Software :: Click On Email Link Not Switch Over To New Firefox Window

Jul 20, 2010

I am running KDE 3.5 Hardy Ubuntu and have encountered an odd window switch to new window view problem. When I click to open a web link in any Thunderbird email it will open Firefox but it stays on the current Thunderbird window. I have to manually click the FF on the task bar to switch and view it. Maybe it's a focus issue....not sure what focus really means. It also seems to do the same with other programs too.

Ubuntu :: Weird Keyboard In Firefox - Open New Tab When Ctrl+click A Link

Feb 4, 2010

I have this little problem with my keyboard. When in Firefox, I have to ctrl+click a link about three times before there is any reaction and a new tab is opened with that link. There is not much chance that there is some physical impediment in the keyboard because all of my other keyboard shortcuts involving ctrl work fine, and I have disassembled and cleaned the keyboard on my netbook (eeepc 1008ha).

Ubuntu :: Click On The File System Icon In The Launcher To Open A Nautilus Window The Window Opens, But Is Unresponsive?

Aug 8, 2011

My system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.

If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.

I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.

Fedora :: X Freezes - Can't Click And Switch To VT

Oct 7, 2010

sometimes (not often, like once a week) in my F13, X freezes: the pointer still moves but I can't click and I can't switch to VT. The only thing I can do is power down holding the power key! The system is not frozen (Once I've ssh into it), so I think I can avoid this drastic shutdown. I remember the option "DontZap" was used in Xorg.conf to permit the use of the CTRL+ALT+DEL to kill X, now is missing. Can I restore it, somehow? Otherwise can I have a way out from X? In my opinion the use of the power button is unacceptable

Fedora :: GUI Right Click Needed To Switch Between App And OS

Jul 13, 2011

I'm using F14 (preupgrade has an unhandled exception) x86_64 version with Gnome desktop, and I think after some updates I'm unable to go directly between app toolbar to os toolbar and vice versa. For example, I can start opera fine. Once it's started, I'm not able to change tabs or basically do anything in opera, but I can still access the window tabs on the bottom (OS or buttons on top). I need to right click somewhere on the OS, and then go into opera to use mouse there.

Once I do that, then I can't access the OS buttons, (switch windows/screen on bottom, volume controls on top, open new apps) until I right click somewhere in opera. It seems like there's a right focus button that is stuck somewhere. I'm not sure which recent upgrade caused it (if it was an upgrade), as it was working fine for a long time before. Keyboard shortcuts are ok though. It seems to be a gnome problem, as when I logged into KDE desktop it is ok.

Networking :: IP Layer Link Aggregation Without Switch Support

Sep 2, 2010

I'm looking for a way (kernel patches, configuration, etc) to bond multiple network interfaces together but for limited purposes. Here's the setup. Machines A, B, C, and D each have 4 NICs, each of which are on separate unmanaged switches. The connections are made in a corresponding way. e.g. eth0 of each machine are connected via switch 0, eth1 are connected via switch 1, etc. There are also other machines which have only one NIC and are connected to switch 0 only. All NICs for A/B/C/D and the switches are gigabit speed. The remaining machines have a low traffic level. Machines A/B/C/D need the extended bandwidth. And this bandwidth need usually involves only one connection at a time.

E.g. machine A transferring files to machine C with no other traffic going on. The speed need is to cut the transfer times from several hours to few hours (such as 8 hours to 2 hours). Transfers of up to a few terabytes at a time are involved. IEEE 802.1AX won't accomplish this. It requires special support from a single switch that all connection go to (raising costs and reducing reliability). Also, from technical details of 802.1AX, it appears that a decision process is made for which traffic goes over which physical link based on destination information. It's unclear what impact this will have, but it looks like at least a single TCP connection cannot use all physical links.

And possibly all traffic from host A to host B is limited to a physical link (not any better than a round robin of crossover cables). What I am looking for is something that works entirely on an end-to-end basis within a LAN. If it works at the link layer, that could be OK as long as it doesn't have the limitations of 802.1AX. Working at the IP layer would be OK, too (as I can already envision the logic of how to make that work). This might be an experimental patch to the Linux kernel if anyone has tried it. I have not dug into kernel source to see what might be in there, yet, but will eventually do that if there isn't a patch already available.

Debian :: Iceweasel / Click On An E-mail Link - Icedove Not Open

Feb 27, 2011

I use LXDE and in the "preferred applications" I set icedove and iceweasel as preferred mail and internet applications but when I click on an e-mail link(craigslist in my case) not only does Icedove not open, but in Iceweasel HUNDREDS of blank tabs open up rapidly and it is difficult to kill the program. This is unlike any problem I've ever encountered so I'm not going to pretend I have a clue here. As I am familiar with Thunderbird in an other distro I would prefer to stay with IceDove.

I installed Evolution email. Mostly it seems to work fine. But when I click on a URL link in an email I get the error message: Could not open link - no application is registered as handling this file"

Is there a fix for this? Also since I'm new to these forum is there a guide for how best to use them? Is there a way to mark posts as solved or unresolved, etc? For example I searched to see if this error message came up before in the forums and I didn't see anything. So maybe I didn't do it correctly? How do I edit a post after I've already submitted it?

Ubuntu Security :: 11.04 - Automated Email With Unclickable Link

Jul 12, 2011

I'm fully aware that Linux, and Mac OS X are a far reach from Windows when it comes to viruses. I run Xubuntu 11.04 on the netbook, and Mac OS X 10.4 on a Mac Mini. But, and I now wish I kept the email and didn't delete the account, but the following happened recently: I received an email, from myself (I was on my own contacts list) that was sent to a few others on my contacts list - an email I did not send out. There was no subject, and an unclickable link that - once copy/pasted and gone to, was "Forbidden," even when you took the /s away and went to the main site, it was "Forbidden." It was a .be website (Belgium). Being that one of the recipients was "noreply@craigslist.com" I can only assume that this email was automated.

It was only sent to a few addresses, all of which were tied to my account. I changed the password, deleted my contacts, and deleted the address (and have a new one elsewhere). I ran ClamAV on here, an antivirus on my Mac Mini (and I'm running a different one now), and thus far, absolutely nothing. So my question is - Is it, then, even reasonably possible that either of my computers are infected, and if not, how did this occur? I'm just taken aback a little, considering I don't use or have Windows on any machine that I own, and extremely rarely use Windows when elsewhere (and not at all recently).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Switch Pulseaudio Inputs And Outputs With One Click?

Sep 10, 2010

With pulseaudio handling sound on Lucid (10.04), when I plug in my USB headset it's recognized, but there was no easy way to have it be used without going to System > Preferences > Sound > Input & Output and checking the radio buttons. Then if it's unplugged, and plugged in again later, the setting has been lost, so it was back through the menus. Not good when the headset's not plugged in and I'm fumbling to answer a Skype call. What would be ideal is if pulseaudio could prioritize and always default to the headset when it's plugged in. But I'm told by one of the pulseaudio gods (Col) that it can't yet.Here's a way to at least get the switch down to one button on the panel bar.0. Get all your devices plugged in1. Find your outputs (speakers, headphones):Quote:pacmd list-sinks | grep alsa_output2. Find your inputs (such as a microphone):Quote:pacmd list-sources | grep alsa_input3. Write a bash file to choose one or both, like this but with device names appropriate to your system which you've discovered above for the alsa_output.* and alsa_input.* strings.Quote:

#! /bin/bash
pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.usb-Generic_FREETALK_Everyman_0000000001-00-Everyman.analog-stereo

General :: When Switch Buttons In Synaptics Touchpad - Tapping Gives A Right-click Menu

Jan 23, 2010

I work on a laptop and typically have a USB mouse plugged in. Each time I start an X session, I switch my mouse buttons with an: Quote:

xmodmap -e "pointer = 3 2 1"

If I decide to unplug the mouse and work with the touchpad, I must always reverse the options again to pointer = 1 2 3, or else, while the right and the left button still work as a left-handed mouse, tapping, instead of acting like a left-click, gives a right-click menu. My touchpad is listed as:

'ImPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad'
using the evdev driver.

I admit that I haven't played much with alternate xmodmap configurations, but I'd like to sort this out. It's even more confusing since I don't have a xorg.conf and, if I manually add one, despite having tried repeatedly, I can't make X-server to read it.

The relevant part of lshal output: Quote:

udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/platform_i8042_i8042_AUX3_port_logicaldev_input'
info.capabilities = {'input', 'input.mouse'} (string list)

Fedora :: Switch Window Manager In F15?

Jun 19, 2011

My laptop is now running F15 and I'm so far satisfied execpt for one thing. As I expected, a problem with Mutter (Gnome 3 window manager) is 3D performance. Compositing window managers cause a serious hit in OpenGL applications. So: No playing 3D games.

On my desktop computer I use Compiz-icon's menu to quickly switch between Compiz and Metacity. I use Metacity during playing OpenGL games.

How could I do something similar in Gnome 3 without using the fallback mode all the time? Using scripts to start a separate X session for games might be a usable hack, but doesn't sound very appealing. I'm going to eventually upgrade my desktop's F14, but I think I'll wait at least until G3 gains a few more features.

Ubuntu :: Click On Delete At The Bottom Of The Fslint Window Nothing Happens

Feb 12, 2010

I was looking for a duplicate file-finder that will allow me to delete the duplicate files directly from the program. After seeing several recommendations in this forum I installed Fslint from the repositories. It easily found the duplicate files that I needed to remove. The problem is, if I select a duplicate file and if I click on Delete at the bottom of the Fslint window, nothing happens. The duplicate files that I selected are not deleted.

I thought there might be something wrong with the repository version, so I downloaded the latest version of Fslint (v. 2.40-1), and I have the exact same problem. Fslint will not delete any files. Maybe Fslint is being interfered with by some other program. I am using Ubuntu 9.04.
