Software :: Package Management Is Broken In Ubuntu Karmic?
Apr 19, 2010
I have been playing around with quickly, and installed the package for my application. The install failed. Worse, none of my package managers can install anything anymore - I get the error
Code:
E: The package swift needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it. This seems to be the same problem as here [URL] But I cannot fix it in the same way as there is no online package for me to reinstall. When I try to install the .deb I get a message that it is either corrupted or the permissions are wrong.

I JUST got back on my laptop now that I have my new A/C adapter, and guess what? The package management system is broken! Which sucks, because I have quite a bit of updates to install.
Here's the details provided by Synaptic when installing the new version of AWN:

I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?

Alright this is not a huge issue but a rather annoying one. I hook my laptop up to my lcd to watch movies all of the time. The problem is though I have selected and reselected many times for the screen to not power off after so many minutes of inactivity. But for some reason it doesnt work. If i set it to an 1 it still like every 5 minutes turns off my screen. Im running 9.10 on a toshiba satellite with an intel graphics card.

I need to install the following dependencies for synspam on Ubuntu 9.10 karmic server:
Code:
sudo aptitude install nfqueue-bindings-perl libsys-syslog-perl libappconfig-perl libnetpacket-perl libnetaddr-ip-perl
dpkg -i synspam_version_all.deb
Of these, only libnetpacket-perl is not packaged for Ubuntu 9.10 karmic.
Is this functionality present in another 9.10 package with a different name? 10.04 Lucid does have the package: [URL]

Session management with gnome-session-properties and GDM appears to be broken in CentOS 5.3 and 5.2. I can't comment on earlier versions.Activating "Automatically save changes to session" does work--for example, on the next login, the terminals that were open at the last logout are reopened.
But if "Automatically save changes to session" is not selected, according to help,"when you end your session the Logout Confirmation dialog displays a Save current setup option."This does not happen. No "Save current setup" is offered, regardless of whether or not "Ask on logout" is selected.
Also according to help, if one has added sessions with gnome-session-properties, then
when one logs in "on GDM, you choose a session. When you choose a session, you can
select which of the multiple sessions to use."This does not happen. No matter how many sessions one may have added with gnome-session-properties, none of them appears in the list of sessions that GDM presents.
So it appears that only a small fraction of session management functionality works in
CentOS 5.3 and 5.2.

After upgrading my 64bit 9.10 install to lucid, KDE went poof. I am presented with the login screen, and after supplying my credentials the screen goes black and all I am left with is a mouse pointer.
According to ps kded4 is dead (zombie). kdm.log also indicates a problem with ibus. I installed the "ibus" pkg, but didn't resolve it. Attached is an excerpt of my kdm.log, I can't really find useful information in syslog/dmesg/messages. The system is up-to-date and I've tried starting with a clean user account as well as removing the .kde directory.

Whenever i click on an icon in the Places pull down menu (except Computer, Network, Connect To Server and Search For Files) nothing happens except I get Ktorrent popping up and claiming it cant open the selected Drive or Folder because it is not a valid torrent file. Which is fair enough, 'cos its not a torrent. Its the entry for my Desktop in a pull down menu in my O/S, and it does this even when I haven't been near Ktorrent in the previous hundred clicks of the mouse, or if Ktorrent is not running. If i un-install Ktorrent, the error message changed, but the correct windows did not open when asked from the Places pull down, and the error returns when its re installed- well, tried it once, in a very basic fashion through the software center.
I think the problem has been caused by two containing folders of torrent data files that have become stuck as entrys in the Pllaces menu- cack handed off me folks, was playing with new mouse settings as I was playing with new mouse settings. Problem may also be something to do with the problems I have been having with Ktorrent- it refuses to accept torrent files unless through a magnet link, bringing up the same "parse error- not valid torrent file" error message as comes up from the Places menu, only of course citing the torrent i just tried, when I know for sure the file is valid and operational because Transmission has no problem with it.I really hope someone can help me fix this, as formatting and re-installing will be a real ball ache, as I'm a new user who's spent the last week learning and starting the customization process, and I was just getting to think about backing it all up.System is Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit, Pentium quad core, one 250Gb system drive and another larger drive called storage that appears under Media path both SATA2, no DVD drive as connector is in the post.

i havent really had a chance to ask this for a while, but im in a bit of a bind. im trying to do a release upgrade of 9.04 through to 10.10. I'm stuck at getting karmic to reboot because of a grub problem. I keep getting "error 15" file not found. Not one single forum post has helped for some reason which is strange. Release upgrades have always worked even though not recommended, but this one of all has been the worst of the lot and totally insane.
Im testing in a vmware before i do this for real on the production server, I am using a raid1 setup and boot partitions set to md0.
my fstab after the upgrade before i reboot looked like this
# / was on /dev/md1 during installation
UUID=######################## / reiserfs relatime 0 1
# /boot was on /dev/md0 during installation
[Code]....
I tried to first install grub2, i confirmed it installed and worked perfect, and therefore removed grub legacy.
Ran do-release-upgrade , it completely uninstalled grub2, and it also fails at building /initrd.img-2.6.31-22-server and adding into the grub menu therefore the upgrade fails with this error. I reinstalled grub2, the menu came up fine but trying to load a kernel gave me something like
alert ! /dev/disk/by-uid/############## does not exist.
What is the go with this ? Ive been trying to make this work off and on for 6 months

I'm looking to upgrade a few packages but noticed that the version available through Yum isn't necessarily the most up-to-date version as per the package website. One such example is Mysql:
[root@localhost ~]# yum info mysql-server
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up repositories
[code]....
If you look on the mysql website, the latest community edition is 5.1.50. I suspect the answer might be to do a distribution upgrade via media (i.e.: burn a CD) however was wondering if there's any ways around that?

I am new to Debian but a long term user of various other Linux distros, most commonly Ubuntu at home and Xubuntu for my old work computer. I tried Debian 6 LXDE the other day on the older PC, from a live LXF disc. It picked up all my hardware automatically and was so stable (more so than the Xubuntu LXDE distro on the HD) that I decided to install it.
Now that it is on the HD it is still very stable, but I am struggling with package management and installing "stuff".
I am fairly comfortable with the CLI and have managed to get myself into the sudoers group, install grub and add the old Xubuntu to grub manually (I was not impressed that Debian didn't pick up the other two distros on the machine, even after a grub install and update grub and all the other tricks I could think of).
Anyway, back to package mngt:
First, why is there no pdf viewer/reader by default? How do you start building if you can't read the many helpful articles in pdf?
But more annoying, when I try to install pdfedit, epdfview, evince, okular, pdf-viewer, osso-pdf-viewer or kpdf (at least one of which MUST work in Debian LXDE) using "apt-get install" or "aptitude install", as root or as sudo in the Terminal, why do I get "Couldn't find any package whose name or description matched" "Couldn't find package" or "Unable to locate package"? I can't even install synaptic to help!
Then I found that my sources.lst only listed the install CD as a repository (how stupid is that?) so added some repositories to it (eg deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free) and did a sudo apt-get update. And apt STILL can't find anything.
And what is that Debian Installer in the >Menu>System Tools? It asks for a password then nothing opens that I can detect. Is there a GUI for package mngt?

I've gone though the system purging/removing what I don't require on my Fedora install using the graphical tool in gnome 3. I then used package-cleanup --leaves to clean up some cruft left behind. yum list installed shows I still have 1031 packages installed, which is about 400 more than similar setups I used to have on Debian, and truthfully on Debian I have more stuff installed that I've still got to install here (gimp, nvidia drivers, etc).
I see a buch of stuff in yum list installed I don't need, so I can use yum remove foo to cleanup some more, but I'm wondering if there's another graphical interface or perhaps and advacned option in the add/remove software application I've been using thus far.

I might switch to OpenSUSE from Debian, but I have my doubts still about package management with OpenSUSE. I'm glad to see that zypper now has the --clean-deps option. Is there a YAST GUI for this as well? I don't like the command line very much. Additionally, is there any way to remove a package with all its config files? In Debian with the Synaptic front end, you can right click on package and click "remove" and it will just uninstall the package but leave its configuration files intact.
But if you select "Completely Remove" it will remove all the configuration files so that if you later install the package again it will use the default settings once again. Is there any way to do this with OpenSUSE? Again, I'd prefer a GUI. Does 11.3 offer Delta RPM updates, and are there many repos that offer delta RPMs? Does Zypper cache downloaded packages by default? And using the YAST package management GUI are packages caches by default? If so, where? Does the YAST GUI try to refresh the package cache all the time, or can I do it manually?

I finally convinced my wife to remove Windows from her Acer Aspire 5680 and instead to use OpenSuse, but unfortunately I am having some major trouble for no reason.
You see as soon as I installed the OS, I tried to add some new programs, like Thunderbird, etc but I keep getting an Accessing the Package Management failed error message. It says that it can't continue because process 9172 is blocking it. But I opened the System Monitor and can't find the **** 9172! My OpenSuse installation doesn't have this problem.
how to fix it? I can't install or update any software at all!

I'm having trouble understanding the principles behind OpenSuse package and repository management. Here is a concrete example: I want to install the 32bit version of glibc. (using zypper) Naturally I write 'wp glibc' to see what's available. Output:
[Code]....
I'm looking for the (32bit) tokyocabinet library. I go through all the hoops like I did in the first example. Nothing shows up! How is that possible? Does opensuse really not have this library in any repository? Does that mean I have to install from source? How can I be sure that zypper searches through all repositories?

Pretty much self explanatory:This morning I went into the update manager, and found a bunch of RPM package-management stuff such as rpm, alien, compiling tools, etc. What is up with this?I suspect they are setting the scenery for some big press release saying they now support RPM packages in Ubuntu too. Any ideas? (or better, inside info from someone who knows)

I've come from Fedora and am trying out Arch Linux. I was wondering if the packager 'pacman' contains funcionality like that provided by 'yum whatprovides': provides or whatprovides Is used to find out which package provides some feature or file. Just use a specific name or a file- glob-syntax wildcards to list the packages available or installed that provide that feature or file.

I know it exists for Jaunty, but not Karmic. My question is just simply, how can I download this package, and can I just use Synaptic to install it without any problems? Any detailed documentation about installing "obsolete" packages and their dependencies? Perhaps is there some way to get my system to emulate Jaunty, I can install the package, then go back to Karmic?

I've updated from 9.10 to 10.04 but unfortunately the PHP provided with 10.04 is not yet supported by zend optimizer. As far as I understand I need to somehow replace the PHP 5.3 package provided under 10.04 with an older PHP 5.2 package provided under 9.10. However I am not sure whether this is the right way to downgrade PHP and if yes, I don't know how to replace the 10.04 package with 9.10 package.
