Ubuntu :: Accessing 2nd HDD From Distro?

Feb 19, 2010

My Desktop only has a 60GB HDD which I am running Linux Xuuntu on. I just found a 40GB HDD that I install into the desktop as well. What I really wanna do with it is wipe it clean and then format it to be accessible from my Linux Distro like "Extra Memory" for storing things like music etc. I'm having trouble doing this. It reads in Gparted but not quite sure what I need to do to do this.

Networking :: Why Doesn't Distro 9.0 Setup Work For 13.1 Distro?

Sep 6, 2010

I have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.

This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.

Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.

I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).

General :: Best LXDE Based Distro/distro That Supports LXDE?

Dec 15, 2010

Lubuntu is nice - but it seems the LXDE version is not as up to date as Fedora LXDE Spin or even Debian squeeze with LXDE installed. I do like Chromium on Lubuntu though... its faster and a nice touch. I am looking for a lightweight 64-bit distribution for my main laptop (it is by no means "old" or "low spec" but I like that Lubuntu starts up in like 2 secs).

LXDE version seems not to be recent (esp in 10.04 version which seems to work more stably for me - with Nvidia drivers etc)64 bit install is currently a pain - requires first install of minimal CD or alternate CD both of which required wired Ethernet, then install of lubuntu from PPA. Native 64-bit support would be nice. Linux Mint LXDE, for example, is also only 32-bit.

Ubuntu :: Accessing A Website That Has 127.0.0.1 Set As Its IP

Every time I try and visit this website I get brought to my default localhost page. I've pinged the website and my terminal reads:

64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=5 ttl=64 time=0.028 ms

I've also thrown the domain into [URL] to make sure it wasn't something up locally... again it came up as 127.0.0.1. Is there any way I'd be able to access this site?

Ubuntu :: 9.10 -- Accessing The GRUB Menu?

Jan 18, 2010

It took me 3 shots at installing 9.10 (some people are just a little slow) in dual mode with Vista, but I finally got it right. As a by-product of stumbling around like that I now have multiple entries in the GRUB menu and would like to remove the ones I no longer need. How do I do that? I assume each menu entry represents a chunk of code that is, likewise, no longer needed. I would like to free up that space. How can I make sure I'm deleting the correct version?I also wonder how I can copy/paste the menu here to make it easier for all to see. Finally, I assume the latest entry in the menu is shown first. Is there any way to get at time and date when entries are made

Ubuntu :: Accessing Partition From Windows 7?

May 13, 2010

I dual boot Ubuntu 10.4 and Windows 7 (actually, just installed the Win7 a few hours ago.

I like that I can access the Windows 7 partition from Ubuntu, but not the other way around. I found links for several file explorers, but is there any way to install an extension for the standard Windows Explorer that can open EXT3 partitions (and the files therein) as if they were NTFS?

Most of the links I found refer to custom file explorers. I only want to use one file explorer, not switch between two different ones depending on which partition I want to open. Also, if I use a custom file explorer, how will dialogs like "Save as..." be able to handle saving directly to EXT3?

Ubuntu :: Accessing Mount Point Over NFS

May 22, 2010

I have a folder shared over NFS that contains three sub folders:
(Machine A)
/usr/nfsshare/a
/usr/nfsshare/b
/usr/nfsshare/c

I can see these three folders just fine on machine B via nfs.
sudo mount machineA:/usr/nfsshare /mnt/ShareMountOnB
Now I want to mount a second drive in machine A, and mount it as a fourth shared folder:
mkdir /usr/nfsshare/d
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /usr/nfsshare/d

I can see and access all four folders on machine A just fine. I can see all four folders on machine B in /mnt/ShareMountOnB, but when I descend into folder d, it is empty! Bizarrely I can create files in this empty folder d on machine B, but I have no idea where they are being held. They are certainly not in machine A. What I have to do to access the real contents of folder d. I have already changed all permissions and owners to be identical to the other folders.Sharing it over samba to a Windows PC works fine.

Ubuntu :: Accessing BIOS To Set Up Boot From USB

Oct 16, 2010

I understand this is not directly an ubuntu issue, but this arose as I was trying to install ubuntu, so I'm hoping some kind souls on here would be good enough to help anyway.

I've in the past installed ubuntu on to my PC using a CD, but this time I thought I'd try creating a USB startup disk.

I was required to set up the BIOS to change the boot order so I can boot from the USB flash drive.

The problems arose when I pushed the 'DEL' key (the correct key for my motherboard) to access the BIOS setup. When doing this the computer completely froze and would not progress any further to boot. It would still boot normally from the HDD provided I didn't try to enter the BIOS.

Looking on the internet for a solution I tried using the motherboard jumper to reset the CMOS. Now I can't boot up the computer at all. I get a message saying 'CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded' then it asks me to press F1 to continue. I try this, but nothing happens. Clearing the CMOS has made things worse as now I can't get the computer to boot at all.

Have I killed my motherboard somehow? I've tried using a different keyboard (one USB and the other a USB keyboard but with an adaptor to connect it to the P/S2 port).

On further investigation any key press from the keyboard is enough to freeze the computer at whatever point.

My motherboard is an WinFast NF4SK8AA with AMD Athlon processor and 4Gb of mem.

Ubuntu Servers :: Accessing Webserver From Outside LAN?

Oct 20, 2010

I posted this question a while ago but haven't had any luck getting it answered so I reworded everything to make it more clear. I started an Ubuntu web server on an old work laptop. The purpose of this server is to host a small file-sharing site, a forum, and a wiki. I have no prior experience with command line Ubuntu but am trying to figure this all out.

So far Ive setup the LAMP server, so apache, mysql, and php are installed. Ive also installed phpBB3 and Mediawiki. Both phpBB3 and Mediawiki are able to open from inside my LAN. I also have SSH setup and am able to use putty to manage the server from inside my LAN. Mediawiki runs slow internally but this is a secondary concern.

Externally to the LAN I can access the webserver using SSH(but sometimes it is too slow for anything that opens up such as nano or the SQL password prompt to display and the connection drops). I can also browse to the site and see the default apache welcome message. But I cannot open the mediawiki or phpbb site. Both will sit indefinitely and not open. The access log on the server shows that the request is being passed through though.

Ubuntu :: Accessing MP4 Player - USB Indicator Goes Away

Jul 31, 2011

I have bought a Logik MP4 touch screen player. Upon inserting the USB cable in the MP4 player, the screen lights up, and the usb icon is displayed, then after a few seconds the usb indicator goes away and the charge icon is displayed. No where does ubuntu mount the file system.

While the USB icon is displayed, the output of "lsusb" is:
Code:
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 1e74:4631 Coby Electronics Corporation
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

After the charging indicator appears, lsusb hangs.. No output appears in the terminal. Disk Utility also doesn't show any removable drives attached to my computer. There is music on the player, I was forced to connect the player to a windows machine to copy music on it. It first detected is as a "Logik Device" and then AFTER those drivers were installed it detected it as "A Removable storage device".... I wonder if this is a modeswitch issue? Such as are being experienced by 3G modem users? How can this be fixed so I can transfer music to and from the player under ubuntu?

I have tried it on:
Ubuntu 10.04 32bit
Ubuntu studio 10.04 64bit
Ubuntu 11.04 64bit

All give the exact same outcome as above (including the hang on the second lsusb command). I left the lsusb command in the background and after about 13minutes it gave me an output of:

Code:
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Ubuntu :: Skipping The Authentication When Accessing And HDD?

Aug 7, 2011

On a laptop I have Windows 7 installed, and ubuntu 11.04. Now. A while ago the HDD died and I replaced it. with some data loss but nothing much to worry. Now I thought that it would be useful if I somehow could manage to direct the Documents, Music etc. etc. folders located /home/[user] to somewhere on a different partition HDD. I managed to make new folders on the partition and link them with the documents and music folders etc.. the problem now is is that you have to unlock it every time by either opening the partition and insert your password. I know that the password problem can be evaded by simply changing some settings, but. I want to evade the whole process of clicking on the partition. It is for security reasons that that have to sort of activate the partition, but I find it becoming a bit annoying.

So, has anyone a clue of how to activate the driver right at the start? something automatic stuff. Or does someone know how to disable this ?

Ubuntu :: XP Accessing A Samba Share?

Sep 1, 2011

I use an IBM S50 desktop running XP as a file and print server via Windows shares and so far all my XP and Ubuntu laptops can see and use the shares. Now I would like to move the S50 to Ubuntu and still use it as a file and print server. To test this, I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 via wubi and then I installed samba. First thing was to do the simplest case: follow the official documentation,

[URL]

I followed it to the letter, editing the smb.conf file, creating a /srv/samba/share directory, changing the permissions, and restarting the daemons. I was able to read and write to the share with my Ubuntu laptop. Success! However, my Windows laptop can see the Samba server, but when I click on the share, "Ubuntu server (Samba, Ubuntu)" to reveal the file system, it asks for a username and password.

how to let XP access the Ubuntu share?

Code:
workgroup = workgroup
server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu)
security = user

[Code].....
