Feb 17, 2011I recently got new hard drives for more space and copied all my old drives onto this one (everything mirrored, no problems)The thing is, when I first setup my Ubuntu, I only allotted like 20GB because of space.Now that I have new hard drives, I wanted to give it more space, roughly double it to 50gb.The problem is, I am unable to resize it.I have booted into the Ubuntu Live CD, and started Gparted. I see all my stuff there, including the unallocated space next to my ubuntu partition (I left it so i could fill it when I expanded the partition)
The problem is, I am unable to make it larger. I right click, click on resize/move, but when I do, it just shows that I'm at my maximum size for that partition, I can only shrink it.so my question is, how in the world can I extend that partition into the unallocated space?I've tried formatting the unallocated space to ext3 to try and merge it, no success.I tried moving my ubuntu partition all the way to the right (end of the disk) so maybe I could extend it to the left, nothing

Oct 10, 2010Want to repartition/resize existing 1/2 full 60MB sda2 currently containing NTFS. The "Allocate drive space" does not seem to have a resize option (the 10.04 docs claim there was a resize option here). When I run 10.10 gparted in live mode gparted crashes for unknown reason before it even finishes scanning the disk. Am I missing something here? (Never tried to resize an ntfs part. with Ubuntu.) The laptop I am installing this on currently has XP that crashes a lot for unknown reasons.

Jan 7, 2011I finally managed to install lubuntu onto this old laptop, and I noticed it came with "Sylpheed mail client" integrated into lubuntu-desktop. I entered in my name, username, and password, and pop3.live.com for the incoming mail (pop3 server), and smtp.live.com for the outgoing mail (smtp server), but whenever I attempt to get mail for my windows live email account the connection fails.
How do I make it not-fail?
General :: Recovering Files From A Failed Ext4 Partition Resize?
May 6, 2011I didn't know a resize operation on a 750 GB disk was going to take 40+ hours, and I was biting my nails the whole time, until the power went out when "only" 8 hours where left.I can still mount the partition, and many of the files are still there, but some files show as '? ? ? ? ? filename.ext' with ls -l.If I try to go inside such a directory: Input/output error.

Ubuntu :: Partition Manager: Unable To Resize Partition To Use Free Space BEFORE Partitio?
May 29, 2011I have around 30gb of free space in my partition table immediately before the Linux partition. I want to resize my linux partition to take up this space.
I tried booting with live cd, sucessfully umounted the hard drive but found I could not resize the partition. On clicking the 'edit size' button, partition manager recognised the free space before the partition but when i reduced this, the 'ok' button was greyed out. (it was not greyed out for the windows partition so I could, in theory, increase the windows partition to take up the free space but this is not what i wanted to do).
I am pretty sure that I had managed to unmount the drive correctly as the padlock symbol had dissapeared (I took the attached screenshot, which does show the lock symbol, after rebooting into my normal system).
Anyone got any ideas as to why it wont allow this? There is no reason why i can resize the partition to take up the free space BEFORE it is there?

May 1, 2009Is it possible? I have a server that's colocated so a live cd isn't really an option. Everything I can find on resizing the partitions has said to use a live cd.

Nov 27, 2010I am running out of disk space, so I decided to resize Windows 7 on my first hard drive, so I could add another ext4 partition to put data on. However, gparted threw an error during the resize, and left with me a un-bootable Windows 7 partition. Windows 7 gets up to about where the login screen appears, but then BSODs and reboots. Unfortunately, the bsod is so fast, that I cannot see any details. Windows 7 recovery mode cannot fix the issue. When I try to repair the disk in gparted I get this error:
ERROR: Current NTFS volume size is bigger than the device size!
Corrupt partition table or incorrect device partitioning? I have attached my gparted_details log files, in a zipped folder.

General :: Recover A Disk After Failed Gparted Resize?
Aug 1, 2010I was trying to resize an external ntfs hard drive, so that I could make room at the front of the disk for a swap partition. At the end of the process gparted encountered an error. It couldn't see my disk again until I rebooted the system. Now, when it looks at the hard drive, it sees it as one big unpartitioned hard drive.
I'm pretty sure all the data is still there, uncorrupted. I just can't access it. How can I fix this?

...it reads that in the Ubuntu install menu I have to select "manually edit partition table", which I have found and selected, and then I should supposedly be able to edit the size of the desired partition. However, no option for changing the partition size appears. Instead I get a menu where I am asked to determine how I want to mount the partition (as ext4, ext3, etc.) and if I want to format it. However nowhere it mentions anything related to "change size" or similar.

I no longer want or need the windows partition. so I used system > administrator> disk utility to delete the windows partition. Now to hopefully prevent a problem. How do I enlarge the Ubuntu partition without causing problems?
Can I do it while I am ubuntu or do I need to do it from the live cd or what?

Within this Windows installation, it only shows 1% fragmentation.

Long story short, after reinstalling windows 7 and messing around a little with its partition and the other ntfs one (resizing etc); Gparted won't open the disk. It shows all the disk as unallocated space, And throws a message to the terminal which says something like "Can't have a partition out of the disk." Funny thing is that *almost* everything is working fine. Everything works except that ubuntu can't use the swap. (Dmesg says: "Swap area shorter than signature indicates") Also, testdisk, if i run a deep search for partitions, finds the last partition twice, but the second time the partition goes from 37129 0 1 to 40240 254 63 , while the disk ends at 38913 255 63. The problem is that I can't use Gparted now and I want to resize a partition.Also I believe that going without swap is not good for ubuntu.

Oct 15, 2010I am dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu on my laptop, and I'm trying to resize my ubuntu partition to make it larger. When I boot from the GParted Live disc , however, It only recognizes the existence of my 160 Gig windows NTFS partition which has ~15 Gigs of free space, which I want to reformat and expand ubuntu into (I freed that space by shrinking my windows partition from inside windows 7). I know my Ubuntu partitions are there (I'm in Ubuntu now, plus my HD is 200 Gigs not 160), but I can't see them.
I have a feeling this has something to do with my resizing of my windows partition from windows, but I'm not sure.

Jun 12, 2010I have a serious problem! I downloaded and burnt Ubuntu 10.04 and then chose it as start up volume in Snow Leopard's start up disk preference dialogue and although Ubuntu runs successfully from the cd (I'm typing from it now) I can no longer boot into OS X at all.
I have tried all of the different short cuts at boot up to no avail, even trying 2 keyboards. It insists on looking for the Ubuntu disk and if it is not in the drive comes up with an error message stating that a system disk cannot be found.
Is there any kind of tool on Ubuntu that will let me change the start up disc/interact with the Mac's efi settings? I previously had refit installed but this disappeared just before I booted the cd, is it worth using the live cd?
I tried booting from a Tiger dvd but it wouldn't let me do so, it just returned me to the ominous "System disk not found" message.
Does anyone have any kind of idea? Perhaps some kind of shell script that will reinstall refit? I'm guessing that any kind of dvd designed for PC will prob boot, any kind of OS X recovery disk compatible with MBR available?
Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Get HP Laptop To Boot From Live USB - Sort It?
Apr 25, 2011Fed up with Windows and ready to become a Linux convert. Here's the only problem:
I've created no less than four separate Live USB distros - all using different USB sticks -
yet my HP Pavilion dv7 refuses to recognize any of them as "bootable devices."
1) Have formatted USB sticks in FAT16 & FAT32 - neither made a difference.
2) Have created bootable USB sticks using Ubuntu Minimal Live install; Ubuntu full Live install; PuppyLinux Live install; even a simple gparted live install - none will boot.
3) Have checked & re-checked that BIOS is set to boot first from USB drive device.
4) 2 of the 4 USB sticks are new, fresh out of the packaging; and 3 of the 4 USB sticks are each from different manufacturers - so I'm fairly certain it's not a issue of a particular brand being incompatible, nor is it due to the sticks being corrupted somehow.
5) Each of the 4 live distros appears to have downloaded just fine - all necessary files appear to be in order.
6) Have tried using Unetbootin, Ubuntu's own live usb tool, and 1 or 2 others - all have failed to boot my HP laptop.
7) Have even tried removing all non-essential hardware before booting - even booting with no hard drives installed - system still returns the error "no bootable device detected."
This laptop is only 2 years old; I know it should be able to boot from USB. I can boot from a (rather old) SliTaz distro on CD just fine - but I need a persistent USB stick so I can easily add packages as needed, etc...s.

The one thing I took for granted is OSX's ability to resize a partition to create space for another partition. I am wondering if this is possible? The reason is I want to put all my storage data (i.e. papers, pictures, music, etc) into a partition separate from the OS. I seek to do this so that I can test out Lucid and subsequent alpha's/beta's.

May 23, 2010I just installed ubuntu on my laptop and I was recommended to create separate partitions for root, home and swap. I was told that 15GB would be enough for a root partition but I am actually running out of that space very quickly after installing a few programs.
I wanted to resize it so I loaded up my live cd with Gparted and It won't let me resize it by more than 1MB. I also have at least 30GB of unallocated space on my hard drive so I don't know why I can't use it.
