Software :: Unsuccessful In Getting VLC To Play .avi Files
May 8, 2010
I have found extensive answers to installing VLC player online. I'm having a few problems and thought I'd ask here as I am in no way an expert in regards to Linux or Linpus (the OS currently installed on my son's Aspire 1 netbook).I have been unsuccessful in getting VLC to play .avi files. I created the .avi files on my iMac and am now using my son's netbook while I'm away.I thought I'd be able to view them using VLC, but I only get audio playback and a black screen.
I have enabled Xfce menu, updated everything, upgraded to Firefox 3, and tried various ways of installing codecs i.e DivX (had no idea how to install!).I found lots and lots of forum posts regarding VLC. I encountered problems when attempting to download and install livna-release-7.rpm, from the VLC website, via the terminal. Basically every URL or mirror I followed was a dead end which leaves me unable to fix the black screenWhen I try to download rpmfusion I get an error stating that Fedora 11 is needed for it to work. Can anyone offer a working link to 'livna-release-7.rpm', or alternatively, a way to play avi files on Linpus. Is there any chance you could point me in the right direction.
I need to play or preferably convert (i.e. to MP3) old SNG files, which contain voice records. From what I could find, it's basically a MIDI created by synthetiser. I think it was recorded by some ancient VLC player. I failed so far to play it on anything I could download.
I installed openoffice 3.2 but had insufficient diskspace at /opt. Thereafter I receive this message if I start the package/update manager. "A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:The package ooobasis3.2-math needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.'" Uninstall and reinstall (at a different location (/usr/opt) is not possible although there is enough space.
I've tried to resize my home partition using parted. Prior to it I had removed ext3 flags following some advices found on net. Resizing failed and I ended up with filesystem bigger than partition. Then I managed to enlarge the partition using fdisk but it didn't help. When I run fsck on it it prints:
Code: fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16.2 e2fsck 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)
I have Debian Jessie and I've been trying to install the Nvidia privative drivers. I've tried several ways to do it and all of them end in the same way. The last one I tried was installing bumblebee-nvidia and bumblebee with apt-get. The output was [URL] ....
With these two messages:
[URL] .... [URL] ....
Then I restarted and runned nvidia-xconfig
Code: Select allWARNING: Unable to locate/open X configuration file.
Package xorg-server was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `xorg-server.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable No package 'xorg-server' found New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'
Finally when I restarted I cannot enter to Gnome... When I run xstart from the terminal I get an error saying: "No screens found", the final part of the log is this one [URL] ....
This will make the third time I have tried to load Ubuntu and it has wiped out my Win OS twice and am not sure it hasn't done it again. I installed a 40gb hdd as a slave, have XP on the master. In the process of installing I picked the drive that corresponded to the slave. Didn't understand the the names or titles Ubuntu used but proceeded and the installation went fine although I never saw a place to load Grub on the master drive. After rebooting a couple of times saw the option to click Esc for boot menu but the only choices given were Ubuntu, ubuntu recovery and ubuntu kernel. Can find no mention of my W OS. Have tried to unplug the slave drive but can't boot then as get error message of Grub error.
When I installed the latest version of Open Office in Fedora 10 I was no longer able to play ASX Video Files. Removing open office does not fix the problem. Also reinstalling mplayer and the gecko media players doesn't fix the problem.
I am trying to get avi files to play; I've managed to get the sound, but no video I tried google-searching but seem to have broken something else - the "package manager".
I read the instructions [URL] however, on one of the instructions I get this:-
Code: [root@bgrlaptop badger_fruit]# yum -y install gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly xine-lib-extras-nonfree Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/mirrorlist?repo=free-fedora-11&arch=i386 error was
[Code]....
how I can recover this and get libdvdcss and support for AVI (oh and MPEG) files?
I need this pretty urgently, otherwise I may have to convert individual files to some other format.I use totem player, it says "The following plugin is required : Windows media speech decoder" but not able to find it any configured software source. Therefore, it plays the file without sound.(attachment 1)I have vlc player, when I try to play wmv, it plays the files but again without sound. (attachment 2).Same with kplayer.
I am having some problems trying to play .wmv files in Fedora 12 KDE. I am attempting to use VLC player, but I get this error:Code:No suitable decoder module:VLC does not support the audio or video format "wmas". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.No suitable decoder module:VLC does not support the audio or video format "MSS2". nfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.I have tried other media plaers too such as totem, Kplayer, Dragon, etc, can not get any of them to work.
I am new to Fedora and I found this forum where I made an account. I have found in Fedora 13, I can not play MP3 files.
The next message I see: Movie Player requires an additional plugin to decode this file. The following plugin is required: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) decoder.
i just got the release candidate 11.3 and when i opened up amarok the music player, it told me that it could not play mp3 files. so i choose to install support for mp3 but it did not work. i added some repositories but still no luck.

Now I can play all my files with VLC. But now how to configure my keyboard shortcut keys like "play/pause", "stop", "nexttrack" for VLC. Only key working is "media",which shows VLC player when pressed. but other tabs do not work, why?
i have some old CDs which have videos with .dat extension on them i am unable to play these files on ubuntu (the movie player and vlc says that file format cannot be played). i searched for extensions but couldn't find any.
i have installed fedora 11 everything is working fine but i have problems with playing media files i cant play any kind of media even mp3s whenever i play a mp3 file it asks me to download the codec i press the search button but i get the following error could not find plugin in any configured software source
In my older computer, with Linux Fedora 10, with SMPlayer I can play wmv, avi, flv and mp4 files. In my new computer, with Fedora 13, I cannot play flv files well. They are played with shadows and colour lines.
I am running FC13 (Goddard) on my netbook, and it's impossible to play my mp3 files on all of the sound audio applications like totem and rhythm box because the system keeps complaining about plugins that I can't find on any repository.
I have a lot of wma files but when I try to play them I get the error "Your GStreamer installation is missing a plugin".So it looks like I have everything I need. Also, I can play wma files in Kplayer and VLC with no problem but Guayadeque has a much better music library and seems to be a better player in general.
I'm running Fedora and Gnome on a laptop and I'd like to play an audio file. I installed xmms and the mp3 plugin via yum, and started xmms amd tried to play the file. The progress bar advances as if the file is playing, but there's no sound in my headphones. I do have gnome volume slider bar set to the highest value. I tried running alsamixer and the volume is set to the highest level (however +/- causes alsamixer to exit, and not change the volume level like the F1-Help page says). What can I do?I tried the Gnome filesystem browser and clicked on mp3 or wav file which brings up the totem music player. Again, the progress bar advances as if the file is being played, but no sound.
