Software :: How Often Does Ntpd Sync Time With Its Servers

View 2 RepliesWhat configuration options in /etc/ntp.conf do I have to set to allow other computers to receive time from a ntpd server? I've tried removing "nopeers" and "noquery" from the restrict lines, but I can't see anything on port 123.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to sync my clock. I think I would like to do this by the "ntpd" daemon running. I think it should start up on boot, but it doesn't.
I have the following in my /var/log/syslog:
Jul 18 23:44:14 neo ntpd[1780]: ntpd 4.2.6p2@1.2194-o Sun Oct 17 13:45:13 UTC 2010 (1)
Jul 18 23:44:14 neo ntpd[1781]: proto: precision = 0.634 usec
Jul 18 23:44:14 neo ntpd[1781]: unable to bind to wildcard address 0.0.0.0 - another process may be running - EXITING
Jul 18 23:44:14 neo ntpdate[1194]: step time server 72.26.125.125 offset -0.505108 sec
Other posts say if ntpd and ntpdate run too close together, they cause one to think the other is locking a resource. It works to type "ntpdate pool.ntp.org" to manually update the clock. My Debian version is squeeze (6.0.2)
It works to start the ntpd daemon manually:
... sudo /etc/init.d/ntp start
... Starting NTP server: ntpd.
I am trying to synchronize the time of my VM server with ntpd. I have the following configuration. And in the /etc/ntp.conf, I have the following line:
restrict default ignore
restrict 127.0.0.1.
server time1.server
server time2.server
Whenever I have this line, the erver is not able to synchronize its time... So far as I understood, this line prevents other servers using this machine as a time server. And the second line says to allow localhost to use as time server. But why do I need to use its own time server when I have specified to use time1.server and time2.server ? ( firewall for tcp and udp ports 123 is open)
However, when I replace the first line of the configuration with the following line, it works. restrict default kod nomodify notrap noquery But with this, i am allowing other servers to use this server a ntp (which I wouldn't like to). Why this machine tries to use ntp server of its own (to snyc time) and why it is not working though i have the entry "restrict 127.0.0.1" ??
NTPD on Fedora 14.

I'm having a problem with the time on one of my servers jumping forward into the future. We run serveral CentOS 5.4 servers running Xen, some up to date and some a little older. The one in question is running 2.6.18-164.el5xen, with xen-libs-3.0.3-94.el5_4.2 and xen-3.0.3-94.el5_4.2. On this server are several Xen virtual machines, also running CentOS 5.4 with kernel 2.6.18-164.el5xen. One in particular has problems with the clock keeping proper time.
We use NTP (ntpd) to sync time to a central server in the company. Our NTP set-up works fine, and we have problems on only a couple of servers out of many. The problem I see is that one one particular Xen virtual machine, the clock will suddenly jump forward into the future, usually by several minutes but once by more than an hour. This has obvious implications for software running on the machine. Software such as Oracle grid control agent will restart itself under the (incorrect) assumption that it has been hung for several minutes with no activity. Oracle database will cope gracefully, but applications that refer to the clock will be confused.
We detect these time jumps because we have Nagios checking the clock on each host against the centralised time server (Nagios's check_ntp plugin). Nagios will suddenly report a clock offset that is miles into the future. Following the time jump, ntpd on the host in question will re-sync the time. Ntpd keeps the time steady, ticking just a few milliseconds per second until real time catches up with the server. i.e. Nagios will report the time as being 10 minutes ahead, then a minute later the host will be 9 minutes ahead, and then a further minute later the host will be 8 minutes ahead of real time. The clock on the host stays running very slow until it eventually is correct.

I have a set of machines on a disconnected network. Periodically, one of the machines connects to the internet and synchronizes its time with a time server that is not known until the connection is established. (The machine queries a central command server for the address of the time server it should synchronize to.)
I then use a custom tool to do some calculations to call adjtimex() and adjust the clock so that it runs fairly accurately.
I know ntpd is supposed to be able to handle disconnected networks but I thought you had to preconfigure the servers in the configuration file.
My intent is to run ntpd on this machine (without configured "server"s) so that it can serve time to the internal network. (Periodic synchronization using ntpdate from the internal machine to the bridge machine.)
The problem: ntpd wants to fuss with the values I set using adjtimex(). I want it to quit thinking it needs to adjust the clock and just serve time to the internal network. (Maybe I have a GPS time source hooked directly to the machine!)
I have one server running a daily cron to sync its time using ntpd:e.g.ntpd -qgI would like to sync my second server's system time to my first server. How can I do this?

I have 2 opensuse 11.1 servers and on both when you adjust the time in yast, I go back into yast and the setting for the NTP server is not set and "manual" is checked. I tried many times and the setting keeps reverting back. I always click on Save NTP configuration.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am currently using curlftps to mount a directory on a ftp server locally as /backup , I then use rsync to do an incremental backup to this directory every night and a full backup at the weekend.A requirement has arose for a similar set up but one that syncs in real time, so if a user puts a file in a directory it immediately copies that file to my ftp server, in this case it immediately copies it to /backup
View 4 Replies View RelatedI live in Egypt and we used to have Daylight Saving Time in this time of the year. But due to some political conditions, this decision was revoked and we are not using DST this year. The problem is that my Redhat 5.6 machines, configured to the timezone Africa/Cairo has already set the DST (UTC+3). The current time in Egypt is UTC+2. Of course I can manually set the time but the servers are set to sync automatically with an NTP time server so that time gets synced automatically whenever I try to change it. I want a way or another to disable DST switching.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a CentOS 5.3 server. All of the other computers I have are Windows or Ubuntu. The Ubuntu machines sync to the time on the CentOS machine correctly. The problem is, some of the windows 2000 Pro and Windows XP Pro machines are an hour off when they sync. The CentOS machine is set to New York time.
When I run: (Assume the time is currently 10:06 AM on the server) net time \xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx /set /yes
On the correct machines I get the message:
Current time at \xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is 11/1/2010 10:06 AM
The command completed successfully.
But on the other machines I get:
Current time at \xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is 11/1/2010 9:06 AM
Local time (GTM-04:00) at \xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is 11/1/2010 10:06 AM
The command completed successfully.
Then the time on the windows computer is 9:06 instead of 10:06.
Is there something that needs changed on the CentOS Machine for the times to be correct?
I am trying to sync the time on my Centos 5 box, but I do not want to sync the date. All of our servers need to have the clocks synced, but one system needs to have the date set to the previous day.

If I correct the time in Linux, it will be wrong when I boot in Windows. If I correct it in Windows, it will be wrong again next time I boot into Linux.Besides the obvious solution of removing Windows from my machine (which I'm not ready for), what should I do to fix this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI can't pinpoint when it started, but some time in the past several weeks, files have started going out of sync when I view them in VLC Media Player. Initially, sound and video are perfectly synchronized. After 10-20 minutes, it becomes obvious that the actors' mouths are not moving when I hear their lines.
If I stop playback, restart, and resume at the same point in the show, sync is again perfect for a while.
This is a really irritating problem. I cannot even get halfway through a half-hour TV show (really more like 22-26 minutes) without stopping & restarting.
As I stated, it's hard to point to a specific time when the problem started, but it could be connected to the upgrade to VLC 1.1.10.
Here's why I'm pretty sure this is not a problem with my files:
1) They are straight *.iso images of DVDs. No extra conversion/compression/processing so fewer opportunities for errors in the files.
2) The same files play back perfectly in Windows under all circumstances.
How did you fix it? Will we just have to wait for VLC 1.1.11, or is there a fairly easy way I can downgrade to version 1.1.9?
I have a few servers that are exposed to the internet. When someone tried to brute force hack in to the ssh, ossec adds their IP to the hosts.deny. Then the hacker (read: script kiddie) moves to the next IP up the line and hits my next server, etc, etc.
I end up getting 20 emails for all the servers that they hit.
My question, is there anyway to sync the hosts.deny file across multiple servers so that if they are locked out of one, they are locked out of all?
what the recommended way to set up real-time (or near real-time) folder synchronization among 2+ servers. I looked a rsync but that doesn't sound real-time and it looks like its something that you might put in a cron once an hour.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've recently switched back to Ubuntu and I eventually had to sync my new ipod. I've been getting this problem where every time I sync with either GTKpod or Rhythmbox my ipod music is acting weird. It shows new music that I've added but when i choose to play it skips to the next track that then skips to the next track, and so forth. Its as if my ipod is filled with songs that don't even last 0.0 seconds! But the songs completely play in Rhythmbox, so I don't think its a problem with the files themselves.

Is it typical to update everything when available or should I follow "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..." mentality?I would hate for everything to be working fine and then have an update throw me a curve.

But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:
Code:

I want to run a crontab to have that command run every minute. But it don't seem to run.

I have a laptop and a desktop PC, both running Ubuntu 10.04 and both are configured the same way. I am using Unison-gtk to sync the data between both computers... This works for everything... except for my mysql databases. Any way to simply sync my mysql databases on both computers. Right now I need to do this table-per-table... and it is quite long to proceed like this. What I need is a script or a program (open and preferably free) that would just compare both databases (all the tables) and sync them either by updating existing tables or by creating them. This should work both ways... obviously. I could write a script for this, but I am sure there already is something for this out there.

I'm having trouble keeping NTP synchronized and able to provide time updates to other devices on the private network. I believe this is because the server has a too large of offset, that causes all NTP clients syncing through the server to fail.

I have a folder on my workstation and I currently have an identical copy on my nas mounted via ifs (I'll be using this as my backup). The folder contains many virtual machines that are usually powered off. I like to think of the copy on my nas as a backup. The benefit of having two copies of my vms is that if I boot up too many on my workstation and the drive starts to cause a bottle neck I can simply boot the vms from the nas instead. (gigabit ethernet)
I would like changes I make to my local copy to be reflected on the nas.
I want this to happen In the background, I.e. If I turn off my machine it shouldnt cause a problem, the next time I boot up it just re checks the files and continues syncing the 2 directories.
What is the best tool for the job? Rsync?
I've never really used it before so a few pointers to get me going would be great, or obviously other recommendations if there are any.
I've got a file server with two RAID volumes. The one in question is 6 1TB SATA drives in a RAID6 configuration. I recently thought one drive was becoming faulty, so I removed it from the set. After running some stress tests, I determined my underlying problem hadn't cleared up. I added the disk back, which started the resync. Later on, the underlying problem caused another lock up. After a hard-reboot, the array will not start. I'm out of ideas on how to kick this over.
