ubuntu on boot mount all my NTFS volume , and i'm a bit worried about this , outside my floppy
by the way this is not the point
i would love to know if there is a gui that help me to edit the startup/boot actions
i mean what should perform ubuntu in the boot startup
i'm looking for a gui (i prefer a gui then the console because i don't know how use it ) that help me to manage it
1) i would like to disable -> mount my ntfs volumes
2) in the future i would like to enable it again , i mean mount my ntfs volumes
now i would like to disable
is there a gui (program) that let me to edit the startup?

I have a bit unusual request.
There are three partitions on my hard drive. Two of them were assigned to mount points / and /home during system installation. The third one was left intact.
After installation the first two partitions were automatically integrated into directory tree and there was a shortcut on the Nautilus sidebar for the third one. Then, I registered the third partition in /etc/fstab for automounting at /home/user/Data directory. For now it works fine, the volume is mounted on startup. But I still have the shortcut to this volume in Nautilus sidebar and icon on my Desktop.
I am interested, if it is possible to disable showing of this items on Desktop and in Nautilus to make the third partition look like registered at system setup time.

I have 9.10 and notice that when I look in Places none of my volumes/partitions are mounted - if I click on them I have to enter my user password to authenticate to gain access. My problem is that (with some help) I have set up rsync so it runs when I shut down my PC and backs up my Home folder from a partition on sda to a partition on sdb - this is great but sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
I have done some tests and discovered that if I use my PC and never manually mount my backup sdb partition the rsync does not work (I also have GAdmin-rysnc so I can run manually backup but this also will not run if I do no mount the sdb volume). However, if I do mount the sdb backup partition and close down/restart then the backup works. What I need is my sdb backup partition to be automatically mounted every time I switch on - can this be done? I'm sure I had this working in 9.04 (auto mounting) but 9.10 seems not to like it.

I got a new computer today, a Compaq Presario CQ56, with Windows 7 preinstalled, and I want to dualboot with Ubuntu, but I'm having some problems. I'll explain what I've done so far, in case I did something wrong.
When I popped in my 10.10 Live CD, I was surprised to see there was not "install alongside existing operating system", which I thought I remembered from the last time I installed Ubuntu, but I chose manual partitioning and continued. I'd never done this before, so I quickly learned I had to first create a (couple) partition(s).
After freeing up a large amount of space and rebooting twice as recommended, I booted off the Live CD and opened GParted, intending to create a Ubuntu system partition, one for swap, and one for my home folder. When I right-clicked on my unallocated space, I got the error message "It is not possible to create more than 4 primary partitions". After a little googling, I found I had to eliminate one of my primary partitions and create a new extended partition, which I could then partition further. Noticing I had a partition that didn't seem important, HP_TOOLS, I googled and found this.
When I inserted my flash drive, it didn't automount. When I tried to mount by right-clicking and clicking "Mount", nothing happened. I also cannot mount the HP_TOOLS partition, nor any other. They don't mount when I click on them in the Places menu, and they don't mount when I right-click and choose Mount.
My main question is "Help! How do I install Ubuntu?", but I think if I can create these partitions, which requires mounting the drives (I think), I can figure the rest out.

After applying Ubuntu updates i am now unable to mount volumes it tells me that i am denied.I have checked my user permissions and i am allowed to mount. I have also downgraded MountAll to no avail.

I have a media server running OES2 on SLES 10.x after the network admin applied a patch to the system the machine will no longer mount the NSS volumes. I am relatively experienced with using linux, but I primarily use red hat and fedora so all these NOvell tools are a bit foriegn to me. I need to get the data off the volumes and restore the drives (ext3) asap. I dont want to screw around with eDirectory or OES2 unless I have to.

I inherited a 3ware 9550SX running a version of gentoo with a2.6.28.something kernel. I started over with CentOS 5.6 x86_64.tw_cli informs me that the 9-disk RAID 5 is healthy.The previous admin used lvm (?) to carve up the RAID into a zilliontiny pieces and one big piece. My main interest is the big piece.Some of the small pieces refused to mount until I installed theCentOS plus kernel (they are reiserfs).The remainder seem to be ext3; however, they are not mounted at boot("refusing activation"). lvs tells me they are not active. If I try tomake one active, for example:root> lvchange -ay vg01/usrI get:Refusing activation of partial LV usr. Use --partial to override.If I use --partial, I get:Partial mode. Incomplete logical volumes will be processed.and then I can then mount the partition, but not everything seems tobe there.
Some of the directory entries look like this:?--------- ? ? ? ? ? logfilesIs it possible that the versions of the kernel and lvm that wereon the gentoo system are causing grief for an older kernel (andpossibly older lvm) on CentOS 5.6 and that I might have greaterfortunes with CentOS 6.x ?Or am I missing something fundamental? This is my first experiencewith lvm, so it's more than a little probable.

I'm running 10.04 running daily updates. A couple days back, I saw an update related to mounting volumes. Not sure if this is what broke my system, but might be. When attempting to mount a partition from nautilus, I get a message saying I do not have authorization. It does not even ask for my password, just fails. I tried running updates and this asks for my password and accepts it fine. I opened disk utility from the menus and tried to mount the volume from there but also got the same permission denied, not authorized without even being asked for my password.
I then ran gksu palimpsest. I was asked for my password and was able to mount and unmount partitions from there. However, when mounted, my applications and nautilus cannot access the data in the partitions mounted using gksu palimpsest. In nautilus, I can navigate to /media/Data (the partition in question) but I get "THE FOLDER CONTENTS CANNOT BE DISPLAYED You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "Data"." When I open nautilus via gksu in the terminal, I do have full access to the partitions.
How do I get my privileges back for my user account. I am the only user on the computer, and I have never set up a root account since my upgrade to 10.04 months ago. I tried of course the Administration->Users and Groups menu, but I am not permitted to change the account type or open advanced settings. I click the button, but nothing happens, not even a password request. Running gksu admin-settings on the terminal allows me access. My current settings are attached.

We have a Centos 5.6 server mounting two iSCSI volumes from an HP P2000 storage array. Multipathd is also running, and this has been working well for the few months we have been using it. The two volumes presented to the server were created in LVM, and worked without problem.We had a requirement to reboot the server, and now the iSCSI volumes will no longer mount. From what I can tell, the iSCSI connection is working ok, as I can see the correct sessions, and if I run 'fdisk -l' I can see the iSCSI block devices, but the O/S isn't seeing the filesystems. Any LVM command does not show the volumes at all, and 'vgchange -a y' only lists the local boot volume, not the iSCSI volumes. My concern is that, the output of 'fdisk -l' says 'Disk /dev/xxx doesn't contain a valid partition table' for all the iSCSI devices. Research shows that performing the vgchange -a y command should automatically mount any VG's that aren't showing, but it doesn't work.
There's a lot of data on these iSCSI volumes, and I'm no LVM expert. I've read that some have had problems where LVM starts before iSCSI and things get a bit messed up, but I don't know if this is the case here (I can't tell), but if there's a way of switching this round that might help, I'm prepared to give it a go.There was absolutely no indication there were any problems with these volumes, so corruption is highly unlikely.

I'm looking for a way of mounting an encrypted volume - home folder or a separate mount point, using only the standard login authentication (ie KDM or ssh). I thought the pam_mount module provided this, but I still get prompted for a password on the console at boot time. This is inconvenient as both my main desktops are headless HTPCs. I want the login credentials to be passed through, at log in time. I'm guessing this is possible, but to be honest, encryption is one thing in Linux that still completely confuses me.

I have two NTFS volumes I want to automount at boot. I can't get my user account to mount them in Fedora 10. I keep getting the message that the two lines I have edited in fstab are bad. The volumes are sda2 and sda8, and the volume names are SPACELAB and Spaceman. I also need to be able to mount an NTFS usb drive from time to time. I am getting frustrated, so I have posted my fstab file below,

I have a system where the logical volumes are not being detected on boot and would like some guidance as to how to cure this. The box is a Proliant DL385 G5p with a pair of 146 GB mirrored disks. The mirroring is done in hardware by an HP Smart Array P400 controller. The mirrored disk (/dev/cciss/c0d0) has 4 partitions: boot, root, swap and an LVM physical volume in one volume group with several logical volumes, including /var, /home and /opt.
The OS is a 64-bit RHEL 5.3 basic install with a kernel upgrade to 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5.x86_64 (to cure a problem with bonded NICs) plus quite a few extras for stuff like Oracle, EMC PowerPath and HP's Proliant Support Pack. The basic install is OK and the box can still be rebooted OK after the kernel upgrade. However, after the other stuff goes on it fails to reboot.
The problem is that the boot fails during file system check of the logical volume file systems but the failure is due to these volumes not being found. Specifically the boot goes through the following steps:
Red Hat nash version 5.1.19.6 starting
setting clock
starting udev
loading default keymap (us)
setting hostname
No devices found <--- suspicious?
Setting up Logical Volume Management:
fsck.ext3 checks then fail with messages: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/<volume group>/<logical volume> There are also messages about not being able to find the superblock but this is clearly due to the device itself not being found. If I boot from a rescue CD all of the logical volumes are present, with correct sizes; dmsetup shows them all to be active and I can access the files within. Fdisk also shows all the partitions to be OK and of the right type. I am therefore very sure that there is nothing wrong with the disk or logical volumes....

I have a DOS/Linux dual-boot system. After recently replacing the original motherboard (an Elitegroup P6VEM3, of all things!) with a salvaged Dell D300 motherboard, I'm preparing to replace the Red Hat 8 currently installed with a Ubuntu live CD that I've had for some time (but that wouldn't work at all on the old motherboard, for some reason) I have a question about the "partitioner" stage of the installer: I don't know what to do with my 5 DOS volumes. My hard drive is partitioned as follows (from the partitioner's report when I select manual mode; annotations in parentheses):

Mount Device Underlying Partitions

/home /dev/md2 /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3
Recently updated to kernel 2.5.32.11-99 and upon restart, failed to boot. Get stuck at a recovery prompt asking for root password or Ctrl-D to continue (which reboots system). I worked around this problem by reverting to the previous kernel 2.6.32.9-70. From what I can tell, with the newer kernel there is a problem with device enumeration of software raid volumes.

and I'm dumped into recovery mode. However, if I remove these mounts from /etc/fstab via comments, I can wait for the system to boot (which it does very quickly) then mount the mapper devices myself. So what is going on? Has something changed wrt logical volumes, or is this just systemd? I can live with manual mounting, but any advice on resolving the automatic mounting situation would be great.

i have a fedora 11 server which can't access the ext4 partitions on lvm logical volumes on a raid array during boot-up. the problem manifested itself after a failed preupgrade to fedora 12; however, i think the attempt at upgrading to fc12 might not have anything to do with the problem, since i last rebooted the server over 250 days ago (sometime soon after the last fedora 11 kernel update). prior to the last reboot, i had successfully rebooted many times (usually after kernel updates) without any problems. i'm pretty sure the fc12 upgrade attempt didn't touch any of the existing files, since it hung on the dependency checking of the fc12 packages. when i try to reboot into my existing fedora 11 installation, though, i get the following screen: (click for full size) a description of the server filesystem (partitions may be different sizes now due to the growing of logical volumes):

except he's talking about fake raid and dmraid, whereas my raid is linux software raid using mdadm. this machine is a headless server which acts as my home file, mail, and web server. it also runs mythtv with four hd tuners. i connect remotely to the server using nx or vnc to run applications directly on the server. i also run an xp professional desktop in a qemu virtual machine on the server for times when i need to use windows. so needless to say, it's a major inconvenience to have the machine down.

I just installed kubuntu 9.10 and noticed that several partitions (fat32 and ntfs) are mounted automatically after I login. I searched /etc/fstab but found no entries for those partitions. So I guess there may be something like start-up scripts that automatically detect and mount all partitions on the hard disk at boot/login. Does anybody know the location of those scripts (if any)? I want to disable that auto mount.

I have Debian 7 running on RPi2 with Kodi. My NFS server is running on Slackware 14.1 which doesn't have full support for nfs4. I think this is causing some slowdowns/extra time when trying to stream video. Debian 7 by default mounts NFS as nfsv4, I would to like to disable this if possible. If so how?

I just installed Fedora 12. When I open Dolphin, I do find links on the sidebar which enable me to mount the NTFS partitions with a click. I want to disable this for less privileged users and only allow root to do mount and unmount of partitions. I was not able to see autofs installed nor any sign of entries in the fstab.

I am struggling with getting an sshfs mount mounted on system boot. I have a script that mounts the sshfs for "userA". When userA runs the script all is well - user A can access the remote filesystem, root user can't see it as expected. The basic command is: sshfs userA@remote host:/home/userA /home/userA/mountdir -p 21212 -o password_stdin < passwordfile. I can prepend the sshfs command in the script with su - userA -c and when I run this script logged in as root all is well, userA has access and all is well. If I then put this script in /etc/init.d and reference it properly in the rc. directories the mount doesn't happen. If I prepend the sshfs command with sudo, same thing. Logged in as root I can run the script and UserA has access. Run the script in /etc/init.d during startup and the mount doesn't happen. Echoing text to a log file shows that the script is being executed but no mount happens.

How do i disable the linux file cache on a xfs partition (both read an write).
We have a xfs partition over a hardware RAID that stores our RAW HD Video. Most of the shoots are 50-300gb each so the linux cache has a hit-rate of 0.001%.
I have tryed the sync option but it still fills up the cache when copinging the files. ( about 30x over per shoot :P )
/etc/fstab:
/dev/sdb1 /video xfs sync,noatime,nodiratime,logbufs=8 0 1
Im running debian lenny if it helps.

This on a Vostro 1220 Laptop w/ Intel 5300 wireless:
A.I have long boot up time.I think it's because of the eth0 network search which I don't use.I have an intel wireless 5300 card running.How can I speed up the boot time, i.e. disable or change the eth0 at boot, the searching?
B:When I restart or shutdown, the screen flashes repeatedly and gets some garbled colors along the top before finally rebooting looks like windows ME or something).This vostro has an intel x4500HD vid chipset in it.
C.How do I get into gnome configuration editor to turn on Metacity compositing? Alt-F2 and run gconf-editor doesn't do it. I don't do compiz, but need compositing.
D.I need to install Chromium Browser as it sync my bookmarks.I have RPMforge enabled btw also...how can I do that? I.e. rpm repo for chromium?
This will help me get off to a running start so I can get up to speed on CentOS..

I've been trying to remove Ubuntu from the boot process.A lot of different resources show a lot of different solutions, none which worked for me.I've started out with a base server (9.10) and added a minimal GNOME installation. Now I want to prevent GNOME from starting unless I specify to do so (startx)! Using sysv-rc-conf I've disabled GDM for any run level. Then I have installed BUM to remove GNOME there as well.

I want to turn off the sound when Ubuntu boots and can't figure out how. I have tried System > Preferences > Sound > making sure mute is checked for alert volume and also the alert volume level is all the way to the left. It still goes off when I boot.

Is there a way to disable LVM at boot, I'm having problems with the HD at install this on the attachment is what i get.
The only drive showing there is /dev/sdb the other one is not a drive, there should be 2 more 120gb HD and 1 250GB but they don't show, now I've tried installing slackware and it can see all the different drives no problem and i was able to install to /dev/sda with no problem, is there anyway i can just disable LVM or whatever it is that is doing that to my drives? thanksAnd btw they are not in a raid at all, they are all sata drives on the onboard controller of the motherboard which is MSI P43 NEO-F

I have a server that NFS exports the /home directory out to other computers. On the desktop they all work great, but on a wireless laptop, this is where the problem occurs. The wireless enables after the person logs in, rendering the NFS export /home useless on the laptops.Is there anyway to have the wireless enable correctly on the boot so that NFS can mount properly at boot also?I'm using Fedora 11 (32bit) with a wireless router that has a security of WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]. I could switch to some of the older versions if necessary to get this working.

I've just reinstalled 10.04 LTS, after my update from 9.10 to 10.04 made some weird errors. So everything is good now, the problems before were fixed by the reinstall.By the reinstall, grub2 were installed aswell. Before, I ran grub1 (I guess) and at bootup it didnt show the list of boot choices you have, like safe boot or other OS if you have multi boot. It just booted up and I could press ESC if I wanted the menu. That disapperead after I installed grub2, so how do I get this function back, I kinda liked it.
One more question, after the reinstall I setup the taskbar and by mistake I remove the sound control. How do I get this back, it's not in the "Add to panel" when I right click on the taskbar.
