Software :: Photo Manager That Remembers Pix On External Drive?
Apr 17, 2010
I run Linux Mint and keep 38,000 photos on an external usb hard drive. Problem is, neither Picasa 3 or DigiKam will "remember" the photos if I unplug the drive. When I run Picasa/DigiKam again, it reindexes all 38,000 pics, which of course takes forever.
I originally had windows vista on my pc and then I installed ubuntu on a partition, then I decided that I wanted ubuntu to be installed on my external hard drive so that it can be run on any computer, so I installed linux on my external hard drive then I deleted the linux partitions on my internal hard drive, then to further complicate thing I decided that I wanted grub un-installed because it ran slow when reading off of a external hard drive and just use dell's normal boot selector so I inserted my vista cd and ran /fixmbr and /fixboot which deleted GRUB and returned the default booting into vista, now my problem is that when I try to run linux by using dell's boot devices options It won't run and says that 'there is no boot manager installed'. Is it possible to have ubuntu on a external hard drive so that it can be booted from any computer? if so, how can I do it?
On the best photo tools. I love GIMP for photo editing, but I'm looking for alternatives to the default viewer and manager (currently Shotwell) for downloading images off my camera and organizing them.
I'm learning how to use F-Spot photo manager. When I click on an image thumbnail in the main browse box, (to highlight it), and then I click the "Edit Image" button at the top, - it doesn't display the highlighted image in the edit box. It displays a default grey picture frame (place holder)
I am trying to change my default photo manager from F-Spot to Shotwell, but I cannot find a photo option in "Preferred Applications" The frustrating part is having F-Spot open every time I plug in my camera.
I hv ubuntu 9.04 on my netbook. It has preinstalled F-spot photo manager. But after I click on any of its options ,it closes automatically. eg,I clicked 'Import' to import photos and it close. Same with almost all such icons. Does anybody know why is this happening.
I'm using F11, KDE, and Dolphin (primarily) as the file viewer. Is there any quick and easy way to be viewing a giant folder of images in the file viewer and then just highlight a few that you want to resize to 800x600 (or whatever)? Currently I have to pull them into GIMP and then resize each one. Alternatively, I can pretty easily do a command line to resize the whole folder, but I don't really need every image resized. I'm mainly going through and thinking "oh, be fun to send this one to so and so" but I don't want to send them the eitire 18Megapixel image. A nice quick resize to 50Kb and 800x600 or something would be perfect but this just hasn't appeared for me yet.
I need to be able to open a photo manager and scan directly from within the program without opening a separate app. Is there one that does? I just installed Mint on my daughters laptop. Wow! I'm impressed. I tried a some Linux distros a few years ago and although I liked the idea, I just couldn't find one that impressed me. Things have changed since then! I tried 2 or 3 distros this past week and they all beat the pants off any version of Win... that I've used. I'm so impressed that I am now considering installing on my machine if I can find software replacements. If not, I may still do it and run Virtualbox when I need to. I need to start with the photo manager.
I have a bluetooth track-pad that has worked for me on a number of computers. It works on my office computer, but annoyingly ubuntu refuses to remember the device pin ("0000"). I have removed and re-created the device and it always skips the screen where it asks if I would like to save the pin. This means that I have to have a mouse to get past GDM (well, not really, I can use the arrows) before I can pair with it.
I have tried reinstalling bluez and libbluetooth3, but that didn't help.
IMDB gives me a "recently viewed" list of pages I viewed recently (and a few of them were months ago, since I don't go there too often) at the bottom of every page I view. My cookies are enabled for session-only, have adblock plus, my ip changes every day, how are they doing that? How can I prevent it? What other websites are using the same trick? At this page [URL] there's a link there that says "Clear entire history", but I want to disable them from being able to track me like that, if they can track me, so can others.
I have 350GB external Western Digital USB hard Drive. When I try to remove it from the system by executing Safely Remove Drive menu the fedora 15 system gets stuck. The processor starts giving a hum sound and it goes on even if it is left for half an hour in the stuck state. The Mouse is not working and everything is halted.
I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation
Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
i have installed fedora 14 with so many libraries ,development tools installed on my pc but i usually have to present some projects which can run on my system .........and can't be executed or compiled due to absence of libraries and tools there so, i there some way to so that i can use this current installation on my hard drive of my pc to some external media like external hard disk and plug and use that installation anywhere on any system..
I got a dell inspiron 1501 laptop with a 80Gb sata drive what is the best solution to add data storage space for someone that love to have multiples operating systems at hand Note: I use mostly linux so I won't need to change my laptop for many years maybe ...
I'm not sure what to do, but I just rescued photos and documents using ubuntu live cd, gddrescue and photorec. The data carving went fine and I was able to move all of my recovered jpg's into a recovery/jpg folder, as well as my word doc's into a recover/doc folder. I also have recovery/video and recovery/audio. Now here's my problem...
I used the right-click "safely remove drive" from the ubuntu interface and then unplugged my external drive. I then tried to view the recovered photos, etc on my windows 7 desktop, but when I plug in the external drive I get an error and a prompt to "format the drive" so that windows can use it.
I plugged the external drive back into my failed laptop and with the ubuntu live cd can see the drive, but none of the folders display. I can cd "change directories" to all of the folders using a terminal, but still can't see them outside of the terminal. That is, with the ubuntu interface. I'm just trying to finish up recoverying these photos, which I thought I had done.
I need to re-format an external drive. All the instructions I have found start with figuring out where the drive is mounted (sda, hda, etc.). However, as soon as my RH Linux machine sees the drive's format (ntfs) it decides it won't even mount it in the first place. Gives me an error message. Also, the drive doesn't show up at all via "df -k". how to convince RHL to be a little more accepting?
i have Ubuntu10.04 on a dell desktop and 9.10 on a dell mini10 net-book installed from flash drive both work flawlessly, And have been for month but now i finally buy a external drive case with its own power supply slip a working drive from the desktop into it plug it in and nothing it doesn't show up on the desktop or under computer on either the desktop or the net-book.
I have a USB flashdrive and when ever I plug it in it's named CORSAIR. This I like. Now I have some external hard disks that I use for back up. They are USB also, but they tend to get some random name that is mounted to /media like disk-1. How can I name a specific drive to something like "backup" and have it always be recognized that way even across different different Ubuntu boxes.
I am using LVM on an External eSata drive that I take home on a nightly basis and am trying to find out what process I need to follow for removing the drive correctly and adding it back the next day without having to reboot the SAN it is connected to.
After reading the LVM how to's I am not sure if I should unmount or de-activate the Volume Group.
I see the vgchange -an and vgchange -a y but I am new to Linux and am not sure if that will make it OK to turn off and disconnect the drive. and it seems like when I bring it back the next day it is given the next drive letter (it is sdf on a boot and sdg when I reconnect it).
it is a single partition of 900GB and has a single share on it to hold copies of backup data to carry offsite.
I have a laptop with only 30GB storage and I want to install Lubuntu in virtual box but Lubuntu needs 5GB of storage space which i dont have. Could i use an external 160GB hard drive to act as the hard drive for the virtual machine without affecting the files that are already on the external hard drive
In my laptop, the optical drive cannot burn dvds. If I get an external usb optical drive do I have to initialize it and how? Also do I have to install some particular packages?
I have a little ODROID C1+ ARM box with Debian Jesse installed on a SD card. I am trying to share an entire external USB NTFS drive to all clients (Windows 7, Android) on my network. I had this working until a few days ago when I reflashed an updated distro. Now I can't remember what black magic was involved. iptables is not installed and no firewall is active.I have installed Samba and Caja-share. I have edited the fstab
with the understanding that this would allow permissions to be assigned and saved for NTFS partitions. I then used chmod to assign everything on the drive to nobody:nogroup as I recalled this was necessary from when I last got it to work.SMB.config is currently set as
Code: Select allworkgroup = *edited* [Seagate 4TB] path = "/media/odroid/Seagate 4TB" writable = yes force user = nobody
with no other changes. The folder /media/odroid/Seagate 4TB has been created. I have right-clicked this folder and shared with Caja-share
Code: Select all[x] Share this folder Share name: Seagate 4TB [x] Allow others to create and delete files in this folder [x] Guest access (for people without a user account)
but so far all I get in Windows when I try to access the share is a prompt for credentials, which is what I want to avoid.
I've got a question: how can I format my Creative Zen Vision M and use it then as an external drive? I dont want to use it as an MP3 and as a hard drive, i want to remove everything from it and use its 30 gigs.I'd rather format it into fat32, but could also deal with ext3
I would like to format my new external hard drive (1.5TB) so it can be accessed on both Linux (Ubuntu) and OSX. Is that possible without using FAT system? If yes, what file system should I use?
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
I get this when I try to mount this drive. I was working just fine and then when I tried to mount again to pull some data off It gave me an error. It is an internal hard sata hard drive hook up via usb with a usb to sata converter. Is there some kind of disk check i can do to find errors. There is data on there I would like to keep
