Ubuntu :: Remove A Package Without Removing Dependencies
Jun 20, 2010I need to remove libgl1-mesa-swx11, as after I installed it, it has slowed down all my graphics. However, in SPM, it says in order to remove it, I have to remove most of my system, it seems as though it's "dependencies" involve everything to do with graphics, which I was running fine and much better before. So, how do I remove this package without removing dependencies?

Mar 25, 2011I have had this problem repeatedly with aptitude recently. I run Debian Squeeze but in a somewhat unusual fashion - I create a custom live image using the builder on the Debian Live website and then run the live image in persistent mode off a flash drive. For all intents and purposes this has never behaved any differently from a standard Debian install and has given me a great deal of flexibility and power, for which I'm grateful.
However there's been one strange phenomenon that keeps occurring. After a certain point - not before - aptitude stops removing dependencies when I remove packages, though in the ncurses interface the option is shown as switched on (and my .aptitude/config file does not switch it off, nor does any other configuration file that I can find, though maybe I'm missing something). This occurs even in the case of dependencies which I know cannot be depended upon by any other package. e.g. the e17 package in unstable brings in libecore, libevas etc. which are depended on only by e17 as I have no other Enlightenment packages installed. But removing e17 removes only the e17 package and not the dependencies.
The other odd thing is that this does not occur at first. Aptitude works fine for a while on a clean system. At some point though it simply changes in behaviour.

May 9, 2010How do most experienced Fedora users remove packages with large number of dependencies?
I know that the question is as old as yum, but still I can't find solution. There is package-cleanup tool, which supposed to do the job with "--leaves" key, but it doesn't seem to work. Right now I have F12 installed. I installed rosegarden with `yum install rosegarden`. Then I removed it with `yum remove rosegarden`. If I understand right, `package-cleanup --leaves` must show all of 12 dependencies that was installed with rosegarden, but it shows none of them (although it shows few packages). Is this a bug? For years I used Ubuntu and Debian and I was completely satisfied with apt.

Ubuntu :: Remove Installed Dependencies?
May 18, 2010I searched for a hex editor in the USC, and chose to install a package called okteta. Only problem is...(I didn't realize until after it was too late to cancel)...it's a KDE package.Since it was probably one of the first (only?) KDE based app on this fresh Lucid installation, I believe about 115 (!) packages (see the list below) were installed in addition to the one I wanted. Grrrr.I then went into synaptic and removed okteta, but as I should have known, it did not remove any of the dependencies.I then looked at the dpkg logfile to see what had been installed. Oct 19, 2010He was having problems with python and python-devel complaining about conflicting versions or some such when he was updating with yum. I told him (yes, a little of this is my fault) to try removing and reinstalling python and/or python-devel. Little did I know... He ran "yum remove python" and it listed over 600 (!) dependent packages to remove as well. Without telling me THAT part he clicked "y" and then watched as yum removed python and all sorts of other stuff (including yum--how's that for irony?) .
I have to go deal with this situation tomorrow morning but he has so blown away this system I almost don't know where to start. Sure I could re-download the rpm of python and reinstall, it but then I'd still have to one-by-one reinstall all the other rpms that were blown away by the python removal with yum. I do take at least partial responsibility for this. But really? 600+ packages and he clicked "y"? Yeesh. Oh, it's a RHEL 5 machine.

Jan 8, 2009I thought KDE is better than Gnome, and installed kubuntu-desktop on my Ubuntu 8.10 to get KDE. But then I found out my computer can't run KDE without serious laag, and now I want Gnome back. I tried switching back to Gnome, but now this is totally messed up. It's half Gnome and half KDE, plenty of bugs, and I got tons of KDE apps that I don't need. So I just want to remove package "kubuntu-desktop" and all it's dependencies. Maybe there's a fast and easy way to do it? I may/will want to do this for some other packages too.

Jul 9, 2011I'm using slackware 13.37 and I must say that I really like this distro and the biggest problem is the lack of dependency handling. This is something that bites you right away because you have this nice clean simple operating system but unless you really know what's dependent on what you have to install piles of stuff with lots of programs with duplicate functions. A minimal install option would be nice and I can see from some of the threads that even those with a good deal of experience have had a hard time doing a minimal install. I tried about ten times using different guides but I always ended up with something broken so now I have the full install running fine but with tons of stuff that I don't want or need including most of kde. Anyway, I don't think that the slackware people are going to change their minds about dependency handling anytime this century.
Although for those who have said that it's a FEATURE, I'd point out that all distros have this feature, JUST DON'T USE THEIR PACKAGE MANAGER! So with all that said, I think it's a shame about the lack of dependency handling but I still like slackware well enough to use it even though I find the dependency thing quite annoying. I know that there are people here that have a lot more experience than I do and maybe there are some tools that could make this business easier. So how do you go about removing programs? Debian has deborphan and Arch has pacman -Rd. When you remove a program in slackware, how do you then get rid of all the unneeded dependencies?

Jan 27, 2010I can't find a Yum command to clean up no longer needed dependencies, you know similar to apt-get autoremove. Or does yum do this with the erase or remove command? btw: yum-clean-all just flushes out the cache right?

Feb 12, 2010I have no need for libwine-print, nor cups. I noticed this issue while trying to remove cups. It's a box with no printer and will never see one, so I see no need to have it. I know it's not using much space, but I don't want it if I don't need it. Is there a way to remove libwine-print without removing wine?

May 9, 2015I've installed Debian GNU/Linux, from a Testing NetInstall ISO, then after setting up the system, I've installed the KDE desktop.Well, I like to have a system with the applications I want, not the applications that the system wants for me, I mean, that's the point of GNU/Linux, isn't?
Thus I want to remove some applications from KDE, let's say KWrite. I know it's a good text editor, but Kate is way better, at least for me, and... I should have the authority to decide what applications I want on my system, I think you got the point.So I installed Kate, and when I try to remove KWrite, APT asks me to remove nothing but this applications: kde-baseapps kde-plasma-desktop.
I don't understand why do KDE forces me to get rid of the entire desktop... when I'm just trying to remove a single application, and a replacement it's already installed.

May 31, 2011I know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

Feb 27, 2011what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.
Fedora :: Removing Notifications And Safely Removing Drives?
Aug 25, 2010These should be my last pleas for help with regard to Fedora 13. I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. I have to yank out the usb cord, touching wood each time.

Nov 2, 2010I am currently trying to upgrade over 100 rpms on multiple Red Hat servers. Whenever I try to do a rpm -u /packages/*.rpm i recieve a failed dependencies error on the very first rpm. I know that I can go though each rpm one by one and trace each dependency but that will take forever. Is there a way to skip these errors? I know the -nodeps command for rpm but I dont want to screw something up but running all of these rpms on -nodeps
