Code:dd if=/dev/sda bs=1 count=2048 of=johnIs there a linux tool to search for a sequence of bytes within john? E.g., to look for 0x6a84b5fe78 ?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to find a way to replace a set of sequential numbers in a file with a different sequence using sed. This might be done easier using awk or some sort of bash script, but it seems to me there must be a way to do this easily with sed. Basically, what I am editing is a Cisco switch config. I want to change the sequence of ports to a different numbered sequence. Here is an example of what I am trying to do.I want to change for example, the file:
Code:
cat testfile
interface FastEthernet0/1

Is it possible to use grep to search for a sequence of bytes? For instance say I was looking for the following byte sequence in a file:
64 03 40 30 ; add eax, fs:[eax+30h]
Is this possible to do using grep?
I am trying to compare a list of patterns from one file and grep them against another file and print out only the unique patterns. Unfortunately these files are so large that they have yet to run to completion. Here's the command that I used:
Code: grep -L -f file_one.txt file_two.txt > output.output Here's some example data:
Code:
>FQ4HLCS01BMR4N
>FQ4HLCS01BZNV6
>FQ4HLCS01B40PB
>FQ4HLCS01BT43K
>FQ4HLCS01CB736
>FQ4HLCS01BU3UM
>FQ4HLCS01BBIFQ
how to increase efficiency or use another command?
I use this line to line to archive and password protect my files (with zero compression):7z a -p -t7z -mx0 ~/Documents.7z ~/Documents In the attached picture, I notice there is a check box to 'Encrypt the file list too' via the GUI 7z method. How could I add this option to the above 7z line?
Also I think rar allows you to 'Encrypt the file list too'. Could someone also give me a rar line similar to 7z a -p -t7z -mx0 ~/Documents.7z ~/Documents but that has the 'Encrypt the file list too' feature added?
I have generated a list of directories that I would like to use ls and grep on, but it is not working. I am using the commandCode:cat directories.dat | xargs lsand I get a whole lot of these errors:Code:ls: cannot access ./foo/bar/baz/grault/*: No such file or directorybut when I try the directories manually one at a time I find that they all exist and all have files in them. Same thing if I try to grep anything. What is going wrong?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a file with 5000 lines. it is a list of books authors, series and titles. all lines start with the author names, than there is a dash (-) than the series name, a dash again and the title of the book.
The problem I encounter is that sometime there is a series, sometime not, and as I try to enter this list in a database, I wanted to create a cvs file to import into mysql.
ex:
The best would be to be able to add in the second line, a "space dash space" just after the author name, but how to make sure it does not do it to the first line as well.
If I could separate all line with 2 dash, (grep ?) then I would be able to do a simple replace, and change the single dash into two.

For some strange reason the files are not sorted by file name (nor by any other sorting type) if I list them from the Windows command line (dir). I could always use the "dir /on" parameter, but I hope there's a way to make samba sort the files for me

About configuring my sources.list file.
The default file was:
To which I have added this: deb [url] stable all
Today I decided to include again Debian Volatile and discovered that it doesn't exist anymore and that I can get the same packages using this line: deb [url] squeeze-updates main
And the first question is: is this the same than debian-security?
Then, I decided to use [url] to make things less confused, and this was the output:
The first line is Ok. The second line, I guest it's the same than my second line. But, the third, is something different. So, the main question is: what is the difference between squeeze-proposed-updates and squeeze-updates? Are those repos completely separated from squeeze/updates (in security.debian.org)? And, what else should I add to have an always up-to-date and secure system?

Where in the filesystem is this information stored and what's the best way to get a list of installed apps from the files?
With file command we can get the file type. File returns a unique answer for each file type. I want to get the total list that file can return for linux & solaris. For example, I have a partial list of file's return output. Unfortunately I can't see the total list from manual page.

How do you save the GNU nano 2.0.7 sources.list file after you have edited it?
View 5 Replies View RelatedSome people love icons, but not me. I prefer the file list view. I have stumbled around Ubuntu 10.10 trying to find where to set this preference, but have had no success so far. In windows, you would set the preferred view and then apply to all folders. Ubuntu does not follow this paradigm, and indeed, why should it? I have searched the preferences in Ubuntu, and did a global search f this site for related topics. I know you have to be able to do this, I just don't know how. This is the type of topic I will probably kick myself for when someone shows me how easy it is to do. If you don't know how to do it though, it is still black magic.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI seem to have removed / moved / deleted my /etc/apt/source.list file and was wondering where or how can I locate them again on the web? Is there a place online that has the default repository listings for 'Etch' & 'Lenny'? I did not lose them on both but this is something I would like to know in case it ever happens to me. Seems like this would be something easily available on the web but I can't find it on Debian's site and or via Google.
