Aug 7, 2010Is is safe to assume that if I have Lucid's 64 bit server installed and then type apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, the 64 bit desktop will be installed?

View 1 RepliesI am trying to upgrade an amd64 lenny system to squeeze.I've got a 2.6.32 kernel running, done aptitude update and aptitude install aptitude. When I try "aptitude safe-upgrade", it sits forever resolving dependencies.it seems to search with the resolver counting up more and more open/conflict/ whatever.I stopped it once it got over 100,000)Is it possible to get aptitude to do a safe-upgrade, perhaps using a command line option?

I'm fairly new to debian, but not to Linux overall. And it seems that I can not install anything using the "apt-get" or "aptitude" commands. Here is what it says when I try to install synaptic:

Package synaptic is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source.

I want to install aptitude using apt-get, but some problems happen like this:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
aptitude : Depends: libapt-pkg-libc6.10-6-4.8
Depends: libept0 (>= 0.5.30) but it is not going to be installed

I tried synaptic "aptitude install synaptic". Got this:

I was installing something, usplash, I think it was...
I ran $ sudo aptitude install usplash
and after it asked me if I wanted to install some aditional packages, it returned this:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
I have seen this error before. I just ran the command
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
And it returned this:
Setting up initramfs-tools (0.92bubuntu29) ...
update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28.10-some-string-here

update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28.10-some-string-here
dpkg: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
I did an:
$ aptitude search initramfs-tools
and I noticed that it had a "C" next to it. I think this has something to do with the package not being configured correctly or at all. Also looks like it is trying to generate an initd, but missing something. That kernel name looks kinda funky, though...
Im having an issue with sudo aptitude install. If i attempt to install anything, it says it will remove all of the packages below. On the other hand,if i use the Synaptic Package Manager, it doesn't remove any packages what is going on here? Any ideas? I have added some karmic repositories, but i dont think that should do anything?

I installed fbpanel with sudo aptitude install fbpanel, but I can't find the config file. according to the readme it's suppose to be under ~/.config/fbpanel/default, but it's not there. Where else can it be? I did a whereis fbpanel and it's located in a few areas, but no default config file is there!

I recently switched back to ubuntu after a year of gaming on w7, however I think that this time I'm going to stick to ubuntu, if she doesnt screw me like she has the previous times. Anyways, I was just wondering what media players you guys favor, and why? (maybe there doesn't have to be a reason xD), and I tried to install beep media player with:
sudo aptitude install beep-media-player
And the return is: sudo: aptitude: command not found

Is is needed to install all backported packages individually? I want to upgrade to any backported package with the command:

Looking for a light desktop for a P3/512MB I installed xubuntu and I felt it slow. For a test, just tried installing lubuntu and it was so fast compared to xubuntu. The word here is I would like to move to xfce. Doing another test, I installed Debian Lenny + xfce and was way much faster than xubuntu.
My question: Can I install Ubuntu Desktop command only + xfce ? Is it going to be faster than xubuntu? Is there another recommendation for a debian based distro with xfce which runs faster than xubuntu?
I am trying to setup my HTPC. I wanted to have the most minimal overhead possible so I installed Ubuntu 10.10 server from the mini.iso and just added the ssh option. I then used the following command to give me a desktop environment because I will want to run firefox and it apparently requires this to run.
Here is the command that I ran:apt-get install xorg gnome-core gdm gnome-applets gnome-system-tools gnome-utils ubuntu-artwork compiz-gnome firefox sysv-rc-conf.The desktop works fine and I can open fire fox, however, the remote desktop is missing from the preferences menu. How can I install this? I would like to add the remote desktop option from a command line.
is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

If I go back to self-installing 1.1, am I going to have a repeat of those nightmares? I guess a better way to phrase it, is there any way to get opencv 1.1 through aptitude?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhat's the difference between apt-get and aptitude? Could I use either to effectively update my system? (ie. do "apt-get update" and "aptitude update" do the same thing?)
View 4 Replies View RelatedI read somewhere that it's not a good idea to mix the use of apt-* (eg. apt-get, apt-file, etc.) and "aptitude". I guess they're not using the same database to keep track of things.Problem is, they don't offer the same features:"apt-get safe-upgrade" doesn't exist, so have to use "aptitude safe-upgrade"."aptitude show/list mypackage" doesn't show the files that an uninstalled package (ie. still in depot) contains, so have to use "apt-file show mypackage".

Is there any way I can free port 25 and allow postfix to listen on it?
