Ubuntu :: Adding Data To A CD/DVD Already Containing Information?
May 13, 2011
I know that you can add data to disks already holding informationusing apps for windows without blanking the entire disk first. Unfortunately I haven't found a way to accomplish this with BraseroDisk Burner. Am I overlooking something, or do you have to use acompletely different application in order to do this in Ubuntu?
I'm trying to switch over my old server(9.10) data to a different server(10.04). My old server only had 2 drive bays, whereas my new one has 4. I already have my new server up and running(for the most part), and want to add the old hard drive to it. How would I do this without losing any information. I believe even my old drive is formatted to ext4. I was going to just throw it in there, but I'm afraid of losing information as I really don't want to lose a 1tb of info. I did try to search, but my title had too many common words in it.
this is probably going to seem like quite an odd post, and something that most of you probably won't even be aware of, but it is something that affects me a lot, maybe cos im slightly ocd about how things are organised on my computer, but here goes:
when adding music to a music player, say banshee- which is my favourite ubuntu one, many of the tracks information are often 'auto corrected', im not sure how this is done, whether there is information stored on the file, or whether the player accesses a database on the internet, but basically this is not what i want, i want to be able to upload the files and change them from the state that they are when i upload them. can anyone else relate to this problem? or know of a solution..
the thing is, it is only about 20% of the files that are changed after uploading and i have no idea what the reason is for it, and its not restricted to banshee, it happens with just about all media players
Data flow has become nowadays really huge. Although how hard one can try to tide folders, hard-disk, it can always be some days you are looking for something. What could be interesting to make available, e.g. to install for users, on all Debian stations. In some universities, with Linux-machines network, it is often kind of obliged to use emacs and 'office' KDE applications, as a standard at first.
for organizing better, what could be the solution as 'data flow organizer'? Many solutions, many methods, many ways are offered but none will be perfect
I tried the above using an existing multisession CD where data files were previously burned in a different pc using K3b. However, when the burning was completed successfully, the CD could not be read at all. I repeated the process with a blank CD choosing to leave it open in order to add more data later. All went well and the CD was readable but when I tried to add data to the same CD I got the message
Quote:
Appending new files to a multisession disc is not advised.
Already burnt files will be invisible (though still readable). Do you want to continue anyway?
I opted not to continue despite the temptation to see how invisible files can be read.
To sum it up, I find this turn of events absolutely appalling given that Brasero is the default software for CD burning in my system (Xubuntu 9.10). Can anyone tell me how to resolve this glaring shortcoming of Brasero so as to keep all my data files easily accessible in multisession CDs?
I installed a fresh version of squeeze, with kde, and it worked fine. After I untarred my backup /home and /etc, things came to a standstill. I got a final ERROR code after /home. After a restart I got a 'fix your system' warning requiring a Control-D, which I couldn't type. I had used tar -xzvpPf ...... If I had included a -w, which asks for confirmation before overwriting data, could I have prevented this problem.
I have a Hard Drive that has a corrupted file system and i have tried the usual MS Windows fixes, chkdsk and a number of recovery tools inc Dos recovery tools and failed.
The Drive is an MS Windows drive with an NTFS file system.
chkdsk scans and after several hours fixing numerous problems eventually gives up and fails to complete.
The directory "My Documents" contains several GB of data and displays that this is true. When trying to access the directory, access is denied because its corrupt. Using Windows and Dos recovery tools i can view the contents of the directory sometimes! but cannot copy out any of the data, the applications return messages saying no can do basically.
I would like to try to use Linux to recover the data.
Problem number one is i have never tried to add a hard drive to an existing Linux system before, how do i go about adding a new drive?
The 2nd problem is, is there a Linux application that i can use to attempt to repair and recover the corrupt data on this drive or more specifically in the "My Documents" directory.
I have a very large data file, with 3 numbers in each line, ex. 3 4 5 ; 6 7 8.I want to add two numbers (0 and 1) at the end of every line, and a string at the beginning of the line. Does anyone know a efficient way to do so?
I have a BIG extended partition. It's at about 750Gb. Aside from that, I have 2 unallocated spaces, one at 240Gb and one at 5Gb. I want to make one of my storage drives bigger, and so that I can take advantage of all the space I have. (Those 250Gb have been unused for ages. I want to use them for my growing libraries.) So I wonder: would it be safe to put these smaller "chunks" into the extended partition, and still have a working systen? I don't want to mess it all up.
Also, can I safely resize a partition, like adding the extra space, without touching the existing data? I'm not exactly sure how the resize/move function in GParted works. Will it wipe and extend or only extend it by adding it? It would be nice to have these questions answered. Also, if it's to any help, this is my partition table as of now:
[Code]....
As for the first entries, they're unallocated. They're the primary drives, but they don't exist. I'm actually considering to move my partitions out of the extended one, because I only have 3 partitions that I use and will ever use. But if the extended partition is not a problem, I will just keep it this way.
I'd imagine that I first extend the extended partition to consume the unallocated space, and then I move it all to the end of the partition, and then resize sda7 to consume it, and get a 750Gb partition. Can this be done without loss of data?
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but I've been running Ubuntu or a variant for about a year now and suddenly every now and then one or two of my documents (open office or pdfs) have no information and they won't open.
I'm trying to write a program which would get information from a webpage and display the information on my desktop sort of like a widget. I kind of remember there being something like this already made, but for the life of me I can't remember what it's calledDoes anyone know?
How would you make NIS user information override local user information on client systems? This is what I think is right? Add nis on the passwd registration file on the second line Is this correct?
I've been using Excel from OpenOffice with moderate success for the last year. Now I've just tried to open a new spreadsheet and I'm suddenly getting a highly condensed view. The cells are about 1mm X 4mm. If I expand them by selecting and dragging, then try to copy data from another spreadsheet onto the new one, the data shrinks to the small scale -- unreadable.
Right now I have a 320GB system drive and 3TB data drive. I want to add two more 3TB drives and do a software RAID5 3x3TB. Is that possible without losing the data that is already on the data drive?Just want to make sure before I bought the 2 two drives. Not looking for instructions on how to do it,but if you want to include some that would be great too Just making sure it will work.
We purchased a new database system at work last October, ditching the old system because of a lack of support from the vendor. This is a retail Point of Sale and Backoffice database system. I am not sure what system the new one runs on, but the system we replaced was a Firebird data base. The reason I am posting is because we are now in need of the information contained in the old database which was not completely imported into the new system.
Basically the problem is this: The database in on a Windows XP system and I found a copy of SQL Manager Lite 2008 on the system, which after quite a bit of studying, I figured out how to extract the database into a removable file. I have this file (178MB) on a USB stick in a file called Backoffice.fbd.
My studying suggests to me that I can get into this database with MySQL. I have never used this and have no clue how to do this. All I want to be able to do get into the database and create tab deliminated spreadsheet files for each of the database sections (Customers, Repairs, Sales History, stock files, etc.) Is it possible to do this with Ubuntu and MySQL and if so, can expert suggest one or two things to get me started. While a guided tutorial would be nice because I am not an expert, I am willing to learn on my own if someone could point me in the right direction.
Where apart from ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail does kmail keep account data, such as login data/names of pop/smtp servers? I wanted to install an entirely clean version of kmail, so I uninstalled/re-installed kmail via YAST. I manually deleted ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail. After installing kmail I found that the account data of my Yahoo account were still listed in the kmail configuration panel. Shall I delete the Yahoo account within kmail prior to uninstalling the kmail package?
A few months ago I have setup a server with three hard disks. The partition mapping the disks as follows:
Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x7ca36fee
[code]....
Now I have the following problem the LVM file system don't mount properly. If I open the mount point I see only a few files of the LVM disk. If I want to unmount the disk I get the following error:
umount /data/ umount: /data/: not mounted
If I want to mount the volume I get the following error:
mount -a mount: /dev/mapper/gegevens-Data already mounted or /data busy
I'm trying to connect to the VPN of my employer; after fix various minor issues I reach this point in which the DNS entries and the default gateway of the VPN are overwritten with the values of the eth0 device that appears by default. Therefore the vpn is not useful.
I have an application where I am sending data via serial port from PC1 (Java App) and reading that data in PC2 (C++ App). The problem that I am facing is that my PC2 (C++ App) is not able to read complete data sent by PC1 i.e. from my PC1 I am sending 190 bytes but PC2 is able to read close to 140 bytes though I am trying to read in a loop.Below is code snippet of my C++ AppOpen the connection to serial port
I am using read() in c++ to get data from a serial port. However, if no data is available on the serial port the function blocks until dta arrives.Example code:
I have some data files that should be distributed with my program. Using dist_pkgdata_DATA in Makefile.am, I get these files installed to /usr/local/data/share/package-name. The problem is that data is read-only, and my program needs to modify it. Playing with dist_sharedstate_DATA, dist_localstate_DATA, dist-data_DATA varibles, I got different installation directories, like /usr/local/com, usr/local/var, but data is always read-only.
How can I distribute modifiable data files with my package? I need some common directory for all users, or maybe local data in a user directory.
I'm wondering why I'm getting different information about my cpu from different sources within Ubuntu? Is it giving different units of measure or something? But both say MHz.
Code: :~$ cat /proc/cpuinfo processor: 0 vendor_id: AuthenticAMD cpu family: 15 model: 36 model name: AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology ML-34 .....
I am trying to generic way to convert the string datatype to other primitive data type. To achieve, i used Template . But i getting error and couldn't resolve the issue and error reported is also clueless.
About 7 years ago I setup a Redhat system with 8 serial terminals and 8 serial printers, this is still running but I need to get another system running so the original can be taken down for maintenance. The printers are ancient Newbury data dot matrix wide carriage with 7 data bits receive 8 data bits transmit Xon/Xoff flow control. Now I remember setting the transmit and receive data bits as above but after 7 years can't remember where.
I recently come across some bug reporting things. I know what is bug but don't know how to use bug information that i got . can anybody explain it for me .
I have changed my Compiz profile to enable the cube in unity and I'm worried about using anything beyond the basic cube. I have not found any information about using 3d windows or other cube effects , so I was wondering if anyone was doing this with Unity ?
I use the cube as mainly a workspace switcher but it would be nice to know how to enable the other effects without breakage , a guide would be nice and I realize Unity in 11.04 is new so it may take time before a guide/ work arounds will be posted.
Question? Where can I find information about copyright? A real state agent took one of my pictures from facebook to use it for his bussiness. He charges 2.5% for marketing.
