Ubuntu / Apple :: Sound On MacBook6,1 (10.04)
May 18, 2010
I've been through installing alsa, etc. Followed the documentation, still nothing. Is there any way of getting the sound to work? If not the speakers, then even the headphones?

The sound stopped working on my Macbook Pro 1,1. It was working fine before, and I can't think of any changes I made that would make it stop working. I know it's not a hardware problem because the Apple sound plays when I turn on the computer. Everything is unmuted in ALSA Mixer. None of the hardware options in Sound Preferences produce sound. Plugging in headphones or speakers does not solve the problem. I'm using 10.10.One curiosity: Whenever I do something that would normally cause sound to play, the optical audio red light in the headphone jack turns on, but no sound plays.

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 in MBP that I bought a month ago. I found it easier to install it using the bootcamp through OSX. Ubuntu works well. Nearly everything worked out of the box except the brightness keys and the sound/microphone. I am able to adjust the sound level using the keyboard keys (F10 - F12). However there is no sound. Skype also does not detect a microphone. I searched on the web and found the following instructions:
[URL]
They did not work either.

I've been using the instructions on the Wiki to compile audio drivers for the Macbook Pro 5,3, and it has worked for a while. But I tried doing the same thing with kernels 2.6.31-17 and 2.6.31-18, but it seems to have no effect: alsamixer only shows one channel (Master) which does nothing, just like a fresh install. Does anyone have updated instructions for these kernels?

When I installed I noticed no sound was emanating from my computer and a red light coming out the headphone jack. s there any reason why there wouldn't be any working sound? Everything else seems to be working fine. I installed the additional drivers but the only ones listed were graphics and wireless.

Well, I can't get audio on an iMac 27" at 3.06 GHz with Ubuntu 10.04. I have FGLRX ATI/AMD driver, but that's just for 2560x1440 display res. and don't give audio.

First macbook. I've managed to get everything I really need running except sound. I'm 5-year ubuntu user so if anyone asks for any system info I'll probably be able to manage it. This is the only sound-related entry I could find in lspci.

I installed ubuntu 10.10 in my macbook white 7,1 and as always I am impressed with the support of most of the hardware. Almost everything works, but the sound and the brightness control do not. The sound one is the one that I am more concerned about. I tried to solve it using the documentation for MacBook Pro 7,1 Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) but the solution did not work.

I have a MacBook Pro 8,3 w/ Natty installed on it and noticed on the wiki [URL]... it says sound only comes out of the right speaker. I just want to share that I got stereo sound on my machine by adding `options snd-hda-intel model=mbp55' to the end of `/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf' and rebooting. I didn't see a solution anywhere else. I haven't done extensive testing, I just know that now I have sound coming out both speakers (and headphone speakers) at balanced volume levels.

I have no sound on my macbook pro 17", intel core. I have searched and searched and have not found a solution. I have never yet had sound since I installed ubuntu. I am using 11.04 now.So far, I have edited the document /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and added this line:options snd-hda-intel model=mbp55, which did nothing. Also ALSAmixer has all the channels turned up all the way except for S/PDIFI don't think it is a hardware problem because when I play an MP3 file in VLC, in the visualization that would normally show the ups and downs of the sound playback, I get a flat line (not sure if that makes sense).

I manged to have it working fine in Ubuntu 9.04 but the sound settings in gnome have changed too much and I can no longer reconfigure the sound system to work as before. For now I can only hear music through the internal speaker(s) while previously with 9.04 I was able to use the built-in audio jack and use my external speakers. What was even better was that I was able to toggle the between the built-in speakers and the external speakers by plugin/unplugin the speakers jack. Today all of this nice features are gone. What's the proper way for configuring sound with pulseaudio? Should I disable pulseaudio?

I have been using the information provided here: [URL] to fix some issues after installation of Karmic 64-bit on a MBP 5,5. The solutions for wireless and sound work, but not together - one seems to break the other. Here is what I did:
1. Followed directions for fixing wireless here: [URL] (AirPort) This works fine.
2. Followed directions for fixing sound, which seems to update the kernel, here: [URL] Sound This also works, but then wireless does not work.
If I boot into the older kernel version, I have wireless again, but no sound. If I boot into the newer kernel and try to use the wireless solution above its says I already have that package installed - yet no go with wireless.

System: MacBookPro5,3 with ubuntu 9.10
kernel: Linux ubuntu 2.6.31-19-generic-pae
soundchip: nVidia Corporation MCP79 High Definition Audio (rev b1), in windows it reports: Cirrus Logic CS4206A (AB 75). Cirrus Logic now is part of nvidia.
I've added ppa mactel repository. and tried the procedure described at:
[url]
It still doesn't work. By compiling from alsa from source, it seems worse, the sound preference even couldn't pick up device. Also in current /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/HD-Audio-Models.txt.gz. I could not find the module name for this nvidia or CirrusLogic device.

One of the left speaker on my macbook 2,1 has no sound. The channel is not muted in alsamixer. If you go into sound preferences and change the card to a surround 4.0. The both the front and rear right speakers work. Front is higher sound (tweeter) rear is the lower sounds. (mid-sub) however on the left side the left front does nothing. to the naked ear you can tell not as much sound is coming out of the left side. one speaker is not functioning. is there a fix for this?

I recently got Ubuntu running on my iMac 20" version 9,1. In the beginning Ubuntu recognized my ALC889A sound card yet I couldn't get my audio to work, however it worked with headphones. Then trying to fix this I updated my kernel and rebooted. Now Ubuntu doesn't even recognize my sound card and I don't get audio on my computer.

I've been troubleshooting the Audio for my iMac for the past few weeks (ugh) and right now I'm working through this: [URL}...When I use
configure --with-cards=hda-intel It tells me:
Code:
The file /lib/modules/2.6.35-28-generic/build/include/linux/autoconf.h does not exist. install the package with full kernel sources for your distrubution or use --with-kernel=dir option to specifiy another directory with kernel sources (default is /lib/modules/2.6.35-28-generic/build). When I searched for how to get kernel source I got this:

I set up Ubuntu on an old iBook G4, planning to use it as a front end to my main box. Installed 10.04 no problem, and from there, used Software Center to install MythTV Front end. Have done the same thing on a netbook, no problem.
However, on this PPC Mac, the front end works fine, navigation, menus, etc, until I try to play a recorded programme - the screen is blank, and I just get white noise from the speakers.
(BTW am trying Ubuntu as I don't have a Mac OS new enough to get any of the current Mac MythFrontEnd builds working)

I was curious if anyone has dual booted Ubuntu on this model iMac, (Mid 2011 with 4gb ram, 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 processor, the current model in the apple store).
When I dual booted on my MacBook I came across a plethora of problems, such as the sound not working properly or the wireless card not being supported.
Does anyone know if these same problems exist for the iMac or is everything business as usual?

I just updated to 2.6.33 kernel and I am using an Intel Mac with ubuntu 9.10 running native. I upgraded because the new kernel has sound working for the imac (at least through headphones). Once the kernel was updated to 2.6.33 the proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver which I had activated through systems -> administration -> hardware drivers is now inactive and will not work. systems -> administration -> hardware drivers says to look in /var/log/jockey.log, here is the last part of that file [URL]. PLEASE HELP OUT. I hate using the Mac os on the other partition.

I have Karmic Koala 9.10 working (near) perfectly on my iMac7,1, as identified by
Code:
NOTE: See below for Lucid 10.04 update to these instructions
IMPORTANT: You need to complete the installation procedure while connected to internet via the WIRED network. Then you can enable the wireless by installing the restricted drivers, after the install is complete. Also the fglrx ATI Video driver is effortlessly installed via Menu > System > Administration > Hardware Drivers
The sound card gave me some trouble, as it is an Intel HDA Model, reported as 'Codec: Realtek ALC889A' by
Code:
It shows up in lspci as:
Code:
It sounded rather tinny at first, when I tried mbp3 and other model names. Then I added the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf :
Code:
After reboot, my sound is full and can be put much louder than before. Jack detection works. Some people might have to leave out the power saving options. See below.
dmesg reports:
Code:
Sources consulted are mostly the kernel documentation ( Enter into the terminal: sudo apt-get install linux-doc
The relevant info can be found in HD-Audio-Models.txt.gz and HD-Audio.txt.gz in /usr/share/doc/linux-doc/sound/alsa )

This morning I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and I got it connected through Blueman. It works like a charm, but I have on problem;
When I log out I can log back in by typing in my password. However, when I restart the computer it seems that bluetooth is not loaded yet and I cannot enter my password. So I have to log in using my wired keyboard, and then disconnect & re-connect to my wireless keyboard using blueman before I am able to use the wireless keyboard.
Is there any way that I can already auto-load bluetooth and connect to my keyboard before I log in?
