It took a while, but finally I managed to get through the installation.
Unfortunately, after choosing Ubuntu from the yaboot menu at startup, it takes a moment and then displays a kernel panic about not founding /sbin/init .
Well, /sbin/init is there for sure (I've checked again, using the CD).

I recently updated my server from 9.04 to 10.04.1Previously, my two macs running snow leopard were able to connect to the server and print with no problem. Now they won't print. I can print a test page through CUPS web interface and my Ubuntu 10.04.1 laptop will print to the server.I noticed a difference in Gutenprint that went from v5.2.3 to v5.2.5. At least that was the difference I saw between what the CUPS web interface was showing and what driver I had to choose from when adding a printer on the mac said. I updated the gutenprint drivers to 5.2.5 on the mac.I've uninstalled CUPS 1.4.3, reinstalled it, deleted the printer, added it again. This is the error I get in the mac when I try to print:Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME)The print job says its printing, never does, and eventually shows its paused

Neither Ubuntu's Unity or KDE respond to the function keys on a regular Apple USB keyboard. I can plug in a non-Apple keyboard and they work just fine. What needs to be changed or configure so that F1 and company on the Apple keyboard work as on other keyboards?

I had recently setup an OpenVPN server on x64 10.04 via the guide found at: [url]
Everything was working perfectly, all clients were able to connect etc.
Today I needed to reboot for a completely unrelated issue - only to find that upon logging in, openVPN was no longer running.
When I tried to execute 'sudo /etc/init.d/openvpn start' I'm presented with an interesting message...
This *used* to say Server. I've double checked all the configs and scripts used in the config and they all check out OK. I purged and reinstalled openVPN to no avail...

I installed 11.04 server and had samba share /tmp (as advised by the server pdf doc) shared to my windows 7 laptop, which was all well and good, so copied some files to it and rebooted the server, and they had been removed.i guess i shouldnt have put anything in /tmp as i presume this is cleared on reboot, so why did the documentation advise to create /tmp share?

This morning I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and I got it connected through Blueman. It works like a charm, but I have on problem;
When I log out I can log back in by typing in my password. However, when I restart the computer it seems that bluetooth is not loaded yet and I cannot enter my password. So I have to log in using my wired keyboard, and then disconnect & re-connect to my wireless keyboard using blueman before I am able to use the wireless keyboard.
Is there any way that I can already auto-load bluetooth and connect to my keyboard before I log in?

At first I tried the using the CDROM to install the server but around 8% through it could not talk to the CDROM anymore. I did attempt this a few times including re-seat the CDROM and it stopped at the same point every time. I then used the Mini install and that worked. However, after I rebooted I received the this error.
Gave up waiting for root Common problems:
Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
Check rootdelay
Check root
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/bfaafj88-83ce-4dd2-8c6f-26o9a869eaea does not exists Dropping into shell:
(initranfs)
I then reboot from this point by issuing the reboot command and can then go into the rescue login with networking. I did select reconfigure GRUB and rebooted but same error as above.
System is an old Dell Poweredge 1550
Ubuntu = 9.10 server

Every time I reboot my server, it no longer connects to the internet. It is dual-homed with an internal and an external interface. Both come up. The internal connection works fine. Nothing happens on the external interface. Ifconfig shows that both interfaces are setup correctly. My iptables settings are properly restored. Forwarding is automatically enabled. For some reason packets do not go anywhere on the external interface. This has been true ever since the upgrade to jaunty I think (now running lucid).
Once I restart the external interface it works perfectly (eg ifdown eth1; ifup eth1 or /etc/init.d/networking restart). The problem only occurs after a reboot and only occurs on the external interface.
Here's my /etc/network/interfaces file:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static

Ok so I followed the instructions here [url] and this works great for the install however if the machine is rebooted the VMWare server refuses to start back up stating that it knows that its installed but it was not installed with the right installer.
This is on a Dell Server I can't remember the model right now but its got Dual PIII in it. I'm running Ubuntu Server 32bit 10.10 on the box as well. Thank you in advance for your assistance with this. Once I get this first server figured out I'll get my other one fired back up.

I'm writing you to ask some help with administrating a server remotely.
I have a machine I use remotely when I have to travel, some time for quite long periods like from one to three months.
Last time it happened to me that after upgrading I send the reboot command
and the machine didn't turn down, so I couldn't be able to access it.
My question is: how can I avoid such situations?
Is there any best practice to follow?

I have an Apple TV onto which I installed Ubuntu Karmic. It works great save a small problem with SSH.The openssh-server package is installed and configured and can be started with sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start fine. When the machine is rebooted, however, it never starts itself up as it should.
rcconf reports that SSH is enabled for autostart on boot. Grepping /var/log/syslog, /var/log/messages, and /var/log/dmesg for 'ssh' yields no results. I removed and readded ssh with the following: sudo update-rc.d ssh start 40 2 3 4 5 . stop 19 0 1 6 .. Does anyone know what could be causing this to not start up properly?

I have a mac G4 Gigabit Ethernet, with 400MHz processor. I was running the Hardy version of Ubuntu Server last year, although I was booting from the onboard ATA controller. I just added a 2-port Sonnet SATA card and a single 250G SATA drive, and removed all the ATA gear. I installed 10.04 Server, and via guided partitioning wiped the 250G SATA drive, and installed yaboot. When I try to boot from the 250G SATA it hangs up at the "Mac Smiley <-> ?" Icon after the second stage bootstrap prompt, and then cycles.
I looked at some other threads, in fact read this about 4 times and got some good hints: [URL]. I can boot with a live 10.04 desktop CD, and mount the linux partition and look at yaboot.conf:
Code:
fdisk -l
/dev/sda
# type name length base ( size ) system
/dev/sda1 Apple_partition_map Apple 63 @ 1 ( 31.5k) Partition map
/dev/sda2 Apple_Bootstrap untitled 2048 @ 2048 ( 1.0M) NewWorld
bootblock .....
Then I did:
Code:
sudo mkdir /mnt/linux
mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/linux .....
I also tried to get some details on my PCI SATA card via "lspci". How to get this to boot? I haven't quite given up on this older G4 box. It will make a great SSH server and home automation box if I can just smoove out this wrinkle.

service httpd start
It starts up just fine!

I've been having issues with my ubuntu server (10.04 LTS) lately. Every once in a while, anywhere from 3 days to a month or more, the server will just disappear from the network. All manner of trying to reach it from the outside fails, even from the LAN. Since it's headless, this is kind of problematic. After a hard power down or reboot, the server will always come back online, but this is very annoying for a remotely administered server.
What should I look for when trying to determine why the server keeps going offline? I can't tell if there are any other issues like a hard lockup or anything, just that it is not on the network anymore when this happens.

I'm a light linux user over the last couple of years and I decided to built a HTPC/NAS device.
Setup:
40gb ide -> usb boot drive
3x2tb sata (4k Sector) drives
I've got another 2tb identical drive but it's holding data that is going to be copied to the raid after it's up and running and then be 'grown' into the raid array to yield a final 5+tb array. I tried doing a disk util raid array and it ended up failing after reboot due to it using the /dev/sd* designations and they swapped. I have no idea how to do the UUID version, my googlefu and practical guide to ubuntu. So I decided to do it manually in order to also fix the sector issue as disk util wasn't formatting them correctly and once formatted wouldn't let me create a raid array from the discs.

My problem now is that lsyncd does not automatically start if the server reboots. I need lsyncd to start automatically also using the --delay 5 option.
I've had trouble finding any info on this other that some Japanese sites (I cant read japanese) using chkconfig, although it didn't work as I think chkconfig is depreciated anyway.
