I am trying to setup thttpd on my ubuntu 10.04 system. I run ubuntu in a vm and would like to be able to turn on and off a simple web server as I please. I have been having lots of trouble trying to find a guide on how to setup and run thttpd. I have looked at the author of thttpd's homepage as well as this guide, and yet I cannot get it to work. Basically I have it installed and don't know how to start or configure it so that it starts. Current code
Code: user@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install thttpd [sudo] password for user: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree

The last weeks i have searched the internet for a server appilication like LogmeIn. A tool that will allow remote access, even if you are behind a Firewall or proxy. Your screen will be send out to my server, that will send it on to me. There has gotto be some free or opensource server tool for this? If there is no server appilication, how much will it costs to create such a program?
Im creating a PHP application for my company. The application its going to be used by around 500 people in the network. I've always used Windows Server for my PHP applications, but I want to start using linux. I've heard its faster and more secure.
I want to knwo, what type of computer should I use? Is does linux work better on Intel Xeon or AMD? I need the application to work fast.
Am I going to have any problems with incompatibility if I get a Dell server?
I've used Ubuntu, just to check it out, but I've heard Centos is better for web servers, is that true?
I'm new to the world of networking. Actually, I'm trying to change my desktop which has enough horse power to run heavy applications in to a server such that I may access it as a source safe server remotely (over the internet). I carry my laptop along all the times and would like to continue my development work when I find free time. I tried to find some help on google but was confused on which to follow and where to begin from.
how to set up a fake ROOT dns that I would be using inside my virtual test environment with private address range. Basically, I want to create a ROOT server that will only contain information to two separate dns servers that are authoritative for its respective domains/zones.
I can't seem to find anything on the net about this subject. Basically, how is a ROOT server configured and how should the fake hint-file for authoritative dns-servers be configured?
I want basically domain.xx and domain.yy to be able "find eachother" by using response from ROOT server. I know I could set up forwarders to respective domain on each of the virtual DNS server instead, but I want to experiment a bit the way I stated above - with a "real" (fake) ROOT server, if it is possible!
I want to create a VPN server using my Linux box that is running Lenny. I've googled and googled and tryed and tryed, and I havent been able to find something that will help me get it going. The server that I am running at the moment does not have a desktop installed as I don't need one. I access it through SSH.
So scenario that I have got and I want to incorperate is this:
I have a ADSL2 router that I want to port forward to my VPN server, and my VPN server has 1 physical NIC and a logical that I have pre-configured (Sub interface) thats on a different network. so this is what the IP configuration is:
192.168.0.1 (Router/Gateway) 192.168.0.254 (Linux Box/Proposed VPN server/eth1) 192.168.1.254 (Linux Box/Proposed VPN server/eth1:1) 192.168.1.253 (Windows Server that I can remote access to through the VPN)
I've looked at a few daemons that are available online for Linux. But I just can't figure out how to set it up properly. Perhaps someone who knows the best practices and pracedures when it comes to VPN with Linux that can pass there wisdom to me so I can note this down and keep it for later on.
I am using NFS to mount large LUNs from my SAN.I have one already setup and configured. I am adding an additional partition from the same SAN but I am confused on the setup. I know the LUN is connecting to my NFS server correctly because I see it listed in my /proc/scsi/scsi as an additional LUN. What I don't see is the drive being displayed in fdisk -l. I did notice one thing though, when I disable the host mapping from the SAN, my disk information changes from /dev/sdb TO /dev/sdc (see changes below)
Without host mapping to SAN:
Disk /dev/sda: 13999.0 GB, 13999026470912 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1701951 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
I got an task assigned to me, i have to create new ssl key, csr & crt files using openssl. But the file name must be of this kind (*.aaa.xx.aa). When I tried the file name starting with * its not accepting the file name. But when I tried with the file name starting with . its getting generated.
I installed CentOS on a IBM server. The server has 4 HDD of 537 GB each. On one HDD, OS is installed and i am creating a partition of 500GB on other HDD. The partition is created but whenever i am going to format it by using: mke2fs -j /dev/sdd or mounting it by using:mount -a Then, it returns an error "/dev/sdd is already mounted or busy".
i have a production server running RHEL 4.0 with 2x146 GB on a RAID 1 with OS and another storage with 2x300 GB on a RAID 1 with the application, it's the database and application.
No LVM was installing and configured before, and now the second array with mirror of 300 GB is running out of disk.
1. i have 2 new hdd to build another mirror 2 x 300GB.
how can i create a LVM to star using the vgextend anytime i need it?
I am looking into creating a web caching server for myself using fedora 10. I believe I need to use squid for this but it seems to have a lot of features. Basically, all I want for now is to be able to cache web pages that I and my network users use the most, increasing access time and lowering the load on my internet connection. Can squid do this and can someone point in the right direction on an article on how to configure such a thing?
Recently at work, they decided to block a wonderful site I used to access all day long (Facebook) so I'd like to be able to setup a proxy server on my Ubuntu box in order to access it from here as they wisely block all the other sites that allow one to proxy. What is the best one to do, and what would I need to do in order to be able to access it from an external IP, to include unlocking what ports on my wireless router?
My storage needs are beginning to grow dramatically, and I was wondering how I could set up a raid. I'm currently planning on building a file server that is a RAID 5 server, so as to have some amount of redundancy.
I've got multiple questions regarding building this server.Do I need five drives to begin with, or can I just convert everything to RAID 5, once I hit 3 drives without losing all my data. Will I be able to add more drives to my RAID 5 setup without losing all the data already on the drives. Do all the drives need to have the same RPM? Regarding the hot-swappable drives thing. Does this mean that I can use slots like I would an external hard drive? Plus in a drive, and it recognizes it on my machine? Has anyone ever used FreeNAS to build a fileserver of this sort? Can you tell me how difficult you found FreeNAS to configure? I plan to move over to CoreNAS when it comes out. Will I need to reformat all my drives if I do? I plan to use a hardware RAID controller with this.
I need to make a alias and I am a little confussed how to do it. As some websites say it has to be in profile and other says it goes in bashrc.on the server I have these files bash_historybash_profilebashrccshrcdtprofileloginmysql_historynewsrcI been trying to do this and think may have problem now as when I log in I get error it says bash_profile syntax error unexpected token 'fi'
I have a sunfire server that I connect to my dell inspiron 6000 laptop for internet. The wireless router and cable modem are in another room of the house, and I can't move the stuff in the same room. The inspiron 6000 and sunfire have the same external IP address, but I want to run a game server off of it, how can I get that to work if they have the same address?
I am setting up an SVN server (svn+ssh) that will be used by students at the university where I work. I was considering in the beginning, one single repository and eventually creating directories for each project inside the repository. It seems to me now, that it is not very secure way of doing things. The directory on the server will be with rights 770 and this means that every student can come on the server and sweep out the whole repository.
Also mistakenly or not, every student can 'svn delete' the whole repository, which could be a nightmare to recover from. An issue might be to create groups and then assign users to groups and then create many repositories and each repository to be assigned with group. This means that I will have to manage tens or hundreds of repositories -- maybe not very common task. What is an optimal solution for this working environment.

I was wondering if I could create a bridge between two wireless interfaces. So that when there is a WAN that filters MAC's, 2 different computers which aren't in the WAN white list can connect to the WAN via me. Is that possible? And how?
I'm on a CentOS server and for the past hours I have been trying to unsuccessfully make a script that will start a binary and keep it running if anything goes wrong with it.
I have created a ftp user in centos 5,but it got all permissions to delete files in other location, view the entire directory and create any folder in every place. How to deny this permissions to the particular user. And please help me to give permissions only to a specified location given by the root.
I have a system that has the following partitions:
Now SDC is a new drive I added. I would like to pool that new drive with the raided drives to give myself more space on my existing system (and structure). Is this possible since my raid already has data on it?
while creating a new database iam facing the below problem

I have a problem creating my second socket in client file. the program was running well but when I try to add another socket to connect to the same server, I got a problem connecting to the first socket! it doesn't make sense. the original code was:
What is the recommended filesystem to use when creating a home server/nas?
I'd be sharing files using SAMBA, DLNA Server or some sort of streaming. I'll have two win7 laptops, 2 ubuntu desktops and ps3 accessing the files. Most of the time the server will just 75% read from 25% writing.
I would like to use an unused desktop running Ubuntu desktop edition as sort of a file server for my house. I don't need to do much other than use it as a networked drive. All of the computers in the house are running either Windows or linux (and a google tv if possible). What programs do I need to use it for this purpose? I've heard something about apache and samba. What else do I need?
