I was trying to reformat my Seagate external hard drive and I selected "free Space," in disk utility not realizing that the computer would no longer recognize the device. I'm trying to install Snow Leopard on it so now how do I format it now to the GUID format? I luckily backed up the entire contents of the hard drive (The essential files on it), but what do I do now that the computer doesen't recognize it!?
View 9 RepliesI recently reformatted my external hard drive. Somewhere along the way I think my fstab got messed up because now my hard drive won't mount. Instead I get the following error:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
If I mount it through Gparted, it mounts just fine.

I have been a Linux user for about 6 years now, and recently switched to Fedora just to try something new. I used Ubuntu for the majority of the time so I am somewhat familiar with the command line, but seem to be having trouble with my external HDD. Ubuntu automounted it no problem. Fedora doesn't seem to like to do that. I tried searching and I did what almost every thread insisted upon; which is mount /dev/sdb(that is what dmesg said) but it says already mounted or /mnt/busy. So this is the extent of my Terminal experience with mounting an external drive, and I am completely dumbfounded as to why it simply won't mount. I am liking Fedora so far and so long as there is a remedy for this I don't plan on going back.

It recognized my windows partition fine and I was able to get all my files off of that, but the majority of my stuff is on the ext4 partition that I have on it. Does anyone know how to access the ubuntu partition of this hard drive from my mac?

If I go "places" "computer" I can see the drive (simply entitled USB Drive) but if I try to open it it says "cannot mount the drive". If I right click and select "Mount Volume" I get Nothing. How can I get this to auto mount like other usb drives? I am using Hardy on a Compaq Laptop.

Windows is no help at all... I tried that out of desparation.

My programming instructor for school told us that it would be in our best interest of the course to grab a linux distro and install it on our computers. (Don't ask me why, i dont know)ANYWAY, i am trying to get debian to install on my external USB 1.5TB Seagate HDD Drive. After learning a lot about Murphy's Law, i had to fix my MBR for windows (the windows installation is located on my internal SATA 1.5TB Seagate Drive) because GRUB wouldnt boot to windows unless i had my external plugged in.
So, the natural solution to me was to fix the MBR, unplug the internal, then re-install on my external, it worked. Well to my surprise, this cloud i was on... wasn't cloud 9. NOW, Debian will boot if i have the external plugged in and windows will boot if i have the internal plugged in. The Problem is, when i have both plugged in and my external set as the boot drive i get this weird error and it will not let me boot linux.Now, i have searched for a fix.. But the ones i have tried so far haven't worked or i wasn't sure how to use those fixes(because im new).The error went as follows:/bin/sh can't access tty; job control mode offthen i get a initramfs command line. (I think thats proper terminology)The temporary fix i have going right now is i have my computer open and the SATA cable unplugged so i can boot to Debian.

Short version: How do I reformat an external hard-drive (read-only, NFTS) so that I can rw to it.
Long version: I had a self-built Ubuntu desktop that is now dead. I have pulled out the hard-drives and have bought one of the connector's to convert the SATA cable to USB so I can put the data on my Mac. Unfortunately, my Mac is not able to read the hard-drive for some reason... So, I've decided to boot my old Ubuntu laptop to pull the files from the SATA drive to an external drive then hopefully connect that external drive to transfer the files to the Mac. The external drive is currently formatted as NFTS and I'm unable to reformat it with gparted--I'm guessing that's because it's read-only mode...?

I was previously on Windows 7 and then had to get a new hard drive as my old one died on me. As I had a Ubuntu disc lying around, I decided to install it onto this computer, but honestly, I can't stand the OS and can't do anything that I'm used to doing (and doing it slower when in Linux). My question is, how do I completely reformat this hard drive / how do I install WIndows onto this computer, when my BIOS isn't letting me edit it. The Windows disc doesn't try to load, no matter what I try to do to it.

I have a little experience using Ubuntu with VMWare Fusion on my Mac, but that is about it. My girlfriend is running Windows Vista on an HP Pavilion tx 2000 laptop and she has been having all sorts of trouble with it. Needless to say Windows is eating the computer from the inside out so I recommended that she use Ubuntu, which means that I have to set everything up for her... So my question is how do I go about reformatting the entire hard drive and installing Ubuntu (or another Linux based OS recommended)?

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation

If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
I have 350GB external Western Digital USB hard Drive.When I try to remove it from the system by executing Safely Remove Drive menu the fedora 15 system gets stuck.The processor starts giving a hum sound and it goes on even if it is left for half an hour in the stuck state.The Mouse is not working and everything is halted.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've recently bought the "new" Macbook from Apple. It obviously came with OSX preinstalled. And I'm obviously not satisfied with the way it works, I also need a FAT32 partition so I can share my files between all three OS's. Tricky business. And I thought later on I might try and create me a nice LFS system to learn about Linux and show of to my mates. But doesn't a single hard drive only support up to 4 partitions? So off I went and got Ubuntu running besides Mac. It wasnt recognized by neither the default boot-loader nor rEFIt straight away. I had to hold alt to come up with the special BIOS or something every time I needed to use Ubuntu (always).
I got up to a point where I could run Ubuntu with wireless, sound and pretty much everything working. Until the kernel updates were installed. Somehow I (or maybe it) managed to screw up and booting had become impossible, for it would crash halfway through with kernel errors and other undefined weirdnesses. Meanwhile I had tried installing Windows 7 on a different partition. Which I found to be catastrophic also. I was forced to put up with OSX, which in my opinion is fine at what it does but it doesn't do very much for me. After a couple of tries I had to give up on fiddling with Ubuntu for I needed Windows 7 to run software for school. So my current partition layout looks like this......
I'm on the latest Ubuntu OS on my netbook trying to make a USB Startup Disk. I have a 1GB USB and a 500GB hard drive plugged in to then netbook. I run the USB Startup Disk program, and it tells me I need to format the USB drive. Okay, so I press format, only to realize that I'm formatting the 500GB hard drive.However, when I pressed format it give me an error saying the disk could not be mounted. I did something on Disk Utility and now I have a FAT32 system on the hard drive with nothing in it. Now my ultimate question is, am I able to recover the data that was on the hard drive?The hard drive was formatted in HFS+, it was a Mac-formatted hard drive. Will I need to use a Mac in order to try to restore my files?

For some reason, at the disk preparation from my live PowerPC Ubuntu install, the entire bar is green with only 8kb of (white) free space. I want to partition the computer to add Ubuntu to it, but I don't want to risk partitioning my hard drive and losing any data affiliated with the current o/s installed on it (OS X Leopard). What is the best way to go about doing this? A manual partition?
