Ubuntu / Apple :: Starting Back Up Into OS X Snow Leopard?

May 29, 2010

I think I may have hastily installed Ubuntu on sister's Intel iMac. I'm not much of a techie and she'd asked me to make a dual boot system. I burned the ISO file and ran Boot Camp on her iMac and seemingly everything went through properly. However, upon restarting the system, I get a DOS-like page showing the boot options. Switching to 64-bit OS X resulted in a failed boot as did the option for 32-bit OS X. I'm in a bind as she needs to get back into OS X to work on her project.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Can't Boot Into Snow Leopard Install Disc

Jan 7, 2011

I did a full install of Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro (7,1) and I am trying to boot into the OS X disc but the screen always pulls up the Apple logo and loading circle and then greys out and tells me to turn the machine off.

I cannot get into disc utility or anything. It almost seems like the computer doesn't know how to handle the disc. I did not use Refit and the only change I made to the boot loader was blessing the ubuntu partition.

Ubuntu / Apple :: "better" Right Now, The Current Kernel Or The Snow Leopard One?

Jan 8, 2011

i think its XNU "darwin" that the macs use correct? is there even a way to determine which is better? i mean obviously the linux kernel gets updated more often so that would lead me to believe - and the fact they're both based roughly on the same unix architecture.

also, who is it thats doing the linux kernel updating? when we see all the distros getting the linux kernel update to 2.56 or whatever across all of them - whos doing that? is it Linus??

Ubuntu / Apple :: Single Boot On Macbook Pro ?

Jun 16, 2010

I've recently wiped by hard drive of mac osx and installed ubuntu. My problem is that i have no proprietary drivers and i cant get internet (wired and wireless) to work. I was wondering if this problem could be due to the fact that i dont have drivers for my ethernet.

I also had a slight problem when installed ubuntu. The install itself when through fine, but after completion, i received a prompt saying that I needed to restart. after clicking ok to restart, i received a string of error, and my cd ejected. when i retstarted after that, ubuntu loaded fine, but no wired or wireless internet for me.

I've reinstalled a few times and i have the same problem. Everyone i talk to says its strange that ethernet doesnt work.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Single Hard Drive Only Support Up To 4 Partitions?

Jan 9, 2010

I've recently bought the "new" Macbook from Apple. It obviously came with OSX preinstalled. And I'm obviously not satisfied with the way it works, I also need a FAT32 partition so I can share my files between all three OS's. Tricky business. And I thought later on I might try and create me a nice LFS system to learn about Linux and show of to my mates. But doesn't a single hard drive only support up to 4 partitions? So off I went and got Ubuntu running besides Mac. It wasnt recognized by neither the default boot-loader nor rEFIt straight away. I had to hold alt to come up with the special BIOS or something every time I needed to use Ubuntu (always).

I got up to a point where I could run Ubuntu with wireless, sound and pretty much everything working. Until the kernel updates were installed. Somehow I (or maybe it) managed to screw up and booting had become impossible, for it would crash halfway through with kernel errors and other undefined weirdnesses. Meanwhile I had tried installing Windows 7 on a different partition. Which I found to be catastrophic also. I was forced to put up with OSX, which in my opinion is fine at what it does but it doesn't do very much for me. After a couple of tries I had to give up on fiddling with Ubuntu for I needed Windows 7 to run software for school. So my current partition layout looks like this......

Ubuntu / Apple :: Macbook 7.1 - Single Versus Dual Boot?

Mar 10, 2011

I have a Macbook 7.1 (the white one)
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB DDR3 memory
250GB hard drive

I'd like to install Ubuntu on it because I really love the way Ubuntu is developing and becoming much more user friendly. My use will mainly be for browsing, working with wordprocessors and maybe downloading series from torrents. My question is, should I dual boot or single boot? My personal preference is to single-boot, I just like the idea of having one OS running on the machine. What are the cons of doing that? Also, If I want to dual boot just to keep the firmware updates. How much space should I designate for Ubuntu and how much for Mac OS?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Install Mac Os X On Macbook Alongside Existing Single-boot?

Nov 2, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 as the only OS on my Macbook 2,1's entire hard drive (used Live CD to reformat and install). Now I am wondering if it is possible to add a partition and install Mac OS X Snow Leopard alongside Ubuntu, for dual boot purposes. I have seen a lot of documentation for doing this the other way around--adding a Ubuntu partition to an existing Mac OS X installation, but I haven't found an answer for adding OSX to existing Ubuntu. If anyone knows anything about this

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Gimp 2.7 And Python (Import Error - No Module Named Gimp)

Mar 2, 2010

If you had Gimp 2.6 (with gimp-plugin-registry installed) and installed Gimp 2.7 to try its new goodies, but Layer Effects are not showing, and when executing "gimp" from console you get these *nasty* errors:

Code:
This is a development version of GIMP. Debug messages may appear here.
gimp-user-install: migrating from /home/user/.gimp-2.6
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/layerfx.py", line 23, in <module>
import gimp, gimpplugin, math
ImportError: No module named gimp .....

If you haven't install the 2.7 version yet. Before upgrading, backup "python" directory and then just restore it after installing 2.7.

Ubuntu Installation :: Gimp - Gimp-help-en - On 10.04 Lucid Lynx - Installing Other Applications And Preforming System Tasks?

Jun 12, 2010

Some of you may have had with issues after installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx 10.04. Which may be directly related to "gimp-help-en", which could prevent you from installing other applications and preforming system tasks. If so, use this method to fix it.

Process: (Terminal > $ sudo apt-get install gimp)

1. After installing Gimp go to the terminal:

2. Then load up the language support application:

3. Then it will ask you to install the "gimp-help-en", confirm it.

4. Fix'd

I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.

This ought to be simple to deal with, but I'm stuck. I'm using Gimp, and its "colorize" window is too tall for the screen. Ubuntu Networking :: Printer Sharing With Windows 7 And Snow Leopard

Jun 26, 2010

I installed it on a desktop today to try it out. So far I'm loving it and have gotten everything to work except for one thing:

There's a printer connected to it (HP PSC 1600), and I'd like the other computers on the network to be able to print to that computer. The other computers are running Windows 7, and one is running Snow Leopard.

When I plugged in the printer, Ubuntu recognized it almost immediately and installed it. Wonderful! I then went ahead and set it to be Shared, and hoped for the best. Neither the Windows machine or the OS X machine could find the printer...even after I pointed them directly at what I thought was the CUPS address (\mycomputername:631). To make matters even more confusing, I was able to set up shared folders and have the other computers be able to view them.
