Ubuntu :: Adding LVM Volumes To GRUB2?
May 4, 2011
So after installing Ubuntu 11.04 with Fedora Beta 15, I decided it would be a good idea to get a *buntu based distro in case of anything. So I reinstalled it in the form of Xubuntu, and I see that Grub found my Windows 7 install, but not my Fedora install! Here is the output of fdisk -l:
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

I'm running Kubuntu 10.4. I cloned an old xp installation into the first primary partition on my disk and I was trying to add it to grub2. I can access the files when I mount it which means that the xp filesystem is working fine. When I do an update-grub though it doesn't detect it. I think that the problem is related to the fact that I cannot find a boot.ini file into the xp installation.

I've got a laptop I use for various things. I have one SATA HD with a number of partitions on it. It looks like this.
sda2 = System Reserved (Flag=boot)
sda3 = Windows 7
sda4 = extended
sda5 = Ubuntu
sda6 = WinXP
I started off with Win7 on there and added Ubuntu. Everything went fine and Grub added Win7 and I could boot to both. Since then I had to add WinXP. That wiped out Grub which I read it would. I tried adding Grub back which was unsuccessful so I just reinstalled Ubuntu which re-installed Grub, but not Win7 doesn't boot from the menu when I select it. Since then I've been trying to add Win7 and WinXP back into Grub with zero success. In addition I add the following which did not work.

I installed Win7 on a 2-disk RAID0 fakeraid. I then unplugged those drives and installed linux mint on a separate drive. I did it this way because if I left the drives plugged in, linux would jack up the fakeraid for those drives and make windows upbootable, and installing linux to the fakeraid itself is just too much of a PITA. So basically, this is the disk configuration, and there's no chance of me changing it.
Right now, I can boot into either win7 or mint by pressing F12 for the boot menu, and then selecting the drive the os is installed on. It would be nice if I could just add an entry to the grub menu for win7. I've used the menu.lst file before, but apparently all that has changed with grub2. I've checked out some of the grub2 docs and poked around in /etc/grub.d, but frankly, it seems to be orders of magnitude more complicated than it should be.

Is it possible to add menu entries for older kernels to boot instead of the latest?
I have tried this in Ubuntu 10.04 and it hasn't worked.
This used to be possible with ease in grub legacy.
I copied the current menu entry from /boot/grub/grub.cfg and pasted it in the /etc/grub.d/ 20_custom file.
Then I changed the kernel number to the older kernel number and the initrd number too. #update-grub puts this entry into 'grub.cfg', but it doesn't work.
I get:
The old kernel is in /boot as well as the respective initrd and config files.

I've noticed grub2 has modular structure. Is it possible to insert other Kernel modules into grub? Or can write my own modules to insert into grub?

I have extracted the files from a bootable CD to /dev/sdc2/bootable/winpwrec with the hope of booting from the hard drive. I have read the grub.cfg file and a couple of guides here and I'm still not sure what I'm doing. Is there any chance someone can tell me what I need to add to the grub.cfg file to add this to the boot menu? I am pretty well-versed in computers but I'm new to Linux and I'm still trying to get acquainted with the OS, terminology, and the boot loader. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, if that matters.
files in the folder:
BOOT.CAT;1 ISOLINUX.BIN;1 SCSI.CGZ;1
BOOT.MSG;1 ISOLINUX.CFG;1 SYSLINUX.CFG;1 VMLINUZ.;1
INITRD.CGZ;1 README.TXT;1 SYSLINUX.EXE;1
isolinux.cfg
Code:
#serial 0 19200

I like to load other distro's via their own grub.
So at the min I add an entry to code...
however when update-grub2 is run it also adds its own entries (for arch linux).
Is there a way to stop the update-grub2 script automatically adding a entry on a specific partition ?

I have a working Ubuntu install with the Grub2 bootloader. I need to manually add an entry to boot Fedora 13 off of sda. Sda1 is the boot partition, sda2 is LVM. None of the examples I've tried work. I do also have F13 grub installed on sda, but chainloading to it didn't do anything other than a blinking cursor.

i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.
sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes

I installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.
Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.

I want to load grub2 from grub4dos.I want to load directly the grub2 core. I know how to load first 512 bytes from some patition by chainloader and load grub2, but what I need is to load directly grub2 core without passing by bootstriping code (first 512 bytes).So, my first boot manager is grub4dos, then I can load grub2 and later I load Ubuntu. But I think I have to edit --set-root
What I dont know is how.
In hdd 0,7 (sda8) I have Ubuntu 10.10 and /boot/grub/core.img is in sda8 (hd0.7)
I tried this way:
Code:
title grub2
find --set-root /boot/grub/core.img
kernel /boot/grub/core.img

First Question: I have a very big volume (20+TB). When I try formatting it as ext4, I get the error message:
mke2fs 1.41.12 (17-May-2010) mkfs.ext4: Size of device /dev/sdc1 too big to be expressed in 32 bits using a blocksize of 4096. I understand that ext4 has a limit of 1EB (about a million terabytes), but a 32-bit limitation in e2fsprogs prevents me from creating a partition > 16TB.
Until e2fsprogs is updated to use 48-bit block addressing, it appears my choices are:Break up the volume into smaller volumes < 16TB, or Use xfs or zfs (I have already created a test xfs partition, and it works fine).
Does anyone have any opinions about which option is preferable? I have never used xfs before. Is it as robust as ext4? Is it as well supported by Ubuntu? What about zfs? Is it worth downloading from the ppa?
Second Question: I now have a huge amount of data to back up. In the old days, I remember making a full backup of a "big" 10 MB hard drive by taking a stack of floppies and inserting them one at a time into my floppy drive while my backup program split the backup into 1.4 MB chunks small enough to fit on a floppy.
I now have the same problem, but at a different scale. I need to back up 20+TB onto a stack of external 2TB drives. Is there any software package that can fragment a backup in this way?

I have 9.10 and notice that when I look in Places none of my volumes/partitions are mounted - if I click on them I have to enter my user password to authenticate to gain access. My problem is that (with some help) I have set up rsync so it runs when I shut down my PC and backs up my Home folder from a partition on sda to a partition on sdb - this is great but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
I have done some tests and discovered that if I use my PC and never manually mount my backup sdb partition the rsync does not work (I also have GAdmin-rysnc so I can run manually backup but this also will not run if I do no mount the sdb volume). However, if I do mount the sdb backup partition and close down/restart then the backup works. What I need is my sdb backup partition to be automatically mounted every time I switch on - can this be done? I'm sure I had this working in 9.04 (auto mounting) but 9.10 seems not to like it.

Before anything I just want to apologize for my awful english (french people just talk/write french, that's a fact ) So, I have troubles with gnome menu volumes. I just want to hide them from the netbook-laucher but anything I've tried worked. I have two Windows / NTFS partitions wich are readeable/writable in ubuntu Lucid Lynx Netbook Remix. One is the C: partition, the other is the boot partition from Windows 7. This computer is for a public place so I can't let them just visible. To hide them I try few things :
Code:
ls -lR /dev/disk
Code:
/dev/disk/by-label:

I got a new computer today, a Compaq Presario CQ56, with Windows 7 preinstalled, and I want to dualboot with Ubuntu, but I'm having some problems. I'll explain what I've done so far, in case I did something wrong.
When I popped in my 10.10 Live CD, I was surprised to see there was not "install alongside existing operating system", which I thought I remembered from the last time I installed Ubuntu, but I chose manual partitioning and continued. I'd never done this before, so I quickly learned I had to first create a (couple) partition(s).
After freeing up a large amount of space and rebooting twice as recommended, I booted off the Live CD and opened GParted, intending to create a Ubuntu system partition, one for swap, and one for my home folder. When I right-clicked on my unallocated space, I got the error message "It is not possible to create more than 4 primary partitions". After a little googling, I found I had to eliminate one of my primary partitions and create a new extended partition, which I could then partition further. Noticing I had a partition that didn't seem important, HP_TOOLS, I googled and found this.
When I inserted my flash drive, it didn't automount. When I tried to mount by right-clicking and clicking "Mount", nothing happened. I also cannot mount the HP_TOOLS partition, nor any other. They don't mount when I click on them in the Places menu, and they don't mount when I right-click and choose Mount.
My main question is "Help! How do I install Ubuntu?", but I think if I can create these partitions, which requires mounting the drives (I think), I can figure the rest out.
A screenshot of my GParted window is attached, if that helps. (I couldn't see how to insert it without a URL)

I'm just wondering - what is the best way to set up your encrypted volumes with dm_crypt and LUKS?
My understanding was that aes-lrw ws better than aes-cbc - and then I stumble upon [url] which says that LRW has some problems, and XTS is better? I dont know enough about encryption theory to be able to say anything, so i'm hoping some folks more enlightened will be able to say something here.
I was previously using aes-lrw-benbi to set up a volume. If xts is truly better - should i be using '-c aes-xts-benbi' then?

I have a DOS/Linux dual-boot system. After recently replacing the original motherboard (an Elitegroup P6VEM3, of all things!) with a salvaged Dell D300 motherboard, I'm preparing to replace the Red Hat 8 currently installed with a Ubuntu live CD that I've had for some time (but that wouldn't work at all on the old motherboard, for some reason) I have a question about the "partitioner" stage of the installer: I don't know what to do with my 5 DOS volumes. My hard drive is partitioned as follows (from the partitioner's report when I select manual mode; annotations in parentheses):
/dev/sda
/dev/sda1 fat16 57MB 33MB (C:, "DOS")
/dev/sda5 fat16 106MB 33MB (D:, "STUFF")
/dev/sda6 fat16 633MB 121MB (E:, "APPLICATION")

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop and I now remember why I didn't ever use it, and that is because the sound volumes are ear-shattering loud across reboots. I have tried doing:Code:sudo alsactl store 0However it doesn't save the settings. I can set the volumes manually using alsa-mixer but that is a pain.I have read the "comprehensive fix to audio problems"sticky but it did not alleviate my problem. And as far as I know, my alsa is up to date.I'm sorry I don't know the relevant output of code needed to show alsa version, etc., so please inform me and I will post accordingly.
